No problem, thanks for watching. Anything else you need just ask.
The coverages are all check with me so our kids can make coverage calls based on formations. Instead of making a coverage call like 2 or 3 and then checking we just call base and then let the formation dictate the coverage.
Great stuff, really appreciate your videos!!! They are very helpful and you explain away that is very easy to understand.
That is a coverage beater so you need an adjustment. Playing man on 1 and 2 read on 2 and 3 helps. Man on 3 and 2 read on 1 and 2 helps also. Change your 3x1 coverages up so they don't know what you are in.
Yaa I play madden I love cover 4 every thing u say I do it
If it's solo and the will has no number 2 weak he will push strong and cut #4. Backside safety has 3 vertical.
I play the corner 7x1 outside the #1 in 2 read because he has #2 if he comes to the flats. If he is inside and he gets blocked by #1 and #2 runs bubble he is outleveraged. We went 9-1 last season and 2 read was the only zone concept we played to doubles.
Hope it helps, you can see how the 4x1 stuff really outs a bind on the coverage. I am ok with 3x1 and empty but that 4x1 set is an issue.
You can run palms coverage against 4x1
And if your ends start coming upfield too much to rush the passer, throw in a delayed handoff , not to mention the read option game
Thank you for your opinion, I appreciate it.
Don't let 2 cross your face don't get out leveraged by 3. Hang curl until something delivers you to flat. Hands on 2 isn't a priority for us in that coverage.
Brett,
I am doing a video on defending these things, are talking about how I defend them or how would i attack the slant and angle?
The slant / angle is not the problem for me as the teams I play have heavy tendencies. I do not however face many split coverage 4-2-5 teams most play cover 3 and pattern read or some man to man. So I guess, I am just curious to see what a quarters/ 2 shell team would do to adjust / game plan against what I like to run.
Thanks. You answered my question.
Is it becoming a new formation or just TB motioning outside?
I'd like to be prepared for both, new formation (3x2) and/or 2x2 Early motion to the boundary.
Are you talking about the mike vs. trips? And if so which version of coverage? Usually when talking about getting outleveraged by #3 you are talking about the down safety or will lb in palms coverage.
If we are playing mix or special coverage the mike has to relate to the #4 and we hip him on the defensive end to help perimeter runs. If it starts quads and the 4 is a threat vertical we will play stress coverage with the backside safety taking 4 vert but it leaves on man on the single which i hate. If you release 4 strong the will lb must push his drop strong as well to relate to the overload. i will do a video on quads or empty tomorrow for you.
They will not be in the fit, it's a 7 man box vs a one back set. They are only in the fit if 2 cracks the OLB and its perimeter runs
Cover 4 mable defense
We keep the end C gap until we decide to move him. He is essentially the force player if it's man to that side
Tarence, it's an awesome defense vs up tempo teams. Let's the kids play the picture they see
We usually declare the back as the read side if it's 10 personnel 2x2
In special since we are man on #3 we have to play true 2 read rules on #1 and #2. The safety will stay on top of #2 as long as he is working vertical. The mike lb can now help short wall #2.
coach, If you're meaning new #3 (RB) being manned, because of #1 being X'd out I completely follow. If not maybe I'm mistaking an error?
Coach,
I am trying to adapt pattern-reading coverage to 7 man flag football. 4 players on LOS including snapper. Snapper is an eligible receiver.
From what I have worked on and been able to figure out, these are the potential issues and challenges:
On any given play, by the end of the play, the offense could present up to 6 receivers.
The defense has 6 defenders to work with, because the defense needs to bring at least one rusher every play to make sure the QB gets pressured and doesn't sit back and wait until someone gets open.
Im thinking of usually bringing pressure from the QB's throwing shoulder side to force them to roll to their non-throwing shoulder side.
If the QB rolls outside, I need a contain defender there to keep them from scrambling for decent to large yardage gains, but if we play man coverage and they release all 6 potential receivers, who has contain...?
If we pattern read and they release all 6 potential receivers, who has contain?
Even if we run some type of robber coverage where the blocking back(s) and snapper are being read, what if they show pass block initially but then release after we have already engaged some type of coverage that has a defender dedicated to contain or a safety doubling #1 or #2?
The only way it seems to play defense here is to just run spot drop 3 deep/3 under, 2 deep/4 under, or some type of over-adjusted spot drop coverage that is strong where offense is most likely to hurt us and weak where offense is least likely to hurt us.
I think it's pretty much understood that 7 man flag football is not defensive scheme-friendly. It's structured in such a way that the defense is at a disadvantage as far as strategy and tactics are concerned and forces you to focus on getting your guys to outplay their guys...
Any advice would be appreciated!
Brett I did the video today using 1 of my 3x1 coverages and the adjustments i would have to make to defend 4 strong and quads. I also talked about why i could not live in those things if a team had a true quads package that was not a gimmick. Hope it helps.
Thanks so much coach great stuff, wish your team the best if you need anything from me just let me know.
Coach, I was talking about 3x1 sets which means the #3 is actually a receiver not the running back.
Can you talk about your preference in the alignment by your d lineman here? I assume you consider this an over front with the RB being that indicator. Do you like that especially better than an under front for any reason or depending on the team and what they do well? Seems like in robber and quarters having the b gap open to the Will or the Mike could make their job easier in covering 3 to flat. Also doesn’t that help with playing gap exchange. Just wondering your thoughts on that stuff. Thanks for the content.
Boss how u turn cover 4 to mable defense
To the single side with sky call it's an 8 man front, the WS is the force player. We should actually be good vs. counter if the end spills it.
Hey Coach Mac,
Love your 4-2-5 stuff and am installing your split field coverages as we speak.
We have run in to one glitch... 2x2 ball on hash with RB Motion to Trips into the boundary. We have our Read side set to the field. What would you recommend as our adjustment?
Thanks in advance.
Well, it turns out to be 3x2 into the boundary.
Master can u do wide9 defense
What exactly do you want? Wide 9 is more a technique than a defense
The best way to do this is to actually walk through the route combos with your corner,fs, and down safety. I like to use the mike LB as well and make it a 4 on 3 drill. We do some footwork drills in indy to help the corner transition from his shuffle to #2 out and force him to make the out call. We also do some drills with the FS to get him out of his backpedal and over #1 with an out call by corner. You also have to do some screen drills so your guys see how to fit quick screens
Coach, how do you declare vertical out of your Palms coverage?
I played Safety Position in the years 80's and 90's in Mexico City and These players are my favorite Safeties of all time:
Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Brian Dawkins, John Lynch, Darren Woodson, Charlie Waters, Cliff Harris, Bill Bates, Mel Renfro, Ricardo Ponce, Roy Williams, Randy Hughes, Gary Fencik, Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Darren Sharper, Willie Wood, Rodney Harrison, Steve Atwater, Leroy Butler, Rod Woodson, Joey Browner, Ken Houston, Robert Griffith, Tim McDonald, Eugene Robinson, Kenny Easley, Eric Berry, David Fulcher, Bob Sanders among others Safeties either Strong Safety or Free Safety which is my Favorite Position in NFL
If I want to play 2 read to the boundary is it possible to keep the Will in a 50 technique so I am not giving up a 6 man box ?
Yes as long as he cannot be out leveraged by the back
Hey coach, what's the adjustment if the back is on the other side. Will that still be the Willie's job or the safety other side. And if it is the safety does that destroy the 2 read on that side sir??
TB or sniffer?
Coach when playing BRONCO aka LB force to the away side do you tell the DE if his B gap is open he has to fill it? Natural gap exchange created and feels safer to me as far as run fits . TCU still has their WS force when playing BRONCO I think that is crazy to ask of a HS kid , thoughts?
what do you like to do against 4 receivers to a side or a back out of the back field to a trips side? I like to run 3x1 pistol and either tag the H with an angle/seam or run play action with the H- block and releasing. I also like to run empty and Motion the slot on the away side into the trips side I can run Jetsweep / power read / midline read/ zone read /Jet sweep with a G( guard will pull if uncovered-if covered can read or he stays and either center will pull if available or we just run straight jet) / any type of passing combo with play action out of this. I end up seeing a lot of odd fronts and slanting out of these. If you could tell me what your adjustments would be or even make a video for these concepts. Talking advanced concepts here :)
Coach, when you are in solo what happens when #3 runs a deep out breaking route like a corner. Do you count that as vertical and the opposite safety has him? That is lot of area to cover. ANother question is if team comes out with trips to one side and TE opposite would you stay in SOLO or have to check to special? Thanks coach.
Coach, what are your rules for your LS in 2 read? Apex #2 and T, don't let #2 cross your face, re-route vertical and re-route dig.. or do you just put him in the curl?
Cover 4 palm defense when u use it
This is hilarious to listen to football coaches talk about simplifying the game for high school kids and their white board is covered in ink. Terminology is ridiculously lengthy
Coach, in your "Special vs 3x1" ... What if the new #2 runs a slant/drag? Does the FS shuffle to him or does he now look to bracket the new #1, and why? Thanks
So Coach, when you're saying don't allow Mike to get out leveraged by #3 you referring to #3 getting wider on like a flare? And if that is what you are talking about how do he still play that seam route when he flares out? That's the only thing that I didn't quite grasp. Other than that this will greatly aid my boys play with a few of the teams we have that like to spread it out.
Coach, what kind of drills does your DB coach use to work 2 read against different route combos ?
Coach when you go solo in trips. 1 runs go, 2 runs a flat and 3 runs a corner the back side safety never gets there. What is your adjustment?
1) What is the Will backer taught if the back is strong to the trips side while playing Solo cov?
2) What is the LS responsibility in Solo cov?
check Base D every formation has rules
Good Stuff!
Coach if they have a TE do you bump the DE outside the TE with the 3 tech or the SS aligns 3x7 over the TE
We would still play base situations with a 7 Tech inside eye of the TE. SS would be 3x5 or ability based alignment.
@@CoachMac cool thanks Coach
You're really putting a lot of pressure on the weak side LB vs counter
Coach, how do defend when teams come out in 2x2 and motion one of their guys to the opposite side. Now you have a Trips looks do you make a quick Mix call?
hahah i Like it Coach read cover 2 which turns to man after 10
Coach, how do you defend 2 by 2 with jet motion to 3 x 1?
Does 3 get across to the other side?
@@CoachMac Motion man gets to QB on snap, either JET to or QB Counter or Option opposite motion. I am curious to how you play it as well when he gets to other side and is a threat to speed out. Really asking about Jet to QB. Might not be a bad idea to make a video showing both.
How do the Dbacks in a 2 read coverage play the run successfully ? if they are reading the #2 ?
+Chris Eason In that coverage they will be secondary force players, the primary force will be the down safety strong and the DE weak the way it is drawn up when he talks about 2 read (palms).
In trip if you x out the wide reciver and play 2 read with the second and third wr. How do play a flood concept with the 2 running a sail rout and 3 running out/flat. Does your LS play the flat and your FS play the sail?
That route is a coverage beater, best thing you can do is hang the LS in the curl window but the whole reason you play that coverage is to trigger the bubble.
why isn't the Mike isn't shifted over along with the wheel to the strong side ,?
We can move him based on backfield sets, but we were talking more about the leverage of 2 removed. We play with a MS that actually plays like the Mike
@@CoachMac Okay. I see. Thanks Coach Mac. That's my name also by the way. I had the number 1 defense throughout Northern California last season only allowing 20pts total all season. I was told that I couldn't teach a bunch of 10 year olds the 4-2-5 defense.... Hahahahaha! Not only did I do it but we dominated every team put in front of us. Some teams we didn't allow even s 1st down. True story
@@eastoaklandsartiebo-bo6718 Awesome
Bracketing a wr means sky coverage!
Not necessarily just means 2 players responsible for 1 player. Could be safety low corner high, corner out safety in etc...
Coach when you play quarters and man up your corner does he play with outside or inside leverage? Press? In theory he has safety help inside but ...
Usually based on splits but I always favor inside leverage
Coach Mac, what are your corners and safeties alignment in 2-Read? Are corners 5x1 outside leverage and safeties 8x1 outside leverage?
Corners 7x1 Outside, Safeties 10x1 Inside
Thanks Coach..
when you talk about palms as your terminology, is that playing 2 read to the away side?
Yes it is 2 Read
Any suggestions on how to defend wishbone from 4-2-5 defense
It's 2016, how does a team run the wishbone? This isn't 1979 I. Norman Oklahoma and I'm sure they don't have billy sims running the ball ..
Coach, how do you declare read/away in middle of the field v. 2x2?
From my experiences, the read side in 2x2 was always determined by the RB.
Coach, in Solo vs. a double postwheel by #3, could we have down safety run with wheel?
Down Safety is playing 2 Read so he has the wheel route of 3, "swing deep of 3" in TCU terminology
That makes sense! Coach bringing the great videos! I've learned a ton from you. Thanks!
How does motion change any of your calls/rules Coach Mac?
We try to use the FS as the motion adjuster and get into base coverages. We have rolled to 3 deep on motions before, depends on what our kids can handle.
Great!! Thanks!!!
Excellent Mac
They are going to RPO your mike in your Solo look. Good post 💪
Neal Renna that’s why you have to carry other checks. We play way more man free now than we have when that video was made. Good point
Got a bunch of that last year. Can gap exchange with the DE or slide the FS in the fit and leave the mike out. To the field you can lock the corner and play read over #2 and #3.
That has been our #1Trips check for the last 6 years, we call it Mix
Thanks
I don't see what would cause a coach to not call 10 yard hitches and 10 yard outs every play...your CB tries to jump it and boom double move Td. As a coach I take what the defense gives you. I'm pretty sure my QB could make the throw. Not to mention the route combos you could throw on the 2-2 side. And a mike LB covering my RB in the Flats? Thanks for the 5-7 yards a play. You simply can't cover the spread, just try to out score the other team.
+PetroFor3 You are commenting on routes and plays vs coverages you already know. Anyone can draw up concepts that are coverage beaters. Field side flats vs quarters teams, #3 vertical on the mike, post over dig the list goes on. Can your players execute the call and can you dial up the right beater every play. Pretty easy on a white board.
Not to mention, you're not "sitting" in the same coverage every play....a smart DC will change things up while still giving the same look and change up assignments to give the QB false reads. Not to mention the blitz reads and stunts that can be thrown in.
+Ron Lanham blitzing against the spread is compromised of the formations and the use of ten entire field...
