Camera is everywhere and every angle is filmed. Line judges are kinda useless.
But it’s a difference between close calls and blindness (or not knowing the rules/to be able to count) ...
Umpires are also totally useless too!

I think BWF must make new rules. Let there be challenge whenever the player and judge don't agree each other. Like the last one, it's will be too painful for Ginting. Clearly he didn't foul. And also these umpires need to be penalised for their bad judgement, even players got penalised due to misbehaviour.

Honestly in today’s world with improvements in technology why dont we have fully machine guided line calls for these international tournaments… why at all rely on humans who are prone to make errors.
what's strange was how Beijing was able to have its own empire to oversee the match.
Empire is supposed to be from a 3rd country (so there won't be any bias toward any individual/team in the match)

does the umpire even know how hard is to even score one point in badminton?.... umpires should be penalised heavily or even suspended so that they get very cautious atleast next time...

No.5 angers me the most. Japanese pair lost because of a bad umpire selection (from China) - even the commentator said it’s unfair bias.

Replays are only for challanges and they can only did it twice (if you got one wrong there will be no challenge remaining but if you got it right it won't). Umpire is an umpire but they're also a human like us, but they should get a punishment for their mistakes smh🤷♂️

Especially the service judges. They should have a replay for every decision made. To foul a service is so debatable.
They have to find new rules for serving, and also for receiving the service.

Number 5 is very ridiculous how can the umpire said no challenge
The worst one I've seen is Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook Vs Martin Lungaard Hansen and Jens Eriksen 2004 All England back then no challenges and you couldn't overrule the line call. It affected the outcome/ result of the match in favour of the Danish combination.
That matsuma ine was so pissing off i would hv slapped that ump. Credit to them for showing such class
How to solve that controversy? Just let officials supervisor check it, any cheating attempt will be stopped right away.
And also, extra 1 screen for video replay, just same like VAR (Video Assist Referee)

Dear Umpire, pls look at all this clips and be ashamed of yourself. To all referee, dont forget that being a referee is to make sure the game is fair for the patient. Everyone are there to watch a good and fair game; not there to watch you acting like a king and as if you are always right
If the line judge gets a basic salary then I can understand.
But I'm sure the referee makes a handsome amount - there should be definite penalty for such poor performance.
Referees don't make a lot of money, ofcourse a lot means something different around the world but they are not there for the financial gain i think.
line judges and referees don't make money. They are rich old people who has lots of time on their time to do stuffs like this (oh and with pretty large ego to go with them). Can't complain when they need side money for a nice meal or gas money.

Umpires are volunteers, but their flights, hotels, and meals are paid by the tournament. Line judges are local people, so only meals.

You mean under the net on the opponents court, that is allowed as long as he is not hindering the other player. Above the net there are other rules.

There must be a second umpire in badminton as in the third umpire in cricket, sitting along with the commentators for a better view

Most umpires in this sport are underqualified for what they do.
I know these umpires get years and years of education and training, before getting on this level. Despite of this there are indeed really bad umpires between them.

I understand that umpires are human too and do make some small mistakes but that bald head umpire was literally sleeping.
I want to know, is there any action that can be taken if the decision made by the referee is really wrong. ? Such as fines or any action that can make refree more sensitive and careful of their actions.?
In these situations, usually the one gets the point will 'net' the next serve or purposely drive the shuttle out to lose a point.
Now that they have the Hawk-Eye technology, I don't think you need to have too much concern about Umpire mistakes

Referees and umpires should be young. With aging eyes it's difficult for old people to judge

The umpire of the game between Lin Dan VS Jorgensen made lots of mistakes in one game. BWF should take his license as an umpire.
I don't know of any sanctions. What I do know is that an umpire gets a lot of evaluations. But in my opinion the assessors prefer often a good presentation above making good decisions. You can see that happen in this video. I know this because I have been umpire for a while, on a lower level than this.

With the advance technology and umpire seems to make genuine mistake, it's about time that the challenge should not be restricted to only a few. Let's every dispute be challenged if they are confident of it. Penalise them if the player got it wrong eg. two point awarded to the opponent.
And if the umpire was wrong, he/she should be punished also with a fine or a dimerization marks

So painful to watch. Sometimes I wonder if these umpires or line or service judges even play badminton. Badminton rules are archaic and needs to be changed. Umpire calls cannot be over ruled even if video playback shows an obvious error. Like challenges, video playback should be allowed like 2 a game.
Most umpires I knew were playing badminton on a really low level or were not playing at all. That can indeed be a problem, not always. In my childhood I often had an umpire at matches and he said the following to me:"I can't play badminton, I am really bad in that, but I like to umpire." And he has made mistakes in my matches, but most of the times he was not prejudiced to any player. He made faults on both sides. And if he had made a fault he admitted it after the game. Therefore the players respected him, I never heard players complaining about him.
This umpire has led one England Open Men's Singles final years ago and stopped about 10 years ago.
Unfortunately, not every umpire is like this. So I agree with you.

it took years to practice and this umpire just comes and sits there and like no no no no......
Few days before got the same out by the judge on tournament when it was 10 sm clear out. 2 times per game.
Hopefully contents like this with the voice of commentator in the back will make the umpire and line judges have a better morality in a match that sometimes mean everything for the players. Shame on unfair umpire!

Why is the umpire’s decision absolute? Is it not allowed to review the footage before making the final decision whenever a player challenge? The umpires are also human they can make mistakes they cannot see everything from every angle that is why there are cameras everywhere. It is not fair for the player who works hard by imposing one’s decision just because the umpire can. I think it is a form of bullying, don’t you think 🤔

If the shuttle is already landed you can even hit the net, that's the rule. From replay the shuttle is already touch the field so its not fault.
Even when the shuttle is in play you may invade the opponents court with your feet under the net as long as you do not hinder the other player.
This is a special video, but as a casual observer I would consider a badminton championship no more valid that a figure skating championship from Russian judges.

A good example of people being paid to do the job but having their eyes and minds away from the game, didn't see when they are suppose to see but stick to their 'assumed' decision, knowing that the umpire and line judges are final. The faces of these careless officials should be immediately viralled on the social medias and their licences should be suspended immediately. The ones in the Indian Open (Indian umpire and line judges) is the most obvious. Opponent players who knew that their shots are wide but called in by the line judge or the umpire should allow the point to their opponents as an act of fair play. Those who don't should be ashamed of themselves. If having a bad umpire and line judges calls is not bad enough it is made more shameful when the opponents takes the unworthy credit.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that all umpires and line judges in this short videos deserve to be shamed in front of the world. They've been heartless and cold to justice. Had this not been a sport, they really deserved a shot in the heads.

Should have included the 2 arrogant Danish Women's Doubles pair at the olympics who won Silver. Cheated and bulldozed their way through. Luckily the Japanese pair won gold.

@@badminton_rally That pair also got hit by the shuttle in the skirt in YAE 2018 final, 1st game, deciding point. The shuttle hit Zhangnan forehead in a match vs Kamura/Sonoda also (2018 or 2019 I think)
