To expand, I am a waves affiliate and moving to this subscription model is NOT beneficial to me as such. I was not paid to have an opinion or share it in this video. I think subscription is an ok model for new users, but think there is an opportunity to either grandfather existing perpetual licenses, or create an option for a la carte purchases of plugins. No solution will be perfect, and im sure waves will respond to the public based on feedback. What do you think about the new subscription model from waves? lmk

Waves is a bargain plug-in provider. I only use a few waves plug-in so paying for a whole suite of waves plugins makes no sense. Waves is the Walmart of plug-ins lol!!! I don’t think this is a good idea. But only time will tell.

As a Mercury + Studio Classics + Inspire Virtual Instruments Collection owner, I think it's a pretty bad corporates decision. It actually increases my expenses by more than 2x for two computers since with my current investment, I can run my plugins on two PCs/Macs with an updated WUP (which I have until 2024). With this new subscription plan, you can only run it on one system and would need two subscriptions. Also, you could get the WUP discounted through resellers for around $200/year and sometimes you could even get it for $100-120 when Waves had a WUP sale. This makes it 2x to 4x more expensive for my particular situation. Sounds pretty crazy to me.

I think they will after a month of bad press. Antares has perpetual licensing in addition to subscriptions. Plugin-Alliance as well has had several ways to pay for plugins. Waves will eventually accommodate its older customers. I think this is a play to swoop on some plugin noobs. Unfortunately, these days Waves aren’t the only game in town like the old days. They aren’t going to attract the noobs with their antiquated garbage like they used to. UVI, Ujam, Sonible, iZotope, UA, Arturia, Antares, Native Instruments, Klevgrand, plugin-alliance, Melda etc all offer a much better experience in my DAWs

I’ve never bought any waves plug-ins and I wasn’t planning to, but I’m very much against “software-as-a-service”/software subscription models, so this concerns me because it’s a barometer of how so many different places are moving toward these subscription models. I’m definitely the type to be picky about what plugins I buy, and I would much rather pay a flat rate for exactly what I want rather than continue to be beholden, even if I’m paying less at any given moment for the subscription.

You can always tell the creators who have a relationship with Waves😂 This benefits two types of customers:
    1) people who are constantly buying plugins and are slowly building up to buying every plug they see on youtube AND pay WUP annually.
    2) New studio owners starting from scratch that can't afford upfront cash for Mercury
Even that is debatable. I think what is deplorable is how this was handled. There is a certain irony that people who hated WUP are already missing it

The issue isn't subscription per se. The issue is that there is no option but subscription. A lot of other companies have a subscription model, but they also allow you to buy their software outright if you want to. With this by Waves, there isn't an option to buy the plugins that you need. That's what people are up in arms about. The lack of an option. I think waves will regret this and they will at some point give people the option of buying whatever plugin they want or at least go back to the perpetual license model as an option.

So if you already had a handful of the legacy plug-ins which were already bought & paid for, they're going to effectively make them obsolete being that they won't be retro compatible with with future plug-ins...in order to use this you'll need to upgrade this, that and the third.

Initially, it seemed like you intended to provide a neutral perspective on the topic and discuss different types of users, but the content eventually felt more like an advertisement. This may undermine the credibility of your discussion.

It's fine to create a subscription model but to remove any option to purchase individual licenses plus then you have to pay a subscription just to keep these perpetual licenses updated in new OS's is NOT customer focused or friendly. In addition to this they gave NO notice that the perpetual licenses and the WUP would end - you're the only person I've seen say this is fine.

I want to have the option to buy and upgrade the plugins at my discretion, not to be forced into a monthly subscription. The 14.99 / month is very expensive, especially if like me you may only want to purchase just one new plugin each year. With that, I will not be using Waves in the future for any new plugins, and will keep my existing ones until the upgrade plan I have runs out. This will also limit my ability to upgrade my OS for fear of making my Waves plugins incompatible which we have seen in the past. I sincerely hope that others like Arturia or NI don't follow this model.

Ya I don't think an issue is people not being able to deal with change. There are many companies that give the option of subscription or perpetual. It caters to more people. Honest question, would you be happy if you were renting your MacBook, monitor speakers, monitors , mouse, etc. Basically your entire setup, and the companies gave you no option to buy them outright, even if you got free upgrades to the latest items in that same line. You know that it completely kills hobbyists and can easily add to writer's block/kill creativity if you are thinking you have to create this very second as you are paying for it. Or if you have a bad month of creativity. This may sound extreme but You are kind of saying it's ok for how the music music industry used to screw over artists by only giving them items in the companies name etc so if they got dropped from the label or didn't create they had no assets. This is very similar and the bigger picture is not good. It preys on people that think that if they have access to other peoples presets , they will have a better chance of making it, and literally owning nothing. But not just nothing, something that they used to own before. Most of these Updates that waves push are common bug fixes that 99 percent of companies don't charge for. Not an overhaul of new features. And being a long time user of waves these feature updates were always strategically saved to times when a lot of there customers would have eto use the update plan to get them. It was almost never within same calendar year. That's bad enough, but paying more to get updates for what I already own but only if I stick to subscribing indefinitely is terrible. I spoke to their staff and they said even if I pay for a subscription just to update the plugins, it doesn't effect the perpetuals being updated so if I ever cancel that's it. To people that already own mercury, you are paying 25 month (they don't reward current owners at all which is also ridiculous) basically just for young gurus presets 😂😂😂 (an exaggeration, but ridiculous nonetheless). It's not just change it's being trapped by a company, it's a company being disloyal to long time investors in their products. Period. There's no argument for that.
I hope not upsetting waves with this take helps you with any endorsements you are interested in, in terms of branding. There are definitely a lot of variables and levels of stress with this and many people have different reasons for disliking their move to sub only.

Why is it you sound like you are getting a piece of a pie? Waves is just another subscription service that everyone, including small creators and small studio owners, will have to pay for every month. You have to bear in mind that not everyone is making money from their music and will be able to afford another subscription. Studio fees will have to increase, and the production costs will go up. Not everyone is making money off RUclips and will be able to pay for another subscription with passive income.

  • @leandrobastosmusic
    @leandrobastosmusic Год назад

The issue is not the subscription, but just how they played the whole thing, holding people hostage of their new subscription model by not giving any other options to all the customers that supported them all these years… without these customers there would be no Waves around to start with, and now all we get is the middle finger. Just a bad move, that can have the potential to destroy their brand

Nope!!! Sorry but I think you’re off on this one. The biggest problem I think you’re not addressing is that all your projects will now be compromised unless you keep paying the monthly subscription. What happens if you decide to stop paying? All the work you’ve done is now unplayable. Imagine if Apple or Cubase of every major plugin company decides to go this route? $25 multiply by 10 apps you use for all your production beginning to end. That’s $250 you might as well add to your water and utility bill every month because now you either pay it or lose it. Plus who really uses 500 waves plugins for their production. Sorry. No thanks. I’m Waving goodbye on this one.

This is bull tbh. Imagine renting a plugin and not owning it, imagine all the og customers having to BUY A SUBSCRIPTION to update plugins they ALREADY OWN. Waves is not the only plugin service that's in. Was thinking about buying from Waves, definitely not now, they're greedy. Almost worse than Unison with this dumb stuff. And people that use Mac computers with their OS stuff always updating??? Yea nah, dis was hella disrespectful on Waves side. And affordable is an OVERSTATEMENT. Especially as an upcoming teen producer who is learning mixing and mastering for vocals and mixes.

Its disrespectful that they have marketed their plugins as bargains for so long, with no fine print that there was no insurance policy on your plugins lasting forever. Which means every body has basically already only been renting them. Since now nobody can update their computer if they want to continue using their plugins. Absolute dog act and am looking forward to watching the fall out.

I agree with ya, honestly, it works for me in the short term because the $15 per month is about the price of one expensive plugin per year. If I stop finding the value in it I'll cancel and use one of the many other options out there. The shady side is pulling the licenses, updates, and one-time purchase options from loyal customers. I don't agree with that. It's a good reminder to not be too dependent on one thing. Hopefully, they course correct and maintain those long-term relationships better.

Thank you for your mastering video, its helped me understand the importance of harmonics and loudness while mixing and mastering. The production process is all new to me and honestly, I'm truly excited about Wave's subscription options. Let's face it, the music game is changing and with all due respect to those before me, we can't allow these issues to affect our inspiration to produce music. I'm gonna eliminate my pride and "Keep Makin' Beats!"

Having over 15 years of music making experience I have learned what I need and what I don't. Also, being around this long I have dinosaur computers with plugins that stopped updating and I had to find different ones.

Why are people mad about this? They don’t have to advertise new plugins anymore and can put that money into new plugins. I don’t like how they forced it upon people. But I like this overall as with my upgrade plan and buying new plugins I spent well above 250$ a year overall and now if I do this I get a lot more.
