Hey there, Scott here from Chernobyl Studios and wow, another video.
Today the CTO and co-founder of Waves came out and said they are bringing back perpetual licenses.
In this video I explain and ask a few questions as well as give a few thoughts and ideas of what this might mean going into the future with Waves plugins.

Nice to know that power is still held by us consumers and that we can scare a company into a better decision. Unfortunately waves will always have a sour taste in most of our mouths from now on, but I’m still happy with their new decision
What makes the WUP a joke is that they base the fee on the inflated never-charged MSRP of the plugins. If it were a reasonable fraction of the typical sale price, more users would be fine with it.
I didn't think about it this way but it seems true!
WUP is a joke as they have to code compatibility to continue selling their decades old plugins to new customers. They’re not doing us any favours. It’s a core part of their business they’re charging to existing customers instead of simply costing into the plugin

I've been saying Waves could've just made the subscriptions an option and no one would've cared; some people would've signed up and enjoyed it and others would buy them piece meal as they always have.
Waves customers: Go home Waves you're drunk.

The CTO did mention about doing something a little extra, so perhaps they have an idea to do something like make the perpetual license upgrades a fixed fee instead of per plug-in. I would actually upgrade a little more frequently if it was just $29.99 or something like that. That could potentially bring in a lot more revenue because you would actually have people upgrading more often rather than like I did, which was twice in 10 years. Obviously I'm just spitballing, but I think waves actually needs to do a little something for the customer now instead of just saying it's going back and leaving it at that. I still take it as a win though.
Why even pay for upgrades when everyone else upgrades for free.. don't let them take unnecessary money out of your pockets 👍🏾
@@thegodsrockstar I would say that most of the other companies out there are extremely small compared to waves. I personally never had a problem with paying for the upgrades when the time came to update and operating system. That's just me.
That was the strategy 😂😂 to made them look like they listen to the people. Waves’CTO presumably get back to perpetual (don your own research but that’s what I heard) Jajaj very old method from politics
I am amazed how waves thought they could pull a stunt like that in the age of social media and content creation, and get away with it

If they are “genuinely sorry” they should give all perpetual license holders free updates and 2nd licenses to every plugin they own for at least a year.
While it is great they changed their mind I'm still moving on from their plugins. I don't use many of them so it doesn't hurt my work flow as much as others.
Is it a win? Maybe. It seems like a marketing ploy in hindsight. Either way Waves will get more of our money lol.
I’m glad they are allowing for perpetual licensing. They should stop the upgrade program, charge more for new buyers and eat any losses.
Glenn at specter was pointing out that waves went to rentals instead of owning the product.

I'm glad that Waves perpetual licenses will be back. I wonder what the price will be though after the introduction of subscriptions.
it would be a good thing for them to quit the super sale price BS - do it just like their competition and give a real choice, as they should’ve done in the first place
they played themselves with the sale prices giving people the impression that their products are lower in quality than their competition rather than on par with (true in some cases, but certainly not all)
I no longer trust Waves as a consumer, and that’s my only takeaway from this fiasco
Depends I think we can all understand new or newish plugins being like $199 or something like that, but what if they charge the same for plugins like L1 or the old CLA compressors?👀
Then people will go to competitors, just as they said they will do because of that subscription fiasco. Waves is not the only company that makes limiters or LA- compressors emulation plugins.

I think we’ve all just fallen for a very shrewd and cynical marketing ploy. Create outrage by claiming to do something you actually don’t intend to do. Get countless thousands of dollars worth of free advertising and have the entire internet taking about your new subscription model, come out with a “mea culpa “, reintroduce and have people embrace the WUP that they’ve always complained about.
Wouldn’t put it passed them! But also their brand is pretty tarnished rn. Not all bad press can be considered good press.
The vast majority of posts on the forums today regarding Waves “sorry” statement are as negative as their “were going to screw you” statements. The vast number of users are stating that they no longer trust Waves and going to start moving to other plugins and that they will not be purchasing another WUP. So, I think their marketing ploy failed.

I don't think that making people to hate even saying "Waves" again, leave alone promoting it to their friends; or pushing a lot of their customers to research alternative replacements from their direct competitors is a good marketing ploy.
If it was, then their marketing department should be fired along with their executive one for ruining their name.
Just to be clear on my part talking about the T&Cs. I was not trying to mislead anyone, but wanted to warn people since it seemed to be the case. I also got a couple people reply to me saying waves support confirmed it was correct that you would lose your licenses. Cant confirm any of it but wanted people to be aware and check for themselves before subbing and potentially losing their licenses.
I was cautious, I felt the options paralysis, now I'm annoyed. not with you or with Adam, I wanted to wait and see what the fallout was going to be, and still is going to be. In the meantime...we rock on!

I also would like to add, that (in my opinion) there's absolutely nothing to think about Waves . They are not some garage devs, with zero experience, but one of the oldest plugin designers, who have actual stocks on the actual market. They pulled a disgusting trick out of nowhere and they seemingly eff'd a lot of people , because if you take a look on their own Facebook "apology" post, people went back to kicking butts on the company, like nothing happened, but remember, Waves (and very likely many people from different positions there) thought that going subscription only, - after they lied in people's face for years - IS A GOOD IDEA.

Just a shame people didn't stand up to Avid in the same way when we got shafted over Pro Tools. 😠

Yeah - no thanks - I’ll keep using the waves plugins I like and that are my go tos, but I’m out for new stuff. IK has some great stuff and others.

Truth is is subscription plans for a car is already a thing and it's the future for the "You will own nothing and be happy"

The thing about losing your licenses wasn't even that much of an issue. You could just sign up with a different email address. The lack of updates was horrible though. Glad they reversed course.
I’d pay more with ownership. They are worth the money.

Yeah, I think I'm done with Waves at this point. Any company that can be that greedy, I don't want to deal with. Plus, I've found so many better alternatives in the last two days. RIP Bozo. ✌️
