For the first time ever, Waves Plugins have decided to force a subscription model onto their user base with no option or grace period. We explore what this means for the vast user base that supports these popular plugins.

I think every music industry youtuber should make a "Best alternatives to Waves plugins" content soon.
Yes to that.
I was alway pro Fabfilter, Melda, iZotope... And a handful of other ones... Subscriptions plans are way off putting.
It's coming no doubt.
Or share the links to cracked Wave plugins.
Plugin Alliance is where many are going. There is not one person on the Waves forum that is happy with this greedy decision.
This crosses the line, and marks the end of me and Waves.
Waves has made one monumental error in judgement. The vast majority of their customers, many of which are long-term customers, will see this action as the worst type of slap in the face. Our studio is done with them because of their unscrupulous businesses practices…and I am willing to bet that most of their customers will also go elsewhere…the plugin industry is totally saturated with developers looking for customers.
They should just make this like an option to buying, not the only thing. Shame on you Waves.
I like to hear the alternatives to Wave plug ins.
@@operasinger2126 Check out Plugin Alliance. They have almost as many plugins. Choose between buying individual plugins or a subscription (or both which I have). Through the subscription you are allowed to use plugins on up to 3(!) computers (instead of only one through waves). If you own the plugins also then you are allowed to use them on up to 6(!) computers! After each subscription period of one year you are allowed to choose between 3-6 plugins depending on plan to keep “forever” as if you’ve bought them. Now THATS how it’s done 👌🏻
I hate subscription model based services
They are going after the people who can afford to throw money away every month....
I bought 42 plugins from Waves and I was sure that the perpetual license was...perpetual, but now....now I'm speechless! 🤬 What can I do with all those mixes I have in my archive when I will update my S.O? I wasted my money, my time and my trust in Waves. R.I.P. Waves plugins.
Wow. Messed up.
Thats not a new business model, thats extortion. And they decided to aggressively force it that way because 95% of their library is either old or shit compared to their competitors. Nobody would pay monthly if they have the option to pay and own the plugins that are actually good, the "buy or subscribe" model would not work financially well for waves. This is why they decided to act like pimps and enforce "pay per hour or piss off". Im not giving them a single cent anymore!
I am currently in the process of updating all my DAW templates to replace all the Waves plugins that I have been using for years and years. I have essentially every plugin they produce but, you know what? They are absolutely not irreplaceable by any means. There is such a great choice in plugins out there at the moment that dropping Waves is easier now than it has ever been. And to think, my current Update plan (scam?) is just up and I was about to pay out for another one!!! Saved me some money there Waves, thank you
No way I'm going to pay a subscription when I already own almost all Waves plugins. They have thrown me under the bus.😢
Totally agree. They've decided to implement a plan that ignores all their best customer's needs. I predict that Waves will pay a heavy price for this move.
I've no problem with a software manufacturer offering a subscription service as such, but when Slate went All-Access, they still maintained the perpetual licences for their pre-existing user base and I can still download installers today. Here, Waves have closed off the option to maintain those existing licences going forward and have potentially sacrificed the goodwill of their user base. You mentio UAD - interesting that they are going the opposite way and recently made their plugins available native with perpetual licences
That was literally insane to me that waves went all subscription the moment UAD did the opposite like what the hell are they thinking? 😅
The quality of UA’s plugins far exceed those of Waves as well. If Waves survives this decision I will be very surprised.
@@petesmith6434 Greed.
If you purchased some Waves plugins in the past you can still use them. However, you can't update them
@@beatbuildersstudio Well somewhat. You have two licenses when one has a paid support program (WUP). So you can use your paid-for plugins on two computers (like most plugin developers). Now, as soon as your support plan (WUP) expires you not only lose the ability to update your plugins but you lose your second license immediately. This is theft of property you paid-for as far as I am concerned…perhaps not legally, but constructively. So this is a company I will never trust again and will never do business with again…if they are willing to pull this on us now, what will be next if we continue to do business with them? So, I am done with them.
I have many Waves plugins, I only use a few but, not a one I can't live without. I am definitely not going to rent a license perpetually if I am never going to own that license.
This seems to be a "money grab" just like the WUP.
If and "when" my licenses expire or just quit working, I will be disappointed. Not so much about the loss of the money I invested. More about the faith I had in this company as being reputable.
I lost all faith in this company a few years back. Like I said, there is not a single Waves plugin I cannot live without.
Couldn’t say it better.
R Bass and MV2?
Plug ins are just tools. It still about the artist and songs that make it happen. Great plugs can only do so much for a poor song. Unfortunate they chose money over creating happy customers.
RIP Waves!
That's a shame. It's like buying a car, and then your bank calling you and saying oh yeah you're on a lease now and when you're finished paying for it's not yours. What a shame
The WAVES booth at NAMM ought to be interesting in a couple weeks.
I hope they catch hell.
There are times when a subscription model is a good option for people, but this move is just Dickish. To me, their “update service” was pretty borderline too. I’ll continue to use the Waves plugins that I already own, but if any of them fail, I’ll replace them with a competing product.
Like to hear people's new choices.
I always considered Waves as crocks. Thought they would take things under consideration. And they did.
Not for the better.
Hopefully they’ve got something better in their sleeve…
Just came back from the Waves forum. Not one happy user about this, 100's of negative comments lol
I think the biggest thing is everyone else is doing options. I can buy slate or uad spark stuff if I want to. I mean I buy the uad dsp stuff and I get the spark free. Plugin alliance even does a rent to own so you own them eventually.
You got it backwards. The Mercury users are getting screwed the hardest. But Waves gives us two months in exchange, a $50 value.
I routinely use 5 to 7 Waves plug-ins. I will miss doing business with them. I do not respond well to bullying.
I’m building a new pc and I’m expecting all the parts to be in by Friday. I’m glad they made this decision before my pc is built. Now I don’t have to worry about uninstalling these plugins.
As a producer with quite a few Waves plugins (and even more from their competition) I'll use the few of them I need until they stop working (OS update), while shopping around to replace them. In short - Waves are not going to bully me into at subscription.
5:26 It is a big deal, if you already own all the plugins from Waves that you want to use. Even if you own so many that your WUP is capped, it‘s still 10 bucks cheaper than the Ultimate subscription. And if you use the WUP only every other year it even gets cheaper than the Essential subscription. And I‘m not talking about the WUP on sale. Also with the WUP you can decide which plugins you want to keep up to date and save even more money.
So a subscription model is perhaps good for businesses which can deduct the expense from taxes and Users who don‘t own any or just a few Waves plugins. Of course, if you just use them a few times a year and unsubscribe and subscribe again and again on a monthly basis, you can also save money. But when you use them every day or week like I‘m using them to make recordings of my band rehearsals, than you can‘t just skip a few month. So for me a subscription would be a loss of money, because I already have all the plugins I want and with the WUP I could keep my plugins up to date for less money than any subscription plan.
Too many companies seem to forget or not appreciate that it’s very difficult to put a value on good will. Once that is damaged extensively across a customer base, regardless of the net purchase value and profit level each customer may bring, they set off something that is very difficult to redeem.
There are now so many good/decent plugin developers with competitive products that provide an alternative to Waves. In the end too, for serious use, how many plugins do you really need? Many customers don’t want and will never use a large percentage of their products. A lot of their stuff now is perhaps more on the gimmicky bells and whistles end of the spectrum anyway. There’s quite a choice of decent and very good LA-2A, 1176, Pultec (whatever) emulations out there and other very good products, a lot of which are available to buy and own individually that are as good or even better than the Waves stuff. Are they then shooting themselves through the foot (or perhaps ultimately even through their head)?
R.I.P. Waves
I think Waves don't understand that people don't buy their plugins because they're great, they buy them because they're cheap and usually perfectly fine. If people are going to pay that much per month, they want the very best plugins, not perfectly fine ones.
They're also now forcing us to update to V14. I'm running Waves V13 on Monterey. I just opened Waves Central and it updated to V14 on it's own.
I just renewed my WUP myself so I'm pissed.
"You'll own nothing and be happy."
Funny! 'Please stand by!" 🤣
Voice your concerns directly to Waves Audio : Gilad Keren, Nir Kozlovsky, Meir Shaashua, Yoad Nevo and others. Real people. Real decisions.
Make do with the little you have folks, learn how they work and make use of your daw own plugins.. it wasn't that long ago we plugged our guitars into pedals and straight into 4track recorders to make music.
I just cancelt their newsletter. Adios.
Thanks for this well informed and insightful overview. In the world of digital recording it seems that there is some fair minded practice out there - such as Plugin Alliance allowing users to keep their 10 favourites every year and FL Studio's free lifetime updates for the DAW and bundled plugins and permission to run on multiple devices. If you treat your customers well you build loyalty - I hope Waves can get on board with that way of doing business.
i'll take your advice and do something creative in the world....today, and hopefully everyday....thanx for the reminder.
So many people are pissed about this. I'm thinking someone at Waves is going to get fired over this, as they see a huge drop off in users. I've been using their products since the 1990's, and this move by them will inspire me to replace everything of theirs that I still use.
Subscriptions are why I never touched UAD or Slate plugins.
It sucks especially for live digital consoles that are integrated with waves already because you have no choice, but to go along with it.
Maybe Steve Albini was right. He was concerned about these business models in the digital domain 20 years ago.
Steve has a lot of respect from me for a bunch of reasons. One I really like is he likes to be credited as engineer, not producer, because producers get in the way of artists being creative. :)
It's ok I'm sure plenty of Pirates are ready to crack Waves plugins and share them online for free, like every other Software that becomes to expensive or a subscription, you will loose official support but your project's will open.
Waves has to give the consumer the ability to buy an on-sale plugin without a subscription, period.
The update plan was already an insolence, but this is criminal - Rest in Pieces WAVES.
Waves v 12 plugins work on Mac Ventura, just the same as 14 versions, the version numbers change but the code is the same. I think it is a fear tactic to make people upgrade, but the architecture is the same. Waves central would say that ver 12 will not work, but offers the option to continue the install, and it works. But now that may be different. I have therefore downloaded offline installers for 12 -13-14 for safety. My Waves tru verb v11 works on Ventura as well. The new system does not have the option to install 12 etc.
Happy to lose all my waves plugins and not bother with them. My DAW can do pretty much everything they can. Just peed off with the company for not allowing me to use the software I paid for. I invested so much money with them.
It says you can still use the ones you own but not a newer version.
@@brandenwilson4378 Which means when you update your operating system, your plugins become unusable.
So no, you can't keep using them
@@Yadeehoo just going by what they say on their webpage.
@@brandenwilson4378 Yeah it's misleading communication. I think on purpose tho
I decided at the start of the year to cancel all my subscriptions for audio software. There's enough good (often better, cheaper... sometimes free!) alternatives out there. I know a lot of people who are getting subscription fatigue. I feel the bubble may burst sooner rather than later.
Also won't be surprised if Waves have a trademark subscription SALE!
They conned us. They won't force me to subscribe. It will ditch their plugins. Waves, to you I wave goodbye.
The wup timing pre subscription capitalizes J in jib city…..how long does it take for an impact server to hit the ground from the 18th floor?
I subscribe to slate, and there are times i wish I’d just be able to buy a few of their items, like the infeq and the mix rack plugins i use for my vocal chain. I’ve had a difficult time finding a chain via waves or my logic native that compares with the energy i get from my slate chain. And, i use the infeq on every mix in the master bus prior to mastering…
Let’s just hope izotope doesn’t pull this nonsense for ozone…
One of the bigger issues is the AI that they are selling in this subscription. A slow demise to the creative exploration; has engineering just entered a new paradigm?
I see this change as a nightmare. So much money spent over the last fifteen years on a lot of plugins and a Proton server, and now I should subscribe just to be able to continue using those in the future. But I won't subscribe for sure. They went too far. Hope they will understand their mistake and move back.
Bye Waves. Hello Plugin Alliance!
As I "Wave" bye bye no Suckerscriptions for me
I get it they're trying to be competitive but MAKE IT AN OPTION!
Good thing I have some fab filter plugs 😭
love the fabfilter stuff, and I don't have to pay by the month
I am glad to hear this news. I have been wanting to divorce myself from Waves for many years, this makes that decision super easy. I don’t like subscription models and will never give in to being strong-armed into buying into one! Goodbye waves, I will genuinely miss about four of their plug-ins total. 😉
Bad move Waves. I'll be ridin' the RIP bandwagon.
Important Update: Perpetual Licenses and Updates Will Be Back Alongside Subscriptions
Mar 29, 2023
Following your feedback, we are bringing back the option to purchase and update perpetual Waves plugin and bundle licenses, side-by-side with the new Waves Creative Access subscriptions. We are working to make perpetual licenses available to you again as quickly as possible. We will post real-time updates here as soon as they are available.
Letter from Meir Shashoua, Waves CTO and Co-Founder - March 29, 2023:
Dear Waves community,
Over the past few days, many of you have expressed concerns about our decision to discontinue perpetual plugin licenses and our move to an exclusive plugin subscription model. I would like to start by apologizing for the frustration we have caused many of you, our loyal customers. We understand that our move was sudden and disruptive, and did not sufficiently take into consideration your needs, wishes, and preferences. We are genuinely sorry for the distress it has caused.
After respectfully listening to your concerns, I want to share with you that we are bringing back the perpetual plugin license model, side-by-side with the new subscriptions. You will again be able to get plugins as perpetual licenses, just as before.
In addition, those of you who already own perpetual licenses will once again be able to update your plugins and receive a second license via the Waves Update Plan-again, just as before. This option, too, will be available alongside and independently of the subscription program.
We are currently putting all our efforts into making perpetual licenses available to you again, as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you can keep-up-date on this webpage, where we will post real-time updates as they are available.
I would like you to know that we are committed to you, our users. We listened to your feedback, and we will continue to listen to you. Waves is a company filled with users and creators, just like you, and we are all as passionate about the products as you are. With this in mind, we will strive to find the way to make things right by you, and hopefully regain your trust.
Thank you for your feedback and continued support-I wish you all the best,
Meir Shashoua
CTO and Co-Founder
Waves Audio
They’ve lost my business, so many good alternatives.
The sticking point is that we are using the Waves plugins on three computers at the same time. But not all 220 but only 10, which are only in the most expensive version for $24,95. In order to receive updates we would now have to use the subscription model 3 times for a total of $74.85 per month. For something that we have already paid dearly for. Waves just dug her grave. We will gradually replace this plugins.
Sad, really sad news! After so many years and hundreds, if not thousands of dollars payed! I hoper the other decent audio companies keep doing their good and customer caring work! At least some of these alternatives give options.
Waves definitely lost my loyalty and respect. I am confident I can find alternative plugins thar are just as good if not better and don’t hijack me…
i count my lucky stars that i never ever invested in Waves hype plugins as everyone gets screwed by subscription. What a financial mess the greed of these companies. Soon everyone will realize all those plugins are superfluous to the factory plugins included in any daw manufacturer.
Rip waves 🌊
It's just bad I'm not spending nearly £300 a year for somthing I don't actually own 😂 RIP waves
SO NEVER update Waves Central and you're ok. Hopefully you purchased all the plugins you needed before this new update.. I'm glad I did.
What problem would updating it cause?
@@housebandthexenos2569 You can still use all your plugins but we cannot update to the (new version) So if you don't want to be forced into a subscription DO NOT try to update your plugins.
If you purchased Waves plugins previously, you continue to own them (at the latest version you had prior to the launch of Waves Creative Access).
But what about when you FINALLY have to get or just WANT a new computer?
I dont use Waves too much, so I could subscribe during a project, print all the Waves stuff, and unsub to keep it moving
... but this seems short-sighted for the daily user
@@keysthomas1966 I run my plugins on 2 different systems but I have to move my licenses. At the moment I’m not sure if that option is still feasible i’m gonna look into it. And the sub plans are ok if you don’t own many plugins. Most studio I know including mine already have the best plugins they offer so It’s not for everyone. We already spent hundreds/thousands in plugins.
What’s the monitor you’re using?
Its actually a 4k OLED TV
Cool! And it works smoothly?
@@conrow1157 Yeah, it works great. only 60hz refresh but Im not gaming professionally on it. Perfect for studio work.
@@Featherlightstudio thanks mate
I know some people buying back the goog old hardware like H3000, 2290, PCM, Apex, AMS, Tubetec, and all which was. And we have been selling past 10 years due to the digital age. I invest in Hardware again. No subscriptions to me. It's a constant demand for money. The want to make their clients a money cow !!
I can easily live without my half dozen of Waves plugins. As a longtimer user of UAD and other high quality stuff, I never wanted too much from Waves, preferring other plugins in most cases anyways. After that move now, you can bet I want nothing at all from Waves any more. I'm really glad I didn't buy into their offers too much. Goodbye Waves!
There are many more fish in the sea, goodbye waves.
Agreed. I liked that their plugins weren’t a sub :(
You know, if you got a PC, everything works as intended even if it's like 6++ years old. That's a Mac problem (writing this from a Mac).
Very bad surprise. They must offer the option to update to the latest version before switching the business model over night. I used waves 10+ years and wanted to update to the 2023 versions. They simply say its not possible. What a rubbish strategy. I will stop using waves and move to companies who offer to own plugins.
I'd care more if they made anything worth using.
Well...imho its a pretty bad business model. So for me! Im done with paying waves from today. There are other ways around this. All respect lost here. 👍
Terrible Waves's move... it's like I have to pay every month to use my hardware synths that I already bought for me... I hope Waves reconsider their actions....
I'm not a professional. I write and record my music in a home studio for my own pleasure, ergo I can't afford this. Not happy 😒
Waves shot themselves in the foot in a big way. There are plenty of alternatives to their plugins just as good and quite a few free. Software subscriptions suck, there is a place for subscriptions but software generally and plugins specifically are not the place.
Waves has just become a plug in refence guide... "get a plugin like this waves plugin"
what a lousy action of Waves! I own a lot of their plugins, I think I have them almost all but from now on I won't buy anything anymore from them. No way of transferring to a subscription model!.. Hopefully all users will follow this buyers strike and let's see what Waves has to say then!
We need to adapt is all. So our deadlines and projects will now have to be updated with new policies for clients and the way we work with clients have to also adapt to fit the new subscription based model. This includes the way we charge clients and timing is going to be a keypoint as well. It might even force the sales of hardware gear even more now too. Which means higher prices. Which means i'm getting my hands on an ssl fusion while its still 2k. anyways back to clients, imo their projects have to be done within 24hours they have to really bring in their A game and they have to be satisfied with how it sounds same day no revisions. or something has to be worked around this because like you mentioned we've got over 50 subscriptions it starts adding up. Now what could also help is charging clients a plugin fee to help pay for the plugins being used giving the client a choice of sticking is hardware gear or plugins. (it sounds dumb but idk just throwing out ideas). There is no going back everything is going to be subscription based pretty soon. From games, to gas, to food, to medical. everything. get ready. to choose whats important to survive vs entertain.
Shady practices especially seeing that they were running promos the last two weeks, buy two get one free. I'm glad I didn't but anything .
See, the blame is on all you producer who work for them to push their product first. Ya'll are being played like everybody else. They jumped on the bandwagon like others
"You will own nothing and be happy" ..... Klaus Schwab .... [and affiliates]
I wonder if are legalities that will force them to deal with all the people that already own their plugins? Like me. And you. And you. And you. And you...
🍩💨💩
What waves have done is PROMOTE piracy. Adobe did the same years ago!
Someone said, They’re gonna use cracked waves, “it’s not a threat, just being real” if their current plugins can’t be updated 😂
@@jcpuga Yup "You'll own NOTHING and be HAPPY"
They lost something alright.
Business.
A subscription is not the prescription.
If you want to buy a loaf of bread, you are obliged to buy 1 kg of beef, 1 kg of carrots, onions, garlic, and this for a month or a year..... A miserable trick! It's good that the sellers don't follow their example from stores!🤪🤪🤢🤢
Goodbye Waves
Waves is not worth the subscription
They don't have the best plug ins so I'm not concerned I just won't use them.....

Waves is dead to me!
Waves was relevant ten years ago, when there was only five or six quality FX makers.
However, they haven’t had a new idea in that time; and worse for them, there are many better, more innovative, way cheaper competitors available today.
