- Testing out the replacement for trioxane, the Military Fire Gel, so far very impressed. More testing is to be done before I trust it like I do trioxane but I like what I see. Heating up 2 cups of water from 65 deg. to boiling in aorund 15 minutes. With atotal burn time of over 20 minutes. good stuff

Military Fire Gel
NSN 9110-01-518-9201
Fuel, Gel, Diethylene Glycol
Fire Gel has been approved by the Defense Logistics Agency as the new, replacement for the old Trioxane Fuel Bars used by the United States Military for years. Fire Gel is the ideal fuel for cooking, for your survival stove, as a fire starter or to simply start a campfire. All this flexibility and it is still safe enough to go on an aircraft!
Fire Gel was originally designed to provide an efficient source of heat for the soldier in the field. Fire Gel is considered safe aboard aircraft, odorless, smokeless, economical, non toxic and yet friendly to our environment. With an indefinite shelf life, Fire Gel is the perfect survival or recreational use.
Fire Gel is a must for hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and cookouts. It works well in gel or solid fuel cookers to including Esbit Stoves and the U.S. Military Canteen Cup Stove.

Thanks for taking the time to do this and provide the info. Great vid!
Thank you. I have used trioxane for... a long time. I like that the gel doesn't leave a residue. I am pretty impressed with the esbits, too.
Thanks very much for the test, just the kind of real world info that helps!!
thanks for the video, it was really inclusive and thorough!
Very nice beast!! Thanks for sharing.
Good call on testing 2 cups, when I test boil times I also test with 2 cups. I find that it is a more realistic test.
Great job beast & thanks for burning up some of your firestarters to do the side by side comparisons. Those esbit tabs really hung there.
Vaseline cotton balls burn for over 10 minutes, plenty long enough to get a fire going. Fatwood is Excellent for a natural tinder that will light even when wet. Best part is both are MUCH cheaper...
Great review, thanks.
loved the vid...i have all the things you've tested...wondered the better...know now...thanks!!
Great vid!
Interesting.. and not to expensive either. Thanks for the link.
I still like the good ol camp fire but I'll get some gel before spring hits.
I don't have a canteen holder though... guess I'll have to think about getting one at some point.
cool stuff
Where did you get your mischmetal from? Who makes it? Great tests, thanks for the video.
@TheBeebopper not sure, still playing with it, will try it though
@painfull94 oh patience, we'll get there
@beast12101 damn that was fast haha. good to know that i was not the only one with the idea. if you could post these vids soon that would be awesome because i am planing on putting in a order at cc soon. great vid and thanks
@TheFreerunlife esbit is cheaper, but right now I having fun using the pyro gel
Very informative. Tks!
Good to know about the wet fire
отличный тест!
Like the fact that the jel ignites with a spark.
@Rhinoch8 isnt esbit rebranded hexamine? the hexamine I used to have was almost Identical to esbit for burn time, smelled a bit more, and left more blackness on the cup.
Thx for the video I was gonna buy wet fire but I guess I'll try the fire gel now :D
@1420truthseeker thanks, but Im not a novice. Misch metal rods dont quite work the same as normal ferrocium rods.
Was the WetFire in or out of the original package? I have a bunch of this stuff in different kits, looks like I need to replace it. I have heard that when you brake the package its only good for a day or two.
ive never used wetfire. thanks for the review. ill save my money for the firegel.
@TheBeebopper i will try it
@LooseLatitude not quite the same, this is a foil wrapper
@mchipman1 yes, original package
could you do a timed boil test with trioxanne thanks
I find with those wet fire tabs as they are they are pretty much useless, what might add to this problem is the fact that they are not vacuum packed as you get to higher ground they fill up like little pillows as the air inside the pack expands, and in that state they can pop without you even knowing it and if that happens you're carrying around something which will not work even if you put a lighter to it.
do you think esbit or this gel is better..
which stove is good for this gel?
Wetfire has an exoneration date(that's y I don't use it) was that an old one?
what makes this different from sterno gel other than the packaging?
@absoluegreen Hmm ok
This company called landmann makes wetfire type fire fire starters and its 24 for $5 so its a great deal..Nice test..
nice
my dad has some of those grees packaged ones
@HoldenMcRoyn 4000ft
stuff works great much hotter burn than anything out there and lasts a long time two sportmanguide sells the stuff on survival gear..
i gave up on using gel to cook,just use it to start fires now if i have it.it's either my atomic alchohol stove or wood fire for me.
how does it work as a fire starter for like a bob thats what i want to get some of this for. i was thinking if you smeared it all over some wood it would light up nice and good.
Get the Walmart Fire Gel for fire starting. Starts with a single spark and comes in a nice releasble tube that would be equal to about 40 packs of that military gel.
@ustfu huh, none just squeeze it out at have a pot stand
the jetboil would have boiled in under 3 min.
looks like you need to calibrate your digital thermometer
Barometric pressure, and water purity pay a large role in determining the exact boiling point of a liquid.
me too? hmmmm
Sterno's a lot cheaper, one can = at least a dozen gelpacks.
and it's probably the same stuff.. glycol and the other long chemical word. LOL
Wetfire Blows...don't use it. Quicktinder is 100 times better and a fraction of the price.
Hardly two thumbs up. Way too long until boil. A good can alcohol stove will kick that gel's ass.
