This is a review of my three piece Bundeswehr canteen cup. a good friend of mine just informed me the Bundeswehr is the main german army and that i pronounce it wrong. sorry.
The lower part is not meant to cook in, as it has a white rubber liner on top which cannot stand the heat of a fire. This lower part is merely a protective cover & thermal shield. It can be used to eat out of, of course. The upper part can be used to cook and/or boil water in. However, the German Army mess kit is something completely different: Larger, no canteen/bottle, three pieces to eat out of. ATB, Gereon
I have the same kit. I love it! I removed the part of strap that screws in. I put mine in a pack pocket, so no need for the strap to be screwed to kit. I also removed the rubber 'seal' in lid (as you cant safely sterilize it) and plan to replace it with an O ring soon. When I boiled mine out, the leather strap that held lid to canteen fell apart, but I plan to replace it in the semi-near future with a short length of light chain. I will soon be painting mine with some high temp paint as well.
I prefer a canteen with a larger opening because you can get something inside to clean it properly as does the BCB Crusader cook set. If our US canteens had the larger mouth they would be great.
The large cap and opening is to make it easier to stuff full of snow. Then set next to a heat source and melt the snow for water. With the cap off of course.
Awesome kit bro. I found one at a local antique dealer this week. I thought it looked german by the straps but wasn't positive. I been on the web all morning trying to find one and your video is the first I've found. It's the same kit but the leather strap on the one I got is dryrotted some. I think I can make a new one. Bundeswehr is the designation of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany. It encompasses all three branches of Army (Heer), Airforce (Luftwaffe) and Navy (Marine).
I have recently purchased one of these for 20 nzd, in used but immaculate condition. the straps can be modified to accommodate a wire handle system for use a bail on a billy set up. Mine came with a psl 82 allie canteen and the cup and main " bowl " are are psl 84. These were issued to the NVA or East German troops, my specimen coming from the later period with the dome in the bottom, as soldiers would complain when compacted in form, that the allie canteen would rattle too much, is a nice bit of kit for lightweight bushcraft.
I just bought one of these for under $7 online, and an really looking forward to checking it out and making something in it! I *may* get a holder for the canteen and use the empty space inside of the kit for a stove, fuel and other cooking gear~
Using it this way could be dangerous. Because actually, that system is not meant to be a mess kit. The lower part is just an isolator for the canteen. When I was in the Bundeswehr what we took with us into the field was only the canteen (in an extra bag), without the other stuff, and we had another 3 part "main" mess kit. (Close to the NVA one and probably also close to the Finnish kit) So I don't know if there is some isolating material in the lower part that could be destroyed or release anything toxic or whatnot if you heat it too much but I'm just saying it could be.
I have one of these and I think it is older circa early 60s. Bundeswehr was the West German Army and is the name of the current German army too. The older strap system seems better in some ways because it is detachable and it uses a tension buckle very similar to the buckles on the old ALICE packs. My canteen bottle looks like someone used it for slingshot target practice but still works great and does not leak. It is very thick and durable. My only complaint with mine beyond the cosmetics is the seal inside the lid is like pink pencil eraser rubber and can dry out and start to crack. Mine was dry and rock hard when I got it and it split down the middle. But after keeping water in it awhile it rehydrated and works fine but it did give the water a bit of a rubber eraser flavour for awhile.
Great review, tks. I have a near-identical example. My set is marked PSL 62 with a PSL 60 flask which would make it an early example. There are 4 main variations between the 2: The first concerns the strap, which has an entirely different catch, and only one button-hole on the leather part. The strap is also held in place by a rivet, and hence unremovable. Another difference concerns the stud on your example, which is affixed to the bottom segment. Mine is on the strap itself. The top segment also has a slip-through bridge for the strap to run through, rather than just a guide as in your set. As for the external finish, the hook and catch in my example are unpainted, and the body paint has a rough texture. The base has a plastic stud through the centre, making the bottom segment unsuitable for use over a naked flame. (Also due to the said piece having a rubber lining along the top - inner side). The top segment, which like most of the other components is made from Aluminium may be used on both a burner or an open fire, but care needs to be taken to keep the handle away from the flames, and caution is required since the whole thing becomes very hot even just by conduction! As for Bundeswehr, it is an amalgamation of 2 German words, Bundes means Federal and Wehr translates to defence. This is the postwar designation for the German Armed Forces, which up to 1945 were known as the Wehrmacht, (defence force). Both terms refer to the combined services within the German Military.
@batmanrules1014 hi, i got one of these today, its 60 years old and has been issued in a combat zone, what i wanted to say is that you don't need to take the strap of, there is a way to cook with it on, i am not sure how, but i can tell you can because the leather strap on mine has been slightly heat damaged and has a bit of soot on the underside, but is other wise fine, hope this helped
Today i got this in my local surplus store. Its amazing, for the screw im just using my mora to unscrew it. I did not expect that it has canteen, when i opened it up i saw it and i was like Hell yeah, im buying this. Ive spent 7eu on that
This is a great kit that I keep in my hunting back pack and also use on solo trips in the woods. I use a Trangia 25 -8 series cook set, if I am out with another person. I need to freshen my canteen kit up with some paint though. When I bought it off of Ebay it was in rough shape. any tips on painting it like you did with yours?
The Bundeswehr Mess Kit is usually to be used with an Esbit stove. The stove is considered a personal item of every soldier and is therefore already issued to him, which is why the Mess Kit and the stove can usually only be bought seperately... well..hope my mumbling makes sense...o.o sorry for the bad english.
I find it interesting how each countries infantry mess kit design is influenced by their culture and diet.My british army canteen had the cup on top of the water bottle I guess to be ready for a quick cup of tea.The US Army kit I now use fly fishing has the coupon the bottom the water bottler in the cup.
I have a set as well, picked it up for $10. It is a bit noisy as already stated, I wouldn't have been too keen on carrying one while I was ground pounding. They would be good if you were being supplied food, food in one, coffee in the other, but if you used it to cook with,you would be getting soot and crap all over you. Hard enough to stay clean when you are in the bush anyway.
swedish messkits dont only come with a alcohol burner to use as a complete stove, but both pots are also designed for cooking straight over open fire, the small pot with D-ring loops to put a long stick in to hold it over the fire and the big pot with a hook that enables you to hang it on a tripod above the fire, great solution for when you run out of alcohol, or if you want to save it for later use. Also, you got 2 pots in that kit.. so why would you want to boil the bottle in it?
Well done review and demo! A concern I would have is the need to take off the top pot to access the canteen for a drink, and having to have a screwdriver to remove the strap when cooking. Otherwise, a great kit!
ebays the best place to look for messkits, if you don't have an army surplus store nearby. In this case:"Bundeswehr Feldgeschirr" would be the right keywords.
I haven't got one of these but after watching this. could you use the tang on the cup as screwdriver to remove the screw on the pot. it looks like you could use it.
Do you find that having to mess with the screw/bracket to remove the belt makes it risky to render the kit useless if you lose it? I have been using the USGI canteen/cup kit and like not having to worry about small pieces to lose. Just wanted your thoughts on that. Thanks for sharing.

i really agree with your point of view in my opinion it is far superior to the normal canteen set and even though u have to take the top off to drink i would compare that to trying to pry a canteen and cup from the bottom of a lesser made american canteen pouch
I have the same canteen. I founded it in a charity shop.i was also unable to find information on this item just that it was German. so this is just my presumption that this is just a canteen not a mess kit so boiling water not food. I suspect that the bottom half of the canteen is insulated. I don't know if this is to keep water in the flask hot if it's been boiled at some point. Or maybe just to stop the water freezing or just keep it at a reasonable temperature
+William Bragg Its defanately just the canteen, although it can be used as another pot if you need it to. I believe the only reason for it being a full shell is to protect the metal canteen as they easily develop pinhole leaks. This is why they aren't used in most armys anymore
I have an older one and the canteen bottle is crazy thick and tough. Mine looks like someone used it for slingshot target practice and has several dents and it does not leak. I am also curious how you would spring a leak in a steel bottle that would not completely destroy a plastic one. But having a cover for it is useful. It reminds me a bit of a mini version of the VDV canteen/mess kit combo.
Red River Scout Most metal canteens of old weren't made of thick stuff which si why they would spring leaks easily. Your thick bottle is an exception rather than the rule. Plastic is used more these days because its lighter, and cheaper to produce.
Good to know. I only have experience with the West German, old Canadian, and soviet VDV canteens which are all very well made. Although the Canadian one is interesting in the sense that it is actually two pieces of metal welded together. I have been lucky with all of them except for a stupid user error with my VDV canteen. Leaving water in it in subzero temps nested in the pot caused the canteen to bulge and caused both pieces to bind up. Funny thing is just for kicks I filled it with water later and it still does not leak but it has a pot stuck around it now. Makes it look like a chinese one with a bail handle. :)
Not really true. Canteens of old held up just fine, and any leaks were usually around the caps. I've never seen an old metal canteen spring a leak because of thinness. Now and then a soldered seam will loosen up, but this happens to all soldered seams sooner or later, including modern ones. It's a two minute fix. Or a two minute prevention.
i have seen german soldiers on video or pictures with their canteen without the top part . i think they might be leaving it to not botter them too much .

No. In modern Germany there is only one Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) with Heer (Army), Luftwaffe (Airforce), Marine (Navy), Sanität (Medical Services), Streitkräftebasis (a combination of all other Theatre Suppport units), Cyber & IT. Is German army issued to Day. I got to on my Belt. I my service time i did not like it. Because is near by my Buttpack behind me. Need all way 's a "Kamerad " wen i like to trink form my Field Cup. But es never use it for cooking Water. For this we got our mess Kit! Greetings from Germany 🍺

It's perfectly safe to heat. You must have been in the Bundeswehr much later on.

that big pot is not for cooking in, it has a rubber piece around it on top that would burn and poison your food.

The rubberlid has a little cut. Take a blunt tool and lift it out. This cut is exactly for this....to clean the rubber and the lid!

you need to remove the rubber seal on the larger cup too if your ganna cook with it . wish it came in stainless .
We own exactly the same thing, only difference is our canteen is bare no paint or texture on it. Stamped with PSL 69

Wolverine why you need to take the pink disk out
To prevent moulds to grow underneath. It is just a precautonary hygienic measure. The rubber disk is easy to remove with a blunt knife. ATB, Gereon
