Esbit is all I use to cook with..I set up two of the little folding stoves so I can cook and keep hot water going...and sometimes when I'm alone at a picnic table, in the dark, I set up a fire and have my own little mini campfire!

I used two Esbits about 1/4 inch apart in the folding Esbit stove and 24 ounces water in a stainless pot. Water boiled "rolling" in about 4 minutes and the cubes lasted about 7 minutes. Two cubes make each other hotter and draw more air generating more heat. A windscreen should block the wind, but not air. Air flow is important for maximizing heat, like blowing on a camp fire.

Awesome video. Are used to set myself and I am very happy with it. I enhance the sad by using it inside of a wind screen enclosure made of a tin can that I got at michael’s which is a craft store like hobby lobby sort of.I also made a lid for the part I use and painted it black with Russ told him flame resistant black paint. I also customized this said so that the solid fuel tablet is a lot closer to the bottom of the pot. I always get a rolling boil with only one tablet. I attribute this to the combination of all those things I mentioned here. I don’t think you will ever get a rolling boil with only one tablet you’re saying to say it as is. Thank you so much for sharing this video. God bless you.

You can use 2 tabs simultaneously if you stand them on edge with a gap between them
You can also go to Home Depot and get their CHEAP firestarter cubes

Trioxane has about half the energy of hexamine per unit mass. The shape of the tri cube provides more surface area to burn so you are producing heat quicker. If the Esbit (white) or Bleuet (pink) tabs were shaped as trioxane they would have have very similar characteristics. You can do a lot of experimenting with the hex cubes and see how performances differ. Break a tab in half and burn both halves simultaneously with a bit of separation between halves. Likewise with fourths. Try burning a cube on its side and note the difference. Then try burning one on end.
A lot of the tarry gunk on your pot is unburned fuel. I have 17 tablet stoves of differing designs/
manufacturers and every one of them is under engineered for combustion. I use tablet stoves exclusively and have for 40+ years but I'm still looking for a better design.

I love esbit! Have been using it exclusively for the last year or so. Love the simplicity of the system. I can usually get the water warm enough to cook my dehydrated meals with about half a cube! Love your videos, makes me want to go camping all the time. After I while I think I am a bit addicted to the esbit smell haha. Have a good one!

Interesting test, very informative, thanks for posting!
I think 24 ounces of water is just too much for either Esbit or trioxane solid fuel. GI mil-spec Trioxane was designed to boil up about 8 ounces of water for coffee or to warm C-Rats or MRE's in the smaller GI canteen cup.
For 24 ounces or more of water, an iso-propane/butane gas stove or alcohol stove would be a better choice and would greatly reduce the heating time.

Good video. Something to think about with trioxane tablets. They were made for Soldiers to heat water to reconstitute dehydrated rations and make a hot drink or instant coffee or cocoa, not boil water. And they were made to accomplish this with a low light signature to keep one's head from exploding because it was lit by a little yellow flame in pitch darkness.
I've used both. Started with Esbit and hated the smell and residual crap it left on my canteen cup. Time was usually not a big issue as we generally knew when the best times to cook. USUALLY! haha! Nothing like a simulated nerve agent attack right when you light your stove, which would happen on occasion.
Anyway, back in the late 1980s I didn't even know trioxane tablets existed until my buddy who was the Battery Petroleum Oils and Lubricants(POL) NCO saw me buying Esbit tabs at the military clothing sales store and told me I could have all the trioxane I wanted for free anytime. DONE! My experience mimics what most folks find. Esbits last longer but leave crap on your cooking vessel with a yellow nasty flame. Trioxane burns clean and fast with less heat, but I never needed a rolling boil from them. I don't think I ever got a trioxane tab that was intact. They were old stock from the Vietnam era but they worked fine. By that time MREs were on the scene and you plunked your pouches in your canteen cup with some water and heated 2 or 3 pouches at a time for a couple minutes, flip them over and heat the other end. A mess kit pan with just a little water made a great, fast "steamer" to heat a single MRE pouch fast. More surface area on the bottom and use the fork as a spacer to get most of the pouch off the bottom and cover with the mess kit tray. Or get the water hot to reconstitute a dehydrated pork(my favorite) or beef patty then heat a pouch of whatever you wanted hot. I'd go through 2 to 3 trioxane tabs at a time starting with two and adding the third if needed. if I did the above and had a hot drink and could get the same but faster heats with multiple tabs. I remember them as being smaller than these though, but it was a long time ago. I used a Kiwi shoe polish can as a burner and the lid as a snuffer an could us the leftovers to start the next one. Couldn't use them at night though, unless you were in good concealment and the flame would jack your night vision for several minutes. Our water was potable, so no need to boil for disinfection. They both work fine. For gram counters, Esbit is the way to go. If your a clean freak, use trioxane. Both work, it's just a matter of what is important to you. After about a year and a half, I bought a Coleman Peak 1 400 and a 550B and later ordered and signed for an M-1950 military stove. Same buddy ordered a drum of naphtha/white gasoline. He told me he ordered it so he wouldn't have to buy Zippo fuel for his lighter. HA! But, I didn't have to buy Coleman fuel after that either. I repaid him with fresh coffee. It's not like I was camping for the hell of it. It was part of the job. I never used fuel tabs again. I don't miss them a bit. They did their job, though.
The Esbit kit is pretty nice. I think they could have notched the top of the stove portion to let the heat go up the sides for more efficient heating of the pot. A taller wind screen would accomplish that as well. Looks like a solid kit with a nice stove stand.

I know this is an old video. Bought this when you reviewed it. Just never got around to commenting. I use Esbit cube to boil 12 ozs or less if not in a rush. I use the alcohol stove for over 12 ozs or in a rush. Mtn. House meals usually take 6-8 oz, the ones I use anyway. then a cup of tea is 6-8 ozs, so I am never really heating more than 12-16 ozs of water. So only tea or only Mtn. House...Esbit cube. Both...Alcohol.

Luke... I used Trioxane tabs in the Army, some 50 years ago. They'd be my choice simply for the clean, ODER free aspects. What is or was the COST of each of the tablets?? YOu did mention the Trioxane was cheaper but you never told the costs or pricing... two important things to consider when choosing a fuel.

Every time you take off the lid, it slows down the boil time. But with that rain and the cars goin by, you'll be hard pressed to hear it. I like to use the Coghlan's round fuel tabs, put 2 together, and set them on the rounded side cradled in a cotton facial round. The facial round might burn a little, but the tabs stay put. I usually get a boil quick enough and blow the fuel tabs out for later use(as a fire starter or to warm water for coffee/tea). The foil you use to hold the Esbit wafer is a good idea, and you can add a lil bit to the underside of your pot so it won't soot the bottom. It was important to wash that wet soot off when you did, cuz if you let it sit a while it gets sticky like molasses. Liked your experiment. ATB, Luke. Jb.

If the goal is to get up to temperature quickly, why not break up the cube into a few pieces? Yes it would burn more quickly, but you'd also be releasing more energy in a given amount of time.

No other stove is as flexible as the Nano that I have found. Make a video on the Firebox Nano 2.0 please?

Try turning the esbit cube upright so its standing tall. This exposes more surface area of the Esbit cube and allows for higher heat. It also reduced burn times though. I saw a difference of several minutes in my little test. I was only using 16oz of water though, for 24 oz you may want to stand two of them up so the bottoms are touching.
Here is the quick write up I did on the topic: www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/674400_Esbit_Folding_Stove_Experiment.html

Curious why 24oz? Most foods using 2 cups. If you are adding water for coffee, that only needs to be hot. I wander if the smaller volume,2cups then 1cup, would use less fuel bringing both to a boil as if the water was questionable.

well, that test kind of confirm that trioxane have less energy than esbit but burns faster. Both are great for heating your meal or as an emergency firestarter but not really practical for cooking with. Alcohol stove still rules :P. In any case, math says that Trioxane, using more tablets than Esbit to get the job done, is not really cheaper than Esbit... at least not as cheap as people believe...
BTW I have the same cook set but I only use it with the alcohol stove ;)

I'm very leery about using Trioxane long-term. I'm a Chemist by training so, I speak with some background.
Trioxane is a form of Formaldahyde, a known carcinogen. Think of it a a polymer of Formaldahyde in solid form. Most of it burns, so it is not a big problem, but a small amount does escape as a gas. You might notice an acrid odor when burning it. This is the Formaldahyde that is escaping. In a confined area, it can be a problem, and if you use it long-term, it can definitely cause some problems. The Military isn't to concerned, since that is the least of your worries.
I would stick to Alcohol, butane or propane, especially if you use it around children.
