- In this off trail adventure, Luke is hunkering down underneath a tarp as a severe thunderstorm rolls into the area.
BOOM - the ground shakes as the lightning strikes and the thunder echos amongst the mountains!
Due to a mistake that Luke made, he's forced to leave the safety of his shelter and face the storm before it is TOO LATE!

a few local kids a number of years ago found the tire while they were looking for quartz stones in the creek at the bottom of the hill. they decided that rolling tire to the top of the hill and then
kicking it back down to see how far it would go would be more fun than looking for quartz stones, of which they had found quite a few, and their pockets were full of them. it took them most
of the rest of the day to get the tire to the top of the hill. they took a short breather, and then found the perfect spot to kick the tire down the hill (it was real steep at that spot). the tire went fast and for a long ways and after a while they couldn't hear it crashing through the trees anymore. they were still tired from hard trip up the hill with the tire and decided to rest some more before
heading back down. turned out a couple of the kids had slings with them they had made for throwing stones (as in david and golieth), and they didn't really want to haul all those quartz stones
back down the hill. so, they all unloaded their pockets and took turns to see how far they could throw their stones, and the stones were just the right size for throwing with the slings.
they got a lot of really good throws, and they peppered the whole side of the mountain with those quartz stones, having a great time at it.
i think they all got home before dark. so, Luke, now you know all about the tire and the white stones. did you notice that all the stones you picked up were all the same size?
What a great explaination and very plausible. Sounds a bit like the beginning of a Stephen King book. Cue thunderstorm………
That's exactly what I was thinking.😊
My wife lost her car keys earlier this evening. Looked all over the house. I'd seen the video earlier and started doing the square eyes focused technique shown here. Wife looks at me as if I've three heads. I said Luke from TOGR did it to find things that are hard to find. Wife shakes head and walks away. She'd left them in the ignition anyway...
Air tags have saved me so much stress from missing keys purses etc. 25$ for peace and so much time not spent looking🔖
Funny 😄
Who is "we" ? Who is taking the videos in front and behind ?
@michaelhill Luke does it all. He spends a lot of time setting thr camera for his walking shots.
Luke, I appreciate every adventure you share with us. It doesn't matter if you're searching for an old tire or an epic view. Thanks so much.
Looks like a 50's 8N Ford farm tractor. From size of trees, it looks like your green forrest has been clear cut in the past.
My thoughts were along your lines. Probably some cast-off tire from some long-ago logging show. It looks like there was a noticeable absence of mature timber in that area.
Exactly my thoughts - including the long ago logging and the young trees.
Someone was farming on the steep side of a mountain?? Why would they do that?
That was my guess as well. I wasn't certain about what tractor. I was thinking skidder possibly.
I agree, the forest looks like regrowth & the tyre is old. likely older than the regrowth.
It’s a Skider tire. That means you’re in an old cut over. Loggers left it behind, probably it was flat and replaced on the Skidder right where it is.
Agree. Has that forest been planted for commercial reasons? Trees very close together
Likely from logging operation
Way too narrow for a modern skidder.
Prob some pneumatic agriculture tire.
Not unlike a Farmall or John Deere.
@@ascott6804 I agree as for modern machines. Back in the day when Timberjacks and Clarks with cable winches were the skider of choice they were running narrow tires like that!
Totally on the mark those pines are only 30-40 years old that forest is "new" growth @OpenAirOutdoors
Sometimes, old logging roads become overgrown and disappear over time. These roads might have been used decades ago for logging activities, and the forest has since reclaimed them.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
That's my guess
Yep. I’m sure he can see that off camera.
I was going to say a tornado may have dropped it off in the middle of nowhere, but an old, disappeared logging road works too.
I've heard that Ravens will collect stones they think are pretty. Maybe these are stones that Ravens have collected and dropped?
You are correct
I agree. Crows will also do this.
I was thinking the same thing.
Raccoons will also. Pretty much anything pretty or shiny to them is treasured.
Humans placed them as reflective trail markers.
Great job finding the tractor tire!!! I believe it got there during in the early 1900’s, when the mountains there were recovering from the deforestation that took place in the late 1800’s by the lumber companies that harvested the trees for America’s building material end of the 1800’s, and new growth trees planted after, were sparse and a tractor could be used to move about and across the mountain.
Maybe Bigfoot uses little white stones as trading currency and he has a hole in his pocket!
You could be on to something. Don't forget squatches often colab with aliens, maybe some local cryptids too
@@NathanHassall If you mean guys with a sense of humor, then I hope so!

Those white pebbles must be "rolling stones" because I see they gather No Moss.
and they are river warn.
😂😂😂😂funny
What a cool little forest! I bet that forest was clear cut in the 40s or so and they changed a tire and just left it behind. Strength and honor! -Keeley 🙏
Wish I were there. I love storms and camping out. I love watching your videos. Thank you!
I like how you touch the trees while you walk.. as if saying " hello.. excuse me "...
Mistakes and Failure are our greatest teachers.
well if that is the case britain tried it with russia, russia sent them packing, then america in the early turn of the 19th century russia sent them packing, Napolean tried with the help of europe Russia sent them packing, Hitl@r tried Russia sent him packing and now Ukraine by being used by America and Britain as a proxy, mmmmmmmmmmmmm i wonder mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
your teachers are not very good.
Like my Dad told me, experience is the best teacher, the lessons from bad experience, you never forget.
Yes but surviving those mistakes is the greatest trick!
You can say that again. They disappoint, humble, and show us where our limits are and places to beware of in the future, sometimes at the greatest painful cost.

Regarding the tyre. Ive been pondering this conundrum for many hours!
It may be a bit far fetched but ive come to the conclusion that someone possibly took it up there.
I wish i had your problem solving and logic but sadly i dont, so i just thought about it for a minute then realised i will never know, but then i realised that i didnt care how it got there amd moved on 😂

01:40 Very interesting old indian trail marker tree there. At least that's what it looks like. If anyone's curious, American Indians used to use bent trees as trail markers, though there is some debate about the extent and prevalence of this practice. They would intentionally bend young saplings to create distinctive shapes that served as navigational aids. These trees, also known as trail trees, marker trees, or signal trees, were used to designate trails and paths, mark crossing points on streams, indicate locations of medicinal plants, point to areas of significance like council circles, and/or warn of dangers ahead.
To create a trail marker, a Native American would select a sapling about 3/4 inch in diameter and bend it in the desired direction. The bent sapling would be secured using rawhide, bark, vines, or weighted down with rocks or dirt. After about a year, the tree would be locked into this bent position and continue growing in that shape. Authentic Indian trail trees typically have a sharp bend about 4-5 feet off the ground. The bent portion runs parallel to the ground for some distance before turning upward again and often points to a significant landmark or in the direction of a trail.
That's what that tree looked like that you passed there Luke. 'Least, to me.
I have a tree like that in my yard.
Big foot does the same thing.
You should try something on one of your camp outs. Walk about 35 feet away from your camp, to the North, South, East and West. Rig up trail cameras pointing outward. In the morning, gather them up and post the videos of what they saw as you were sleeping.
I love the sound of rain 🌧️ in the tarp. You don't have a tent? Why? You are always prepared. I love the thunder and lightning ⚡ with the rain. PHONOMINAL WARRIOR.
A tent for a day trip?
I only carry a tarp for day trips, why would I lug a tent around if I’m not out for the night? Luke obviously wouldn’t
I think you meant phenomenal. Warrior is overkill.
I have a question for you since I see you used the word in instead of on in your sentence about rain on the tarp. I see this use of in instead of on in a lot of different subjects and posts. Did I miss something? The way I learned is that the rain is on the tarp not in it. Thank you.
Your a real scandinavian...swedish, norweigan and ger from Finland...i like it...😊
Definitely one of the most "subwoofer friendly" episodes with all that thunder!
Even for a day trip he's prepared for the weather, knowing how wet it gets in this area. The forest looks like a planted regrowth after logging. If the tire is decades old then it probably belonged to the loggers. Great day trip with the bonus of rain on tarp.
Your videos are so calming and cinematic
yes very nice
Great. You moved the white stones off the trail. NOW how the heck are Hansel and Gretel going to find their way home??

Luke, I think the stones you find are brought there by crows. The stones all have rounded edges, indicating they come from a stream or river. Crows are known to be attracted by light-colored or shiny objects, and they are also known to "decorate" areas of consistent color such as your green forest. Those stones are the perfect size for them to pick up and carry.
At 1:36... I'm pretty sure that could had been an Indian broken tree marker..
Or Perhaps a SABAE marker... ( Hairy Man, Keepers of the Woods, Big Foot, Sasquatch.....)
I agree. Sure looks like one. Old Indian trick # 17. Wonder what it pointed to back in the day.
@@johnwilton7598 there hvent been indians tying trees in that forest for almost 200 years
@@coolbuffdad me thinks white man is guessing.
Hi Luke, I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. You and a lot of your followers are very knowledgeable and I learned so much, and It was fun to watch. Keep um coming.
Here in the Ozark region, things end up in the deep hills "normally" one of two ways.
1. Tornado
2. Bored kids
It's gotta be the tire of some forestry vehicle. They had an accident, someone came out with a spare, or they had a spare on hand (multiple vehicles) and they couldn't be bothered to lug the old one back. Something along those lines. If it's an older tire, environmental protection laws were likely way less strict back then.
Luke and the Weather play games with each other....its exciting !
Who is going to win on this trip ?
Is Luke prepared enough ?
Does the weather know what he has brought or not brought before deciding on a sprinkle of rain to displease him or a heavy pour to soak everything to make him uncomfortable....or just to play the checkmate position does the weather blast Luke out with a storm ?
Love this channel ❤🙏
Beautiful ⚡⛈️ storm to watch. Great video Luke. Reindeer stew looked positively delicious 🤤🤤
The tire. There once was a trail/road, long long ago. Trees grow super fast, we have some here in Nova Scotia growing inside home foundations. Pretty cool. I would have flipped it to see if there are any markings on the other side. Super interesting, good find Luke.😊
Simply wonderful. A new rainstorm video. Outdoors in the rain with Luke. A great day off for me.

That tree bent over then back up at 1:44 is an Indian trail marker. I grew up in western North Carolina and some of my Cherokee friends told me about this trail marker method. Indian highway markers. Cool.
I have heard of these before, if you take a compass sight along either side of the horizontal and average it out, then carry on, on that bearing will you come to another ? The white stones, a bird using them for nut smashing ? Or white stones reflecting what little sunlight there is and burning/killing the moss above it so they always stay on top ? Tractor tyre, I'd say too small for skidder. Got there when the woods were last cut over. Are there any never cut-over areas round there ?
Could be a squatch trail marker.
That’s awesome. I was wondering why they were formed like that.
Cool! Then Sasquatch uses the trail and leaves the white stones to tell if anyone else is following. He'll move to a new area now that he's been tracked.
Luke knows exactly what hes doing and how to entertain his audience.
The Stones are either from birds carrying them. Or when Moss grows if a stone is in the way of the growth it gets under the stone and eventually it is supported by the Moss and it remains on top. Strength and Honor.
G'day mate, Crows! The white sttones. If it was down under it could also be goanna's.
Thanks bloke.

It's so funny you posted this particular video today because yesterday RUclips sent me down a rabbit hole of multiple videos where people were the victim of lightening strikes. You were the first person I thought of. I love the storms, too :-)

What a beautiful place 👍
I love some of the imaginative stories about how those stones and that tire got there.
That forest looks like it's replanted. Where I live the forests were clear cut for lumber and firewood by the late 19th century and replanted in rows that looked just like that in the 1930s by the CCC. That tire looks to be left over from when that area was open fields. It's in a forest now but there was no forest there when the tire was left behind.
I love your videos and the forest. I think you have the best videos on RUclips.
Awesome adventure! I hope you made it out safely unscathed. Forgetting your headlamp was a major booboo.
Looks like a 2nd generation forrest that's been timbered out. The tire is a tractor tire that was on a tractor used to haul the timber out but got a flat. They just left it there.
Those white stones are the coolest thing about that green forest.
Real old tractors used to have smaller back tires than the ones today. There may have been a logging road there at one time and when the forest grew up and became denser, the road was taken back by nature.
You should follow the white stone trails to see where they lead...👍
Your review of the Terävä Skrama played a big part for my wife getting me one for Christmas a long time ago. That knife has been on a few hunting trips with me. Great for fire wood. Still have and it is a great survival tool coupled with a smaller bush craft knife say Mora Garberg.

@beacee--Same here in SouthEastern Mich.! Had one Nasty storm last Thurs with a Tornado warning.(No Tornado, but high winds & heavy rain, wich didn't last long.) And then high temps again with no more rain for a week! Doesn't help as we have had very little rain & high temps most of July & August!( The weather has been way hot & dry in a lot of places from what I here. Except in Connecticut & North Texas where they got flooded out! And the mountains of the Carolinas!) A lot of gardens have done really bad this year' too.

Hi from the UK too 😊
Another great adventure. Thank you.
FYI... there have been many studies of quartz pebbles on top of moss. It is a common occurrence.
It is a simple pleasure to walk into a pretty forest with a nice kit pack, tarp up and sit protected, looking out on a cool breezy rain. When you pulled out the stew and coffee it was perfect. Nice adventure. I kicked an old tire in the woods one time. Wasps had built a nest in the tire. CAREFUL…. Thank you from…east Tennessee.
P.S. Sometimes you gotta git while the gittin’s good…heh, heh…
Gotta love the Skrama ;) ...great knife !!
Btw Luke ..I was wondering is there a reason you don't use Poncho's much ??
I personally prefer them over "normal rainclothing " because of the breathability and versatility ...you can use em as a tarp/quick shelter , groundsheet , bivy ,...+ a poncho covers your pack so no need for a raincover.
Had that reindeer stew on the laugavegur trail in Iceland. Best meal ever. All their stuff is great. Pulled pork with rice on a tortilla with some hot sauce is another great one. Tortillas adds some carbs and calls.
I wish we could get some of that rain, we're in a summer long drought here in WV and every creek in the county has dried up. The dirt roads are so dusty that the dirt just hangs in the air for minutes when it gets disturbed.
Probably off a log skidder, powered by a GM Detroit 2 stoke diesel.
The sound of them roaring as they haul logs is quite an experience.
I attribute the white rocks on the ground to crows. 🐦⬛ They are attracted to bright objects.
Possibly a weather event, i.e., a tornado, carried the river rocks and tire to the mountain.
Usually, you don't do a grid search all by yourself. You need a team. And, you need a tent when you have an open ended project like searching for something. An overnight stay is always a possibility.
Reindeer stew, hazelnut coffee, a cool pack with a big honking knife. Cool gear. I'm guessing the stones are probably quartz, maybe dropped by Ravens.
Up on our "rim" is the largest Ponderosa forest in the world. In the old days caterpillars used cables to move the blade up and down. They must have worn out fast- you come across old twisted rusty cable all over. We could see the lightening flashing inside of the tarp.
That's an old farm tractor tire. I've seen plenty of those out in the woods. They are often clues as to the activities conducted in that area many years ago-especially if found in a present day pine forest stand. You said the tire was gigantic. Wait until you find an old tire from a Timber Jack Logging tractor!
0:12 - OMG, he is actually posing and he probably thinks it isn't weird and creepy. Epic condescension and narcissism.
Love that Varusteleka knife. Chances of getting away with that in the UK are pretty slim, though, it's almost a Sword 😅

The tire is off a tree skidder for logging. Great find luke
Bigfoot behind you at 7:13 dropping little white stones as trail markers😂
Great video Luke your videos are so relaxing.
Those white rocks are the proverbial rolling stones. And, you guessed it, they gather no moss.
In regards to the logging or forest service equipment tire there may be a date code on it to determine age. I'm not a vastly experienced hiker but I have come across forest areas that have old logging access roads where the forest plant life has reclaimed it - barely detectable. If you look at the patterns of the larger trees often you can see an open swath where the road was. As you well know mountains seem to have their own micro weather systems - must always be prepared. I've been caught in hail, snow, lightning and rain runoffs on the sides of mountain trails - not fun but survivable if you're ready for it.
This vid is so fun to watch. The commercials are for teens vid games. Lol
I think the wind storms blow those Little Rock’s everywhere🤓
I agree with others that it was clearcut in the 40’s-50’s and the tire was left after a replacement tire was installed. If you had the size of the tire along with additional information, i.e. manufacturer, it can probably be matched with the tractor it came from. I bet it’s a Goodyear. 😎👍🏻
Luke, I nearly crapped myself when I heard you say "I forgot my headlamp"!! LOL
That's why I carry an Olight Perun Mini (the original because of the wide angle) around my neck, ALL the time. I am never without light. Just saying ;-)
