Flying the Dornier 328 Jet in the USA

- Hey guys! After a nice stay in Clovis, New Mexico, it was time to head back up to Denver aboard the Dornier 328 Jet operated by Denver Air Connection. This route is part of the government subsidized Essential Air Service program which gives smaller towns air service that normally would be left out or without it completely. DAC just picked up the contract from Boutique in 2020 and I have to absolutely agree with CVN's decision to switch. The chance to fly a Dornier 328 Jet in the USA is a rare and special opportunity. But not only is it sweet enough to fly the D328Jet, DAC is also a pretty nice little airline with some very friendly folks working for them providing a generous service onboard that really stands out above most other US airlines. Would very much recommend giving Denver Air Connection a try as they fly to numerous destinations in Colorado, NM, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Hope you guys enjoy this special vid!

Wow….I wish all flights were as easy and stress free as this one. The Clovis airport looks like something from an old movie set. Great video…as usual! Music/editing spot on!
The Clovis airport looks like a renovated Sambos or Big Boy restaurant from the 1970s.
Love small passenger planes, it is always unique experience!
I remember last time I went to Amsterdam I flew in a Embrarer 175 on the way there and then a Bombardier turboprop (still the only time I've been on a turboprop) on the way back, two pretty unique planes as that route is usally just A320's galore or 737's
❤❤
I've never even seen a Dornier 328. What a great experience!
Never heard of a Dornier jet before! So I like your videos that enable viewers to fly virtually on different aircraft and to many destinations! Thank you! 🙂🛩
Great video! I can’t believe how tiny the Clovis airport is! And this is a pretty short flight! I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Back in 2006, I flew from Denver to Madison, WI on Midwest Airlines. The airline's main hub was Milwaukee (MKE) and the connection between MKE and MSN was on the Fairchild Dornier 328JET. It's a really nice little jet.
Thanks for this video, man! My wife is working in Clovis for the next 6 months and will be commuting back and forth to DFW. This will ease her nerves for the first flight home.
The airport in Clovis reminded me of the airport of my hometown here in Brazil when we were young - we could even cross the runaway to visit my grandfather's house. Of course, you cannot do it any longer hahahahaha
I am living near Munich and near the Dornier production and service plant. The daughter of my old school friend is doing shipment flies of new airplanes to customers and other flights i don't know about. I am happy that you were flying the 328 in the USA, as i am looking where in the world you can find them. Thx a lot for this nice vid!!! A lot of stuff i can ask my friends now.
loved flying on the 328JET out of Milwaukee to Des Moines on Midwest Connect, a great little aircraft - not the longest range, but it was not designed for transcontinental flights. Those PW306's really howl as they spool up. Very cool unique plane. thank you for sharing this! (just looked, this leg is now flown with an ERJ-145 as of 3/2/23)
One of your best reports. Love how you make the comments before landing with some facts and opinions! Excellent job!!!
What a treat....thanks!
I love that you show your surroundings a bit as well. Makes the trip report so much better imo
I really enjoyed this video. Particularly the beginning giving us the local color of Clovis. Music was very good, and caught the mood of the small town. Great Job
Visited Clovis several times on the way to Albuquerque. Always stopped at the Love's Travel Stop going into town to refuel. There's also a little well known Chimichanga place in town that serves really tasty chimis, worth checking out next time you go!
The Frontier airlines flight that pushed back at 18:17 is where I’m taking a road trip to next week and then Owatonna, MN and the twin cities. It’s also rare for a shuttle bus to carry passengers and a trailer at the same time.
Really nice vid. It's intetesting how tiny Clovis is, but so it gives a much more familiar atmosphere. Greetings from Germany 🙂
Great video, love Dornier!
Awesome video again I love watching these they just keep bringing me back and back love aviation and this aviation channel!
Thx for sharing. I didn’t even know about this route. I would love to fly on that jet someday. At the end of your video I saw a Metroliner. Back in the 90s I flew on those several times with Lonestar airlines from DFW to Harrison and Mountain home Arkansas. They had tiny airports like Clovis. Keep up the fun!
Great video really enjoyed your flight!!
Thanks for the short tour of Clovis, NM and your flight out.
Great job!
I've flown the Dornier 328 on Ultimate Air Shuttle between BKL-LUK. They have great service too with snacks according to time of day (i.e. cheese & fruit tray) & free alcohol. When you fly to LUK, they even provide free limo service to downtown Cincinnati. I've also flown the prop version of the 328 with USAir Express in the 1990s many times between CMH & IAD & RIC.
Simple & uncomplicated with a great snack service for sure 👍🏻
Nice video! A EAS route that you should try and that I have flown on is Contour's route from Phoenix to Page AZ operated on the ERJ-135. You not only get to see stunning views of the Grand Canyon and the landscapes but you also get to visit Page which is a pretty small town and see remote places.
Avgeekchannel Skyvator Productions has a video posted for this very route--Page is also in the middle of nowhere!
@@jasonmoors1191 Yeah it is.
Nice video. A very stress-free flight with all my favorite snacks! What flying used to be. I’ve never flown on a Dornier 328 Jet but have flown numerous times on the Dornier 328 Turboprop on Horizon Air out of Eugene, OR in the 90’s. It’s a bit strange I found this video this after watching a video of the Key Lime Air cargo / Cirrus SR22 mid-air collision over Centennial Airport back in March. I’m happy your flight had none of THAT kind of drama.👍🏼
I just flew on them from MSP to Thief River Falls MN and was impressed the large windows were great and the snack service was great.
Such a great looking aircraft! And really entertaining video :)
My dad flew the turbo prop version for Horizon Air in the 90’s
I highly enjoyed watching this video. It is as well-edited as a high quality movie. Out of curiosity, what is your favorite small town?
The CEO of that company is also a captain on the 328 he might have flown you there himself
I did this trip myself on Denver Air Connection on June 24 and 25, 2021. On those flights they used an Embraer 145 and, interestingly enough, CVN (Clovis) was fully-staffed with three TSA officers and bag and body scanners. So, no "good ol' days" for me! But, Denver Air Connection was top-notch and the people of Clovis I encountered were likewise. I may repeat the trip soon!
P.S. I stayed in the Super 8 as well! Wonderful staff!
You should fly in out of Silver City, NM if you think Clovis is remote. The airport is smaller, run by two ladies who show up and open up shortly before the flights. Grant County Airport.. Good bird watching at the airport. One of the ladies told me they used to have a pet roadrunner. Only connection was to Phoenix on turboprops. Silver City seemed to be growing a bit so hopefully there is still air service.
Glad to see it has air service. If you didn’t know Clovis Nm was there, you’d blink and miss it
Thanks for sharing this video,
Lovely little town of clovis and then flight from there to unconventional aircraft, I mean other than Boeing or Airbus.
If you have flown in any other such aircrafts such as DC9 or MD10 , please share those videos.
Thanks again to pin point the pointed Pointed Jappesen terminal building of Denver Airport, similar to Dulles.
So refreshing to clearly understand what the FA is saying unlike some of the major airlines and their flight attendants talk so fast it’s like verbal diarrhoea, totally incomprehensible! They may as well be speaking another language. They should take their safety roles more seriously and slow down.
Wow, that looked like an excellent flight Chris! Just curious given some let’s just say interesting experiences at one, how was the Clovis Super 8?😸
I flew between Clovis and Dallas in 2020, as the only passenger both ways, on a Boutique Air Beech King Air in 2020. I will ride a Dornier 328 from Minneapolis to Ironwood, MI on September 5.
Used to operate several EAS flight back when I was a pilot for CommutAir and they had BE-1900Ds. Our EAS routes included BOS-RUT, and SLK-ALB. Often times we would fly empty on the BOS-RUT route, just collecting the government money.
Yeah, times have changed quite a bit, haven't they! I'm nearing Part 121 ATP minimums and getting ready to board my first regional after a lot of Part 135 stuff. Heard anything on Denver Air Connection as far as pilots being happy there? Their pay package now is THE best in regionals... FOs are starting at $80K and Captains are making >$150K. I can't see a whole lot of room to complain, but they're hard up for pilots too and maybe there's a big downside to flying there in spite of the pay.
Only just came across this video by chance, you've done a great job putting it together, i'm impressed with the Dornier 328 even though it's a rarity, it's nice airplane, be great to see a video with the Dornier 328 and the Bae 146, a similar looking plane, a really nice video.
I noticed one of these jets while driving past Hawthorne Airport/ HHR this morning. I thought it was pretty unique looking, so I noted the tail number and looked it up. The plane I saw is used for commuter and charter service.
That airport had an Embraer sliding off the end of the runway a few days before New Year's Day. It looks like the damage to the fence and ILS equipment has been repaired. The people on board were OK, but I prefer the kind of flight experience you share in your video.
Oh no, got here only after the Michael Sharp carnage has begun!
- Red
Ugh, me too.
Wow, what a great little plane! It looks fairly comfy for it's size too. I have read this aircraft will be manufactured again, but I don't think by the original maker. Also the first version to be produced is a turbo prop.
Those were the full sized bags of M&M’s!
Flew on those jets when Midwest Airlines was around. Skyway Airlines (Midwest Connect) flew them and was the launch customer for the J328's.
It's always a good day when thejazzguy13 Avation uploads a video
Agreed 👍
Nice video. I'm going to try this very flight in flight sim with a Citation C510.
lol I was all like that is a security loop hole but having tsa until I saw the end lol
Nice. I enjoyed this one as well! 😁
I can't wait for the Metroliner III report!
I hope the deutche Aircraft gonna be succefull with the D328eco !
No TSA checkpoint, nice!
I remember reading about the D328 in Airliners (sadly no longer in circulation) and Airways magazines. If I remember rightly Ozark Airlines started up again using the D328. I live here in Fort Wayne Indiana which has become a regional jet airport except for Allegiant which now flies their A319's in here. I don't remember if anyone ever flew the D328 in to Fort Wayne. I can remember flying in and out of Fort Wayne on the DHC-7, Bae 146, ATP, Convair 580 and F-27 many years ago. I also flew on the DC-9, Boeing 737 and 727 too flying in and out of Fort Wayne.
wahou a nice little airport , with a good regional jet , exactly rare regional jet even in Europe ! but a good stol jet ✈👍
My question is does a small plane like this feel more turbulence or less ?
The Clovis airport kind of reminded me of flying out of Youngstown-Warren Regional back when it had regular service (Though YNG is a bit larger, and had a security checkpoint). In 2000, I took a Northwest Airlink Saab 340B from Youngstown to Detroit, en route to Baltimore. I kind of miss it, and I'm not sure if YNG will ever have scheduled service again after Allegiant left them high and dry
I had the opportunity to fly on the Dornier 328 Prop many years ago on Horizon Air from Eugene, OR to Seattle.
It's a shame that more of these planes weren't built... I wish we had an airline like DAC in the Southeast
Clovis is my home airport and now all the aviation you tubers are flying to the smallest airport possible lol
Dornier has a excellent performance history. But may be too small to be a serious contender in the Commuter aircraft using operations.
So how did you know the Stearman Biplane you saw was a PT-17 and not a -13 or -18? I used to own a N2S-4 which was the Navy version of the -17. Great fun to fly, but not very practical to be honest.
Hate to break it to you, but the middle of nowhere is in Glasgow Montana.

Cool video! I really enjoy your commentary throughout, and the fact that you fly to some pretty random destinations. I flew on a DO-328JET in 2003 with Delta on CVG-MSN; that was a fun ride on a rare aircraft for the time. Midwest Airlines had a number of them in service after the re-branding, but sadly that airline is no more. The plane looked awesome in that livery - Dornier 328-300 328JET - Midwest Connect (Skyway Airlines) | Aviation Photo #1281261 | Airliners.net
What happen to the airline?
@@RealDaveSkylark Midwest merged with Frontier Airlines in 2010 and ceased to exist. 😢
that ww2 plane is amazing.
Really nice footage of a rare type. Sorry to see you constantly having to feature most of this footage with almost nonstop subtitle comments. What a shame. You’ve shot video…..perhaps have a separate one expressing all of your many thoughts and facts ? 😊
You should fly on DAC again but this time to Alliance Nebraska on one of their metroliners
You said that already
Actually Michael, Zach from the planes guy flew there
Surprised they even operated the service with only 3 pax. Normally they would cancel that due to "technical reasons". I guess being a government subsidised service is different.
Great video! I clicked "Like" just to get it off 666.
Just gotta say, 'Go Bucs!' From Ontario Canada!
I wonder if the bulkhead seats still have three-point seat belts on the DorkJet, I only flew on it as a prop and it in fact did have them.
I could see TSA backing out of alot of smaller airports as a cost cutting measure post-Wuhan and having passengers shuttled around bigger connection airports for security checks.
Hope to see you fly into GSP soon. Great little airport. A lot more flyer friendly than CLT.
This jet doesn't seem to be too noisy on the video.
How is it in reality?
Why did they take you to the outer terminal?
damn they really come through now and ask if you're okay to open the exits lol
Deutsche Qualität ! 😁👍
Love the Video =)
Nice plane, looks a bit like the BAe 146... I like the smaller planes... Clovis is really out of the way!!
Great video 👍. Any car rental option in Clovis?
Who builds the engines of this airplane? Does anyone know?
what about air security was there any u could brought on a gun ?
Cool how you just ran into Zach from Jfk.Spotting/theplanesguy on that flight
Was planned bro :D
@@thejazzguy13 how do you put up with Michael Sharp?
@@garrett5643 How do any one of us put up with him? I simply grit my teeth, groan and glumly accept that there is free speech on YT--sigh!
Ultimate Air Shuttle operated out of Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport. Flew on their Dornier 328 jet a few times. A unique and enjoyable experience
I can't believe there was not a security checkpoint ! Kinda scary to me !
trust me.... Thats not middle of nowhere.
i can tell you where it can be found.
try this place...
Midway Island, United States Minor Outlying Islands
not flying. flying aboard. as a passenger..
Hey Chris.... Just rewatching your AS 'Milk Run' video. Just an FYI.... In pilot and controller (et al) communications, Runways are referred to as - Runway Two Eight, rather than Twenty-eight. Where there are more there are parallel runways it would be - Two Eight Right (28R), and Two Eight Left (28L).
I’ve been to Clovis in boutique pc-12
He landed farther than normal.. then slammed the plane down...poor 20 year old plane
They are now flying 145’s.
Gotta fly into Pocatello
Dornier 328 from Dornier German, the small commercial plane in the world use two model but with one design / one fuselage.
Dornier 328 , use turbofan engines model - use turboprop engines as ATR 42/72, DASH 8 Q300/400, MA60, AN24, N250 /N250 100.
For turbogan engines as BAe 164 but with two engines ( BAe 164 with 4 engines ).
Dornier 328, the unique aircraft with two engines type, turbofan / turboprop. Cute, good.
///(#CROCITLMYYPDPODSSS2031PMWIT12292022#) ///
How many seats are on that plane?
Cool
How much is this trip?
This video was taken during the Colorado Wildfires which the smoke and haze was really bad in Denver and in Colorado and elsewhere because of this and Rocky Mountain National Park burned to the ground because of these wildfires, but luckily an early snowstorm was able to put out the wildfires
3 passengers doesn't even pay for the gas. Not to mention the crew, insurance, lease, etc... it's a wonder they stay in business
From my understanding the city pays X amount a year for X amounts of flights and then the passengers also pay. That may not be exact but it’s something along those lines as I know DAC won the bid from the previous regional airline on one of their routes by being 7million less so the city went that route.
You had to have been on the same flight as Skylite Productions lol. He just uploaded the same flight same plane same destination

When you attempt to copy me and be funny but is not successful at all and just plain stupid. The only thing more stupid is liking your own comments.
$150 says the other like is your other account.
Ok to Pierre SD!
I wonder why these jets never really took off in this country, NO pun intended!
