I have seen this growing up in India around naval bases - where it was used daily for coastal surveillance. Its also widely used for civilian airlines for remote far flung areas (Vayadoot airlines) in hilly and mountainous areas with limited airfields, over a 100+ were made under licence in India.

Our forces have been using the best equipment even if the West has for some reason forgone it.

We had Vayadoot at our US operators conference many year ago and they were not in love with this a/c. The wings interiors are highly saseptable to corroisin in salt air operations.

The DO 228 is a product of 50 years age.
I still remember the 3-view drawings on my desk near Lake Constance.
Conceived in the 70ties it was thought as a replacement of the former DO 28.
it combined a sturdy rugged design for simple robust applications built around a high lift system dating back even into the early Dornier years.
Being unpressurized (squared fuselage cross-section) its altitude is limited.
General Atomics lives on the carcasse of an outdated design being suggered with ever renewing avionics.

Its amazing design! If General Atomics bring the Do 228 back to the 21st Century will be a very sucessuful project, and people who say that the Do 228 is not reliable never have get close or fly on it, go General Atomics bring them to life

We eventually had 16 a/c operating. We HAD high hopes for this a/c. It should have been a reasonable replacement for the Twin Otter. It is NOT. This a/c had more mechanical issues than I have ever seen in my 50 plus years in this business. Unless the 228 has had dozens of major changes it could be a very costly and unreliable a/c for any operator.

@@tristanjacques This is a very good plane for it's purpose. Saying it's bad, is like you say: A Truck is bad, a Ferrari is much better b.c. u like to drive fast but forget that there are jobs like transport. It's also nothind special for a plane to be very old and still build with some modifications. Just take a look at the Boeing 737 for example :D And sorry that my comment was a bit toxic, it's just b.c. of all the stuff i read all day on youtube :D

They have made the Do-Stra, via the Huanebu Program back in the early 40’s. Today it’s known as a ‘UFO’.
