  • The car is a 2012 Chevy Cruze with a 1.8 liter motor (this may also apply to a Chevy Sonic with the 1.8 motor). It even tells you when the timing belt is due for a change.
    To get to the timing belt you have to remove a number of things from the engine and the body of the car. This video will be focusing on this because this is what takes the longest.

    For clarification, the balancer bolt isn't a reverse torx, it's called an E-Torx. Using a 6 point socket is a great way to round off/strip it.

    Good vid bud. I do a lot of work to my car myself but I was debating weather this was worth tackling or just paying someone. After watching this it looks doable. Thanks.

      Just pay someone to do it... I work on my Cruze too. But I had to take it to shop for the timing belt change. Cost me $680... The cheapest I could find.

    • @OhYeaMista
      @OhYeaMista 5 лет назад +5

      Olugbenga Ogunfiditimi $680 seems like a decent price, glad you got it done. But I can probably do it for $200 in parts... don’t know about you but I don’t usually make $480 for one day’s work. If you’re driving a cruze I assume you don’t either 😁. If I can take a Saturday and get it done it’s well worth it to me. Plus I like doing things myself if I have the tools and ability to do it.

    the first real hurdle was trying to decipher the timing marks. figured that out by taking still photos of the video and comparing it to my car. a close up of the marks would be beneficial to future shade trees like myself. other than that it was a very helpful video, it can be a daunting task seeing all the parts you have to remove but one step at a time!

    You have said there are many videos on RUclips aligning the the timing marks on the cams and crank which I have not found in my language which is English, not Spanish or Russian. Can you offer a link showing the alignment marks that you say are so prevalent on RUclips?

    Air filter and oil change I can do, best if I just get the timing belt changed at the mechanic. I’ll mess it up easily

    This was easily the best instructional video I'd seen, right up until it got to the belt changing part. Then it was a case of "Others have probably already videoed this part, so I won't. Good luck".
    Has anyone actually found a clear video of the belt changing part? Looks like others in the comments are equally frustrated!

    what if the installation timing is correct, but the engine shows DTC, "P0011 - Camshaft Position 'A' Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Bank 1

      +atep kusnawan Thank you for the comment. This sounds like a sensor issue, if the cam shafts are aligned properly and everything else is correct, the cam position sensor may be faulty or the crankshaft position sensor, check both for damage or misalignment or if they are even connected properly.

    am trying to put the new timing belt on. I had the locking tool in place between the camshaft sprockets with marks for all three sprockets sitting where they needed to be.
    Upon attempting to slide the new belt on, I had the crankshaft sprocket on the bottom actually rotate clockwise about a 1/2 tooth. I am unable to simply rotate it back counterclockwise because the bolt is not a reverse thread and therefore doest grab going on that direction.
    What would you recommend at this point? I still have the top camshafts locked in place with their timing marks in the proper position.

    QUESTION. Putting that jack under the OIL PAN and jacking the engines weight won’t BEND the oil pan?

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +1

      Good question, thank you for the comment. To answer this remember in this case the amount of weight on the jack is about 30 pounds because the rest of the mounts were still in place. If 30 pounds would dent that pan there would be bigger problems with road debris. Also we made sure that we didn't have a single narrow point contacting the pan.
      If I was doing the same to a V8 or rear drive car where any one mount could hold hundreds of pounds, then I would use a pad to distribute the weight over a larger area.

    How do you turn the timing belt tensioner for the key to line up?

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you for the question. I'm not sure I understand but here is what I think you are asking for. During removal of the parts to line up the timing marks on the crank and cam pulleys, use a wrench on the crank shaft bolt to turn it until the marks line up. Then you can remove the timing belt tensioner to release the belt.
      When installing the new belt make sure that the timing marks are still aligned and that they stay that way until the new tensioner is bolted in place and then you pull the pin on the tensioner to activate it.

    What size reverse torque socket is needed?

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  5 лет назад +1

      There are several reverse torx, E-Torx or female torx socket sizes needed (same part different names), they are not available in all tool stores yet but Amazon has many sets available at reasonable prices. The Chevy Cruze and the other GM models seam to be moving to this style of fastener.

    If I use the timing belt locking tool would I have to worry about the crank moving and are the timing marks just on the crank and cams

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  6 лет назад +2

      The tool is useful and saves time. There are many videos showing how to use them and I recommend watching as many as you can to make sure you know what is to be done. Once the marks are aligned the tool keeps the cams in place the crank is not held in place and care needs to be taken to keep it in place. The cams align to each other, the crank aligns to a mark on the block.
      The reason for this video was to show everything else that the other videos don't show. Such as everything that has to come off just to get to the timing belt.

      You make it look so easy but is hard , at the time to synchronize everything whit the marks , a mechanic is charging me 500 only for labor , I'm thinking to save 500 more for the down payment to get a new car

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  6 лет назад +2

      Working on a car is not for everybody. Some do it because they like the challenge, others do it because they were trained and have the skills, some do it because they have no other choice and for some it's a labor of love for the car or for the person driving the car. If you don't fall into one of these groups, find a good mechanic and let them do the work.

    Excuse me, you say the car tells you when to replace the belt, but I have a chevy trax and don't know if it has that feature. Is there a predefined interval? Also, where does it tell you? Is it right on the dashboard, or through the OBD?

    • @HowWeDoIt_HowTo
      @HowWeDoIt_HowTo  6 лет назад +1

      On the Cruze it is in the center of the instrument cluster a message display tells the driver every time they start the car. The interval is based on engine run time for this car.
