Always played the genesis version, so I never knew SNES version's music was that outstanding. That's some of the best sampling I've heard on the SNES !

+Enrique Del Risco Point moot, as LJN was exclusively a publisher. AVGN covered this as well. LJN just had an uncanny ability to contract their licenses to some super-shitty developers, so they still bear some responsibility whether the outcome was good or bad (mostly bad).
Oh come on, The Punisher for NES is a pretty good game too.

Fun fact: Toby Mcquire actually did the cafeteria scene without CG animation. He practiced that scene specifically for 2 weeks.

I beat it. There are extra lives and hidden bonus rooms everywhere. It is a hard game, but being able to stack up extra lives and continues make it beatable

I just wish y'all would have mentioned the difference in Carnage's laugh specifically. That thing is hilarious on the Sega version. It actually creeped me out when I was a kid.
This one brings back the memories. Rented Maximum Carnage on the Megadrive many times. Found it to be a very hard game and didn't get far.

@Console Wars you mentioned toward the end of the video that the music on the snes version sounded like it came from a band. lol,it's funny cause the music did. the band green jelly did the music for the game. they were around briefly in the 90's. had a couple of hits like "3 little pigs" and "the bear song". they were a decent rock band you should give a listen. anyway just wanted to mention that. awesome episode 🖒😎

Im weird.. Over the years Ive watched every episode of this series over 5 times each at least. I dunno I find all 3 hosts incredibly likeable; like we would have been friends back in high school.

There is another minor difference between both versions you did not mention. In the Sega Genesis version, Doppelganger makes an "UGH" sound the first three times you hit it and on the forth, it makes a water like sound. In the Super Nintendo version, it does not make the "UGH" sound but it does growl when you hit it the forth time. It is strange how Doppelganger has unique sounds on both versions.
Another edge to the SNES version in my opinion is the button setup. The A button on Genesis pads is usually just a bit too far from the edge to be used comfortably so I prefer it to have an action I would use the least, but in this game, it's the attack button, and the B button is for jumping while the C button is for special moves. On the SNES controller, my right thumb rests comfortably on the Y and B buttons which are for attacking and jumping respectively.

I agree the snes music sounds good but I actually prefer the genesis music by a lot, it gave the game its own feeling that I never forgot about. Its hard to put a finger on, but if I hear some of those sounds anywhere else I associate it with this game where as the snes music, while it sounds good, reminds me of other music rather than creating its own musical theme.

Great vid as always guys. I remember playing this for the first time at a friend's house on his Genesis back in the day and couldn't beat it during the rental period. Never played the SNES version until many years later when I discovered SNES emulators for the first time and was amazed at how much better the music was.
Anyways, keep up the great work and hopefully the next game was bought for a dollar! :)

We somehow managed to end up on the same bill as them last year for one of our tour dates, and I was honestly so disappointed they didn't play anything from this game lol.

Also, the sound comparison would be better if you had a model 1 Genesis. The model 2 doesn't sound as good due to Sega cheaping out on their sound amps.

I remember seeing this game in EGM or Gamepro and was surprised to see that the Genesis version scored higher in the Graphics/Sound/Control categories than the SNES did.
My sugestion: two run'n gun games with some shoot'em up levels (well, one of them has more shmup levels than walking ones) that let you select multiple weapons and push their respective consoles to their limits: Gunstar Heroes VS Rendering Ranger. Althoug RR is too expensive so you'd need a flashcart.

bros. this is THE game that made me realize that the sega and super Nintendo werent the same console. i had the sega version and was so perplexed as to why the music was so shitty compared to the rocking soundtrack on our family super Nintendo.

A - Zero Lol, you're kidding, right? I KNOW you don't believe that. The sound is infinitely superior on the SNES on the vast majority of games. The Mega Drive can do techno music quite well, but apart from that it's piss-poor musically, and you know it.
The MD has epic strengths compared to the SNES, but don't BS about the music being better.
I'm in the minority that I prefer the Genesis music and sound over the Snes. Sounds more arcade like and more punchy. Snes versions songs and such sound so gritty and muddled. Just doesn't do it for me, personally.

the music in this game is how i found out about green jelly. it also has the song mob rules from black sabbath. played this game so much as a kid. one of my all time favorite games.

Both versions are extremely close. Like this might be the most identical multi-platform release of the 16 bit era
I seriously do not understand some people's mindsets. Let me take you to school here, ladies and gentlemen...
1: Doing Super Mario World vs Sonic the Hedgehog would be, without a shadow of a doubt, an absolute convoluted mess. And why am I saying this? Because they are two different games. One involves exploring and discovery, the other is about getting from one point to the other. One involves secrets, the other is about getting a different ending. Two different concepts, why compare them?
2: Each game represented their respected brand, and to put them against each other would be as pointless as it was back in 1991. Remember the "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" campaign? Remember "Blast Processing"? It was all one big dick waving contest, and to put these two completely different games against each other would be just an extension of that contest.
3: Each game has their flaws, and I think the only reason you people would want that is to defend your precious SNES. Well guess what? Super Mario World has it's fair share of flaws, so don't think you can hide from that. It's the nature of the beast, and it continued well into the next generation with the PS1 and N64, then the Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox, and so forth. But the point I'm getting at here is this: You can say Super Mario World is better than Sonic, and you're entitled to say that. _HOWEVER..._ Using it as a means to say Sonic sucks is shallow and very lacking of thought process.
4: Is it really necessary to request it over and over and over again? Why not compare two games that are the same genre, just under a different name? A good example would be Darius Twin for the SNES and Sagaia (Darius II in Japan) for the Genesis. Both games are similar in gameplay, but with several differences between the two. That would be something I personally would like to see, not Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog.
With all this said, please stop requesting it, because it gets really old really fast, and it makes watching these videos and comparing opinions with other users a real pain in the ass.
On the plus side, to the creators, GREAT EPISODE! I played the Genesis version a lot growing up and I consider beating it a crowning achievement as a gamer.
You should also do Separation Anxiety which is basically a sequel to Maximum Carnage with Co-op
