    Do you spend too much time Hating on your voice? It’s time for a game! It's natural to focus on the things you don’t like about your voice. You might get so stuck on the bad stuff, that you completely miss what’s (or GREAT) about your voice. In this video, I’m going to demonstrate how to analyze your voice and pick out what’s good so you can build on those strengths. Great singing is about recognizing, developing and playing to your strengths! Let me show you how to do that!

    I’m a vocalist (harsh and clean) that’s been doing vocals for about 10 years now, and have never had an actual lesson before. And between you, extreme vocal institute, and kardavox academy, I have improved tremendously. I still feel my clean singing is a little rough, but screaming or gritty singing, I now feel comfortable and confident. Thank you sir, all 3 of you need more credit for doing these types of videos for us

    There's a tone I get when I intentionally sing sloppy. It's like I get in character which works for the music I like making and it all gels together nicely. Majority of the time I can't get it right but when I do it's a great feeling. Must try for it more and work out why exactly I'm doing to get it. I prefer singers who have and use their own unique voice vs technically great singers

    Hey there Chris! I am a HUGE fan of your work, although I've only been aware of you for a short span of a few weeks. I LOVE your ability to linger on notes whilst using such a rich and varied palette of hues and tinges. You can sing the Blues and that Grunge / Alternative Rock / Alternative Metal kinda stuff like it's no-one's business. I'm still VERY new to actually trying to sing, but I like the sense of darkness to my voice. It's a kind of bellowing I suppose. A hint of grit whilst in a lower register. I don't know if I'll ever be able to cover a wide range of notes and colours, but I may or may not be cut out to sing a fairly decent Blues Rock. Thanks for yet another stellar video! I actually save many of them to a playlist where I can revisit them! Kind regards.

    Then I think back and kinda go over what I did with my voice.
    Tho like most ppl, I hate how I sound recorded. I think that bit of reverb helps.
    Usually we think we sound better in our heads while we're singing vs a recording. It's like a recording has less color and bass in it.

    This is awesome. I have a very clean and girly voice (Kind of like Sarah Mclachlan's voice)
    But ever since I was a teenager what I wanted was to sing powerful rock songs. More I tried more I felt useless because I couldn't achieve that rock grit/rasp. It was always so clear. I got fed up and decided to take a break from singing. I still can't get that grittiness. But I have finally started embracing my voice. I sang songs within my range and ones that suit my voice. I have more confidence now and I'm working to improve the voice I already have instead of focusing on getting a higher range. In the process I was able to expand my range by 2 notes, which is a big deal for me. I came across your wonderful channel. Now I am taking it slow (didn't discard my dream of achieving that grit yet!). I am still unable to do it exactly the way I want but I know it will take time now and I am willing to put in the work.
    What I like about my voice- the vibrato and the emotion I put in to it.

    It's a useful "game", thank you! Personally I like two things, one is my technique, at this point I have total control of dynamics, raspiness, mix, etc. and I love that, it equals freedom to me. However, the other thing I like is also what some days I totally hate, which is my timbre. It's kinda warm, but "feminine" at the same time. I sound like nobody else (which is good but also bad, because people tend to like familiar voices), and sometimes I appreciate it, but other times I wish I had a deep voice to sing like folk singer-songwriter stuff and I'd be happy with it. It's a continuous battle, but I'll try to record my songs in a way I can accentuate the good parts of my voice instead of trying to desperately change what I don't like. So thank you so much for these tips!

    The voice I hear in my head as I sing sounds good, but when I listen to it on recording, I am not a fan. But to go with the theme of the video, I think it's my aggressive singing has some flashes of coolness. Some high, compression-based gritty notes come across better than my clean singing. I've also focused a bit lately on fry-screaming as well, since that doesn't turn out too bad for me. One last thing, I recorded myself singing a parody song I wrote, and after adding some grit at the beginning of the phrase, I cleaned it up and had a nice vibrato on a held note at the end of the phrase, which was completely on accident, but it gave me some hope that maybe if I learn more from you or others like you, I can improve and do things like that more intentionally going forward.

      That’s because you can’t ever hear what other people hear. You hear your jawbone vibrating and it’s closer to your ears than other people. The best singers trust the feeling in their bodies, not their ears. I get really frustrated with my recorded sound versus my experience of the gig.
      But if I’m in my body, and no longer listening so hard, I get better.

    Hallo Chris, thank you for this video. As I have seen a tittle "stop hating your voice" i went right to watch it!!! Becouse it is exactly my problem 😓 I started to feel it after some friend did wierd comment on my singing i was sending them. At first, i did so much work in it and everything, enjoying it, feeling good, than listened to it. I felt so proud of my self. Started sending it to my friends, posting it on my fb. Thinkink people will like it. But i got horrified. Recieving comment of Friends telling me "You sound like a cat beeing tortured, hahaha", "please delete this video, you didnt sing single word correct!, "You shall not be singing this song becouse your voice is not cappable of this", "stop doing this becouse you are not good, why not have different hobby friend?" Just very few friends gives a courage and says thay like it. Others just hate it I realize. And I so much need to hear I am good. I started hating my voice so much! I just dont get it why its so hard to impress someone? So I must be realy terrible even I do excercises. (I am learning male singing also female voice singing, becouse I like it, and its realy not eazy 😟 even I think sometims I am good, uh)

    every single time I record to check how it sounds, I end up deleting because how awful I "think" it sounds. even though this complements very well the other video about how to at least try not to be ashamed of my own voice, actually doing it is kind of hard. following your advice, I should start listening to my voice as an experience and not as something that must be perfect "or else is not good"

    Well only things that I don't like currently are;
    a-Wish I had just a few more notes at the lower end of my vocal range. My lowest note is F2 so... yeah.
    b-The edge sound from SLS. Its temporary but I can't toggle between easily.
    And these are things that can be worked on. So yeah...

      warming up beforehand, (maybe even literally drinking warm water) is usually good and gets me able to go down a bit further than usual, sometimes even like a whole m3 lower than usual
      try it out

    Serious question, I don't like anything about singing voice at all, even my own speaking voice. I can't find anything about my voice that I like no matter what I try to look for. It's honestly very discouraging for me because I enjoy singing and have original songs I wanna sing on, but no matter how many times or what I try, I just hate my own voice. Is there any advice anyone has to help me through this?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 года назад +2

      I think this video is SO important for you then! You need to start picking things out about your voice that you LIKE and focus on those things. If you take the mental approach that you can't find ANYTHING... then you have a defeatist mindset and you won't progress beyond it. Focus... Think positively and FIND IT! :)

    I love my tone, it’s very warm yet still bright, it’s this balanced tone between someone like Howard Jones and Chester Bennington. I like my intensity that shows a lot of emotion and expression and control. I love my screams and distortion, it’s a very “screamy” sound and it makes me feel like with it I sound that much more unique. I love how I can go between chest voice, to mix, to mix with distortion, and then a full on scream.

    I think the problem why many people hate their own voices is because they want to have an academically 'correct' voice, and due to that they often become too self-conscious. They do not realise that the imperfections are exactly why people are interested in listening to our favorite singers, NOT because their tones 'sound correct'. Imagine if Stevie Wonder sacrifices his signature nasality for the sake of sounding academically perfect - his songs would have never sounded the same!
    People should embrace what makes their voices different and accordingly work on those strengths they have, while also ensuring that they are also improving in their weaker areas.
