    I think people forget that she was a teenager and grew up very naive and isolated, she probably had no idea the people were starving

    I actually like this scene. I think they should have kept it in. It shows that she was stuck in a kind of gilded cage, even before The Revolution.

    Great scene. It's a shame they cut it out of the movie. Maybe for a shorter running time but still I love the way this scene shows Marie somewhat moody and seemingly more bored.

    She WAS very lonely and isolated. She was an innocent and clueless girl who was basically sold into slavery at 14 (her own mother arranged this!)ripped out of her home and married by proxy to a man who hated her, living in a castle full of people who despised her, being blamed for lack of a baby because her husband either had no clue how or simply played dumb for as long as he could. That poor girl got shafted from start to finish.

      @gabrielarangel8876 6 лет назад +24

      It was an arrangement that would unified French and Austria (this kind of situations happened a lot by those times..), Louis didn’t hated her; he was just so young and inexperienced as her. They barely knew each other.
      In fact, when the time passed, he felt in love with her. (That’s why he gave her the petit Trianon)
      They weren’t able to consume their marriage since he had a little problem that made sex painful for him.
      In conclusion, both of them suffered since no one of them wanted to get married or became king/queen since they were too young and inexperienced for this kind of responsibilities . You just can’t blame her mother or her husband

      And you are one of the biggest imbecile. Such a stupid statement, such a lack of education and such incompetence to understand the past. I've read many stupid comments in RUclips, but this one must be the most stupid of them all.

      Louis didn't hate Marie Antoinette. He was intimidated by her. She was very attractive to him. Deep down, he loved her very much, but was intimidated by her beauty and extroverted personality to his antisocial very introverted personality to make a move. Louis knew the People were starving, but he wasn't the right person to rule. He did try his best, but he ultimately failed. She was out of his league

      yes Louis (the man who hated Marie) offer Marie the most expensive jewel necklace in the world, which she declined and response that we need 50 ships instead of necklace, also the necklace would be considered outdated as it was created for madame du barryy which marie loath

    Why does every time they show Marie Antoinette in this scene it looks all dark and when they show everyone else dining it looks all illuminated? Its as if if she wasn't even there with them like if she is in a separate room, i don't know if the darkness is suppose to demonstrate how she feels or something. And in this movie she dresses much more simpler than the real Marie Antoinette would have, even the costumes of the other people there dinning are more accurate. But don't get me wrong! I like the movie, this scene (especially because of the song!) and the her costumes, I just don't think its that accurate, I mean the thing I love the most about Marie Antoinette is that she wore exaggerated dresses and hair! This movie doest really show all the Pzazz except in a couple of scenes, I mean, Wasn't she the Queen of Fashion?!!! Other than that I think they are pretty, simple, but pretty.

    • @JuanitaRichards
      @JuanitaRichards 10 лет назад +33

      Yes, the saddest parts of her life were deliberately filmed darker to show the lonliness and isolation of her life at the French court. The costumes were researched meticulously and Marie was known to have tried to change the fashions at court by rejecting the restrictive corsets and clothing to more simple easy to wear styles

      oh ok

    • @JuanitaRichards
      @JuanitaRichards 9 лет назад +6

      FlippyingOut They didn't show in this film all that happened to them after they were locked away, but this film was more about showing us who she really was and the challenges she faced as a newcomer, 14 years old, at the French court.

    • @janeyrevanescence12

      +Sincerely, Arianna I think they were going for a deconstruction of the myth of Marie Antoinette. We know her as the beautiful queen who spent and splurged until she got her head hacked off. In reality, while she was no angel, she was a young girl thrust into a world with no real guidance of surviving through it. I think this was a wise choice because it does show what a lonely life she led which makes her downfall that more tragic because she was a product of her environment.

    as a history professor, it's difficult for me to watch a period piece movie, b/c I'm constantly noticing flaws. Coppola's film is full of these flaws and they give MA a completely different personality.....she never drank (even wine) only "orange water", there is no proven evidence that MA and Fersen ever had a physical relationship, Louis XVI was a bloated insecure ruler (not the handsome young man in the movie).....I could go on.....but won't because it's sounding like a lecture on trivia

      george fain I don't think so, I would be very interested in what you know about her true "historical self" / the weaknesses of this movie c:

    • @bonniescott2733
      @bonniescott2733 5 лет назад +17

      george fain It’s not supposed to be historically accurate, it’s trying to capture the thoughts and feelings of the time in visuals we recognise. Marie Antoinette would look and act very differently from a teenager from today, but in the movie she acts in modern ways that we recognise (partying, drinking, dressing up, etc) so that we as an audience can understand her a little better.

    • @itsthefluorescents4777
      @itsthefluorescents4777 5 лет назад +8

      You’re right but Coppola was trying to capture Antoinette’s vulnerability since she was the teenage queen after all and everyone seems to forget that about her. It’s not supposed to be historically accurate it’s more of a modern take to illustrate her young and vulnerable self

  • @robertn800

    I really liked this movie but some things bothered me such as LouisXVI was pretty fat at this time, but Coppolla felt the need to hire a relative for the part. And Mme DuBarry had impeccable manners and LouisXV would never have an Official Mistress who would embarrass him. But I loved they were able to film at Versailles. All in all it captured “the sweetness of life” before the revolution, that Tallyrand wrote about.
