The gore of the original also looked much more detailed and satisfying. Even with different blood particles depending of where the blood is coming from (notice the bullet impact blood is not the same as the arterial blood coming from amputated limbs). In the new one they all look like a snooker ball falling over a red paint can and there is no variation of texture or looks. This is just not how blood looks at all.
It's strange, it's fine if I'm playing as I expect it but the flashing in a video obviously isn't controlled by me so it has this weird effect, not quite a headache, not quite motion sickness, but it's some weird inbetween.
If I had epilepsy, it would have given me a seizure for sure..... good thing the PC version doesn't have this issue and functions more like your standard railgun shooter.
“At this point, a 20 year old lazy PC port has more options for the player than a 2022 remake does.” This is literally modern gaming summed up in one sentence.
@@javierortiz82 Sports games aren’t really my thing, but I 100% believe that just based on the direction that gaming in general and news about other EA games lmao. This shit is seriously a shame.
I feel like the gaming industry is somehow envolving backward. Aside from a few good tittles and most of the indie's ones, most games nowsaday just feel like watse of storage space and money for me. Especially mobile games. At this rate, I would rather take my old potatoes of a PC out of the warehouse to play my old and owned CD games.
Not only they lack in content department but every AAA must be 50gb at least even if they are most basic games, devs never been as lazy as they are today, even if they delay their games their incompetence will show (cyberpunk, horizon, last cod and bf)
As a diehard HOTD fan, I'm one of those people who wholeheartedly believes this remaster has the potential to be truly awesome on PC with mods. I really enjoy what they have so far, it just needs some polishing work, a music replacement mod, some animation tweaks (ragdolls are a bit funky, the scientists are janky af and the corpses bloating up look terrible), and perhaps most importantly, some hard tweaking to the Chariot and Magician boss battles. I cannot excuse those two. They are appalling. Everything else is nearly 1:1 to the original and I couldn't be happier, tbh. EDIT (05/07/22): After extensive gameplay sessions I can conclude this game is a mess on anything above Normal difficulty. Enemies have randomized damage and reaction times, which is absolute nonsense in a game supposed to reward quick reflexes and careful aim. Some attacks aren't even telegraphed properly and enemies have a tendency to zoom towards you prepping attacks way outside of their range, way faster than you can account for, and some are even completely unavoidable. Arcade mode/Hard on 1CC is nearly impossible as a result. There's no saving this game.
I just wish they would release the older games agian, still makes me salty that they didn't release 4&5 on PC. Japan has always had a weird habit of refusing to make older games available again for some reason... Especially for PC!
@@Taltz100 PC gaming is incredibly niche in Japan. It has a reputation of really only being for porn games. Heck, console gaming is sort of dying over there since everyone's too busy living and dying for their jobs to have hobbies and such.
"Pre-set death animations are always gonna be better than just some crappy physics system applied to something and calling it a day." I agree and disagree with this, pre set animations can be both worse and better than just ragdolls... it all depends on the animations being smooth, and not being in a place where they'll clip into objects, but the best system is combining the two. Combining the two is what gives you the visceral satisfaction in games like L4D2, where you're fighting off hoards of zombies, and when the zombies are killed, they stumble for a few steps before ragdolling to the ground, or ragdoll immediately if they collide with an object.
@@kyledodson2992 I thought that too about it being a cash grab. I had just bought the first one a few months earlier when the 2nd was announced. I need to go back to the game, does it still have a good player base ? I hear It's better than Back 4 Blood.

@@kyledodson2992 L4D2 still has some of the most satisfying gore in gaming, which really wasn't met in my eyes until Doom 4 and Eternal. There's just an intense, visceral satisfaction to tossing a pipe bomb and watching chunks of zambos flying 30 feet back in every direction, or unloading the m60 at an incoming horde and carving holes in zombie chests that make them look like they're in that scene from Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.
I’ve never been really that opposed to seeing older games with updated graphics, but I find remaking this game to be kind of an odd decision. It just feels kinda random if that makes sense. I really like the original and I’ve played through it tons of times so I’m curious as to how this remake turns out
I can see why they'd re-release it. Its perfect for the switch imo. If I had any friends or a girlfriend to play this with I'd totally get it lol. Not a lot of arcade style rail shooters left. This seems like the perfect game to have a couple brews with your buddies and mindlessly shoot zombies. This is coming from someone who loved the games in the arcade too. I can deal with the shiny graphics.
id say its because this game has never been ported to newer consoles outside of its release back on the saturn where as HotD2 and 3 n 4 have been ported to the ps3 wii and wiiu and overkill as well. Fans have been asking for this game to either be ported to newer consoles or just remade and so they remade it, personally i think considering all things im just happy it got put out on a modern console yes issues are there but its cheap and was made with love as you can see by the shot for shots in the game as well as keeping the campy shit va'ing. The Music im sure was a licensing issue thing but if this gets ported to pc people will fix that easily. The controls and wierd issues with hit boxes can be patched. im enjoying it for what it is.
By his own admission in this video, he rarely plays Switch. I also don't recall Sega ever sponsoring him. So I think as long as he doesn't piss off Steel Series he's ok. 👌
They are already making House of the Dead 2 Remake after the first one developers confirmed it. As for the music not sure if it's true or not but supposedly Sega wouldn't let them use the music from the original game for some odd reason which is what resulted from the music we hear in the remake. But still a neat review though.
*Reads title* Well, considering most House of the Dead games are considered Abandonware on PC. Yes, we really needed this. Also, the devs already confirmed House of the Dead 2 is gonna get a remake.
Abandonware games are basically the top of my wishlist, especially that of the PS2 and arcades. Now Klonoa and House of the Dead coming back? Yes, however remasters would also be pretty rad with seeing just as it was back then rather than new graphics and whatnot.
@@Damian_1989 What's conflicting about emulation and pirating for me was how there seems to be no limits or rules as already available games, especially from Indie devs, can be so easily downloaded. Emulating an obscure or well known game that hasn't been on sale for decades? It's relatively fine, I think. But once said game is on sale, whether as a remaster or a remake, I felt like owing to them for making a game I wanted for so long to arrive at last.
For me this remake is just "all right" at the best of times. The fact that this game has performance issues with the graphical fidelity it has is just mind-blowing. The bloom lighting and lens flares are complete overkill, possibly to hide the blurry texture work. Even as a budget title I expected better after the Panzer Dragoon remake.
Gotta agree, also there's nothing more satisfying that Sophie gettin' bitch-slapped by the first boss and little me going "u bastard!" cocking the light gun and getting pumped. Good times, man.
Did we really need this? Yes yes so much YES! Although this isn’t the best product ever it does 2 very important things! 1. This game hasn’t had any re-release since the SEGA Saturn. Sure we can just use an emulator today but there is something sad about not playing an official version with no hassle. 2. Rail shooters are hardly made nowadays, almost all games feels “similar”. Open World, RPG you know the rest. Taking a look back at the past is certainly nice from time to time. Overall I’m happy this exists. Although they killed the Magician fight, at least most encounters are similar to the original game (saving civilians and basic enemy placements) despite not having the source code, this game deserves a thumbs up, just not a gold medal.
I really never understand people who bitch about something existing. A perfect example of spazzy net-nerds who actually rationalize the idea that something *not* existing makes their world a better place.. as if their lives are impacted by a product they are free not to buy. Classic internet bitching mentality of babies throwing a tantrum over nothing. Even in this video the guy talks about how he wasn't even a fan of the original.. Noooo don't make that, I feel better if it doesn't exist! Fuck outta here "mate"
They disgraced every aspect that was essential to the light-gun shooter. This is not what anyone needed; this has actually damaged the appeal of the genre for new audiences because they'll think this garbage is representative, and they won't see the craftsmanship of the originals. It also provides the worst example for new games in the 'genre' (they basically replaced the essentials of the actual genre with yet another set of copy-paste generic lighting and physics implementations which go against the very nature of the genre's tailored experience)
Emulators truly are the shit, I've been on a light gun binge with rail shooters recently. Time Crisis, Let's go jungle, house of the dead, carnevil, virtua cop, etc. Its cool how you can get most of these on your pc for free
DUDE I thought i was the only person who remembered let's go jungle! I remember the cabinet I played at a chuck-e-cheese was corrupted a bit and during a cutscene one of the characters had a pinocchio nose lmao. Those giant spiders also scared the crap out of me as a kid...
So to get a light gun to work with an emulator you would still need a CRT television right ? I remember reading about a light gun that is being made for modern monitors that works OK. I would want to go back and play games like Jurassic park.
@@Gatorade69 I've been playing original House of the Dead on my PC with a wii-mote and with a pistol grip and a Dolphin Bar, which is a wii sensor bar that connects to the PC with USB and then reads the wii-mote as a mouse so any lightgun games with mouse support work pretty well. It's far from perfect but surprisingly effective. Another thing you should look into is the Sinden lightgun.
I maintain that playing the house of the dead games on the PS3 with the move controllers is a great way to play a lot of these games, and I go back to them often.
My understanding is that the original source code was lost when sega and the AM2 team moved to a new studio, so for accessibility sake I think this was necessary. Anecdotally, I’ve been having a blast with this remake, but I do agree with you about the controls and the feeling of it being a fake game. I think it was really odd to choose the switch of all consoles to bring this game to. Also, can we talk about how goofy the music sounds compared to the original? Still, I couldn’t help but smile ear to ear when I finally got to see the revamped Magician. I really do hope they remake the second game.
I mean, after the whole video i feel...yeah "why we need this?" And is not because "accessibility"(i want games in their original form and i support that) Is just the game is soo bad and shitty, they could do better Yeah bro, i was thinking the same, WHY THE MUSIC IS SOO GOOfY? It sound like a parody and that is strange since the original game wasn't that goofy overall! Damm, this game makes gyro aiming feel like being stumbled in the trash, common why is so bad
I mean unless the ps5 or xbox has added motion controls the switch is the only console can actually "emulate" light gun play. Unless this becomes a vr game.
@@panuru9175 easy chief, the op said they like the game, and I don’t certainly don’t think it’s as bad as you’re crying about. Do I think it need fixes, absolutely, but it’s not Security Breach, so chill…
@@kingrobotnik6950 Bro Security Breach was fine for me on launch besides the Vanessa being rare thing. And most of the bugs are fixed now anyway. Don't shit on an indie studio's first game that was better than anything you could do with all of Bethesda at your helm lol.
Clearing up some stuff: This game wasn't pawned off, the dev asked SEGA to make this, not SEGA threw this at them for cashgrab. They lost the source code for 1 so they HAD to remake the entire thing 2 was announced at the same time so it's on the pipeline other than that, i'm not gonna comment on criticisms of art design, controls, or features cause...I got a lot myself. I can't fault anyone for not knowing these things cause I was the weirdo looking stuff up on this game like every other month since it was announced in late 2019
Can't unsee the "spent ammo" in the bottom of the screen for both players isn't actually spent when its fired. The tips of the bullets (the projectiles) are still in the case as they fly off.
I laughed so hard when Chariot appeared and he was the size of a normal person, then I felt dead inside..one of my favourite first boss fights absolutely ruined.
Honestly, I love the ragdolls that they've added to this game. Seeing their bodies colliding with the background and reacting to my shots while their limbs explode triggers the dopamine in my brain.
Honestly the Original source is gone so I don't think there's any way to for it to be released in its purest form and would've benefitted from being released into other platforms
@@TurboNutterBastard That would mean having to go to the Original Creators of the IP and would probably cost more so I doubt they have enough resources to recreate an 20 yr old source code for outdated platforms of what would be an Unknown engine
@@TurboNutterBastard But this is SEGA we're talking about, no? It's a miracle anything House of the Dead related exists at all. Getting them to reverse engineer the original, first game would be IDEAL, but based on SEGA's previous track record with their older franchises, it is not likely that they would do something like that.
@@Orange_Swirl To be fair, it's a case of cost and return. House of the Dead is a rather niche franchise of Sega's, if they spent the money to reverse engineer the first game completely, there's no way they would have actually made a profit. Best case scenario would be to break even, but more likely would be a net negative. Remaking it was the better move overall.
They actually are remaking House of the Dead 2. I hope they can improve upon the problems this remake had. I am a die-hard House of the Dead fan and I still honestly had fun with this remake and thought the team behind it did the best job they could having to redo everything from the ground up considering the original source code was lost... I don't know if it's because I've been wanting a new iteration/port of the first game for so long but despite the shortcomings I found myself itching to go back and play it. There's a good game in there for sure but it's held back by the limitations of the Switch. I wish Forever Entertainment and Megapixel Studios didn't have that exclusivity deal with Nintendo to release their games on Switch first because this game really NEEDS something like the PS Move. There's actually been a listing spotted for it in the PS Store so we may be getting a PS4 port soon, but that should've been the console it launched on from the start, or even PC so the graphics wouldn't be so muddy. Or hell, Nintendo should've made a Zapper accessory or something utilizing an IR sensor bar like the Wiimote did because gyro controls are just not the way to play it. I don't think it's a problem with this game as I hear even Switch games with good gyro pointer controls experience drift... it's just not cut out for games where you point at stuff. At the end of the day, I do wish this remake could be better, but honestly I feel like it at least launched in a decent state. Perhaps once they patch it and put it on better optimized consoles it will hopefully iron out the issues. It doesn't surpass the original House of the Dead, which is a game I have a lot of sentimental value towards since I grew up playing it and it sparked my love for arcades and video games... but I'm glad we at least have a new iteration of it on modern consoles. It may not be the game we grew up playing but it's still a fun time... in my opinion, of course.
Really hope they bring these to PC at some point. The Sinden and Gun4IR guns have their limitations but they work far better than even the move controller.
@@Vortal_Cord There was some findings about how the remake is possibly coming to PS4. So it could be a similar case to Panzer Dragoon where it is a timed Switch exclusive before releasing to other consoles.
So just a few things to mention: They basically had to remake the original from the ground up because some doofus lost the source code for the game. The music had to be redone for licensing issues I guess, which really sucks because the original music was better. They couldn’t even do a remix or reimagining of the original it seems. One positive aspect though is that they ARE redoing 2 AND they do have the source code for that game still. Hopefully having access to 2’s source code not only means that game will be faithful to the original, but maybe they can even take a look at some of the stuff they got wrong in their remake of 1 and fix it. Also agree that the preset animations are definitely the way to go. Preset animations will always look better than ones lazily done in a physics engine without any additional polish added on top. It’s a big reason why some of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice animations look a little strange- and then you have stuff like Guilty Gear whose animations are top notch because that company hand makes every frame of animation. I also have to say that “the whole thing looks like it’s shiny and covered in baby oil” is a trend I’ve seen modern games taking more and more for some reason. So many games end up looking shiny, wet, and like everything is made of plastic.
Over the years you’ve never steered me wrong. I just bought Tiny Tina’s Wonderland for my Series X and it’s definitely a great time. I can think of at least a dozen games where when I first debated getting it I checked if you did a review first and if you did it was definitely a major factor in my decision to grab it or not. Keep up the great work man
I think my biggest problem with this remake is that it's on the Switch and you're using a joystick to aim and it just feels weird. Like I'm committing some sin by not having a mouse or a light gun to aim. Something about just aiming with a stick on the switch feels off
Yeah it also on PC stream of House of the Dead remake the loading times is awful look at Matt aka the What Happened guy. He did the House of the Dead remake and the loading times is close to Sonic 06 and Mighty No 9 Wii U version of loading.
Watching this review resurrected memories of when I struggled greatly to complete even one level of the original House of the Dead, only to give my parents a go on the arcade machine and watch in ave how they effortlessly got to the final boss without wasting a single coin. My lil inner gamer was really humbled that day.
Ngl, I love ragdoll death animations. I got tired of the set animated ones with military shooters, seeing the same thing over and over. Much more satisfying to blow someone across a room with a nade or shotgun
Agreed. Ragdoll is great! Death animations can be cool like Soldier of Fortune 1 lol, but I always have more fun with ragdoll. Part of why i keep playing Rainbow Six Vegas 2 😅
Same! I burst out laughing after I got the assault rifle and just unloaded my entire clip on a single zombie, just watching him fly off into the damn stratosphere. Ragdolls are so much fun to play with.
Me and my friend once saw the house of the dead 2 in an arcade within our local cinema so while waiting for our film to start we decided to play it. Ended up missing our film as we got further than ever before and we couldn't stop just to see how far we got!
I saw this two days ago on the Switch store and was just thinking, how did this release without me seeing a single channel talk about it, didn't see any hype, nothing. I did think it was pretty cool they did release it though and was pretty happy when I saw it. I was thinking you'd do a video on it considering you've reviewed the entire series before. Can't wait to see how they did.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 yup I saw the same video and I don't think he mentioned anything about calibration issues plus he gave a largely positive review about this game.
I'm interested if it hits PC, but it definitely feels like a strange release. Not necessarily in a bad way, just strange. Really, I just want a definitive package of every HOTD game to date. They could call it the "Protect The Larfcycle Edition".
Fun fact: 4 year old me was left unattended in an arcade and I watched 2 teens play house of the dead. I later had nightmares and an irrational fear of zombies which I cured playing Left 4 Dead at 13 years old
To answer the title, yes, it was needed. There are many fans of Thotd 1, including me. The thing that happened was like Silent Hill 2, the source code of the original game had gotten lost. 2 & 3 had plenty of ports that makes them more widely accessible compared to the original, which again many people still like. It doesn’t matter you’d argue 2 is the best and why it wasn’t remade as well, 1 did need it the most. The result is pretty subpar though
The first half of this review seems rather misinformed. HotD2 has been ported too many times to count but as you mentioned there are no true proper ports of HotD1. This is because Sega lost their original source code back in the 90's and can no longer port the first game. HoTD1 really needed a proper solution and this was it. I would of been rather disappointed if they started with HotD2 as the first remake; we don't need the 9millionth port of that.
I think the best the series may have got with home releases was House of the Dead II and III Returns for the Wii. Playing it by aiming with the Wii remote was pretty fun for me (granted my Wii remote never had calibration issues) and it included a couple of bonus modes and things, while keeping the original games 100% intact as far as I'm aware
I have both HotD II & III Returns and Overkill on the Wii. Such fun games! It’s such a shame that this remake didn’t get given the same care when being ported to the Switch as compared to the Wii titles.
On a family holiday abroad when I was 12 or 13, the hotel we stayed at had a House of The Dead arcade machine in the lobby. Eventually I solo'd the whole thing....thanks to my patient step dad who kept giving me money to put in the machine. Was pretty cool, a decent crowd formed to watch a vidya game nerd finish House of The Dead in one session. Fond memories.
Only thing at this point that would improve upon the quality of these videos would be if Gman uploaded in 4K. Would be more fun for us folks watching on tvs or 4K displays.
I thought the controls were awful too for a while. The default settings are not great in my opinion. Turn off aim assist and set the deadzone to something like 2.5. I'm not even sure what the deadzone means in this game but it made a difference. I rarely have to recalibrate now. Also set the opacity to 1.0 and turn off rumble. I found it much more playable. Why those options are not default - I don't know.
@@Gatorade69 I know; I was just asking his opinion on which he was using and which is best. Or your opinion if you’ve played it yet? I might scoop it up.
Just wait for the PC release, just like their Panzer Dragoon remake, it started out as a not so great Switch release but became a really great PC release, they already have plans on making the 2nd games of both series, it's probably a good idea to start with the simpler originals and learn from that for the more fleshed out sequels. Why they start out on an underpowered console however? no idea...
My mother ran a Timezone arcade from 1990-2001. I used to leave school and get on a bus to BoxHill and just play LightGun games and Daytona all afternoon until we closed. Before these got released on console ect. I swear i was the only person i knew who had even seen the end of these games. P.s. Time Crisis. Virtua Cop. Poink Blank. H.O.T.D. are peak childhood for me
I really don't understand the surprisse about the gyro drift, what result were you expecting? A gyroscope is always going to drift, specially if you're flailing it around quickly. They should have just used the left joycon which has an IR sensor and can more or less operate as a Wiimote as long as you have an IR point of reference, which the screen of the Switch can act as since it doesn't have an IR filter film.
I have fond memories of playing this game at the mini arcade at our local movie theater in 10 to 15 minute bites before the movie we went to see started. I spent plenty of my parents quarters meant for snacks on this game (we bought cheaper snacks at the convenience store and snuck them in). Good times.
Having grown up with the original game never even being able to finish it I like this remake just why only for the switch but it keeps the vibe and gives it new graphics I like the mistake spelling...but the old graphic are creepier
The original code for hotd 1 was lost. Hence why we don't see it on other consoles or pc besides the initial port, and why this remake was built from the ground up.
As you’ve already mentioned, a Time Crisis series remaster/remake would be awesome but would it sell and would a gun controller be released for it? I reckon after the disastrous Gun-con 3 there would be a lot of discouragement.
@@sirchezdreammachine5112 Maybe I wasn’t being completely fair but as someone who owned all three, The Gun-con 3 I felt was weird with a joypad thing jutting out the side like some kind of tumor. I think if they had stuck more in line with the Gun-con 2 design it would have been great.
With the PC port, you can mod the game to have original sounds and music. Man I missed hearing G's original gunshot sound that was taken from Virtua Cop 1.
I’m not saying The House of the Dead is some beloved masterpiece everyone knows but I knew this remake was suspect when they announced it in a sizzle reel for Nintendo for like 10 seconds. They then released a 1 minute trailer like a month before it released. It just screamed cash grab that Sega did their best to hide after realizing what it was.
Yep, that fact that hardly any promotional fanfare was a sure-fire sign that Sega knew they were putting out garbage. The fact it was around £22 (in the UK) for a brand new Switch game was also a good indicator that Sega knew this remake was dogshit but punted it out anyway. Scary thing is that even though it is a light gun game and you can't fucking shoot at things, yet people are trying to justify to themselves it's a good game, means that Sega will probably pull this kind of shit even more often.
The issue with the calibration is with the Switch itself. Honestly, the issue was there for the Wii as well if you didn't use the Wiimote Bar (Yes, surprisingly, that was possible). To solve the calibration issues with the Switch, there really needs to be a Joy-Con bar.
I'm probably one of the most hardcore HOTD fans you'll find out there, with HOTD 1 being a big part of my childhood (my favorite in the series! Something about going around a creepy mansion is fun to me.) But seeing this remade just felt odd, previous ports like the Wii included HOTD 2-3 plus some small other modes. It was definitely something a bit more meaty than what this is. As much as I love the games individually, 1,2,3,4 each sorta need to be bundled with another for a 30 buck release, as most of those can be cleared in 20-30 mins tops. Overkill had more stages and features and felt like a full game (though the final boss was sorta weak compared to the others.) I sorta hoped that this game would have been bundled with HOTD Scarlet dawn, the newest game in the series which wraps up most of the story, but sadly that's still only at arcades, and sadly none near me. Also, yeah, I'm that guy that still likes the old HOTD 1 visuals! As I kid they impressed me even only watching the demo over and over in a restaurant game room since my parents forbid me to play it. So I'd just pretend to be fighting zombies with a nerf gun at home.
I remember going to an arcade to play DDR in like..2004 and this girl i was friends with was outside crying. Apparently, her boyfriend had a seizure and had to be taken to the hospital after playing House of the Dead. I never realized how much lightgun games from that era flashed the screen until that moment, lol. Wild times. I'm happy this remake exists, but wish it was a bit more content and better overall. I'm kind of hoping it gets a VR port with motion controls one day
Look at some of the comments here, some people really enjoy it. Look at SegaLord X's review who enjoyed it. It seems to be decisive. It is almost a 1 to 1 remake. I would hold out as I hear It's coming to some other systems. The biggest problem is the gyro aiming but some people aren't having any problems. Personally I think it would be fun in VR or with the PS Move.
The reason why the PC port "lacked music" is because it was one of those good old games where they had the music on disc...that you could also play as an audio CD, like Tomb Raider 2, Quake and Quake 2, Shadow Warrior, Blood etc.
Artstyle > Graphics Always sad that a great game like House of the Dead got lazy remakes and the devs didn't even know they're doing Guess remakes are making game companies lazier. Why make original games when you can make easy money with remakes?
It was necessary for them to remake this instead of a remaster or a simple re-release because Sega notoriously lost the original source code years ago. That's why they had that odd HoTD 2+3 bundle on the Wii instead of all three games or simply the first two. All of the HoTD games have been released on several consoles except the original and that's why.
When i read the flashing lights warning at the start i expected flashing lights that would be harmful to epileptics, but these flashes were so strong and frequent i was afraid i'd get a seizure too and im not epileptic lol
I love gman reviews, but I strongly disagree. Firstly, these guys aren't remaking 90s 3d Sega games as a quick cash grab. Maximilian Dood, did an excellent review for the remake from a HOTD fan POV.
@@Gggmanlives I don't doubt you're a fan. But like anything there's varying degrees of Fandom. But I think im a little more lenient because I know this remake wouldn't exist without MegaPixel. As with basically all of Segas 90s games, the source code is gone... Sega outside of doing rom dumps of their 2D era games have done nothing with their 3D classics, or are even bothering to release new installments of their classic franchises. Streets of Rage 4, Panzeer Dragoon, House of the Dead, and Alex the Kid were all developed and published without Sega. If it weren't for the small studios madeup of fans of these great Sega franchises, we wouldn't be getting anything from these classic franchises. So I'm willing to overlook some rough edges but I do have my limits. And my apologies for this comment basically turning into a blog post.
@@thejag4161 Mate, I'm an OG HOTD fan from back in the day, and I'd rather this remake didn't exist. I'm also fed up with people trying to justify shitty developers pumping out shitty games. If Megapixel truly gave a fuck about HOTD, they wouldn't have fucked it up this badly. Stanning and simping for shitty developers just means that they and publishers know they can pump out any crap as they know people will pay for garbage, just like this remake.
The original had so much charm to it. Ran super smooth, great reaction times to what you were shooting were pretty spot on. The color scheme was great, the bullets looked sick. Graphics for the time were pretty awesome, one of my favorite arcade games for sure. Was able to beat it with a buck usually (when a quarter was per play the good ole days).
05:22 Just additional note. Getting damaged can also change your routes. There are some muscular guys bull rushing towards you at some points, if you get damaged by these guys, you'll get a cutscene that will reveal that you are standing behind a ledge and you get pushed off and be forced to take a detour.
imo every arcade game port should do what mars matrix (dreamcast) did, you have to accumulate score to unlock extra credits, bonus content, videos of perfect runs so players can learn how to play optimally, free play on an arcade game will make people play it for 30 minutes, but going for a 1 credit clear will make people play for hours
I'm pretty sure these outsourced remakes of Saturn era games were done for 3 possible reasons. - Lost source code (Why Panzer Dragoon was remade and not ported) -Remake was easier to make than reverse engineering original master - Emulation offered a lesser product (see also Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute) I'd say wait until it comes to other platforms with 60fps and bug fixes like when they massively improved Panzer Dragoon for it's multiplat release. This one really needed to be collection with a remade HOTD 1 and a port of 2-4, Overkill and Scarlet Dawn for $60 though.
I know this video is a year old, and not sure if anyone said this yet, but the reason they chose to remake thotd is because they had no choice. The original source code for thotd was lost, which is why there were never any substantial ports created. Hopefully thotd 2 remake will be better since they'll have the source code to go off of.
Sad thing is that they left out a cool Switch feature: one of the controlers has a IR sensor, they could have easily added a border around the game with some sort of corner detection to aim.. but nooooo... they had to use the gyros for aiming..

There's a patch to the Model 2 Version by egregiousguy that disables flashing when firing. It's a lua file on the Model 2 Emulator itself.
It's strange, it's fine if I'm playing as I expect it but the flashing in a video obviously isn't controlled by me so it has this weird effect, not quite a headache, not quite motion sickness, but it's some weird inbetween.

Remake not a remaster.

"Pre-set death animations are always gonna be better than just some crappy physics system applied to something and calling it a day."
I agree and disagree with this, pre set animations can be both worse and better than just ragdolls... it all depends on the animations being smooth, and not being in a place where they'll clip into objects, but the best system is combining the two. Combining the two is what gives you the visceral satisfaction in games like L4D2, where you're fighting off hoards of zombies, and when the zombies are killed, they stumble for a few steps before ragdolling to the ground, or ragdoll immediately if they collide with an object.
Definitely agree. Plus some of those physics deaths can be pretty funny or cool.

I’ve never been really that opposed to seeing older games with updated graphics, but I find remaking this game to be kind of an odd decision. It just feels kinda random if that makes sense.
What's conflicting about emulation and pirating for me was how there seems to be no limits or rules as already available games, especially from Indie devs, can be so easily downloaded.
Exactly

Point Blank was another great light gun game. But they're just not the same without a light gun controller, imho.

Well the plan was to have the cheesy voice acting
These type of arcade shooter games is only fun when you do get to hold a plastic light gun instead of.. say a controller or mouse.
So just a few things to mention:
They basically had to remake the original from the ground up because some doofus lost the source code for the game.
Something about just aiming with a stick on the switch feels off
You can use gyroscope aim in settings

@@juststatedtheobvious9633 yup I saw the same video and I don't think he mentioned anything about calibration issues plus he gave a largely positive review about this game.
The main problem I see is the enemies blend in to the background and almost disappear where the originals pop out very nicely.
It makes typing with the keyboard all the more precise way to aim, than using a controller trying to replace the light gun

Used to go to the arcade and play House of the Dead 2 on the Dreamcast. Good memories.
How does that make the entire first half "misinformed"?
I think the best the series may have got with home releases was House of the Dead II and III Returns for the Wii. Playing it by aiming with the Wii remote was pretty fun for me (granted my Wii remote never had calibration issues) and it included a couple of bonus modes and things, while keeping the original games 100% intact as far as I'm aware
Theyre better on the xbox with a light gun
I still have House of the Dead Overkill on PS3 and it's awesome, despite the PS move calibration issues. This seems like a real missed opportunity.
It sucks it see that the gyro controls are done poorly, it's one of my favorite features in anything that requires aiming.
Are you playing it with regular controls or with the motion aiming? Which is better for this game?
@@RFNY315 You can have both. There's options for gyro aiming, thumbstick aiming or a. Mixture of both.
@@Gatorade69 I know; I was just asking his opinion on which he was using and which is best. Or your opinion if you’ve played it yet? I might scoop it up.
@@RFNY315 No I haven't played it but will probably scoop it up when it comes to PS4. Supposedly It's leaked It's coming to other systems.
@@Gatorade69 most likely will be yeah. Doesn’t look bad imo
Just wait for the PC release, just like their Panzer Dragoon remake, it started out as a not so great Switch release but became a really great PC release, they already have plans on making the 2nd games of both series, it's probably a good idea to start with the simpler originals and learn from that for the more fleshed out sequels.
Why they start out on an underpowered console however? no idea...
I hope they learn from this and remaster the 2nd one and it's a fucking blast
My mother ran a Timezone arcade from 1990-2001.
I used to leave school and get on a bus to BoxHill and just play LightGun games and Daytona all afternoon until we closed.
Before these got released on console ect. I swear i was the only person i knew who had even seen the end of these games.
P.s. Time Crisis. Virtua Cop. Poink Blank. H.O.T.D. are peak childhood for me
i was really looking forward to this game, i did enjoy playing it on the switch but really wish the music was better
When you complained about the ragdoll, I said to myself out loud, "yeah preset animations are better." then you reaffirmed me straight away lol
Yeah most of the new animations in this game just lack personality, the ragdolls especially.
Damn, Gman really tore this one to shreds. I've been having a great time with it, can't wait for HotD 2
@12:24 I love the Taxi Driver nod, I see what you did there, & I like it!
VR is growing in popularity each and every year. Such a missed opportunity to not release this on SteamVR/oculus.
This series deserves more attention in the modern age and I hope this is a big step towards that.
Been playing this all weekend, with the controller. Having a lot of fun, looking forward to buying the next game in the series.
I owned a guncon 3 when time crisis first came to PS3 in the bundle with the singles you hung on the tv it was a pain but it still worked amazing
I feel ya, I always stared at the arcade cabinet in hotels and such but it was always a forbidden fruit. Haven’t played the game to this day.
I'm kind of hoping it gets a VR port with motion controls one day
I was hoping you’d cover this. Needed a solid review before i considered buying. This franchise is close to my heart.
Friends of the ams,
You cannot stop the loife cycle!
Absolutely LOVED Gumshoe on the NES, and remember Crossbow from the arcade at the mall in the 80's!
It doesn't look bad.
It’s mid
Man that dark humor just earned a sub 😂
Shame they didn’t keep the cheesy but creepy aesthetic of the original.
The reason why the PC port "lacked music" is because it was one of those good old games where they had the music on disc...that you could also play as an audio CD, like Tomb Raider 2, Quake and Quake 2, Shadow Warrior, Blood etc.
Artstyle > Graphics
Always sad that a great game like House of the Dead got lazy remakes and the devs didn't even know they're doing
Guess remakes are making game companies lazier. Why make original games when you can make easy money with remakes?
Its astonishing how light-gun techonology STILL feels better than even the best gyro sensors, huh.
Your 36 year old manchild rants don't need a content warning, Sonny Jim, they're what the fanbase fully expects and embraces.
Lmao, manchild rants
agree 100, keep up the good stuff Gman!
There’s also a small glitch I’ve noticed where if you have assist mode on, the cursor can auto aim onto a scientist making it extremely annoying.
4 was only released on ps3
When i read the flashing lights warning at the start i expected flashing lights that would be harmful to epileptics, but these flashes were so strong and frequent i was afraid i'd get a seizure too and im not epileptic lol
I love gman reviews, but I strongly disagree. Firstly, these guys aren't remaking 90s 3d Sega games as a quick cash grab. Maximilian Dood, did an excellent review for the remake from a HOTD fan POV.
I'm a HOTD fan, lol.
@@Gggmanlives kinda doubtful after this review tbh. Have you tried calibrating your gyro? Coz it's PERFECT on mine after 15 seconds of calibration.
I said in the video that I did that.
There are some muscular guys bull rushing towards you at some points, if you get damaged by these guys,
you'll get a cutscene that will reveal that you are standing behind a ledge and you get pushed off and be forced to take a detour.
imo every arcade game port should do what mars matrix (dreamcast) did, you have to accumulate score to unlock extra credits, bonus content, videos of perfect runs so players can learn how to play optimally, free play on an arcade game will make people play it for 30 minutes, but going for a 1 credit clear will make people play for hours
Even though I don't have VR, I still think it may be a better idea to remake HotD in VR.
I'm pretty sure these outsourced remakes of Saturn era games were done for 3 possible reasons.
- Lost source code (Why Panzer Dragoon was remade and not ported)
-Remake was easier to make than reverse engineering original master
- Emulation offered a lesser product (see also Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute)
I'd say wait until it comes to other platforms with 60fps and bug fixes like when they massively improved Panzer Dragoon for it's multiplat release.
Would have much preferred a HD remaster with something like the Dreamcast HOTD 2 ‘original’ mode. I want a good port of this game godammit!
I'm sorry the flashing lights were a little too much for me
I just going to assume people are going to say the graphics of the original is part of ‘THE CHARM’
'At this point it makes you wonder why they didnt just release this on PC'.....oh my sweet summer child.
Sad thing is that they left out a cool Switch feature: one of the controlers has a IR sensor, they could have easily added a border around the game with some sort of corner detection to aim.. but nooooo... they had to use the gyros for aiming..
I bought House of the Dead overkill on Wii and it came with two gun accessories for the wii-motes. At least it feels like a proper light-gun game
Fun fact:
On emulator you can actually mod out the flashing by putting a script in the emulator files.
The model 2 emulator to be specific
Anybody else still duelwielding both guns as an adult whenever you come across one of these cabinets? All the kids looking at you like a god never gets old.
The Australian Digital version is sitting at $22-25 USD (Had to double check with an Aussie friend)
Only the limited release physical version is $50.
