I'm a native of Vista, born in Escondido, one of the first births at the old Palomar Hospital, in 1950. My grandfather, John Slivkoff, was considered a town pioneer. He transported the first printing press in a horse-drawn wagon from Escondido as a favor for Sam Randsburg, publisher of the late Vista Press, and for that favor was awarded a lifetime free subscription to the newspaper. My grandfather lived for nearly 60 years at the end of San Clemente Ave. at the base of the San Marcos Hills where he grew avocadoes and limes, and was also a friend of fellow pioneers Jules Delpy and Abe Shelhoup, a downtown merchant. I well remember many hours spent at Saturday afternoon movie matinees at the Avo Theater, and my father did his banking at the First National Bank pictured in this feature. Vista was a wonderful place to grow up and to live, but sad to say, I don't think I wish to ever go back. it was a different time, and a different place.
