2016 Acura TLX Review | Underrated is an Understatement

  • I got the chance to review a 2016 Acura TLX 2.4l Base and this is a CPO car with 26,000 miles on it. This 2016 Acura TLX has held up great but more importantly, it drives great too. The TLX has always been an underrated car in the Luxury segment and Acura as a whole is typically overlooked, besides their SUVs. But I believe the TLX does deserve a look in the luxury sport category.

    Had a 16' TLX 2.4 . Put 30k miles on it during the 3 year lease. Traded for a 19' TLX 2.4 and have 8k miles on it currently. Reliable, tech packed, fuel efficient, and quiet. Excellent cars all around.

    I gotta say this older TLX still holds its own. That Honda 2.4L VTEC 4-cylinder still sounds amazing, it’s got an amazing torque-converted 8-speed dual clutch, and it’s still very nice to drive. Wish that this 4-cylinder had SH-AWD, but Honda and Acura definitely made this car more premium than the Accord for that time. Just wish the V6 model had the dual clutch rather than ZF’s 9-speed which is still not a bad transmission. But overall, people discredit Acura for not being that extreme tier luxury brand, but honestly, their value with the amount of standard equipment is unbeatable and it’s hard to get that with most luxury brands nowadays. The Japanese luxury brands definitely have a different approach when it comes to luxury compared to their European competitors. The Germans really have that top tier luxury focus with the features and the optional extras that most luxury buyers will spend the extra money for. But the Japanese luxury brands focus a lot of value and bang for your buck, and I think that's great for someone who wants a luxury car, but you will get more standard equipment included at no charge, which is excellent.

    • @MysterANT
      @MysterANT Год назад +1

      I wanted to turbo my 2.4 TLX but that's the problem and why they couldn't use the dual clutch with the v6 because it wouldn't be able to handle the torque from the J35

    Good review. For my next car (which remains a fantasy, as I can't make any move automotively now), I'm undecided between a really nice sedan or a really nice SUV. Although I was aware of this car, it wasn't really one of those I was considering. Now it is. Frankly, I'd love to own the individual car you are reviewing, or one very much like it--good driving feel without the excess that hormone-driven teenagers seek, lovely interior, comfortable as both a daily driver and a road trip car, and both backup camera and satellite radio. And Bluetooth. As a middle-aged car guy, I find this a great combination.

    I definitely think upgrading to the Tech package is worth it especially for the Lane Keep Assist. In the end, it's a tricked out Accord. I get consistently 33 - 40 (hypermiling) mpg on the highway. The city is more like 19 - 23. What makes this vehicle so great is it's 8 speed dual clutch transmission which shifts crisp and is satisfying. The PAWS is great for driving around town at slow speeds, but at highway speeds the 'precision' isn't so precise. If you want performance you would have to move to the the V6 SH-AWD.
    The V6 is great. The transmission? Not so much.
    Thanks for posting. I really enjoy mine, my 3rd Acura.

      The way that Honda and Acura tune the ZF 9-speed is certainly better than the way FCA did it in some of their products. Idk how FCA tuned it but the gearing was too long, and felt like 4 speed autos. Honda and Acura tuned it much better, but definitely not the best transmission. I mean, ZF’s own 8-speed automatic is a much better transmission.

    I drove a ILX and TLX in 2016 and was extremely underwhelmed. The steering was the most numb video-game steering I've ever experienced in my life -- super terrible. Suspension felt way too soft for a "sport sedan", IMO, and the 9 speed transmissions were terrible. If I was cruising on the freeway, and floored, it it took an eternity to jump gears -- like ultra, ultra, ultra horrible. Totally unacceptable -- the ILX and TLX were both like that. And they both felt too slow to be included in the luxury car segment, IMO. I took a couple older TL cars for a drive (like 2012 ish) and I was MUCH more impressed with the, suspension, driving behavior, and transmission response - I came really close to getting one of those. I thought the TL was a much better car, overall, compared to the newer models. Just my two cents. = )

      Yea I agree with you the older Acura was definitely better to drive and older Honda’s in general just had a feel that almost rivaled BMW but they’ve softened up.
      Despite that I still appreciate how these cars feel they feel natural and to me, I think it was designed extremely well for street driving. The previous Acura TSX for instance was just a bit too harsh.
      Have you tried the V6? I think you will really like that. Thanks again for stopping by my friend I always love to hear what others have to say about the cars I review as well.

It’s so much fun to drive I try and find excuses to leave the house hahah. I’ll have for 2-3 years and get a new a-spec when they upgrade the interior. That’s the only negative is the interior is a bit dated.

    I did drive this Acura with the 2.4L and 8-Speed DCT combo and loved it. Not the fastest, but definitely not slow. The drive-train allows this car to get out of its own way and keep up with traffic with ease. I really wish Honda/Acura didn’t get rid of the wonderful 8-speed DCT.

    This OG wants to see a mid 2000's Lexus IS 250 and the GS 350 rwd vs awd and the comparison between the F Sport models vs base models. The good the bad and the ugly on everything these models have. I would love to see a video on these vehicles. I'm in the market for something toyota or honda most likely a used model with low miles. Something I can enjoy for the next 15-20 yrs and drive it for the rest of that vehicles life. I still have my 02 accord coupe and only 124,000 miles on it. It held up great these past 19 yrs. And allowed me to build up my savings where I was able to drive other cars which I always sold after I got the joy of driving those cars out of my system before the maintenance bills got to expensive 😂.so now it's time for a new ride to replace my old trusty accord. I'm going to give my nephew my old accord which looks almost new and has plenty of life in it and is expertly maintained. That day will be a sad day for me because I know the car will not be treated as I treated it 😭

    Every review I have read say the 4cyl car is a better balanced car, than the V6, and the 8spd dct, is superior to the 9spd auto in the V6 model. I have never really been a fan of the TLX exterior style. The mmc changed it for the better though, since it got rid of that hideous grill, and the A-spec looks especially good. The RLX is also an extremely underated car as well, especially the hybrid version. They are a really good preowned buy as well.

    Thinking about TLX but I still like my 09 TSX. I'm starting to get a small noise of the VTC issue during cold start on my car. I don't have any oil consumption issue but do you think it will be next? I baby my car and only hit VTEC like 2 or 3 times a month.

      Yea so the VTC actuator is going out on your car. Depending on mileage and whether or not you have a warranty, I would get rid of the TSX if I were you. TLX isn’t perfect but you can get them CPO for like 20k and it’s a phenomenal warranty.

      @@MeynMotorGroup damn that sucks. My car has around 115k miles. How much would the VTC cost at the repair shop? Especially at a Honda repair shop.

      I think I’ve read it’s like $800 I don’t think it’s that high but might be a couple 100 for sure. Yea TSX was a great car but had a bunch of little problems like that and ok yea definitely get rid of your TSX before 120k Miles.
      Acura will warranty all Acura’s til 120k Miles for oil consumption and you don’t want to be stuck with it after that mileage. IS350 is another solid choice but pretty pricey. I do like the BMW 328i F30 models but get that CPO for sure if you want to go that route

    The only problem I have with the TLX is the double screens I just think it's too much it makes no sense & it makes it look tacky to me in my opinion.

    I bought a 40K Mile CPO 2016 TLX in March, the 4cyl but with the Tech pkg. So far I love it, I was looking at the new Accords, which I liked, but didn't like the price point of those, 30K to get them decently loaded. I paid about 19K for the TLX, hell of a car for that price in my book. It doesn't have to have premium gas, my sales guy said it was fine with no drop in performance, and both the internet and I seem to agree. I'm getting 29- 31 MPG in mixed driving. I have heard in other reviews that the V6 feels more front heavy and the transmission is less smooth, sound like you don't agree though. I haven't driven the V6 yet. And yes, the double screens is annoying at first. It took a while to get used to but now it's a not a big deal. You hit it on the head, a good first luxury car that can be had for way cheaper than it looks.

      Nice yea it’s a great little car and I really suggest premium because it’s a high compression 4 cylinder with direct injection, the premium fuel will help run your car smoother. And yes I like the V6 I don’t think it’s that front heavy and the 9 speed wasn’t bad either. Enjoy your ride my friend I appreciate you watching!

      Good u didn't go with the v6. Those 9 speeds aren't made by Honda. And I have heard they have problems In the long run. That's why I went with the 8speed 2.4.. I'm not a fast driver so it does well for me. And I love my car.

      Yeah ZF made the 9 speed automatic for Honda. It was a deal breaker for me on not getting the TLX
      I ended up going with a 2016 Honda Accord V6 Touring (6 speed AT which was made in house)

    I wish Nissan gave a shit about their cars enough to let the Maxima stomp on this thing like it should have. Especially nowadays with the 2019 refresh; the Maxima vs. TLX has been a thing forever and I always preferred the Maxima if you're going for the looks but now the SH-AWD coupled with this _not_ being a CVT phony sports sedan plus the new A-spec ones are not as sharp looking but better equipped overall. I hope the Maxima sees a Renaissance at some point before Nissan gives up on it, because it's such a cooler looking car than this but it's just not better anymore ):

Oh well, I'm a sportback fan now for as far into the future as I can see/handle. Model S, Stinger, Arteon, A7, Regal GS. Those are cars id love to see the Maxima try to seriously compete with but I just can't trust Nissan to do it

      @@MeynMotorGroup Definitely check it out if you can get ahold of one. I'm sure it'll be a good video especially since it's a new car that more people tend to care about. I test drove the fully loaded one the other day and maybe I'm just spoiled by the Stinger but the Arteon was quite underwhelming. It's noticably slower and it didn't feel like an AWD car when I launched it but maybe that has to do with the rigid chassis tuning of the Germans. I just didn't get a lot of _UMPHH_ transferred into the cabin and since it's not a V6 it doesn't sound great either. As a luxury cruiser though, it's not terrible. In typical VW fashion there's too much Piano black plastic everywhere and it's a little boring inside and out for my taste (granted, I drove the most boring color ever: white)). Me and the salesman jumped in the Stinger right after and he was like yeah this feels way better 😂. Only thing I like about the VW is the digital guages, the massaging seats, and the fact that the power liftgate will also close on its own if you walk away from it... Not sure why Kia decided not to do that. Other than that though, Stinger does everything else better.

    • @MeynMotorGroup
      @MeynMotorGroup  5 лет назад

      Oh yea Stinger has definitely spoiled you on power 😂 it would outrun that 440i that I tested but yea the rigid chassis also takes away from the kickback sensation you will get in the Stinger. They definitely tuned to Stinger to make an excellent first impression. Cars have come along way now and relatively affordable and yes a V6 in the Arteon would be ideal
