All I usually tell people, is that if they have any sort of 04-06 Acura TL in the automatic (5AT) option, they need to meticulously maintain the transmission fluid. That means popping the hood and checking the auto trans fluid after super long 8-10+ drives or stuff like cross country trips. If you have crappy ATF, by the time you start noticing issues, you may have already done a certain amount of damage to the internals. AT damage is serious, where with these trans’, they usually require a full or partial trans rebuild to fully repair/fix. Of course, swapping in the same pre-facelift 3G (04-06) AT will just have it fail again, especially if it’s already another old, clapped out transmission/gearbox. With the 07-08, the base and Type S both have upgraded AT’s. The 5AT is seemingly more beefy, but of course will still fail if you don’t take care of it. But that could be said about any automatic tbh. The manual 6MT option from the beginning of the Acura CL, TL, Legend, etc. has always been superior to the early automatic, so there’s really no debate there. Any of the old 6MT’s might even be more fun to drive, compared to the newer 6MT’s. But they all do well with the same premature gear oil/manual trans fluid changing. Unless you’re launching 3-4k+ RPM’s from a dead stop/dig or doing shit like burnouts and donuts, or just smashing the gear synchronizers daily to the point where the gear oil overheats, yeah…. The car might break, but it definitely handles everything the AT models tend to not be able to.
@@SanchoNacho Nope, Type S to base will not work for sure. But the facelift (07-08) model base might work? The Type S will not work with the base. But I’m also unsure if the 3.5 gen (07-08 facelift) base will fit with a pre-facelift (04-06) 3rd gen TL base model…
Is it confirmed that the 07-08 base models had an upgrade in the auto transmissions? I recently purchased a base '08 130k miles and first thing I did was a transmission fluid flush, oil change soon I plan on replacing engine mounts, timing belt, water pump, and of course lower control arm/ball joints. It was very difficult finding a type-s or manual at a decent price with lower miles (all were close to or over 200k). All in all tho I'm happy with the recent pick up.
@@retahdude Yes, they installed OEM trans coolers in the 5AT’s. And the Type S 5AT’s are also very solid as well. They’re not indestructible by any means, and they’re not inherently made for constant hard driving or tracking (no LSD in the 5AT). Do preventative maintenance like changing the ATF every other engine oil change, depending on how you drive. Some ppl get away with only changing it like every 20-40k miles, but it really depends on how you drive the car. I've a 2006 Acura TL and while it's a project car I'm loving every bit of it. Two tweeters, center dash speaker, two 6.5 door speakers, 2x rear 6.5 deck speakers and a free air 8in sub all powered by a stock amp. But if you wanted real sound you had to play the wire game and upgrade the amp. To me the only generation is the 3rd Gen. It's an amazing car even over a decade later.
Going to be getting my 4th TL beginning of 2024... I still miss my old ones and it's time to get another. They are comfortable and powerful enough for daily driving and they still look beautiful.
Very good and thorough video on the Acura TL… I’m a big Acura fan myself and was looking at getting an 3rd Gen TL or 2nd Gen CL (preferably Type-S trim for either) as 2nd car for a commuter car as I recently bought a 2023 TLX Type-S and I don’t want to run the miles up like crazy on my new TLX. Definitely can’t wait to see the TLX video!
Got a silver 04 with black interior and navigation for my first car. Found a old guy on Craigslist that put 96,000 miles on it (mainly highway) and got it for around 5 grand. I’ve been loving it ever since
@@plazmaremixd3890 thanks man. I've been thinking of getting one. It makes me worried but I think it all depends on how you drive and how the car was taken care of.
@@tonyyang3725 No problem, with standard maintenance it’s a very reliable car. The only problem I’ve had in 107k miles is getting a stronger battery for starting in extra cold winters, but other than that has been great all around. Good luck on your search!
i owned an '07 base model TL for 4 years before the timing belt broke and the engine died (remember to take care of those every 100k lmao). loved that car. comfortable, fun to drive, and oh so good looking.
watching this as i just got my 04 tl 6speed man. a few months ago and fw it i knew it came with brembos but didn’t know it had a limited slip diff and anti roll bars. definitely gonna make it a type s build. thankful that i’m the 2nd owner and it just reached 100,000 miles with it bein taken cared of!!
I've got an 06 aspec manual with 20 inch vossens rolled fenders had it almost 10 years now !! What a reliable car love it will never sell . Got my dream sedan 2 years ago b7 rs4 audi 2 legendary sedans
05 6MT owner who loves his car here. I own a 300zx twin turbo and my TL is by far superior to the Z when it comes to daily driveablity. My TL has close to 198K on the clock and still pulls as hard (or harder) that my TT Z with 74K! And on top of that, I get 16-26 mpg with my TL, can handle snow better and have dual cup holders! I bought it from the original owner for $4500 and I can tell you that it has been the best car for the money I have ever owned! The only "mods" on it are a K&N reusable filter (not CAI) and a SPEC type 1 clutch with aluminum flywheel and my god is it fun to drive!
I absolutely love my 4th gen TL. It's amazing. Just because it didn't sell well doesn't say much. It's finely built, super fun, super reliable and it looks great. The sales numbers do not represent how awsome of a car it actually is to own as a daily driver. It's a reliable all season AWD racecar with no blindspots that makes going to get groceries fun. When I say reliable I mean it's been through the harshest conditions possible and runs like new.
Got a 95 legend sedan as my first car and it's been my daily for over 2 years now. Real shit ill never get tired of driving that thing. The 3.2L V6 in it still feels great and is just enough power to be a fun car to drive and the stock leather interior w bose sound system makes it hard to believe that it's nearly 30 years old. Overall very grateful I was able to get one as my first car and has been pretty reliable luckily. Wish there was still a reliable market to heavily modify it but that shit still rides like a Cadillac I'm telling yall them old acuras don't play.
I've owned an 04 (bad tranny) and a 05. Now in my 2010 with tech package. Didn't used to like the 4th gen but started growing on me. Drives great but not as enthusiastic as 3rd gen
Bro was spot onnnn! Ik this a year ago but I’ve had my TL for about 2 years & the only problem Ive had w her is my alternator going bad but that was bc I wasn’t paying attention to it. All I do is keep the maintenance up on her🤷🏽♂️ & still to this day sitting at 220k miles she runs perfectly & smooth. Thinkin about putting a 3.5 in her in another year or 2 depending on my future plans.
Man I just love the TL & forever will I’m riding in a 2000 TL with 180xxx miles on it it’s tons of fun to driving & has enough power to push thru traffic still very reliable even has the original transmission! Planning on getting a 3rd or 4 gen I’m never leaving the TL family
couple facts that need to be corrected in your video. The ancestor to the TL is Acura Vigor, the Legend predecessor is the RL and RLX. I do agree with your take on the 3G TL (hence why I have so many of them). 2006 Acura TL was rated to 258 HP down from 270 HP despite the same motor and trans found in the 04-05 MY, this was done because the new SAE standard procedure on how to measure HP output, most lost power some gain. This was done to prevent manufacture cheated in the mid 2000s HP war. If you look at 0-60 mph and 1/4 time you will find the 258hp is more reliable repeated in real world scenario. Some manufacture ran their engine with no A/C, PS steering mounted and purposely low engine oil to achieve unrealistic number. 2007-2008 TL Type S engine out put was 286HP 256 TQ, NOT the 290 HP. The 05 RL rated at 300 HP but later reduced to 290 HP 256 TQ. The TL Type S use the same engine in the RL but with different head and cam profile where the RL peak torque came earlier in the power band. the 07-08 MMC added much needed modern features such as MP3 file disk, Aux input and the revise with better resolution Multi Information Display window. Navi is now slightly better than 04-06 units in term of functionality and resolution. Base model suspension got retuned toward comfort driving rather than sporty as found earlier. Auto trans is now a revised borrow design from the RL and much more reliable that came with a trans cooler, also came with down shift auto rev matching. If you looking for a 2007-2008 6spd, they only available in Type S trim. I was able to witness the raise and fall of the Acura brand from the Legend to now the current disgrace "Type S" in 2004-2005 people was trading their BMW 330i, Mercedes E320 for an Acura TL despite FWD. The interior of the TL made BMW interior of the same era like 15 years older, even the interior of M3/M5. Technology is superior to the competition. Fast forward to 2023, No HUD (when they do available you had to get Advance trim) no wireless carplay/auto, so much for "Advance". Pretty much got gapped by anything and everything, so much for "High Performance Type S". interior is about 10 years behind every one else.
Got a 2004 tl base model with 127000 for 5k clean interior and exterior. My mother taught it was a 2014 interior. Slapped a short ram Intake and you hear the vtec. Just change the transmission fluid oil and coolant accelerated better.
I used to have a 2001 Integra, I sold it and replaced it with a base model 2007 TL, it's a great car so far. It's an automatic, I drive in the city so I didn't want a manual.
FYI the 2004-2006 Acura TL had the same amount of HP as the 2007-2008 TL base but the numbers are different because they used a different methode to measuring the engine HP. So basically the 2004-2006 TL had 258 hp as well
Yeah the Honda/Acura Website says 270. So it had less power than the 03 Type S??? That would be a crazy thing because as an owner of both 2003 Tl Type S and a 2004 Base Model the 04 Base seems to be faster
I had an 05 6speed Acura TL as my first car! It was a great daily and very spacious I sold mine for a few main reasons: -no fold down seats so I couldn’t put snowboards in the car without a roof rack. -terrible on gas for not much power. It had worse fuel economy than the 330 e46 which is an in-line 6 rwd ~230hp car. (Similar to TL except fwd.) TL got 350km per tank vs. 400km (e46) when driven spiritedly. Keep in mind, the TL has a bigger gas tank too (17 gal vs 16.64. -Really felt the weight. It was my first car so I didn’t know what power to weight ratio was. I didn’t need the space so a civic si would’ve probably been better for my spirited driving. Aside from that, it was a great car if you don’t need fold down seats and fuel economy. The 6 speed manuals came with Type S goodies (4 piston Brembo front calipers, LSD) Looks timeless from the back. The front end is alright but it looks better with the aspec trim. I moved on to a mk6 gti and fully tuned it for torquey fun. Got my crackle tune run out of my system and sold the car because winters were getting boring with fwd. so I bought a clean e46 ZHP because I wanted a good rwd manual and naturally aspirated. Slapped a wavetrac on this since bmw wouldn’t give LSDs to non m e46s. (@Ketzhp if you all want to connect!)
I love my 2006 TL. I bought it knowing it would need some work, but then i blew the head gasket. That almost broke me and I seriously considered selling it and moving on. But I didn’t. I stuck it out and got the repairs done and I will never ever be selling this car. I absolutely love my 3G TL.
I’ve had 3 of em 2 05s and now a 2008 I’ve had a lot of cars an always return back to Acura TL for them to be 16-20 years old they look better than most modern cars
It was a great car for me that's for sure. Had an 04' for 11 1/2 years as a first car. Got decent gas mileage but yet was comfortable and stylish. The only grife it had was it was plagued with the automatic transmission going out which was a recall I believe. I miss ol' TiLa!
My dad owns the 05 tl and loves the hell out of it. But sadly it’s starting to give him a lot of problems after 350,000 miles and he just doesn’t have the energy to be fixing it like before. He’s thought of getting the new type s TLX but based on what benefits him the most is getting a Tesla with the first drop in price and tax credit
I was looking for a commuter car for the last couple of years. I have a pickup that was getting expensive to use because of gas and it has 230k miles on it. It ended in August when I bought a 2015 Lexus GS350. The 3rd gen TL would have been the car I would've bought except for it had 1 flaw. That flaw was it not having awd. I live in a region that has snow roughly 4-5 months of the year and my coverage area for my job has 8-9 mountain passes within it. So awd is a must. The 3rd gen TL is one of favorite looking sedans and I believe the styling still holds up extremely well. Even to the point I believe it beats most newer sedans of most manufactures, even from Acura themselves. I also have a 2001 CL Type S. Like so many others, the transmission went out. I tried to do the swap from a 2006/2007 6 cylinder Honda that is extremely popular, but it never worked out for me. So it sits in the backyard.
08 type S with 90k original miles and full OEM aspec kit was/is my first car! Bought it for 6k and was offered 11k for mine recently! I don’t think I’ll ever sell it to be honest
Im bias to the 4th gen but with some common performance and suspension mods and its alot of fun to drive amazing in the corners and decent enough acceleration to feel some g's while being a comfortable daily driver
love my acura. crashed my first car got the my current for graduating and i love it. has 260k+ miles and it's slowly fading out since it is a 05 TL. Honestly on the fence of buying a used car or buying a more expensive TL with 90k miles or less and modding it.
I had an 03 TL-S that was great but needed a new transmission under warranty several times. Then I had an 07 TL that I absolutely loved. I wish I'd never gotten rid of it. The 4th gen was disappointing.
The TL was just an upgraded Vigor. I still have a 94 Acura Vigor GS which is the Inline 5 2.5L with 176 Hp aka the Honda Vigor. The 96 TL looks just like the Vigor only bigger and fresher. Didn't even know the 96 TL came with the 5cylinder. Thought it was only V6
Acura Vigors are pretty rare these days but you never heard of them? They look like a cross between the Acura Legend in the front and a 2nd gen 4 door integra in the back.
This is so random but the beat that you are using in the background is the exact one me and my friend wrote a song for like 4 years ago in high school 😭
I got an 08 basically my first car it’s a 3.2 but it still fast and it has a sub but i Need to fix the air conditioning and my seats are ripped and my windshield gasket won’t stay glued down but it’s my most prized possession
I bought a base tsx for 800 canadian Spent $226 on donught gasket exhaust repair. $40 on 4 used coils..(onky needed 1 .now i have 3 bavk up. I need 1 rim..100.00 And left side rear side skirt snugged up. Its a daily now. Black with biege leather 5spd auto.2005 tsx. Not bad
I bought a 2008 6 speed type s and it’s clean and pretty stock so I’m going to do the 3rd muffler delete and all that. The 3rd gen is the best looking gen.
Man.. this makes me regret selling my car 04 TL with 189k miles. It ran perfect. I was surprisingly shocked with the bells and whistles.. Heated seats, power seats (passenger too), dual climate ac, MEMORY SEATS, and a moonroof. Like 🤯 I do love my 8th Gen 4dr Si though 🛑
I’ve owned my “Duchess” (as my boss named her because she’s older with class 😂) 06 TL for a year now after owning a Prelude, TSX, CL, and RSX (you see the theme here lol) this is by far my favorite.
The TL 3G A-Spec 6Speed A-Spec is the one that got away 😢 Despite owning later on Cayenne's GTS, Turbo S, and now a Plaid.... I STILL somehow miss the opportunity I could have had to own a TL 3G
Timing belt scares a lot of folks away from theses awesome cars but it's actually not that bad if you know how to use basic tools and follow RUclips videos.
246k on my 07 auto type s. Bad pcv valve so im having to re-seal alot of engine stuff and replace motor mounts also. But hopefully itll hold up another 100k
Could you do a video with good first car for us in Northern Europe? I seen you talk about Lexus in earlier videos but in America they are cheap but here in Sweden where I’m at they are pretty pricy some of them I think I saw a bunch of IS300 for around 20k$ if
This is not a good first car with the transmission issue and high gas prices. This video was the first search page, regurgitated. Almost good enough but this is Acura's accuracy and precision, and Honda's power of dreams we're talking about. You're right though. This car is a great compromise and is mostly pluses.

No joke a co worker gave me a 2004 TL for helping him dig a pool. Its my daily driver and I love it! I just released a video on this actually.
Got a 2015 TLX SH-AWD a year ago. Great blend of power, handling, interior trim/space. Gotta be a vid about about the TLX in future.
2013 Manual TL in black. Great vehicle, which just settles in great at 90-mph. SH-AWD is a real thing, especially when entering twisty on-ramps!
Unicorn find!😊
Got a silver 04 with black interior and navigation for my first car. Found a old guy on Craigslist that put 96,000 miles on it (mainly highway) and got it for around 5 grand. I’ve been loving it ever since
The old dudes just don’t know
@@ChronicallySmokinChronic bro what a deal wtf😂
I have a 2012 SH-AWD and every time I learn something new about it I appreciate it more. Thanks for this video!
Happy to help bro
You have any issues with oil consumption?
@@tonyyang3725 Nope, it sometimes leaks a tad due to its age but I’ve never found any signs of oil burning.
2004 TL, 2006 GS, 2008 M35, absolutely timeless designs
This was just a really well done video overall. I love my 03 TL, transmission slip and all
lol
Please try Lucas. Their products are terrific
Nope. Once its gone, its gone in thise trannies@@mrdave777
Btw it’s an 2005 TL base model
Ayyy good stuff bro congrats
I used to have a 2001 Integra, I sold it and replaced it with a base model 2007 TL, it's a great car so far. It's an automatic, I drive in the city so I didn't want a manual.
Got a 02 Base Tl with the 3.2 as my first car, great engine, good speed, great stereo and comfy couldn’t ask for anything more.
same got the type s it is so fun to drive
FYI the 2004-2006 Acura TL had the same amount of HP as the 2007-2008 TL base but the numbers are different because they used a different methode to measuring the engine HP. So basically the 2004-2006 TL had 258 hp as well
Does that mean the Type S had more than 290 hp?
@@mrdave777 no the tl type s have 290hp well 286hp actually but yeah the numbers are right it was more a thing for the 2004-2006 tl
So you mean the SAE read out? So all base TLs had 258hp?
Yeah the Honda/Acura Website says 270. So it had less power than the 03 Type S??? That would be a crazy thing because as an owner of both 2003 Tl Type S and a 2004 Base Model the 04 Base seems to be faster
I’m buying one at 220k but has brand new timing chain and valves I drove it and it’s very comfortable (I’m 6,5 300 pounds) beautiful car
The tl was always a great Segway to a nicer car. Cheap, affordable, luxury. It really is a great car
I had an 05 6speed Acura TL as my first car! It was a great daily and very spacious
I sold mine for a few main reasons:
-no fold down seats so I couldn’t put snowboards in the car without a roof rack.
The 6 speed manuals came with Type S goodies (4 piston Brembo front calipers, LSD)
Looks timeless from the back.
Love this car, honestly one of all my all time favorites!
Same here bro
98 tl I drive it everyday
It was a great car for me that's for sure. Had an 04' for 11 1/2 years as a first car. Got decent gas mileage but yet was comfortable and stylish. The only grife it had was it was plagued with the automatic transmission going out which was a recall I believe. I miss ol' TiLa!
Not too sure if u can do the AV6 swap on those years, but it did the trick for my 03 tl.
My dad owns the 05 tl and loves the hell out of it. But sadly it’s starting to give him a lot of problems after 350,000 miles and he just doesn’t have the energy to be fixing it like before. He’s thought of getting the new type s TLX but based on what benefits him the most is getting a Tesla with the first drop in price and tax credit
i love the acura TL definately my favorite acura great video keep it up! I love these videso you been making "what makes the XXXX so great?"
Thanks so much man I’ll keep doing them for sure
Don't understand Wat happened with the AV6 swap. Just did my 03 TL. Best thing that happened... It's a lot cheaper too...
08 type S with 90k original miles and full OEM aspec kit was/is my first car! Bought it for 6k and was offered 11k for mine recently! I don’t think I’ll ever sell it to be honest
The third gen TL is a beauty!
Im a 4x4 and truck type of guy but i love 07 type s. Great car
I pray to the car gods...That my new purchased 07 TLS 5speed holds up for a long time! ❤

TLX?
@@mrdave777 nope just a 05 TL or a newer TL not a tlx
Bro, you are a really good writer. Your scripts are way better than the ones on Ideal Media. Great content.
Owned a lowered 06 and I loved it! Had to sell it because of my new job but man, I miss that car.
Just wish it was AWD 😢
I had an 03 TL-S that was great but needed a new transmission under warranty several times. Then I had an 07 TL that I absolutely loved. I wish I'd never gotten rid of it. The 4th gen was disappointing.
Got an 05 3.2, absolutely love it. Underrated enthusiast car for sure
Tbh never even heard of the vigor
@@markroden yeah hope you looked it up! 😊
Acura Vigors are pretty rare these days but you never heard of them? They look like a cross between the Acura Legend in the front and a 2nd gen 4 door integra in the back.

glad I got my type-s when I did, because even high milage manual examples are selling in the $20k range now 😬
Nah seen quite a few nice S types under 5k. Especially the 2003 which is the worst year. Those 5 speed autos were problematic.
The only Acura that's really worth anything in the higher numbers are the nsx or the Integra R. The nsx California special was the ultimate.
@@user-wf8ol5hv6k the 3G type-s didn’t even come out until 2007

This is not a good first car with the transmission issue and high gas prices. This video was the first search page, regurgitated. Almost good enough but this is Acura's accuracy and precision, and Honda's power of dreams we're talking about. You're right though. This car is a great compromise and is mostly pluses.
