i started with the nook so i will always have a soft spot for it. However, now I am fully encased in the amazon kindle universe and if they ever came out with another device with buttons I would buy it so quickly. I've always been a buttons girl due to me starting with a nook.
I TOTALLY understand the nostalgia aspect of being loyal to a device, and there really is just something natural about clicking the buttons over touching the screen to advance the pages. I love that about the Oasis.
Someone just said the same thing about the Paperwhite. Maybe Amazon needs to make a "premium e-reader" that has the perks of the Paperwhite or the Oasis but is the size of the basic Kindle.
I completely agree. I started with Nook years ago. Then I switched to the Kindle Oasis because of the page-turn buttons. I have some issues with joints in my hands and swiping, particularly when reading in bed, was not good. This morning I received an email from Nook offering me a sizable discount to upgrade to Nook Glowlight 4e as a purchaser of an original Nook model. I'm considering it, but the page-turn buttons will probably make it a no. I would love an eReader that is very light weight, water resistant with page-turn buttons. I don't need or want a tablet function. Actually, I would love for Apple to come out with a tiny eReader. I have a ton of titles in my iBooks, but even with the smallest iPad mini, it was too bulky for me. As an aside - why isn't there a way to access eBooks in all devices? I would pay for a service that allowed this.
I have watched 7 different videos if this same device and by far this has been the most helpful and informative video for someone who is trying to make a decision if to purchase this device or a different one.
Thanks for making this video. 😊 I wish there were more videos about the current Nook line up. I have a kindle 6.8 paperwhite with only 8GB and the Nook Glowlight 4E. It’s exciting to see others excited about devices. SO THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. 🤗
I’ve thought about getting a Nook to compare to my kindle but since I do a lot of library books on my kindle through Libby I’m not sure if that would be practical. From what I understand you have to buy every book you want to read on the Nook device.
I think that you're absolutely right about Libby not having a "read on Nook" option, but a lot of free and reduced priced book sites like Book Bub do have an option to get the books from Barnes and Noble and read on Nook.
@@rhyta5042 Thank you for confirming that I can read library books on my Nook! I just have to figure out how to get them on there now. Please let me know if you have any tips!
@@mimiphilpott4067 I use the Overdrive program on the library site to checkout the books. I have Adobe Digital Editions program on my computer which allows overdrive to download the ebooks to my Nook.
Great review. I have many ereaders and I always go back to using the GlowLight 4. It just feels so good in hand. Also enjoy the buttons! I have since the first Kindle came out.
Thank you! Ya know, I never "miss" physical page turn buttons when I'm reading on a device that doesn't have them, but I LOVE them when I use a device that has them. How crazy is that?!! 😂
I really want to get a Glowlight 4! I've been using a Simple Touch for years and you can highlight full sentences on it... it's a bit wonky but I do it. I also have an iPad so I swap between the two to read from all sorts of sources. :) I just love a tiny Nook to take with me on the go, I just wish I had a backlit one! Also BUTTONS!!! I love physical buttons, I don't think I'd ever go for a non-button ereader. Mine is from 2011 so I think it's time for an upgrade... I saw B&N release a new version for pre-order a few days ago. I might wait to see what that's like before I make a decision. Ideally I'd like to go into the store and see how it feels in my hand before ordering. I was looking at Kindles and there are ad-supported ones????? HUH??? If I'm paying 100+ for an ereader, you better F off Amazon LOL.
😂 You’re not wrong about the ads on Kindles. I think they’ve been there for so long that I just accept that you have to pay more to get rid of them (they, of course, call the ad supported ones “discounted” 😂), but it’s a racket for sure. And I’m with you on the new Nook, too. I’m excited to see it. I’ve been practicing my Nook highlighting skills. I’m awful at it, but I think that bc I spend so much time on Kindles. Oh well - thanks for your thoughtful comment. Let us know what you decide about the Glowlight4+ when it comes out.
I started with a Nook Touch then went to a Nook Color and a couple of tablets before receiving a Kindle Fire as a gift and eventually I bought a Kindle Paperwhite which I use a lot. I love my Nook Glowlight 4! The buttons are what drew me in on the side and I love that there's a home button though I didn't know that I could turn the glowlight off and on by pressing that button. I haven't been using it much lately but want to start again. I'm planning to get a new Paperwhite next month as my current one has really slowed down. Thanks for information about the Nook and sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for your thoughts and reflections on the Nooks! I'm glad that you were able to get some useful information from my review. Enjoy your new Paperwhite! Let us know what you think of it!
I have different tablets and e-readers. I like them all and use them all but prefer the nook operating system. I also love the size and build of the nook glowlight 4.
I like the feel of the Glowlight4. I think I just need to use it more to get used to the operating system. I'm VERY excited for the new Glowlight 4 Plus to come put in September. That's going to be FUN!!
Me, too!! I’m so tempted to try to fire mine up, but knowing my luck, I’d resurrect some 90’s computer virus that would take down the whole internet. 😂
Danielle, is it worth getting this Nook Glowlight 4 with 6" screen or a Nook Glowlight 4 Plus with 7.8"? Have you review the Glowlight 4 plus? I'd wish the Nook had a translator like the Kindle does. Should I get the Nook Glowlight 4 plus because I have lots of .pdf files and I want to sideload them?
Honestly . . . I’ve REALLY been enjoying reading on Boox tablets. They are e-ink like the Kindles and Nooks, but since they run Android, you can load ALL of your readers onto them - so you can have ALL of your stuff in one place INCLUDING apps that will handle you PDF’s. I have been meaning to review the Boox Note 3 C for a while, but other things keep coming up. I will do it soon so that you can see it. It’s a big one, but they have ones that are smaller and less expensive.
I consider the nook at one point, but all my books are through amazon and i read a lot indie authors from KU that barnes and nobles sometimes dont have. Its a nice looking device but i love my kindles 😊
I started with a nook and switch to kindle because the books are just cheaper. I did just get this new one and I hope to use it more . I rather spend a few extra $ and give to Barnes instead of Amazon
I just ordered the new Nook, too!! I'm so excited. I hope that they addressed some of the with past versions. Let us know what you think about the new one!!
Thank you for this review. I guess I am a fidgety reader. When I use a reader with no buttons, I keep turning pages when I don't want to. I have an Oasis which I like very much, but I really prefer to have buttons on both sides because I seem to change hands a lot when I read. I hate having to rotate the reader for that. One thing you missed is Barnes & Noble has "Serial Reads" Each month they post a book on the "Readouts" section under Serial Reads. Starting at the first of the month they post a new chapter of a book each day which you can read for free. Overall, it really depends on which ecosystem you want to use. I use Nook and Kindle. However, for books that are the same price, I choose Nook because I like it better.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You are absolutely right -- I completely missed the serial reads. I haven't tried any of those; are they any good?

Oh yeah -- I forgot that the old Kindles didn't have any onscreen commands. Thanks for that reminder. Not all books have to be purchased from Barnes and Noble. You can buy EPub and PDF format books from other sources and read them on the Glowlight 4 (and probably other Nooks, but I don't know which ones).
If I buy this, I gotta know how to transfer my ebooks collection from my mac to Glowlight 4. Anybody know for sure I can do that? Because B&N doesn't allow me to purchase their ebooks online, due to regional crap.
I tried plugging my Glowlight 4 into my Mac this morning, and the Mac didn’t see it, but I didn’t have much time to mess with it. Hopefully someone else will have a good answer for you. If not, I will mess with it when I actually have time to fool with it and see what I can figure out.
You're welcome, my friend. I have done some more tinkering, and I can confirm that it does work but with a caveat. For me, it was a 2-step procedure. I had to download an app called Android File Transfer. When I open that, my computer seems to see the Nook "through" it . . . meaning that the Nook is listed in the Android File Transfer app when I open it. I can then open the Nook and drag books to it. I hope that this makes sense. I and filming a video on finding free and reduced-priced e-books right now, and I will include a quick demonstration of this in the video. :-)
I'm traveling right now and don't have a Nook with me, so I can't mess with it to see how to make purchases, but you can't buy e-books in the apps. It's because of the fees that Apple and Android charge for in-app purchases. Amazon and Barnes and Noble have disallowed e-book purchases in the apps. You just need to open a regular internet browser on your phone or tablet and go to the Barnes and Noble website, and you'll be able to buy your ebooks there. Once you buy them there, you'll be able to access them on your Nook or in your Nook app on your phone or tablet.
