Bluefin Tuna fishing in Maine, catching our first bluefin tuna along with some porbeagle sharks.

- On the 4th of July 2022 Jay and I hit the water at 4am, filled the live well with mackerel and headed out to the tuna grounds off southern Maine. Mostly small fish (100-150lbs) had been reported in the area this early in the season. I have a recreational permit allowing me to take fish under 73 inches and let's be honest what would I even do with 300lbs + of tuna. Around 10am and after catching a few small porbeagle sharks we got a bite. Took us roughly 30min to catch the fish using 80lb test on Penn 50 internationals on 6ft stand up sticks. Fish was roughly 100lbs which was a perfect size. If you would like a full video on the tuna recipe at the end of the video let me know.
Thank you for watching, fish responsibly and good luck out there.

Glad you broke the ice with the first tuna there had been a bunch of those size fish around this year 🤙been loving it keep em rolling
Already itching for another one.
Very Nice, but not raw!
Dude, your chef skills are as good as your fishing! That looked insanely delicious!
Great video!
Congrats! And thanks for the vid. I really want to try this. I've only been ocean fishing a few times in my life.
I appreciate the view and glad you enjoyed it. There are some excellent charters for tuna or even ground fish here in Southern Maine and you only have to go 10 to 20 miles out
Any particular recommendations? Seems like what you guys did was pretty fun
@@benjaminappold4081 we fish off my personal boat but I highly recommend the Bonnie Clark for ground fishing (haddock and cod) and the Molly Jane for Tuna which is what we caught in this video. Tuna fishing can be very very slow. I recommend the ground fishing. Good opportunity to see whales and tuna too but you also have a shot at catching ten or more types of fish and its pretty much a given that you'll catch fish.
Awesome fish! this past summer I went on a trip out of Casco Bay with a few buddy's and we caught a 14' blue shark and one of the guys caught a halibut but it was not big enough to keep. We also caught some monster Cod and Pollock!
I’m so happy for you but also furious I wasn’t on that boat lol
Epic dudes
Appreciate it
@@FishingWithBoyt Thank you very mutch... have a nice day.... see you….
How far out were u and what bait did use. I live in Scarborough and my son just fished in your tourney. Awesome channel
I really appreciate you guys fishing the tournament. We had live mackerel on that day but live squid and herring work great too. We were roughly 10 miles out in about 220 ft of water anchored up.
Are u doing charter trips?
I am not, sorry. I am a captain but not a maine guide, strictly fishing for fun for the time being
You fishing a ledge or anything or just drive 10 miles out and send live macs out. And do you use weights or balloons or just free line
Fishing ledges where it goes from the 200s down to the 300-350. I weight one or two down and put them on a biodegradable balloon to get them away from the boat/ space them out. Depending on the current or how frisky the mackerel is I put a weight above the leader. 10-20oz.
Thanks for the advice! I’ve always wanted to tuna fish just don’t have a big enough boat lol. do you send the Mac all the way down or do you just look for marks and go that far down?
@@drewlancaster9706 I'm only Inna 23 foot center console and i see 17s and 20s out there, just gotta pick your day and have the saftey gear. I like to look for marks to sew where they are sitting but I usually set one at 70 and one at 110 to start things off
Sweet! And I have a 17 foot triumph just never thought I could target tuna maybe on a calm day I’ll make it out there!
@@drewlancaster9706 highly recommend stopping in to Saco Bay Tackle, on rt1 in Saco. They can set you up with what you'll need for tackle and point you in the right direction for a spot. Lot of guys use big rods and reels but I have Penn 50s with 80lb test and use a stand up harness. As long as you are careful it can be done. Wouldn't go solo though, I always have a buddy or two who can run the boat to help. You'll need a NOAA Highly migratory Species permit, the recreational one to target tuna and or sharks. here is the link hmspermits.noaa.gov/
Hahahahahahahaha
You pooned a 30 lb fish!
Hahahahahahah
Are you saying that when presented with the opportunity to harpoon something, you would choose not to?
@@FishingWithBoyt whatever works for you. Nice fish
Appreciate it man. To be clear I'd stick a flounder if I knew it was over 12". Any excuse to pretend I'm a whaler in 1820 tossing beams at sperm whales not even knowing what a credit score or cholesterol is.
@@FishingWithBoyt I rag on all my buddies for pooping small butts. Most of the time they miss and their fillets are all messed up. I prefer a well placed gaf shot myself
