- In this episode, we target one of Victoria's largest fish the mighty Southern Bluefin Tuna, with unparalleled speed, power and beauty. We venture down to the south coast, renowned for giant barrel tuna. We fish from Portland although you can also catch these massive fish around Port Fairy, Port MacDonnell, closer to the heads of Port Phillip Bay and beyond.
Rigged with big heavy game gear including Tiagra 50w we marvel at the volume of dolphins, seals and gannets and work our way through some challenging easterly winds to catch a 100kg southern bluefin Tuna. This episode also covers heaps of helpful tips to help you catch tuna too. For some this is a helpful guide on tuna fishing for beginners.
If you would like to book a personal guiding service with Matt Cini to learn how to catch tuna, kingfish, snapper or deep dwellers then please contact matt directly or email us for contact details.

Awesome fight by Dan and the Bluefin, really impressed with the Captain keeping everything in the right spot to land such an amazing creature.
Well said, Captain did a great job and was awesome to see Dan land his first barrel.
Epic video Alan. I thought is was awesome how you were able to talk about your battle with throwing up etc. Other content would hide this stuff. Just shows how real your content is mate.
Thanks Andrew !! I've always tried to make the program relatable to viewers. Yeah were just trying to keep it real, were out there battling and learning just like everyone else. I make mistakes on the water but I learn from them and I'm honestly not built for offshore swells and im sure so many can relate to this. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback !!
Great vid guys, been watching for this one, well done.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you !!
Awesome video guys! Well done to Dan on his first barrel!
I have a recent video on my channel of me catching my first too 👌 I also struggle with sea sickness 😂
Thanks !! yeah offshore swells are killer for me, cool ill suss out your channel for sure
@fishingmad definitely. I haven't found a cure yet 🤣
cheers mate!
Wow! Thanks for the video(adventure) you have some Awsome Mates!
Thanks !! Yeah I travel thousands of kilometres this year for fishing and have been able to fish with some wonderful people
Great video Alan! Thanks for sharing the journey. Man I looked tired at the end of that!
Thanks !! I really hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for having me along for the journey. Yep, you looked spent at the end of it, but understandable when battling a 100kg fish. I cut out the bit when the Tuna gave ya a big whack as you were already done. A big well done and looking forward to the next adventure soon.
@@fishingmad I was watching it with my wife and I said “oh the tuna is about to hit me in my 🥜 “ and then it cut away 🤣
Yeah I was close to leaving it in there as it was actually really fun and you made a really funny comment when it happened, but it looked like you had already been through the wars wrangling an almost 100kg fish so i thought to take it out. ill send ya the raw footage so you can have it for yourself.
Matt cinni is a gun enjoy watching his videos nice work lads the work you put in paid off.
Thanks yeah Matt's a ripper bloke and a very good fisho
Cinni still the genie
His very good. His knowledge on our trip was outstanding.
Well done fellas great team effort 👍
Cheers from SE SA
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome video Alan great to see a bit of a change in content, your videos are amazing and it seems like you put a lot of effort into making quality content , which translates to cinema quality content like this. Keep up the awesome videos man!!🎉
Thank you so much, yeah the effort to put these vids together is crazy. 10 hours travel, 1 full day on the water followed by 30 hours of video editing. Its punishing at times but I love the process, the adventures and the people you meet. Travelled thousands of kilometres this year to cover a variety of locations and species, next focus is some land base stuff to keep the content fresh. Thanks for watching and supporting.
That sounds great, all the best in future
Thank you
Amazing mate, I love ur vids so much, even know in new to ur channel!
Keep up the AWSOME work and tight lines brother 🎣
Thanks so much, that's very greatly appreciated. heaps of content on the channel so hopefully you can watch some of the existing content.
Well done boys that’s a good fish and what a grind to get it I’ve always wanted to chase a barrel but that looks like a lot of hard work and bad weather cheers mate great to watch
Well done team.
Thank you
I would love to go fishing for bluefin. Amazing video ! But a bigger boat for me please 😂.
Well done guys that’s where I caught my first barrel at 11
Great video. Reminds me of fishing samurez reef of gladstone quite a few years back 👍👍👍
A few years ago we caught some big Bluefin at Jervis Bay NSW great fun to catch but tried a few ways to eat them not for me but the dogs loved it.
Yeah, just catching them is a great thrill. Jervis Bay is a great place for it too
Same as hard as I try I cannot eat raw tuna lol I’ll stick to the thrill of the fight
great vid mate that tuna was huge! btw will you do any vid on catching murray cod never seen ya do that before yet
Thanks and Yeah 100% over the next few weeks will be doing some land base stuff and some cod filming. I was supposed to spend a week up at Mulwala a few weeks ago targeting them but the trip was cancelled last minute. So just working on locations and stuff getting ready for it
@@fishingmad great thx mate can't wait for the next vid 😃
Thanks !!
👍 there's a saying,
If you want to go fishing use a lure, if you want to catch fish use bait.
the dream fish to catch!
It sure is. Such an amazing species. Speed, Size and Power
Love the content mate I want to get out chasing the tuna but I can't afford it
Yeah Tuna fishing is awesome, I only get offshore a few times a year. Yes it can be expensive that's for sure and the offshore swells can be very challenging too.
was that mac arthur wind farm you were drivingpadt? worked there back in the days now back in denmark 🇩🇰
enjoy these videos good stuff 👍
Yes it sure was, the windfarms opposite lawrence rock
Nice catch
Can I ask what line is it you used? Mono or Braid and did you have a a leader if so what pound was it? Thanks. Nice catch.
Pretty sure we were using 100lb Tasline, but topshot very heavily with 100lb mono. The reason for mono is fish this powerful can break the braid easily if it rubs against the boat, or reef, the mono is much more abrasion resistant.
First off amazing video and i love your content! Thank you!
Secondly,
Hi Alan, I'd like to ask for some advice. Can i use Aird xt combo (7ft 2-5kg or 1-3kg) or (7ft6 3-6kg) for land based bait fishing for the "bread and butter species"? Im hoping to do more bait fishing than soft plastics (and maybe lure fishing too). Whats your advice and which model would you chose? Thanks in adv
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the vid and yes 100% a 7 foot or so Aird in 2-4kg or 1-3kg is perfect for bread and butter species. Just remember 1-3kg with a 1000 reel is better for finese species like bream and 2-4kg paired with a 2500 size reel is more general purpose for pinkies, flathead, whiting, redfin, trout etc. Personally i love rods around 7 foot in length and find if rigged properly still cast really well. Aird are a great option in the entry level space.
@@fishingmad thanks for a prompt reply! Thank you for your advice! I reallly appreciate your help! I was judt worried about the lure rating as for land base I'd be using sinkers and all. However i guesss you'd have to gauge it to the current and use the appropriate set up for the appropriate day. Thanks once again !
Yeah that's exactly right and most lures and soft plastics don't weigh much at all, its only once you start casting spoons and metals that lure weight can be a real problem. When targeting bream your using jigheads between 1/28 - 1/12 most commonly and when targeting pinkies, flathead that sort of stuff 1/12 - 1/6 and those rods can handle that easily.
Welcome to the great south western roads
next time bring a spinning setup and cast to those fish jumping, kinda criminal youd drive through an opportunity like that
Agreed, that's exactly what I wanted to do, I 100% wanna go back soon and just commit to throwing popper, stickbaits and thats sort of stuff
What did it actually go, did you weigh it, pretty sure it didn’t go a hundred, love your show, keep on fighting
We didn't weigh it but chatting with a heap of locals and charters back at the ramp the consensus was that it was between 80-90 kgs, thanks so much for the kind words got heaps of amazing content that's mid production at the moment.
I'm Getting sea sick just watching it lol
Hi there, may I know any charter chasing for bluefin tuna?
Matt is still connected with the guys at Reel Time, we got chatting with those guys who were really helpful. I know there are many good charter operators up that way so google some options, but def look up reel time
I didn’t know you can get tuna like that so close to shore is that land you can see in the back ground how far out we’re yous
Was a few ks out from the ramp where we saw them jumping out the water and about 5ks out from ramp where the barrel was landed. So not to far out and we saw others in much closer too
@@fishingmad wow that’s insane I always thought they were miles and miles out in the deep
Id love to catch a tuna its my bucket list fish
They are amazing, unparalleled size, speed and power. hopefully you can tick it off one day.
Yea do they taste good when they are that big
Why didn’t you cast at that work up!?
Whats the best coin to find price wise
What pier was it u showed at like start
Portland Lee Breakwall opposite the boat ramp
SBT for the win.
Yep 100%
Weight of the fish?
We didn't weigh it but chatting with a heap of locals and charters back at the ramp the consensus was that it was between 80-90 kgs
That's a baby
😮
Good job, any whales
Yeah we saw hundreds of seals, dolphins, and the odd whale. Such an amazing site. If the conditions were flatter we prob would have seen more out there too
You guy's need a bigger boat.
The reels sound awful, like they are grinding and like they need oil.nd thought Rod was going to snap.
All a theory dont stress its made for it
Hey I’m from Portland can how did your mates say to catch those bait fish of the jetty thanks Tom👍
