@@xKyriakoZ it may not work for you or you ate certain foods that weren't good for you. For me has done wonders, I stopped for a while, going back to this because it makes me feel good, makes managing my type 1 diabetes even easier which I have managed pretty well for over 3 years since I found low carb/high fat. I lost weight while doing OMAD too. This doctor has helped so many people, not only obese and ttpe 2 diabetics but also others with G.I issues, type one diabetics as myself and people with other autoimmune conditions. Also having 4-5-6 meals to me is not normal. Too much work. Plus increases insulin which even though is necessary to live, too much can do as much harm, which has make many people fat.
@@xKyriakoZ Omad eating of 2000 calories low insulin release food, versus omad eating of 2000 calories processed food (high insulin release food) won't net us the same result. The former didn't raise insulin and thereby your body stores little fat (low insulin = fat withdrawal), while the latter will make your body store fat continuously (high insulin = fat storage). Both group could eat the same amount of 2000 calories and the first one will lose a significant amount of weight due to a very low insulin level throughout the day - just don't binge and eat like crazy, of course you'll gain weight (it's still 2000 calories, mate). Because even lambs & cows gained weight by bingeing only on grass. I wasted so long watching these videos and trying it myself. also I find it hard not eating for so long so why would I do it if it changes nothing. deficit is great I've been losing 3-5kg a month for long and it still works. never stopped working yet. and I'm pretty low fat rn. about 10kg of fat to go. then I'll be pretty much shredded. as far as I'm concerned even a McDonald's only calorie deficit will make you lose weight. it doesn't matter to weight. only to health. I'm eating decently healthy anyway though
Numerous studies have shown that when calories are equal weight loss will be the same.Meal frequency or timing or quantity is mostly irreverent when it comes to fat loss.It always concludes with Energy Balance

@@xKyriakoZ I’m so sorry to hear that your successful weight loss was interrupted by doing one meal a day. I’m a serious fan of Dr. Fung and have lost weight successfully (and kept it off) by following his advice. I do understand though, that as we are all individuals with individual reactions to different things, that one method does not suit everyone. If calorie deficit suits you then I think you have found YOUR way of dealing with too much weight. I hope OMAD hasn’t seriously derailed your efforts and that you can get back on track soon. I wish you all the best in your future efforts.

I started intermittent fasting 8 days ago. I lost 11 lbs already! I'm 5'3" 158lbs now and my first time in my life, I'm going to try 48 hours fasting....wish me luck everyone!!😙 🙏💖

@@neemajose4886 - I know you are asking @Vickie. Basically, get rid of all processed grains (no bread, cake, doughnut, pasta, etc.) and sugary drinks. Eat whole food, no labels to read.
I know this, and I still find myself getting restless and then looking in the fridge - and seeing nothing I am hungry for. It's not real hunger if you aren't willing to eat real food. My addiction is for the fake foods - processed foods - like cheese curls, corn chips, potato chips, and ice-cream. I never want to snack on a carrot, or some other real food - I eat those at meal times.
I do too. Mostly it is due to stress and the last few years have been incredibly stressful, looking after my parents, deaths, and the pandemic. All I want to do is read books and eat carbs. They do give you a mild serotonin bump. Sugar wasn't something until I looked after the parents who loved their 11 am pastries and it was there in the fridge and I couldn't let it go bad, could I? I have been working on the low carb diet since September and I have lost 10 lbs. That wasn't why I was doing it, my blood sugar was trending too high and with lots of diabetes in the family DNA I needed to get it under control. I need this pandemic gone so I don't have to worry about the rest of the family that I can't see at the moment.

I hear you J. I force myself to keep super busy and drink lots of flavoured green tea. Tapal brand (asian stores) strawberry flavour is my go to! If you are going to snack, do a small fruit and nuts. The health fat will satiate you! :)
Love the intermittent fasting! It's so easy compared to all of the diets I have been on throughout my life. Who would think it's just easier not to eat at all? I'm on a 5-day liquid fast right now. have lost 100 lbs to date with a little more to go and for the first time ever, I am certain weight will never be a problem for me again. I eat what I want but my appetite is very small now and many things that I used to eat are just not good anymore. I thank God for helping me discover this way of life, for I was surely killing myself. I'm a 66-year old woman and feeling great. Hoping I will be blessed with decades more of life, now that I have one!!!
Your story makes me very hopeful. I am a 64 year old woman. I started intermittent fasting in November, but got off track in February. I restarted a few weeks ago, following keto with 6 hour eating window. I've gone from a starting weight of 282 to 248. I have 100 more pounds to go. I like that my appetite is diminished and keto is relatively easy to follow. I had a very high addiction to sugar at beginning. Wish me focus, determination and luck!

Fasting can save your life! Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weght loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. You know what helps me on days, when I'm out of the blue hungry and very tempted to go over to the fridge to see what is going on there? Brushing my teeth. Sometimes I take it further and take a shower. And I remind me a few times: the mind is hungry, the body is not.
So true! Thankfully, if you wait awhile the hunger will pass, and I often think I'm hungry when I'm really just a bit bored. If I find something for my hands to do, or go for a walk, or get engrossed in a good show, I usually forget I was hungry within 20 minutes.

If you will just ride that wave of sudden hunger for a few minutes you will find that it passes pretty fast, and you feel fine again with NO hunger-pangs!! And if you experience hunger-pangs again, then ride-the-wave Again!😉 This was his awesome tip to those trying to fast until a certain time!😎

I've lost 70 pounds and gotten off ALL meds by just eating healthy one meal a day and occasionally fasting for 2 or 3 days...AND I'm not craving for food! Keep up the great work!

Just started fasting the first week of September & weighed 317lbs. 7 weeks later & I’m at 272.5. I’ve been trying different fasts. I started 16/8 for a couple of weeks until it was easy. I then did the 20/4 for a month before it got easy. I’m now doing omad for the last month. I need to get rid of food in my freezer because I don’t eat it anymore. I eat a keto type diet for my one meal with some days eating a normal meal of burgers, pizza, chicken tenders, etc. seems to keep me satiated & I don’t obsess over food like I used to. My goal is to be 200lbs by April. I’m 61.

@@Julia_Berrrlin yes, sure. But if you stick to whole, unprocessed foods, after a while you'll become insulin sensitive again. Just keep eating real unprocessed food and doing intermittent fasting. That's all you need to do. It shouldn't take long until you see the results ❤
I agree! Almost everything is possible if you have discipline and you exert effort! Nothing will happen if people will always find excuses just because they prioritize the pleasure of eating sooooo much than their body need.

It does matter. They didn't study for many years for nothing. If it didn't work, you were doing something wrong. Don't badmouth someone and telling it's BS just because it didn't work for you.
Yesss!!!!!, after 65 years I getting on track. Aug 14, 2021 212 lbs, October 23, 202 lbs. If you are not hungry, why eat? that is genius and awe inspiring. It makes so much sense. And I have been guilty of that many times. Fortunately I am doing much better now.
By doing OMAD, I feel as if I've added 2-3 hours to each and every day! I spend far less time shopping, prepping and cooking food, eating, and cleaning up the kitchen.
I was diagnosed at stage 3 liver disease in January was told I had 2 years left in life if I didn't start a life style change Liver update So in January my liver levels were f2 the highest and fat was a 3 out of 4 August my liver levels were a f 0 and fat 1 out of 3 so when I go back in February she said I should be out of liver failure completely I started may 31st on my journey OMAD 23/1 Iwent from 283 down to 214 have 40 left to go

I love all your RUclips videos and they have helped me so much, I’m now eating in a 6 hour window (11am-5pm) and fasting the rest (3 times eating a day) however interestingly I added a snack (apple) in between my breakfast and lunch and I found my hunger pains increased a lot so I took it away and I don’t get them again, Ive been on this regiment for 4 weeks and have lost 14 pounds (1 stone) and a noticeable difference in my belly fat, I’ve also now added in 3 miles a day brisk walking. This is so true. At my workplace someone always brings something to snack for all colleagues. Many wondered why I don't snack at work and when I tell them about intermittent fasting I often heard something like "eating only in the evening can't be healthy". Almost everyone gained weight visibly in the past five years since i started working there while I lost 60 lbs. At least I could convince one of my colleagues to try intermittent fasting and he loves it. Too bad he doesn't speak/understand English so I couldn't point him to your videos. But fortunately there are many sources of information in almost any language at this point. I bet your work had great influence in this development as well. Thanks Dr. Fung
I always used to eat many times a day. I couldn’t stand any hunger. At the slightest twinge or hunger I’d get get a snack. Always carried a clif bar when I went out. Started 16/8 intermittent fasting 2 1/2 years ago and have done it ever since. And changed diet to Mediterranean type loaded with veggies and other whole plant foods. I needed a strict rule to follow for many months to learn to only eat during mealtime. Today, my weight is the healthiest possible, I’ve nearly stopped arthritis and chronic pain that I had before, and it feels more or less normal to fast (today I do 2mad). A huge improvement!
I took the advice from a dietitian for two weeks. 3 meals and 3 snacks. Low fat too. This was sometime around 2001 or so. It led me to gain 7 kilos in 10 days. Never ever again.
Yes. We were busy all the time. We had to walk places, take the stairs, do chores, shopping, preparing, gardening. Nowadays, with technology, we don't even get up to turn on or off the light!! Alexa will do it for us. We are constantly sitting down... we don't even go the library any more, we have the technology to do any research instantly any time during the day. We do our shopping online and we are constantly sitting in front of a screen... Add to all that the constant eating, the mindless eating, the processed food. Have lost 60 lbs. since middle of June thanks to The Obesity Code! As soon as I eschewed sugar and junk food, and started eating a diet high in healthy fats, I was so satiated I never even needed snacks. I fast 16-23 hours a day, and about once a week skip eating for one day altogether. It's not nearly as difficult as you'd think, once you don't have those wicked blood sugar swings from eating junk. It's called being "fat adapted" and your body switches much faster to burning your fat stores for fuel, after it depletes the sugar stores in your liver, which will be much lower with low-carb eating.
Make sure u eat lotsa vegetables, fruits, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, whole grains & beans. These foods give u all the fat & Fiber u need! "THE FAT U EAT US THE FAT U WEAR"
@@jgrysiak6566 Umm, no, I got up to almost 300 lbs. eating those foods because I was VERY insulin resistant. I lost 60 lbs. in 4 months eating lots of meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries. These foods don't spike my insulin, and the weight has been falling off. I save sweet potatoes for special occasions, same with most fruit now. We all have to find the diet that our bodies respond to, and this one works for me, very very well. And - there are NO essential carbohydrates, only essential fats and amino acids (protein).

I absolutely agree with everything here. I found Dr Fung and with the information I learned from his books and videos I'm losing the rest of the weight that I have to lose. But, a snack does not necessarily have to be like an appetizer. There are times when I've biked for 45 minutes and I have a piece of cheese or a few ounces of blueberries or a small handful of pecans. Again, please don't misunderstand me, the general principle is correct. We do not need to snack. We should not snack between meals, certainly not in the way most Americans do with processed foods that are full of carbs, sugar and seed oils. There is a place occasionally for a healthy snack but it is context dependent. I probably didn't need to make this comment at all, it's obvious that he's not talking about the post-workout handful of blueberries or ounce of cheese. I am grateful for Dr Fung, I've shared his books and videos with more people than I can count. He has so much credibility because he doesn't make money from sharing these videos. He pushes back against the message the for-profit system is telling us, he genuinely cares about his patients and indeed all of us. People eat when they're not hungry because they've been given the message that they have to eat every few hours to keep their metabolic rate up. Or they snack because they are consistently hungry because they're told not to eat the things that will make them full. If you're avoiding fats and eating a bowl of cereal, you probably are going to be hungry because you have nothing to sustain you. There are two groups that benefit from this message, the fast food manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry. We don't. And that's why they aren't going to tell us not to eat. If we fast, if we eat healthily, profits from fast food and medications go way down. Listen to Dr Fung, not conventional medicine. When you eat a healthy break fast meal, at whatever time of the day it is, you aren't going to want a snack. I have a couple of eggs cooked in butter, some vegetables sauteed in butter also, usually cherry tomatoes and spinach. I eat that with half an avocado. Cut it into cubes and put some lemon juice on it and salt. There's nothing more delicious. I make almond flour-based crackers at home because I miss something bread-like. I know I can buy them but when I make them at home I control the kind of oil that gets used and I want to avoid oils that are more inflammatory. I'll have one or two of those with my eggs and avocado if I'm hungry. Two or three tablespoons of heavy cream in my coffee and that's the meal. Between 600- 900 calories depending on if I have the avocado or crackers and you are not going to be hungry for a while.
It's actually really difficult to take a mass of complex science about weight loss and translate it into simple practical messages for a wide audience. THANK YOU!
I remember growing up in the 70's. I was shocked one day to see my friend go to her fridge and take out juice and pour herself a big glass. In my house we kids were not even allowed to OPEN the fridge. Three meals full stop. Needless to say me and my brother and sister were skinny, the neighbors were fat.
I can relate also grew up in the 70's. My parents were strict as well. We were family 7 kids & 3 meals no treats except during holidays or birthdays. We were never sick or fat.
I was in college in the late '70s, and I was shocked to see someone eat in class one day. My best friend and I looked at each other like "what is WRONG with him??" because it certainly wasn't the norm at the time here, and it seemed rude. Even at work, no one ate at their desks--you ate in the cafeteria between specific hours. Nowadays, no one would think twice about seeing those situations.
I was a 70’s kis too..I stole a pork chop once before dinner…lol, I didn’t get meat for a week! When I saw “a few good men” and he was banging that pot chanting “I stole a pot” lol 😂 I laughed, I remembered that pork chop …RIP mom and pop!
Same here! Grew up in the late 60's, early 70's. We had three meals a day and no snacks other than an occasional fruit jor small box of raisins. We had no candy, cookies, cakes, chips, etc in my house. My mom used to play cards every week and when it was her turn to host, she would hide the snacks so that my sister and I couldn't find them. We knew where she hid them. Even during Halloween, we were allowed only one piece of candy. Although we did not have money and some people would say we were poor, I believe my mom was strict for other reasons; she didn't want us to get "fat." We couldn't have potatoes or ice cream because they were "fattening." It was always about weight. Decades later, my sister and I have battled but perhaps overcome eating disorders. I think I have it under control with the ADF - thanks to Dr. Fung. My sister too is following intermittent fasting -mostly OMAD.
Thank to dr Jung, I am 57 woman with belly fat that I suffer from that. I started fasting 16/8from one moths ago and lost some little weight. I hope it works for my belly fat.
This makes so much sense. We are brainwashed by processed food manufacturers to eat foods that are unhealthy. Marketing and advertising has more sway than science. This is detrimental to society.

~ I find that doing yard work and house cleaning is a good distraction from "snacking ". Also a walk around the block - usually you meet someone and talk for a few minutes. 🙂👌

I'm very dicipline with myself exercise and walk daily used to swim but quit a week ago too cold I do aerobic, weights and walking and plenty of water.All my vital signs are great too many obesity in this country.
It always amuses me when normal sized people talk about getting busy so that you don’t think about food all the time. I work full time, have 2 kids and a house & garden to look after and there’s never ever a day when I’m too busy to think about food nearly all day long. Even 2 years of keto and daily 18 hours fasting hasn’t changed this. People who fatten easily like Gary Taubes calls us can’t stop thinking about food. It’s impossible
I know that feeling. But what I've learned personally and professionally is that this can indicate the causes are mostly emotional not physical. It took me a while to recognize/admit it. Eating a donut before dinner probably cause you to eat more. One thing I realized when I was busy at work and just ate apples for snacks, thinking they were healthy, I just felt more hungry than ever. Fasting was a way better option when busy.
I was so much thinner when younger because I didn’t snack I was too busy and it wasn’t around .. now that’s what it is it’s entertaining something to do .. hard to keep busy plus now it it’s more of a addiction now .

OMG I can't agreed more that if I don't so anything engaging or I sit in front of computer/TV, I will be eating way more and I will feel hungry. When I am engaged in some work I don't even feel hungry and I surprise myself looking at the clock that I haven't thought about eating when I normally do.
We're a generation of addicts. No more. I switched to two meals per day, no exceptions, no matter how miserable I feel. I just drink coffee when I crave something. Bigger meals, lower total daily calories, and barely any carbs at all. Feels great.

I wasn’t super overweight but I wanted to drop some pounds. The biggest change I made was not snacking. It was hard at first but now I can really see the difference and seeing family over the holidays I can see how much they all snack. It’s fascinating.
Good video, the problem is the system( governments, healthcare, big corporations, pharmaceuticals , social media ), the sicker we are, more money for them to make.
When I refuse a snack I'm frequently given the lecture.. "life is too short, enjoy it". And people don't like to be told, life is short so I'd prefer to live it to without compromising my health. I do enjoy a snack but not all the time!
A major cause of obesity that no one is talking about is medications. Many medications, especially those used to treat things like depression, can cause major weight gain, even if a person is restricting calories and exercising. I would like to know how to treat this kind of weight gain.
I used to get headaches whenever I didn't eat for a few hours. Dieticians kept telling me I need to eat 6 small meals a day to loose weight, I felt hungry and terrible all the time. Fasting and Intermittent fasting are saving my life. Fasting is amazing, even though I'm still obese, I'm loosing weight and my skin is so smooth. I'm currently on day 11 of a prolonged water fast. A part that I think is missing, and it is a big part, is the importance of how processed foods are addictive. Someone who lives on processed foods gets hungry the same way someone who smokes a lot craves a cigarette all the time. They are an addict! We don't grab for a muffin because it is easy. Nuts are easy. A hunk of cheese is easy. But nuts and cheese don't satisfy, in the ultra short term, our addiction.

i wasted weeks on their videos and went into the hell of doing OMAD for a month right after i lost 25kg in 7 months using calorie deficit (i was losing several kgs every month until i started omad)
the omad month i gained 4kg
its unreal how bad this advice is. yes i did eat alot of calories in that meal, but thats what those docs say that calories isnt the point. its just about not eating frequently
in conclusion, im sure that calorie deficit is the only thing that matters to losing weight. unless my body responds the exact opposite from other humans.. maybe an im alien.
so sad that i believed in this bs. if you are losing weight doing omad, its not cause of omad its cause in 1 meal u cant fit in alot of calories. so if you prefer 2-3-4-5-6 meals a day do that it doesnt matter!!

For me has done wonders, I stopped for a while, going back to this because it makes me feel good, makes managing my type 1 diabetes even easier which I have managed pretty well for over 3 years since I found low carb/high fat. I lost weight while doing OMAD too. This doctor has helped so many people, not only obese and ttpe 2 diabetics but also others with G.I issues, type one diabetics as myself and people with other autoimmune conditions.
Also having 4-5-6 meals to me is not normal. Too much work. Plus increases insulin which even though is necessary to live, too much can do as much harm, which has make many people fat.
@@xKyriakoZ Omad eating of 2000 calories low insulin release food, versus omad eating of 2000 calories processed food (high insulin release food) won't net us the same result.
The former didn't raise insulin and thereby your body stores little fat (low insulin = fat withdrawal), while the latter will make your body store fat continuously (high insulin = fat storage).
Both group could eat the same amount of 2000 calories and the first one will lose a significant amount of weight due to a very low insulin level throughout the day - just don't binge and eat like crazy, of course you'll gain weight (it's still 2000 calories, mate).
Because even lambs & cows gained weight by bingeing only on grass. I know, as I used to be one of them :D

deficit is great I've been losing 3-5kg a month for long and it still works. never stopped working yet. and I'm pretty low fat rn. about 10kg of fat to go. then I'll be pretty much shredded. as far as I'm concerned even a McDonald's only calorie deficit will make you lose weight. it doesn't matter to weight. only to health.

Numerous studies have shown that when calories are equal weight loss will be the same.Meal frequency or timing or quantity is mostly irreverent when it comes to fat loss.It always concludes with Energy Balance

@@xKyriakoZ I’m so sorry to hear that your successful weight loss was interrupted by doing one meal a day. I’m a serious fan of Dr. Fung and have lost weight successfully (and kept it off) by following his advice. I do understand though, that as we are all individuals with individual reactions to different things, that one method does not suit everyone. If calorie deficit suits you then I think you have found YOUR way of dealing with too much weight. I hope OMAD hasn’t seriously derailed your efforts and that you can get back on track soon. I wish you all the best in your future efforts.

@@neemajose4886 - I know you are asking @Vickie. Basically, get rid of all processed grains (no bread, cake, doughnut, pasta, etc.) and sugary drinks. Eat whole food, no labels to read.
I know this, and I still find myself getting restless and then looking in the fridge - and seeing nothing I am hungry for.
It's not real hunger if you aren't willing to eat real food. My addiction is for the fake foods - processed foods - like cheese curls, corn chips, potato chips, and ice-cream.
I never want to snack on a carrot, or some other real food - I eat those at meal times.
I do too. Mostly it is due to stress and the last few years have been incredibly stressful, looking after my parents, deaths, and the pandemic. All I want to do is read books and eat carbs. They do give you a mild serotonin bump. Sugar wasn't something until I looked after the parents who loved their 11 am pastries and it was there in the fridge and I couldn't let it go bad, could I?
I have been working on the low carb diet since September and I have lost 10 lbs. That wasn't why I was doing it, my blood sugar was trending too high and with lots of diabetes in the family DNA I needed to get it under control. I need this pandemic gone so I don't have to worry about the rest of the family that I can't see at the moment.

Love the intermittent fasting! It's so easy compared to all of the diets I have been on throughout my life. Who would think it's just easier not to eat at all? I'm on a 5-day liquid fast right now. have lost 100 lbs to date with a little more to go and for the first time ever, I am certain weight will never be a problem for me again. I eat what I want but my appetite is very small now and many things that I used to eat are just not good anymore. I thank God for helping me discover this way of life, for I was surely killing myself. I'm a 66-year old woman and feeling great. Hoping I will be blessed with decades more of life, now that I have one!!!

Your story makes me very hopeful. I am a 64 year old woman. I started intermittent fasting in November, but got off track in February. I restarted a few weeks ago, following keto with 6 hour eating window. I've gone from a starting weight of 282 to 248. I have 100 more pounds to go. I like that my appetite is diminished and keto is relatively easy to follow. I had a very high addiction to sugar at beginning. Wish me focus, determination and luck!

Some of the many benefits of fasting and low carb diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.

When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Fasting also causes HGH and testosterone levels to spike relative to a causing feast-state. The only exceptions are mammals whose hibernation strategy involves not just depleting fat stores but muscle stores, too, such as squirrels. But for mammals that don't hibernate (most rats, lions, humans) or for mammals that hibernate without muscle wastage (bears, prairie dogs) food deprivation naturally causes a rise in testosterone.

You know what helps me on days, when I'm out of the blue hungry and very tempted to go over to the fridge to see what is going on there? Brushing my teeth. Sometimes I take it further and take a shower. And I remind me a few times: the mind is hungry, the body is not.
So true! Thankfully, if you wait awhile the hunger will pass, and I often think I'm hungry when I'm really just a bit bored. If I find something for my hands to do, or go for a walk, or get engrossed in a good show, I usually forget I was hungry within 20 minutes.

If you will just ride that wave of sudden hunger for a few minutes you will find that it passes pretty fast, and you feel fine again with NO hunger-pangs!! And if you experience hunger-pangs again, then ride-the-wave Again!😉 This was his awesome tip to those trying to fast until a certain time!😎

Even the 'famous' Dr. Oz, has had guests that spread the misinformation of snacking throughout the day...what a bunch of hooey! You are right on Dr. Fung. I've lost 70 pounds and gotten off ALL meds by just eating healthy one meal a day and occasionally fasting for 2 or 3 days...AND I'm not craving for food! Keep up the great work!

Just started fasting the first week of September & weighed 317lbs. 7 weeks later & I’m at 272.5. I’ve been trying different fasts. I started 16/8 for a couple of weeks until it was easy. I then did the 20/4 for a month before it got easy. I’m now doing omad for the last month. I need to get rid of food in my freezer because I don’t eat it anymore. I eat a keto type diet for my one meal with some days eating a normal meal of burgers, pizza, chicken tenders, etc. seems to keep me satiated & I don’t obsess over food like I used to. My goal is to be 200lbs by April.

i wasted weeks on their videos and went into the hell of doing OMAD for a month right after i lost 25kg in 7 months using calorie deficit (i was losing several kgs every month until i started omad)
the omad month i gained 4kg
its unreal how bad this advice is. yes i did eat alot of calories in that meal, but thats what those docs say that calories isnt the point. its just about not eating frequently
in conclusion, im sure that calorie deficit is the only thing that matters to losing weight. unless my body responds the exact opposite from other humans.. maybe an im alien.
so sad that i believed in this bs. if you are losing weight doing omad, its not cause of omad its cause in 1 meal u cant fit in alot of calories. so if you prefer 2-3-4-5-6 meals a day do that it doesnt matter!!

If you are not hungry, why eat? that is genius and awe inspiring. It makes so much sense. And I have been guilty of that many times. Fortunately I am doing much better now.
By doing OMAD, I feel as if I've added 2-3 hours to each and every day! I spend far less time shopping, prepping and cooking food, eating, and cleaning up the kitchen.
Fasting does leave more time free. I love to cook, ( proper food) but fasting gives me time to do other things too
I was diagnosed at stage 3 liver disease in January was told I had 2 years left in life if I didn't start a life style change Liver update So in January my liver levels were f2 the highest and fat was a 3 out of 4 August my liver levels were a f 0 and fat 1 out of 3 so when I go back in February she said I should be out of liver failure completely I started may 31st on my journey OMAD 23/1 Iwent from 283 down to 214 have 40 left to go

I love all your RUclips videos and they have helped me so much, I’m now eating in a 6 hour window (11am-5pm) and fasting the rest (3 times eating a day) however interestingly I added a snack (apple) in between my breakfast and lunch and I found my hunger pains increased a lot so I took it away and I don’t get them again, Ive been on this regiment for 4 weeks and have lost 14 pounds (1 stone) and a noticeable difference in my belly fat, I’ve also now added in 3 miles a day brisk walking. This is so true. At my workplace someone always brings something to snack for all colleagues. Many wondered why I don't snack at work and when I tell them about intermittent fasting I often heard something like "eating only in the evening can't be healthy". Almost everyone gained weight visibly in the past five years since i started working there while I lost 60 lbs.
At least I could convince one of my colleagues to try intermittent fasting and he loves it. Too bad he doesn't speak/understand English so I couldn't point him to your videos. But fortunately there are many sources of information in almost any language at this point. I bet your work had great influence in this development as well. Thanks Dr. Fung
I always used to eat many times a day. I couldn’t stand any hunger. At the slightest twinge or hunger I’d get get a snack. Always carried a clif bar when I went out. Started 16/8 intermittent fasting 2 1/2 years ago and have done it ever since. And changed diet to Mediterranean type loaded with veggies and other whole plant foods. I needed a strict rule to follow for many months to learn to only eat during mealtime. Today, my weight is the healthiest possible, I’ve nearly stopped arthritis and chronic pain that I had before, and it feels more or less normal to fast (today I do 2mad). A huge improvement!

I took the advice from a dietitian for two weeks. 3 meals and 3 snacks. Low fat too. This was sometime around 2001 or so.

Yes. We were busy all the time. We had to walk places, take the stairs, do chores, shopping, preparing, gardening. Nowadays, with technology, we don't even get up to turn on or off the light!! Alexa will do it for us. We are constantly sitting down... we don't even go the library any more, we have the technology to do any research instantly any time during the day. We do our shopping online and we are constantly sitting in front of a screen... Add to all that the constant eating, the mindless eating, the processed food.

Have lost 60 lbs. since middle of June thanks to The Obesity Code! As soon as I eschewed sugar and junk food, and started eating a diet high in healthy fats, I was so satiated I never even needed snacks. I fast 16-23 hours a day, and about once a week skip eating for one day altogether. It's not nearly as difficult as you'd think, once you don't have those wicked blood sugar swings from eating junk. It's called being "fat adapted" and your body switches much faster to burning your fat stores for fuel, after it depletes the sugar stores in your liver, which will be much lower with low-carb eating.
Make sure u eat lotsa vegetables, fruits, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, whole grains & beans. These foods give u all the fat & Fiber u need!

@@jgrysiak6566 Umm, no, I got up to almost 300 lbs. eating those foods because I was VERY insulin resistant. I lost 60 lbs. in 4 months eating lots of meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries. These foods don't spike my insulin, and the weight has been falling off. I save sweet potatoes for special occasions, same with most fruit now. We all have to find the diet that our bodies respond to, and this one works for me, very very well. And - there are NO essential carbohydrates, only essential fats and amino acids (protein).

I absolutely agree with everything here. I found Dr Fung and with the information I learned from his books and videos I'm losing the rest of the weight that I have to lose. But, a snack does not necessarily have to be like an appetizer. There are times when I've biked for 45 minutes and I have a piece of cheese or a few ounces of blueberries or a small handful of pecans. Again, please don't misunderstand me, the general principle is correct. We do not need to snack. We should not snack between meals, certainly not in the way most Americans do with processed foods that are full of carbs, sugar and seed oils. There is a place occasionally for a healthy snack but it is context dependent.
I probably didn't need to make this comment at all, it's obvious that he's not talking about the post-workout handful of blueberries or ounce of cheese. I am grateful for Dr Fung, I've shared his books and videos with more people than I can count. He has so much credibility because he doesn't make money from sharing these videos. He pushes back against the message the for-profit system is telling us, he genuinely cares about his patients and indeed all of us.
People eat when they're not hungry because they've been given the message that they have to eat every few hours to keep their metabolic rate up. Or they snack because they are consistently hungry because they're told not to eat the things that will make them full. If you're avoiding fats and eating a bowl of cereal, you probably are going to be hungry because you have nothing to sustain you. There are two groups that benefit from this message, the fast food manufacturers and the pharmaceutical industry. We don't. And that's why they aren't going to tell us not to eat. If we fast, if we eat healthily, profits from fast food and medications go way down. Listen to Dr Fung, not conventional medicine.
When you eat a healthy break fast meal, at whatever time of the day it is, you aren't going to want a snack. I have a couple of eggs cooked in butter, some vegetables sauteed in butter also, usually cherry tomatoes and spinach. I eat that with half an avocado. Cut it into cubes and put some lemon juice on it and salt. There's nothing more delicious. I make almond flour-based crackers at home because I miss something bread-like. I know I can buy them but when I make them at home I control the kind of oil that gets used and I want to avoid oils that are more inflammatory. I'll have one or two of those with my eggs and avocado if I'm hungry. Two or three tablespoons of heavy cream in my coffee and that's the meal. Between 600- 900 calories depending on if I have the avocado or crackers and you are not going to be hungry for a while.

I remember growing up in the 70's. I was shocked one day to see my friend go to her fridge and take out juice and pour herself a big glass. In my house we kids were not even allowed to OPEN the fridge. Three meals full stop. Needless to say me and my brother and sister were skinny, the neighbors were fat.
I can relate also grew up in the 70's. My parents were strict as well. We were family 7 kids & 3 meals no treats except during holidays or birthdays. We were never sick or fat.
I was in college in the late '70s, and I was shocked to see someone eat in class one day. My best friend and I looked at each other like "what is WRONG with him??" because it certainly wasn't the norm at the time here, and it seemed rude. Even at work, no one ate at their desks--you ate in the cafeteria between specific hours. Nowadays, no one would think twice about seeing those situations.
I was a 70’s kis too..I stole a pork chop once before dinner…lol, I didn’t get meat for a week! When I saw “a few good men” and he was banging that pot chanting “I stole a pot” lol 😂 I laughed, I remembered that pork chop …RIP mom and pop!

Same here! Grew up in the late 60's, early 70's. We had three meals a day and no snacks other than an occasional fruit jor small box of raisins. We had no candy, cookies, cakes, chips, etc in my house. My mom used to play cards every week and when it was her turn to host, she would hide the snacks so that my sister and I couldn't find them. We knew where she hid them. Even during Halloween, we were allowed only one piece of candy. Although we did not have money and some people would say we were poor, I believe my mom was strict for other reasons; she didn't want us to get "fat." We couldn't have potatoes or ice cream because they were "fattening." It was always about weight. Decades later, my sister and I have battled but perhaps overcome eating disorders. I think I have it under control with the ADF - thanks to Dr. Fung. My sister too is following intermittent fasting -mostly OMAD.

~ I find that doing yard work and house cleaning is a good distraction from "snacking ". Also a walk around the block - usually you meet someone and talk for a few minutes. 🙂👌

Hi Jason thanks for your feedback. I have been fasting and follow your guideline and it's a champion! I'm back to my old weight never felt better and more energy. I'm very dicipline with myself exercise and walk daily used to swim but quit a week ago too cold I do aerobic, weights and walking and plenty of water.All my vital signs are great too many obesity in this country.

It always amuses me when normal sized people talk about getting busy so that you don’t think about food all the time. I work full time, have 2 kids and a house & garden to look after and there’s never ever a day when I’m too busy to think about food nearly all day long. Even 2 years of keto and daily 18 hours fasting hasn’t changed this. People who fatten easily like Gary Taubes calls us can’t stop thinking about food. It’s impossible
I know that feeling. But what I've learned personally and professionally is that this can indicate the causes are mostly emotional not physical. It took me a while to recognize/admit it. But once I did its very freeing. I've lost 85 pounds past 15 months using fasting and discerning what was driving the hunger

Eating a donut before dinner probably cause you to eat more. One thing I realized when I was busy at work and just ate apples for snacks, thinking they were healthy, I just felt more hungry than ever. Fasting was a way better option when busy.

I was so much thinner when younger because I didn’t snack I was too busy and it wasn’t around .. now that’s what it is it’s entertaining something to do .. hard to keep busy plus now it it’s more of a addiction now .

OMG I can't agreed more that if I don't so anything engaging or I sit in front of computer/TV, I will be eating way more and I will feel hungry. When I am engaged in some work I don't even feel hungry and I surprise myself looking at the clock that I haven't thought about eating when I normally do.

We're a generation of addicts. No more. I switched to two meals per day, no exceptions, no matter how miserable I feel. I just drink coffee when I crave something. Bigger meals, lower total daily calories, and barely any carbs at all. Feels great.

I wasn’t super overweight but I wanted to drop some pounds. The biggest change I made was not snacking. It was hard at first but now I can really see the difference and seeing family over the holidays I can see how much they all snack. It’s fascinating.

A major cause of obesity that no one is talking about is medications. Many medications, especially those used to treat things like depression, can cause major weight gain, even if a person is restricting calories and exercising. I would like to know how to treat this kind of weight gain.

I used to get headaches whenever I didn't eat for a few hours. Dieticians kept telling me I need to eat 6 small meals a day to loose weight, I felt hungry and terrible all the time. Fasting and Intermittent fasting are saving my life.
Fasting is amazing, even though I'm still obese, I'm loosing weight and my skin is so smooth.
I'm currently on day 11 of a prolonged water fast.

A part that I think is missing, and it is a big part, is the importance of how processed foods are addictive. Someone who lives on processed foods gets hungry the same way someone who smokes a lot craves a cigarette all the time. They are an addict! We don't grab for a muffin because it is easy. Nuts are easy. A hunk of cheese is easy. But nuts and cheese don't satisfy, in the ultra short term, our addiction.
Spot on about the highly processed snacks, I used to grab them all the time.
