Fun fact, despite not having obvious wings, Dragonair is known to fly around in both the anime and the manga. There's even one episode in the anime mentioning the reason Dragonair can fly is utilizing the move "Dragon Dance" which may just be an anime only canon. In Japanese their names have nothing to do with lair or air though. Dratini is called "Miniryu" which Mini = mini and ryu comes from 竜 which means dragon in Japanese. This is the only one that has an English name of the same meaning. Dragonair is called "Hakuryu" which cames from 白竜 (White Dragon) Dragonite is called "Kairyu" which comes from 海竜 (Sea Dragon)
In the second movie, we see that Dragonair's wings are actually right there, masquerading as it's ears! It looked a little weird to me as a kid, but now I think it looks very majestic

I love the reason behind Gyarados' name. "Oh, we don't have a specific origin for this name. We just thought it sounded strong." Which, fair to them. Gyarados is, in my opinion, one of the strongest Water types out there. I absolutely love this thing, which means I'm excited to catch my first Magikarp. Also, the Magikarp seller isn't a scam to me. Sure, I can catch a Magikarp for free later, but this is the earliest you can get this thing, and thus the fastest way to get Gyarados in Kanto (sadly, not before Brock, especially since my go-to starter is Charmander, but that's okay, because Charmander learns Metal Claw).
@@Lycan4 I think that the “Gya-” comes from Godzilla’s roar. The official onomatopoeia for which is “Gyaoon”. Gyarados’s dorsal fins also look just like Godzilla’s. Not to mention the cut Pokémon Gyaoon.

Back during Gen 1, I remember seeing a comment in Nintendo Power saying that Pidgeot is supposed to be pronounced like _pid-jit._ To this day, I stubbornly stick to that pronunciation whenever I say it.
the dra in seadra's name actually comes from dragon because it's called the dragon Pokemon and also a hint at it gaining the dragon typing when it evolves into kingdra in gen 2
Itd be cool to hear about the real and mythical inspirations of the pokemon like ninetales being the nine tailed fox and vileplume having a rafflesia flower on its head and the abra line being allegedly based on uri geller
Interesting video, but maybe some research assistance with the language aspects could have benefited your video. You can't necessarily trust what you read online, or what the translation app spits out...
6:26 Macho actually means "male" in Spanish. In cases in which is used associated with strength (like "macho man"), it just means that the person is a super manly man
It can be seen a bit better looking at venusaur specifically its walk cycle tho you can argue they look more like toads than frogs. Also since the kanto starters are supposed to be animals you can find in a forest, a toad, a turtle and a salamander/lizard works better than a dinosaur
Vulpix presumably comes from the word vulpine, meaning foxlike and then the x from six most likely. It could also randomly be an x from fox, though if that were the case, it would more likely be called "Vulpox"

"Omanyte" and "ammonite" do not sound exactly the same to me; "a" and "o" make very different vowel sounds. The similarity is definitely a North American lilt, with the closed "a" sound common to many American accents. Its obviously a play on the word, yes, but they don't sound alike to my ears.

@PaPaSea . Electrode is named after and electric diode. Not explode . A diode connects electricity and lets it flow in a single direction . The Genghis Khan reference is more than likely due to the fact that he was rumored to have many many many many many children to his name.
Rapidash also obviously has "dash" in its name, because it can run really fast. So it has "rapid", "dash", and "ash" in its name.
Cloyster is also a homonym for "cloister", which is a noun for a surrounded area or a verb meaning to seclude. It's a perfect name.
