  • Raven's Messed Up Backstory Hits Different As An Adult: Analyzing Her Major Daddy Issues...
    All of us have a favorite character in Teen Titans, but you gotta admit, Raven is one of the most intriguing characters when it comes to favorites. And that’s probably because of her pretty messed up origin story. Raven had one of the toughest childhoods out of any of the Titans, and that’s saying something considering most superhero and sidekick origin stories begin with tragedy. Raven sort of takes the cake though because her torment was something that followed her throughout her life as we all saw in Teen Titans.

    I personally love the nostalgic hit when I remember the stuff I used to watch as a kid, (and actually, when you look back, it makes a lotta sense why we turned out the way we did. Product of our environment sorta say). So if you're one of those geeks who loves cartoons and talking about the pointless details in them, I welcome you to our tribe.

    Raven is exactly how you create a strong and compelling female protagonist. Every other idiot studio, like Disney would do well to pay attention to her popularity.

      When you look at female characters that people like you see the pattern: Raven, Moana, Rapunzel, Mulan, Isabella, Luisa, Mirabelle, Ashoka.
      All of these have flaws. Every. Single. One. Raven is closed off from people as a flaw, Moana is slightly egotistical as a flaw, Rapunzel is naive, Mulan is self conscious, Isabella is a people pleaser, Luisa and Mirabelle also follow that pattern, Ashoka is too brash and doesn’t listen to her master. As you can see from teen titans to Star Wars the pattern is having a good flaw, a good fight the protagonist must face. This is often why people don’t like heroes like Captain Marvel but love Natasha Romanoff, why people hate Rey Skywalker but love Ashoka, why people dislike Asha and love Mirabelle. They feel like people because they act like people. They have struggles and flaws and those flaws are connected to their stories in many ways. Raven is closed off because of her father’s influence and lack of real friends her whole life, Moana is egotistical in some ways because she’s the daughter of the chief of the village, Rapunzel is naive because she’s never seen the outside world before, Mulan is self conscious because she’s been told her only worth comes from her looks, Isabella, Luisa and Mirabelle are people pleasers because of Abuela and Ashoka is brash because she has Anakin as her Jedi master and is 16. All of these characters have a flaw that makes sense due to their story, one they don’t completely overcome but do improve and a rounded out personality. There’s a reason people make hour long analysis videos on Ashoka or Mirabelle’s journey, but never one on Rey or Asha. It’s because they don’t really HAVE a journey outside of the plot and they do things… because plot. We don’t understand what it means to them, why it means this to them or what they’re afraid of losing if they go into the unknown. We don’t understand what the other characters mean to them etc. Whereas you can go on and on about how Ashoka or Mirabelle learns their lessons about themselves and relationships and flaws for hours you could talk about Rey for as long as you can talk about the plot of movie and same with Asha. Their character IS the plot.

    Raven had such a taggic back story. I grew up with the show and watched every episode with my dad. I never realized how deep it was. Now i see why my dad loved the show. This version needs to come back. Literally Starfire and Raven had a freaky Friday theme episode.

    i honestly don't think raven would've done as well as she did, if she never met the teen titans and FINALLY gain the courage to defeat her dad once and for all. also, it's really nice to see raven look so happy and smile every now and then.

    Nevermore has to be my favorite Raven episode. Seeing how her emotions affect the strength of her powers. She loves her friends, but it makes sense why she acts the way she does.
    If her powers go out of control, it could be disastrous, and she doesnt want that.

    Watching the episodes where they dealt with Raven's backstory as a kid was so heart breaking. I LOVED Raven and still do she was and is amazing. Watching her struggle and seeing why Raven was so closed off while she very clearly loved her friends. The OG Teen Titans was and will always be the best in my eyes. ❤️ love the video

    I've always had a loathing for people that treat the offspring of This or That as being just as guilty of crimes committed or vile opinions and mindset as their parents(like that priest). A child does not choose to whom they are born. By treating the innocent child as they would the guilty parent, they only risk creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. 'If everyone believes that I am a monster no matter what I say or do, then why not BE the monster?'
    (SPOILERS)
    Granted it's a bit more complicated in Raven's particular case, as she'd become The Portal eventually no matter what kind of person she grew up to become, but as we-the-audience saw, she very much so was not bound by her origins to be an evil being. She fought evil wherever and whenever she could.

    I still remember how bad i felt during the entire arc of the show when i was a kid, it looked so hopeless ,like when Cyborg uses his ultimate attack, using the energy of the entire tower and all that it does is...Nothing, just for the end of this nightmare to come in the form of Raven bringing all the hope back.

  • @pamelaprice7163
    @pamelaprice7163 2 месяца назад +3

    Great video. I'm just a little confused as to Raven's backstory that you're telling? (Please totally correct me, because I know the cartoon well but I know very little about the 80s comics or the TT film that came out in 2016). Are you mixing different backstories? For example, you start out by saying that Trigon wants Raven to rule next to him, but then you talk about the episode where Raven was intended to die so he could come to earth. That seems super contradictory.
    I hope this doesn't come across as rude or anything! I just wanted to pick your brain and understand a bit more. Thanks for reading my long comment ^_^

    • @AngryShuckie
      @AngryShuckie Месяц назад

      Yeah, the video mixes the two versions, and in the comics Raven acts more like Trigon's general when she goes evil. I don't recall the cartoon giving that much detail about her back-story, probably because it's too dark to put in a kids show.
      For a bit of comics background: "The End" episodes are a very good adaptation of the Terror of Trigon arc in the comics (issues 1-5 in The New Teen Titans volume 2, from way back in 1984). They are worth a read if you are able to, though they hit hardest after seeing Raven's metal health deteriorate over the whole of volume 1. Imagine instances like the "Nevermore" episode where she loses control and accidentally hurt Dr Light, happening with increasing frequency, coupled with her increasing isolation like in the "Spellbound" episode... only without a talking book to help her through depression and loneliness. Needless to say the cartoon skipped over a lot of the trauma Trigon put her through!

    The question I've always asked is whether or not Raven was a,machine built by her father or kidnapped and abused by him?.

    • @AngryShuckie
      @AngryShuckie Месяц назад

      She is his biological child, so neither. The TV show didn't go much into her demonic side, probably because it would be too dark for a kids' show, but she is nevertheless a half-demon.
      Similarly the trauma he puts her through is toned down a lot in the show, and it doesn't take much for her to give in and act as the portal for him to Earth. In the comics that process was slow and horrifying, so he definitely counts as abusing her.
