This is my 6 y/o son current favourite song from Polyphia next to Playing God. This is his recent every morning music request in the car on our way to his school!:)
Aww. That’s nice! Not sure if he’s heard of a band called Chon. I highly recommend it, it’s like poliphia. I’d recommend watching their AudioTree session to appreciate their musicianship.
I see a lot of people talking down LIT but I’ve listened to both a large number of times and I appreciate the sound from both LIT and LIGHT. I think it’s just because people have different tastes so they think one is superior to the other, but they both sound gorgeous to my ears and I’m pretty happy they experimented and tried to change up the way LIT sounded compared to this one. : )
It’s fine to appreciate music the way it is, besides sometimes different music styles have something in common, making them linear, but a little independent. 🤙🤘
This song saved me when I was totally drowned, in some many different ocasions, it was a real light at the end of the tunnel of my existence... Thank you!
The song, Light by Polyphia, a melodic djent band, is a great example of how classical music theory can be used to analyze any type of music. The song starts off with a variation of the main melody or a motive. This motive is ended then thrown directly into a key change with a change of the rhythmic dictation as well. The song continues with one of two of the main melodic ideas in the piece till the lead guitar comes in and is another variation of the past sub-phrase. These two sub-phrases being in the same key and using the same chord to display one whole idea, creates a phrase. Once the main melody is played through, the musical sentence, or period, ends abruptly and is put into a soft, atmospheric color. A hefty bassline comes through the ambiance and is the only independent variable while the lead guitar dictates when the rest of the instruments come in as they all play in sync. The main period or chorus of the piece is played again then this time the lead guitar is allowed to play through the ambiance and stretches out the chord from the last verse of the piece with an arpeggio, maintaining a soft, quiet atmosphere. The chorus is played a few times through again and the piece ends.
For a second I thought I dozed off while trying to read your comment.. sorry man. Haha. Also, by labelling Polyphia as _"Djent"_; it's kind of insulting to those heavier bands with a flair of originality to their sound. A lot of the key elements used by _"Djent"_ bands' that set their music apart from the mundane are missing in Polyphia's songs - Manipulation of time through the use of Alternating Meters, Polymeters, and Rhythmic Displacement... dissonant riffs influenced by Death- or Math- bands... low tunings! These are the missing elements that readily come to mind. I think I get what you're referencing; the quiet palm-muting often heard in the background of their music set to half-time rhythms - but you can borrow a single playing technique without becoming defined by it. EDIT: On second thoughts, wasn't Polyphia's old music heavier?? Perhaps that's what you're referencing..?? it's been a few years since they played in that style though - so naturally, as I'm not a fan, I forgot about that. I guess it's fair to label their early music as _"Melodic Djent"_. That label certainly doesn't fit any more though... Peace
Pete Guajardo Not trying to sound like a douche here, but I found your comment quite interesting but however I do not believe there is a variation in the rhythmic dictation of light, it is pretty consistent throughout the song. Also how is the bass an independent variable? I didn't know that I was taking a chem class. haha sorry just made me lol cause I took a theory class about a year ago, have a nice day.

As much as I love LIT, I'm glad I got to see them play Light when they opened for coheed a few years back. Seeing this and Sweet Tea live is what got me to dive deep into them
Good feels in this one! :) I was a little disappointed on how much they slowed down from Inspire and Muse but I if you're into rock/blues this is pretty good!
The main hook * always sounded familiar to me but could never put my finger on it... Finally did. It reminds me of the "Thanks for the memories" chorus by Fallout Boy. Same melody! * the part that repeats twice at 0:21, 0:30, 1:29, 1:38, 3:06 and 3:15
+Christian Camacho If you're talking about the thing at like 00:39 then I've seen bands make that sound by sort of tapping the tremolo bar on a floyd rose bridge and letting it spring back making that crazy fluttery noise. How Polyphia does it, I'm not sure, that's just how I've seen a similar affect done by bands like Rings of Saturn, etc.
Hey guys, I'm beginner guitarist. I have a question regarding the tone of the song. Which settings do I need to use to achieve this sound, I now that there are two guitars laying in parallel, however my guitar still sounds just like a guitar. I would like to get some advices!
It crazy how these riffs actually are the lyrics. Sometimes I actually hear words.
Lay off the weed man
That really is a big part of what makes Polyphia so magic, well said
Exactly!
