When I was a kid, we had something called “scratch art” (I think). It was multi-colored paper covered with black. To draw, you would use toothpicks or something to scratch the black off, and then you’d have a multi-colored drawing. It wasn’t quite the same, but sort of similar. You could buy the paper at the store, but my art teacher also taught us how to make it ourselves (I don’t remember how).
I'm extremely old and grew up poor so my parents never bought us art supplies, but in elementary school our teacher had us fill a piece of paper with crayons then cover it with a black crayon. It would take forever. Then we'd use our nails or whatever we could find to scratch off the black crayon wax to reveal the rainbow of colors underneath. As I said we were poor and I didn't have much toys or art supplies so I would spend hours doing this all the livelong day. Now I spend hours on social media. 🤷🏻♀️
I love scratch board art. The easiest way to "sketch" is by indent. Basically sketch on a normal piece of paper. When you're happy with the design. Place it over the board and use a ball point pen to trace the design with a bit of a heavy hand. You will get indents of the sketch without accidentally scratching the board or having to deal with lead transfer. It's much easier that way. I don't know if that is really the easiest way to do it but that was how I learned.
For the 1% that are reading this, I hope you are safe and happy. You are blessed and never have to go through anything alone. Keep on keepin’ on. Have a great day!!
Who else is absolutely in *love* with Rin's funny little voices that she always does?💖 Thank you so much Rin for commenting on my fan art video! You have no idea how much I love youuuu 🥺
Becky Mae I hadn’t thought of it either cause initially I thought the scratching would be uncomfortable but then I got started and suddenly it’s seven hours later and I was feeling amazing
I started watching waffles just before quarantine and I don’t regret it, before I started to watch her I would just draw weird stick people but then when I started to watch her I started to draw. At first I was just kind of doing it when ever and just using a pencil and some colored pencils I randomly found, but soon I started to actually buy stuff for my art and I gradually grew better, I found a medium I like and I found an art style I liked and now I understand why everyone loves doing art! A lot of fun and if waffles didn’t inspire me to start doing art I think I would have lived the rest of my like drawing stick figures. If you’re reading this waffles (which you probably aren’t) I want to say thank you and that you have changed my life :)
Me: on the verge of wanting to rip my ears off because the sound of the scratching Also me: bears through it because waffles is making god tier art/content.
I LOVE THIS MEDIUM !!! It's so satisfying scratching away at the paper, i like using the paper that has a rainbow gradient underneath instead of just white cuz you never know what color will be underneath heheh
I used to do the rainbow scratching thing, but I've made with crayons! You just need to make layers of random colors than cover everything with black :)just don't color with a lot of pressure or the other colors won't stick to it
one time in primary school, we mixed black ink with eggs and painted magazines with it and then scratched it to create easter egg drawings. It was sort of like this
If I remember that right, there's a whole group of techniques that work more or less like that called grattage (at least in my native German) works with dried acrylics and black crayon over that, too :)
I absolutely love your artwork, you're one of my favorite artists ever and you inspire me to draw everyday, I love watching your videos and I always draw with you while watching them, I feel like I'm a little less alone when I do that, you're an amazing artist and your style is so beautiful and unique ♥️ I'm not sure if this is ever gonna get to you but I just wanted to put it out there anyways and tell you to keep up with your amazing work ♥️
Woahhh okay this is crazy!! Im in an ink and scratchboard class right now, and we start learning on Monday! Its also my first time so seeing this vid was a lovely coincidence :))
I got goosebumps from the scratchy noises but even that wasn't enough to stop me from watching all the way till the end!!! Great work as always, keep it up, love the channel!!!
I had the same thought, this was a hard one to keep the sound on for lol! Beautiful art, I love Rin's style so much :) but I think this was the only video I ever muted of hers XD
Waffles I seriously don’t think you know how much you’ve inspired/ impacted my art journey, I’m currently doing and drawing things I’ve never thought possible. Thank you so much 🧇

The other day I realized what I liked so much about waffles and her channel (apart from the great art obviously) and it was that Waffles isn’t afraid to show her mistakes and show that she is still learning. That’s really reassuring to me because a lot of art channels feel more “perfect” and it kinda bums me out, because I start thinking that they are on a whole other unreachable level. With waffles though, I feel like I’m learning and getting better, and helps to keep going. Thank you so much for everything, Rin. We love you
Okay so even though u don't know anything about the art supply....u end up making a masterpiece......dat not fair 😂. Love you so so much Rin. Keep up ur amazing work❤️❤️❤️
Am I the only one who runs to grab some paper and pencil everytime a DrawingWiffWaffles video drops? Somehow, her voice sparks the art muscle in my body. I just finished drawing a character. You inspire me to draw😁
I did these when I was younger at a youth group night! we were waiting for our tie dye shirts to....finish, or whatever, so our youth group leader gave us this little boards except instead of white, it was rainbow when you erased. baby me was *very* impressed ngl
I remember doing something like this when I was little probably around fourth or fifth grade when introduced to this medium. I learned that you need to have a steady hand and go at it slow. I can back to this medium in my art class I learned from there how to transfer the design I wanted on to the tile and go from there. I like I said earlier it's something to practice with, and it takes a while to get used to.
I ended up drawing a girl based on sunflowers! She’s more like a gardener than like a flower girl, but I really like how she’s turning out! Thanks for the inspiration ;)
Yesterday I finished my sketchbook..... and today I ordered a new one online. It may take a while to arrive 😭..... and now as I’m rewatching your videos .... and you say say “ grab your sketchbook and draw along with me!” AAAAHHHHHH!!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭it’s so sad...... Oh, it's really cool to see a better quality version of these for original art! I've always enjoyed the engraving art kits, but they're generally pre-printed, and I've never seen any that came with correcting ink. I've made homemade variations with crayons when I was a kid.

Her work is so amazing.... She inspired me to open up my own RUclips channel recently with anime art content in it.... But I don't have much people engaging yet so that I can start up making a fun community
I used to do this all the time when my sister was in the hospital for a burn I had to go with as they would be there all day and the man in the fun waiting room gave me a Christmas set of it as in it literally had santa Claus and a reindeer and you had to scratch it out with different techniques
In my sophomore year, we had a scratch board unit and I was so insecure about my ability in the beginning, but it gets so much more fun as you get used to it! I made my own makeshift little stippling needle and i used it to do a portrait and in the end it became the piece I'm most proud of from that year.
Can i just say, I love that your videos have subtitles, and not just the default ones. Great for not native speakers but also for ppl in the Deaf community ❤️🤟
this is so pretty! i love and admire how you can just look at another artists' work and just copy it for a study! you really inspire me and i hope you and your family are doing well!
I've used skratch board supplies back when I was a junior in high school for art class. I did TOP from Big Bang and used blue watercolor for his hair after I scratched the area. It was my favorite project💕
I had a teacher in middle school that had us make our own scratch paper by coloring the page with crayons and then painting over the crayon with india ink. Then you can scratch the india ink away and the crayon color was still left underneath. Fun to do, I can't imagine getting good at it though O_O
I just got my new alcohol markers and im soo excited! You inspired half of my art journey Rin thank you💜💜 i improved my art because of you, i would not be able to get this far without you💜💜keep up the good work💜💜
Hey Rin, love this vid! Whenever I’m looking for new art supplies to try, I always come to you. Hope you’re doing okay during this pandemic❤️❤️. Edit: Could you possibly make a video regarding how you sketch eyes and the different shapes? Everyone like the comment so she can see! 😁
In primary school art class we did something similar, and in year seven too. Basically we got oil pastels and put colours and stuff on the page, then we painted over in in black and when it dried, we used toothpicks to scratch away the black and make colourful lines. It was really fun!
Hey DrawingWiffWaffles! Whilst watching one of your videos, I have thought of a really good idea, where you should create some sort of art piece, using all of your ScrawlerBox stickers! ❤️
Hello Waffles! You are such an inspiration to my friend and I! We love coloring your coloring pages with Ohuhus that you recommended to us! Any chance you will make more coloring pages? Love you!
The professional version of those scratch rainbow notebook you can get that. You know the ones with rainbow paper gradient underneath and weird black layer you scratch off with a wooden stick.
I did this in art class in middle school I drew a bunny very fun and I still have it, since I know you struggle a lot with inverted colors try googling or editing a photo for reference that’s already inverted that way you can follow it more naturally and pick up on the little stuff over time! You got tons of skill n it’s nice watching you struggle because it encourages other artists to not give up and teaches that talent isn’t everything and even the best need to practice.
This gives me flashbacks to that time I had to use a scratch board in middle school art class but it rubbed against my binder in my backpack and messed it up and I never recovered
This was reminding me of something- and then I realized like halfway through. Did anyone else have those little scratch books, where it was solid black, but you’d take a wooden toothpick like thing and scratch away to reveal a rainbow fairy or something. Like I want to say, early 2010s is when those were a thing. I had them when I was like seven or smthn, and this just brought back memories that those were a thing. I can’t remember for the life of me what they were called, and I don’t know if anyone else had them. I don’t see them at all anymore, but that could also be because I’m not looking. Does anyone have any ideas on what they were called? Did anyone else even have them as a kid?
"Engraving Art" is what the packaging says for one I have. I think I found it at Target or Michael's a few years ago. I bought some because I remembered doing them with my nieces when they were in grade school.
Yeah, know nothing about scratching art that is not already precolored underneath. Fascinating to see Rin adapt so fast to her art supplies, some she has no experience with. Thanks for experimenting for us Rin! 🤗♥️👍🏾💯
you make me look forward to saturdays, I absolutely lovveeevev your art 🖼, and your a great person ,you have no idea how much I loooooooove youuuuuuuu🥺🥺🥺
My really artistic sister adored when she did scratch art as was able to make amazing things with these supplies! A tip she gave me is to do small, simple strokes (like dot art) to make a image. Use the black to your advantage, and avoid too many pure white areas. Hope this helps if you ever try to use this supply again
i've been watching you for years and the amount of joy I always have when I see you upload is unrivaled. you've always been entertaining and I appreciate that you always do your best with supplies that you would've never experienced instead of giving up. you're an inspiration to me and you have been for years. seeing you grow has been an awesome experience

We did it with crayons haha the colourful part did get pretty pastel if the scratches were deep
Wax crayons and black gouache yes. Doesn't work with oily paints. (RUclips wanted me to say oily pants.)
I remember to 2000's or 90s lol
We draw on a paper with crayon, and then painted over with acrylic paint mixed with soap

yes, that is how i was taught to do it,
I was taught that way, but also by putting chalk on the bottom of the sketch paper because it creates a faint line that's easier to see than an indent
Ashley Klaves 😭 might have to try it again
@kayl a i think so all tho print making requires more carving skills right, but it the same concept drawing in reverse

I used to get pre-made versions of these with animals already designed on them, I just had to scratch away the pattern, It's really fun.
yes! i always did these! i didnt know it was an actual art form though haha
My dad did a few, and the one I remember watching him do a part of it, was a wolf that he hung up on the wall.

I normally rewatch Waffles videos but I couldn’t with the latest charcoal one because of this same thing! The nails on a chalkboard thing is torturous
Just mute it you can still see the art y'know
I know I have the same problem with scratching noises it drives me insane.🥵
I feel odd bc it seems like everyone disliked the sound but I actually liked it soooooo :/

I've used skratch board supplies back when I was a junior in high school for art class. I did TOP from Big Bang and used blue watercolor for his hair after I scratched the area. It was my favorite project💕
I always say I'm going to draw along but then just end up watching all her videos I haven't watched yet....
The amount of SHEAR PUNS in this video is amazing and you can’t convince me otherwise
You inspired half of my art journey Rin thank you💜💜 i improved my art because of you, i would not be able to get this far without you💜💜keep up the good work💜💜
i'm flattered to be a part of your art journey! 💜💜 glad we can share this together! Keep bringing art into this world! I'm so proud of you!
@@drawingwiffwaffles thank you💜💜 its an honor
Hey Rin, love this vid! Whenever I’m looking for new art supplies to try, I always come to you. Hope you’re doing okay during this pandemic❤️❤️.
Edit: Could you possibly make a video regarding how you sketch eyes and the different shapes? Everyone like the comment so she can see! 😁
In primary school art class we did something similar, and in year seven too. Basically we got oil pastels and put colours and stuff on the page, then we painted over in in black and when it dried, we used toothpicks to scratch away the black and make colourful lines. It was really fun!
Use this as a "watched all the way through and didn't skip anything" button
Hey DrawingWiffWaffles! Whilst watching one of your videos, I have thought of a really good idea, where you should create some sort of art piece, using all of your ScrawlerBox stickers! ❤️
hewo do you have any tips to draw semi realism? I've always wanted to draw in that style!
use references and just simplify some parts. thats like the most broken down answer but its true. other then that it takes time. stick with it.
@@drawingwiffwaffles ok thank you so much!
when I was younger I use to always use the Scratch board art it was super fun!
YESSSS I LOVE YOUUUU
hope you enjoy the video!! 💜
@@drawingwiffwaffles I definitely did! Great job! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Haha first youtube video I'm going to watch today. 😂😂💜
wahoo, i'm first! XP
Same
@@drawingwiffwaffles 💜😂
i’m also so happy when she uploads. i’ve nearly watched all of her videos in a month 😅😂
This gives me flashbacks to that time I had to use a scratch board in middle school art class but it rubbed against my binder in my backpack and messed it up and I never recovered
I just love the energy rin always give in her videos, and ofc the beautiful art👍🏻
Who thinks she needs a diamond play button Like if you thinks does 😉🧚🏻♀️
You mean like "her "video 😉
👍
Yes new video! I hope everyone is having a great day so far!
Catalie mew early 2010s?!? I used those all the time with I was a kid in the early 90s!!! I’m feeling really old now 😂
Amy C. Well I’m a teen, so it had to be early 2010s or late 2000s for me, but they were probably around much earlier than that.
Yeah, know nothing about scratching art that is not already precolored underneath. Fascinating to see Rin adapt so fast to her art supplies, some she has no experience with. Thanks for experimenting for us Rin! 🤗♥️👍🏾💯
Love your style ❤️ owo
I love drawing wiff waffles.... that’s all I have to say.❤️
you make me look forward to saturdays, I absolutely lovveeevev your art 🖼, and your a great person
,you have no idea how much I loooooooove youuuuuuuu🥺🥺🥺
Rin: “Now it looks like there’s a ton of blood on it mouth. I’m no that type of artist!”
Kasey: Well you know, I really like it!
Scratchboards were my childhood. Every time I go would on a family vacation, my grandparents would get me a scratchboard set to do art with.
last time i was this early i was actually able to go outside
I love scratch art! I used to do it a lot more when I was younger, I usually did animals or flowers and it was very soothing
hi there
you've probably been scrolling for a while if you're seeing this
This was actually the fourth comment.
This was actually the second comment..lol😂
This was actually the third comment .....😂🤣
Hi!
This was actually the 20th comment
My really artistic sister adored when she did scratch art as was able to make amazing things with these supplies! A tip she gave me is to do small, simple strokes (like dot art) to make a image. Use the black to your advantage, and avoid too many pure white areas. Hope this helps if you ever try to use this supply again
When you try to be early but you end up sleeping in even though you told yourself that you would wake up early to watch waffles videos: *oh frick*
i've been watching you for years and the amount of joy I always have when I see you upload is unrivaled. you've always been entertaining and I appreciate that you always do your best with supplies that you would've never experienced instead of giving up. you're an inspiration to me and you have been for years. seeing you grow has been an awesome experience
