My family in Glasgow were there for that performance. In the scene where Cyrano detains DeGuice as the man who fell from the moon, he “disguised” his voice in a proper Glaswegian accent which the audience raucously approved of!

I saw this in Glasgow and it is an incredible play. Truly phenomenal. At one point McAvoy almost fell backwards off the chair and he broke character very slightly with a little nervous giggle. The place erupted into laughter. It made that performance that little bit more memorable. Hometown boy done good!

"you're sounding affy english". Of course I still got shit in England for sounding Scottish. Then in my late 20s I moved to the USA where everyone just loves my weird hybrid english/scottish accent lol. Ive lived here 8 years now. So, as someone who comes from a place with a distinct accent, I’m curious if the phrase “gone well English” is a criticism, a criticism but one that is all in good fun, or simply being descriptive without judgment.
For context, I’m from Mississippi and one of aunts used to call me the family yankee because of how I speak. It wasn’t exactly a compliment, as I believe she thought that I was putting on airs.

I’m Greenock (about 25 miles down the coast from Glasgow) and he has definitely gone well English!!
And it’s most definitely not a compliment!! Most Scottish still hold some dislike for some English, because they look down on us and believe the hearsay that we don’t contribute anything to the UK (which has been proven over and over again to be totally untrue!!).
I find it very easy to calm my accent when I worked in parts over England, but it was always temporary. James accent is permanently changed because he doesn’t live in Scotland anymore.
      Sorry!! Long explanation!! xx

    • @BadgerUKvideo
      @BadgerUKvideo 2 года назад +2

@@TheBonny720 King James was Scottish. The union of crowns was setup by a Scottish monarch. Scotland needed the English navy to protect it's trade and teaming up with France to fight the English wasn't a viable long term strategy.
France were bigger than England but having the sea to act as a buffer meant that England could nearly always have enough space to occasionally send armies to Scotland. The backstabs just weren't that effective.
Alliance was the smart option and without the Scottish the British empire would not have been anywhere near as significant. Not only in a military capacity but also civilian. Some of Britain's best minds were Scottish, raised in Scottish universities.
To remove Britishness from the Scots is just as egregious as removing it from the English. Scotland isn't like Ireland. They didn't fight English rule like the Irish did. There was a war in the 12th century where England had managed to use a claim on the Scottish throne but other than that it's just been back and forth until we allied.
To be fair, some of the most famous "English" vs "Scottish" battles were more like "borders" vs "highland". That is horrifically over simplifying it but the point stands.
English vs Scottish will likely always be a healthy rivalry but the Scottish are British. They spilled as much blood as any Welsh long bowman or English pilot. When a Brit imagines a member of the SAS they're likely thinking of a Scot.
And don't tell me that when you hear Scotland the Brave blasting out on the bagpipes you don't imagine red coats appearing through the gun smoke.
Although, i'm 3/4 Scottish, 1/4 Welsh, Irish clan name, raised English, and living in Scotland. So union biased.

"I didn't realise you had such a pronounced Scottish accent. I had only seen you play either Americans or British people."
Got to be picky here. Scottish people ARE British. So are the Welsh, and the English. And those on a few islands scattered about the large island which is Great Britain. People on the island of Ireland are not British - even those in the North which is part of the UK. Hence the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
You had only seen him play, "American or English people."
    I'm neither.
But it was great to see someone articulate the depths and themes and artistic changes of the play. Too often either some host will interrupt, or the actor (usually a movie actor) has absolutely no way of describing the project they're on the show to promote. McAvoy is excellent in this manner. And Colbert generally lets his guests talk, too.

I've got to say as a Glaswegian I'm disappointed in James McAvoy's attitude to Glasgow. Him acting like his accent isn't typical of Glasgow is sad because it's simply untrue. It bothers me how so many people play up to this attitude that everyone from the city speaks with a thick accent that no one else understands. It goes hand in hand with the dehuminising attitude that all Glasgwegians are angry, drunk, junkies, who eat greasy food and get in fights. It gets really old.

I like both James and Stephen. They are both great. But I do agree with Stephen about Scottish accent sounding like speech impediment. I don't understand why British people speak with accent. usually people have accent because their primary language is not English so when they speak English as second language you can detect accent. But British people only speak English...and with such thick accent that honestly I find it annoying and have to turn on subtitles if I watch their movies. And lot of Americans find British accent cute....I don't get it. what's cute about not able to hear someone speak clearly.
