Jim, what a creative idea. I didn't think that stuff was worth turning at all as it's a HUGE weed in my area. Glad to see you can make it into something beautiful especially with some Designer Epoxy and your creativity.
I love the patterns created when you turned this combination of wood and resin, Jim. Once again your excellent choice of form really shows off the grain of the wood. I’d like to see a piece using the filled centers process turned with a reverse curve - wider at the top and bottom and narrower in the middle. I think this would show off more of the colored resin in the centers.
Once again, Jim, you snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! Perseverance paid off with you and a lucky buyer ending up with an intriguing and beautiful piece. Bravo! (insert applause here) I once owned a house with sumac on the property here in Utah. It was a pain to deal with! Beautiful in the fall, but I hated the little sprouts that popped up all over the yard. It was a constant battle to keep it under control. At least you can make some really cool stuff with it!
Another amazing piece Jim. Perfect choice for colors in the resin. Really like the colors and grain patterns of the sumac. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Hey Jim Ian from Liverpool here, again just another fantastic piece. the contrast between the black and the red is really quite spectacular 👌 Keep them coming it's the highlight of my week switching on and seeing what you create. All the best 👍
I love the shape and the beautiful colors on this one! The different shapes are fascinating. I really like hearing your thoughts on your move and look forward to anything you produce on the workshop and planning for it. Thanks!
I can't wait to see the new house!! I also love the new look this week, and it's wonderful that you don't limit yourself as an artist. I am also an artist and photographer, I was always taught to let your piece tell you what it wants to be. That's another reason why I love watching you.
At first I didn't think I would like the black but as it turned I started changing my mind. The Egyptian shape is really jumps for me. Nice piece and without Designer Epoxy this would not be possible.
Missed the premier this week. Very nice vase! Love the branches and the inlays. The colors are great as well. Hope you had a great weekend. Designer Epoxy
Mr.jim you get an A for awesome. This one is beautiful. Probably the prettiest one I have seen you turn. Sometimes a hick up turns in some thing amazing
Jim, this is so beautiful! I have a couple hints. Try pouring a thin layer of clear Designer Epoxy in your bucket. Let it ALMOST set up and then put your pieces in and let it finish curing. To fill the centers tape a piece of rubber tubing (just smaller than the hole) to the end of your syringe. Slowly push the epoxy in as you retract the tube. It may save you time and aggravation. Thanks for sharing your artistic talents 😊
This is an amazing footed vase, It looks like it has a painted design on it! If I would see it in a shop I would be looking up close to make sure it is real!! So beautiful! It is a beautiful and amazing vase! Beautiful!! Designer Epoxy
I love how you don't know what you are going to do with a piece until you start turning it. You let the piece "speak" to you. I think that is why all your pieces are so incredible. And designer Epoxy is amazing to work with...I love all the colors.
That is a really nice one, the wood almost looks golden from some angles and yellowish from others but has the chatoyance there too, the contrasting dark black also looks blueish from some angles and helps make the wood stand out more. Didn't think the red would stand out as much until you put that first clear coat of resin on but that always makes your pieces 'pop' lol 👍
@@SpragueWoodturning your more than welcome, it was you that turned it afterall lol I know that sometimes the resin and wood etc acts in unexpected ways and sometimes not the best way and I know that sometimes the shape of the turning might not be the best to bring out the best in the different elements in your works and sometimes you surprise yourself and that comes over too lol I'd definitely be holding onto the offcut of that first stage though, whether to make a lid or a plate or cutting each one out like a puck to use in another piece (don't ask me what or how lol) but I'm sure something will come up where you think it'll compliment it and incorporate it into it lol. Good luck with your house move etc, looking forward to your next video and update etc.
This piece has a retro, lava lamp, Rorschach print, trippy kind of feel to it, I can't quite put my finger on it! I really love the foot on this with all of the different shapes of the sumac, and the lip at the top with the dripping blobs and circles. Maybe it's the colour scheme giving off this different vibe to pieces you've made before with this similar branch technique, I'm also getting wormhole, time travel, matter-being-compacted-through-temporal-space, just super warped cool vibes! Thanks Jim, this was a super fun watch!
Another very cool piece. As always, using the darker colors always resonates with me. So far as a larger workshop, more room = more toys to work with!!! Can't wait to see the new shop this fall.
I would love to see more or these, different colors, different shapes, etc. I especially love that they are made by sitting down a somewhat invasive species. designer epoxy
Greetings from New Hampshire! I have been at home all week recovering from a bout of Covid and have found that rewatching your videos to be the best medicine of all. 😀 I truly enjoy your amazing skill and artistic expression.
I love the colors and their contrasts, as well as the fact that you don't always know what you'll be doing until you're into the work. I make jewelry (in a class, as a hobby and not as a business ), and I often don't have a plan when I begin. Shapes and materials suggest themselves to me as I work. Fran
Love it Jim. Finally remembered and got here at the start. I wondered why you didn't drill from both ends but that would be the one where you have the long strip of epoxy not lining up in the center. Don't envy you packing up that house and shop at all.
Just an FYI red sumac real name is Staghorn. The red berries from Stanhorn is a great spice when ground. I imagine the berry corns could be used in canning and ferments also. But my favorite way to use it is as a cold tea. Its called lemon berry tea. You can add a bit of honey or maple syrup. Give it a try. Peace, Love and Freedom 🇺🇲
Pretty cool Jim! I didn’t realize Sumac glows as well, I have a few chunks of Black and Honey Locust and they glow as well under Uv or black light. Designer Epoxy
Turned out great, I would definitely love to see more sumac or similar small branch castings perhaps small red cedar. You will improve your processing and process and make it easier every time you do it.
I love the Sprague sumac videos! And I was just starting a sumac resin-charcuterie project yesterday, then found this video premiering a few hours later. Karma says my project will be good.

Really Kool Vase. I'd like to see what a sumac bush looks like before it's cut.
Great job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎
I will try to show the ones on my property sometime. Thanks
Love how rich the grain of the sumac shows up in contrast to the dark resin. The touch of highlights in the resin also adds character. Beautiful!

This was a fun one with the patterns formed by the branches.

Jim, you amaze me how you can take what some people would consider fire wood and turn it into a piece of beauty. Awesome.
Всё очень просто . Берёшь руками. И делаешь. А думать о том что не получится. Тогда не получится некогда. Нужно просто не бояться.

Beautiful vase. 😆 Ve the wat the growth rings stretch out around the curve of the outside. Beautiful designer epoxy as always.
