      @@user-tr4ej8mw4s I’ve given it some thought, and hypothetically I can’t see a problem with your statement. Practically however this shouldn’t really happen. A single race of people co-existing as multiple tribes in a single region will always develop a shared culture for obvious reasons. The differences between tribes in the same region is nothing more drastic than people from different cities supporting different football teams; they all support the same national team. Even a single race of people existing as separate tribes in two separate but ultimately similar regions usually develop culturally almost in parallel with one other. It takes centuries just for their language to reach to the point where the two people could not understand one another in conversation, by which point they would be classed as different races anyway.
      Actually there’s a point. If these harfoots were truly multicultural they’d all speak different languages, have different festivals, different music, different food. But like you say, “multicultural” as in fact a euphuism.

And racism is a form of ignorance and you can't be informed on ethnic groups and hold that ignorance usually.
      A tell tale sign for me is when people use (what I relate as American terms) black and white as identifiers of groups of people. It's over categorization and tells you nothing about a group as it contains too broad a base. And usually those using such reductionist measurements are stoking the flames of racial animosity.

    It was enough of a stretch in PJ's movies that the Shire had accents from different parts of England and Scotland (I don't remember any Welsh or Irish hobbits) but at least it was generally accepted that hobbits kept mostly to themselves and their families and had a great respect for tradition so it could follow that accents would remain from the first settlers of different hobbit breeds.
    If this series is going to suggest that an initially diverse group that isn't going to be massive could live together and not breed themselves beige without some sort of active segregation is going to take some explaining.

    • @RoseBaggins
      @RoseBaggins 2 года назад +5

      They did that because it was stated by Tolkien that the Hobbits represent the everyday Englishman. And since the Tooks live in a hilly part of the country which makes for great defenses, are stubborn, will put up a fight, and invented golf, it made sense they would be Scottish.

    • @InhabitantOfOddworld
      @InhabitantOfOddworld 2 года назад

      It wasn't just Peter Jackson who did that, the BBC radio play also made use of English regional accents for the Hobbits. Andy Serkis also used it for his readings of the Tolkien works, but to be fair, I think his performance was partly coloured by the New Line Cinema/Peter Jackson franchise and his role in it.
      I think there is a tacit understanding that Hobbits are a quintessentially English archetype, and as such, also sound the part.
      And as above, there were different genealogical lineages among the Hobbits, which could justify differing accents.
      You say that Hobbits are insular enough that they should remain almost genetically identical, and yet there was enough diversity in that regard such that the "Proudfoot" clan had exceptionally larger and hairier feet than most.
      Does is particularly make sense, when each Hobbit is likely first cousins with their neighbours? Probably not. But it's how Tolkien wrote the world.

    Just as Tolkien was creating a quasi-mythology for England due to much of it being lost, so it is that the locations on Middle Earth share some loose parallels to how the old English saw their world due to England's location in Europe and to the world in general.
    If you consider the Shire to feel the most like England (the idealized, romantic version of the English countryside) then you can observe the following: north of the Shire is mountainous, colder and barely inhabited (Scotland?); far away in the north-east come the northern men of Middle Earth and often where dragons were found (Nordic areas?); in the centre of Middle Earth (at least on the usual maps showing the western part) is Rohan whose people came from the north and east (Germanic peoples?); south-east there is Gondor and this was once the greatest kingdom of Men since Numenor yet much of the realm of Gondor appears Mediterranean, so perhaps this is a loose allusion to Ancient Greeks and the Roman Empire (for these are considered the forerunners of European civilization). So far in all these realms the men are Caucasian of varying shades of white and varying hair colour and eye colour.
    Now this is where the geographical parallels become a bit more blatant: which region is far east and just a bit south from the Shire? Mordor. Using the European metaphor and parallels, which region is far east and just a bit south from England? The eastern European countries of Bulguria and Romania. What is Mordor known for? The Dark Lord Sauron who once served the greater Dark Lord Morgoth. What are Bulguria and Romania known for in olden times amongst the English? Vampires, werewolves and other dark forces, including Dracula who was considered a mythological lord of darkness second only to the devil.
    And it gets even better: what do the men of Middle Earth east of Mordor look like? They are described as Turkic and/or Mongolian in appearance (not that Tolkien used the words Turkic or Mongolian) and they are called Easterlings, they often sweep in from the East to raid and ravage central Middle Earth (like the Mongolians, the Huns and others did in our history), and so represent Central Asia. What do the men south and south-east of Gondor look like? Brown to black and their kingdoms reside in deserts or jungles and their come many exotic beasts (Oliphants), these are the Haradrim and an obvious parallel to Africa.
    As for the Elves, they are white or fair-skinned yet are often considered by Men as spiritual beings or perhaps even angels? The religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam all emerged in the Middle East and all of their scriptures spoke of angels and beautiful heavenly beings, since in the Middle East the skin colour varies from a Mediterranean tanned colour to a light brown, then the prophets and angels are depicted in a "fair" way (angelic, lighter of skin), and in Europe those same prophets are depicted as fully white.
    The Elves don't represent the religions on Earth, but they do present the long-standing myth and idea of angels amongst men, that perhaps they once existed together at some point in the distant pass. And the angels depicted in both Islamic cultures (in medieval times) and European cultures all are fairer of skin (google angels islam to see for yourself).
    Just as the old English knew little to almost nothing of Asians and Africans (before the discovery of America), so it is that in Lord of the Rings very little is described by Tolkien of the Easterlings and the Haradrim- Tolkien is purposefully keeping the reader in ignorance because England was ignorant (due to geographic location) of the culture and ways of Africans and Asians, an ignorance which only began to diminish in the smallest of ways by the 19th century.
    Nor is there any parallel whatsoever in Middle Earth to America because west of Middle Earth is Aman, the land of the Gods and the High Elves (angels?). No one in England or anywhere else in the old world, knew of the Americas before Christopher Columbus. Tolkien here has literally created an artificial myth loosely based around England's geography.
    Now since Middle Earth is the world that once was, somehow and in some way, despite geography, history and time, so it is that Middle Earth is the story of the mythological England and the mythological world as it may have been seen by the English many centuries ago. It's an alternative universe in a time long ago and a world far, far away...

      A good summary, though I have a slight quibble with the part about Mordor. The place was supposed to be a largely desolate area, whereas Romania and the regions round about are known more for their thick forests and undeveloped land. I think Mirkwood and Fangorn Forest resemble the region more. Also, while Tolkien MIGHT have had Dracula in mind when inventing Sauron and his land, (since Stoker's novel was published before The Hobbit), I personally doubt it. Stoker's Dracula was about the blend of superstition and science, with the region of Transylvania being unique for it's continuing embracement of superstition, in contrast to the technology-focused, science-driven England. The historical Dracula (Vlad the Impaler) was a prince of Wallachia in the late 1400s (and very different from Stoker's version), well after the early medieval environment that Tolkien meant to channel for his Middle-Earth.

      Only one tiny addition: in the areas you mentioned have brown to dark brown skin (middle eastern). Northern of the Sahara, originally white people settled except for Nubians. Arabs/Middle Easterners and Indians alike range from blonde and fair skin with light eyecolors (rare) to very dark, almost black shades of brown (except for actual subsahara africans or their descendents of which specifically in the Middle East are extremely few due to the Gelding involved in Human Trafficking and Slavery in that area). So you will even see very european looking people (the faces are different though, so is the stature) in turkish or indian movies.

      "For all living things that are or have been in the Kingdom of Arda, save only the fell and evil creatures of Melkor, lived then in the land of Aman; and there also were many other creatures that have not been seen upon Middle-earth, and perhaps never now shall be, since the fashion of the world has changed." I've never been a fan of Hollywood's "we've got the rights to this popular property. It has lots of fans who love it the way it is, so the first thing we need to do is change it as much as possible" approach. They've had that problem since cinema began, and it's very rare that it doesn't end up with a poorer end result than just adapting the property as closely as possible to the original. But since the impetus behind deciding what to change has become "diversity" it's gone from being a likelihood that they'll destroy what was good about the original to a virtual guarantee. I'm sick of this "first we need to FIX it" mentality. If the show makers feel it needs "fixing" then don't bother making it at all - leave the adaptations to someone who actually likes and respects the original, and just make your own thing. But you are 100% correct - they do really just want to make their own thing, but since they no nobody would bother watching that, they intend to exploit the popularity of LoTR by dressing their fantasy series up in skinsuits flayed off the characters Tolkien created.

      Some further explanation. The War of Wrath is what ended the 1st Age and destroyed Beleriand. You'll find a lot of conflicting viewpoints about which, if any, of the Valar took part in that war (I believe some but not all did) but Eru Ilúvatar did not.
      All the Rings of Power were made in Eregion, which is in Eriador, except for the One Ring, which Sauron himself made in Mordor. None of these rings were made in Numenor. These events took place in the middle of the 2nd Age and culminated in the War of the Elves and Sauron, in which Númenór came to aid of the Elves and Sauron's armies were destroyed with Sauron retreating back to Mordor with all of the Rings of Power except for the three Elven rings.
      Some 1500 years later, towards the end of the 2nd Age, King Ar-Pharazôn, who would be the last king of Númenór, sent a massive force to Middle-Earth to attack Sauron. Upon seeing that his forces were completely outmatched by those of Númenór, Sauron surrendered himself to the Númenóreans and was taken prisoner and went to Númenór. The Númenóreans had already grown quite corrupt and Sauron, a master manipulator if there ever was one, soon went from prisoner to counselor to the king. He eventually persuaded Ar-Pharazôn to assault the Valar in Valinor, claiming that they (the Númenóreans) were every bit as entitled to be immortal as the Valar, Maiar, and Elves, and this invasion would be how they would get the secret of immortality. Besides being a complete lie, all this resulted in Eru Ilúvatar intervening directly to stop Ar-Pharazôn's forces as soon as they set foot in Valinor and also destroying the entire island of Númenór. Surviving Númenóreans who fled to Middle-Earth or were already living there and who had remained faithful to Eru Ilúvatar founded the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor under the rule of Elendil the Tall and his sons Isildur and Anarion, and together with the Elves of Middle-Earth, mostly under the leadership of High King Gil-Galad of Lindon, fought the War of the Last Alliance against Sauron, where Elendil and Gil-Galad cut down Sauron in combat but both of whom were slain by Sauron. Isildur then cut the One Ring of Sauron's hand.
      These 2nd Age events are what the Amazon show should be about but it definitely looks like the Tolkien Estate is allowing Amazon to make big and unnecessary changes to the Canon.

    • @nagillim7915
      @nagillim7915 2 года назад

      @@istari0 - from what i've read and heard elsewhere, amazon only has the rights to the Hobbit and the LOTR and its appendices. The Silmarillion, Lost Tales and all of Tolkien's other writings aren't part of what they licensed from the Tolkien estate.
      Ergo, the amazon show cannot be based on events from the Silmarillion. Only the brief outlines given in the appendices to LOTR that amazon are having to flesh out with their own imaginations (Eru help us!).

    Hobbits essentially live in one village, in the middle of the continent, in an era where mass transit doesn't exist.. and their defining feature is a sedentary lifestyle; that's why the Bagginses were considered odd, they actually wanted to travel. Can you imagine how strict the segregation rules would have to be to maintain racially pure bloodlines in a population of a couple of thousand people under those conditions? The people who do like him are usually nerds who don't understand these kinds of subtleties. Arda brings out a lot of emotion in people nowadays, especially "right-wing" youth, because for us its an allegory for our lost world (even though Tolkien said he hates an allegory wherever he smells one, I think he'd understand in this case).
