Five minutes in and I can already tell it's Lorelei! I was afraid a different editor would mess with the balance, but she is such a great fit for the channel!
The only problem with the false alert in Hawaii is that they didn't tell people for like a 1/2 hour or something crazy, that gave people plenty of time to freak the fuck out.
I know Kevin was just trolling Simon, but that reference wasn’t quite right: the Elves of Eregion actually forged 19 rings, but 16 were just ‘practice’ under the tutelage of Annatar (Sauron in disguise) and they were all originally intended to stay with the elves. However when Sauron later forged the one ring the elves just took theirs off, and he had to reclaim them to give to more ‘malleable’ races. Let’s all troll Simon with Tolkien correctly pls.

I live on Maui. The whole 'space lasers caused the fires' thing is positively the stupidest thing. I saw that rumor being deliberately started by someone right away because I was following both the Kula and Lahaina fires on any and all social media I could think of to find out information on how bad the fire currently was, where the fire front nearest me was, and if I needed to get serious about evacuating my home. I remember seeing a post on Twitter almost right away about this stupid idea, and that very first post I saw about it had text that said something like 'many people are saying the fire was deliberately set by space lasers.' The psychological manipulation of that first post already claiming that 'many people are saying' was apparently very effective in spreading such BS. The kicker is that if you have ever been to Maui it was very obvious that the landscape pictured in the image was not this island. So many uncritical people fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

I'm sure that's true for some conspiracy theorists but I'd argue that you're saying that because it's a common deflection created by George Soros and the Rothschild's to dismiss legit conspiracy theories by conflating one Jewish family with all Jewish people and then all conspiracy theorists with a group of people who are racist shit heads. This is all hypothetical tho I don't believe or care enough to choose a belief about all this
Here in Ontario, Canada we once woke up one Sunday morning to an emergency alert that there had been an incident at a nuclear power plant, only to receive a follow up about an hour later that the first message was a false alarm.
I was in Maui when the fires started and was trapped there for 3 days in our resort with no food, electricity or water. We were going into town to get food and the winds were crazy and the power lines were swinging like mad. Knowing they would be going down soon, we left. We weren't surprised at all at the news of the fires, but were shocked at the extent of the damage. The worst part was getting home and people saying that it was space lasers. People who've never been there nor know what happened.

I forget what my coworker thought was supposed to happen during the emergency broadcast test, but I do remember that she was worried enough that she wrapped her phone in foil and sat it in a microwave. I guess that somehow also protected her from everyone else's phones at work. Lol
I'm not positive I'm a biology grad who only took some physics classes. I think theoretically tinfoil would block a few signals to your phone. The microwave definitely not(fun fact they are NOT shielded. You get the same dose the food does if your standing outside it... although it's safeish heh...). But I'm almost positive wrapping it in to foil completely will block, I think your wifi. But supposition here.

I know Kevin was just trolling Simon, but that reference wasn’t quite right: the Elves of Eregion actually forged 19 rings, but 16 were just ‘practice’ under the tutelage of Annatar (Sauron in disguise) and they were all originally intended to stay with the elves.
"Many people are saying" and its variants are an instant "not credible" to me.
@@tylerboothman4496 Whenever I've heard something like that from someone I know, I've found the best response is "Which people?" Then you get to sit back and watch the person vapor lock.

Congrats on learning what a “dog whistle”, Simon.
It doesn’t sound racist but blaming the Rothchilds or George Soros is way to say “Jews” without being labeled a literal Nazi.
The one I learnt recently was antivaxers use "eating cupcakes" as code for vaccinating in an attempt to avoid being reported. So saying "my kid has never eaten cupcakes" and stuff
The government changed from ufo's to " help lift the stigma around the subject and encourage whistle blowers to come forward"
