  • Rue is a very old cultivated plant with long magical associations. It's also an important larval host plant for butterflies so if you want them in your garden, by all means plant rue!

    In Uruguay we call it RUDA (Roo-da). It's very common to use it for protection against "bad / negative energy". If you grow it in your front yard or near your front door it will keep evil spirits away. It's also used to bless newborns and heal babies & toddlers when they're sick.

      In Mexico 🇲🇽 too do you use for evil eye bc in Mexico we use it for evil eye we rub a fresh raw egg on the rue leaves & rue water along with Florida water,ground peppercorns,sometimes Marijuana & add secret ingredient which is saliva to remove the evil eye & also for minor aches & joint pain with some methol,camphor, & eucalyptus balm rub.

      @@jodyj0 Nothing so elaborate I'm afraid.
      When used to sanctify / bless newborns we just take a small cutting of Rue with some leaves on it, dip it in holy water and sprinkle some on the child while saying a prayer.

    This plant is special to me. Growing up in Ethiopia, my mother would put this in the milk every morning for breakfast. She would also use it for coffee. The smell brings back some of the best memories of my childhood. In my native language, it's called "tena' adam" which literally means "health of Adam". I envy the fact that you have it in your backyard.

      It would definitely grow In Oklahoma. I partially reside in Fort Woth a few months of the year,but my rue plant planted in the house there year round & I know Oklahoma & Northern Texas have 99% identical climate/soil bc we are literally next door even if the terrain is slightly different.I know Oklahoma is more hilly,but my rue also grew in upstate NY for decades when my grandma lived there & when I did too.It also grows in my other current homes in woodsy warm Atlanta,semi arid/arid California high desert with its extreme day/night temperature shifts & my grandmas alpine cabin in the 9,000 ft. elevation mountain foothills of Central Mexico as well & these plants are of the toughest variety,if they can grow in the Canadian border & at 9,000 feet above sea level in the alpine highland/oceanic climate of mountainous Mexico they'll grow in the lower elevations of Oklahoma trust me like I said I have rue plants in 3 sections of my garden front yard,back yard & on the right side in a property of mine in Fort Worth,TX your neighbor & they're massive & grow beautifully. RUE can tolerate aridness,heat precipitation,humidity & cold very well.

    Just got a rue smudge stick from a sprit shop after I asked the working healer what would be good to heal the home of my roommate, landlord, and I of a home that has been left to accumulate energy that 4 men in their later 20s would leave over time. Wanted to start from scratch and deep spring clean the room. She recommended Rue Smudge. Any recommendations of proper rue smudging would be greatly appreciated. This video has lots of info. I burned it and it is funky lol

      Definitely do it with the windows open- that way not only are you giving a way out for the spiritual funk but you're decreasing the smell from the rue, haha

    I was told to grow this plant, and did not know anything about it. It has thrived with zero love. I recently found out it has been helping my raspberries via pest control. Interesting, I have never had a reaction to it. How can it be propagated? I feel like making cuttings is going to aerosolize the irritant

    how do you propagate rue, i just received one as a gift and am hoping i can grow it successfully indoors :)

    • @TheGardenWitch
      @TheGardenWitch  4 года назад +3

      You can propagate rue pretty easily by taking a cutting and planting in in moist sand, as long as you keep it moist it should grow roots and become a new plant pretty quickly. However if you're going to grow rue indoors I hope you have a really good south-facing window; rue likes LOTS of sun and heat :)

      Best way to propagate is to put mid to small stems in a glass of water. Give it light but not sunshine. It will then grow roots so you can THEN plant in soil....keep the soil wet

    • @TheGardenWitch

      Rue tend to like things on the dry side so watering is only needed if the soil is completely dry if it's in a pot, or if you've had less than half an inch (1cm) of rain in a week if it's in the ground

    • @jodyj0

    Oh no i have a small lemon tree and i see some of the leaves get eaten so i inspected and saw small caterpillars
    I thought they're worms so i take them out and kill them, i forget that there are caterpillars, only from reading this comment section i remembered there's such species 🤦 and i keep wondering from where did they come as the soil is clean😅
    Next time i won't kill them tho the eaten lemon leaves is just annoying

    • @TheGardenWitch
      @TheGardenWitch  Год назад +1

      To be fair the caterpillars can sometimes be destructive and hurt the plant in the long run. I leave the swallowtail caterpillars on my rue because that plant can handle it but will take them off my parsley. If you can find out what kind of caterpillar they are maybe you can find another plant they'd like to eat that you can offer in the place of your lemon

    Hey, great video ! My rue is dying ;( it is all grown with very few green leaves. I have moved it to a new pot but it doesn’t seem to be thriving. I don’t know what to do!
    Any advise is greatly appreciated.

    • @TheGardenWitch
      @TheGardenWitch  4 года назад +2

      It's hard to say without knowing what it looks like, but if it's got a lot of woody growth on it with few leaves it can probably be pruned back some. Most herbs do well with pruning, and will put out an increase of bushier growth when you do it because the apical bud will decrease side growth- it's called apical dominance in botany circles :) You also want to make sure that potted rue has good drainage, it's one of those plants that doesn't like its roots to sit in water for a prolonged period

    • @jodyj0
      @jodyj0 2 года назад

      ID RECOMMEND PLANTING IT IN THE GROUND ITS MORE RESILIENT THAT WAY & SHOULD BE WATERED VERY SPARINGLY ITS A PLANT NATIVE TO A SEMI ARID & ARID REGION & SWAMPY CONDITIONS,TOO MUCH WATER WILL KILL IT.
