The leaf is added to a brewed coffee for a wonderful flavor and in Ethiopia. Dried rue is also added to dried 'red hot papers' before grinding and making hot spices.

Rue is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which might make it useful in treating Chaga’s disease and other sympathetic nervous system disorders.
