Although we only lived in Brighton for a short time in 1962, my sister Heather & I had a lot of fun there. Sadly, we lost touch with the friends we made two by the name of Geraldine & Stephanie

Brighton born and bred . What a lovely town( as it was called then) it was in the past especially in the 50's , 60's and 70's . Now in 2024 a pale shadow of it's former glory . Dirty , rundown , neglected and why people still decide to holiday here is a mystery to me . Thank God people of my generation can look back and remember how it once was .

My home town family moved to london in the 50s but as a young lad in the 50s and 60s would spend some of my summer hlidays staying with my Aunt in Coombe road spending all day on front and piers spending my pennies and then catching the bus back .felt so safe .Unhappily when l go back its gone downhill

Probably because none of it seems to last more than a year or so before disappearing, or whatever heritage is left, seems to be on the brink of collapse.@@jackbudgen8858

I love these videos. I've lived in Brighton my entire life, and even though a lot has changed, much hasn't. It's quite nice to see after most people complaining about how bad it is now. The beachfront is still great. The laines are still great. The Pavillion hasn't changed much at all. There are still hippies and musicians on the walkways. The vibe is very much still there.

I was born in 1955, and left Brighton three years ago (haven't moved far). I think the biggest change has come about because of the presence of students and the influx of Londoners escaping the unaffordable prices of the capital. I lived by the University of Brighton (Coombe Road). Around the year 2000, students started impacting our formerly quiet residential area. More and more homes became HMOs, with former residents moving away to escape the resultant antisocial behaviour and mess. Young people, born in Brighton, cannot afford accommodation in their home town. I know these problems exist all over the UK, but Brighton has been affected more than most. So, yes, Brighton has changed for the worse. Superficially it looks the same, but the people have changed. I don't believe that many of my old schoolfriends still reside there.

That was extraordinary. Like being dragged back through the door into a half forgotten world. All looks about 1969-70, and i remember as @ 9 year old, being really p'd off that West Pier was closed for filming OWALW during the summer hols! Outrageous!
I must have been in one or two of those crowd scenes.
Nowadays, whenever I have to go back to Brighton, i get a really strong urge to thoroughly wash my hands upon leaving.

OWALW was filmed in the summer of 1968. I was 13.

My great grandfather was an engineer on Volks Electric Railway, shown here. It was very innovative at the time. He was once described as Magnus Volk's "right-hand man".

Wow! This was like finding a time machine! Although I wasn't around until the 80s I can recognise most of the places in this video. I remember that funny little boating pool used to have round "bumper boats" in my day, and not those traditional boats. I cannot work out where that area along the seafront is with all the flowers would have been. I remember the paddling pool though. That Post Office vending machine selling stamps, cards and envelopes seems like a good idea. Why don't they have those now? The Open Market is as I remember it, apart from that weird wall bit at the entrance. I used to HATE the fish bit in the middle and would always run through it, holding my breath. I am pretty sure one of the squares featured is Palmeira Square, technically in Hove, looking north towards the Floral Clock. "English's" in the Lanes became Forfars bakery and had a café above where I used to eat jacket potatoes. It's adjacent to Donatello's! Those parking meters! Look how smart the traffic warden was! Look how relaxed everyone seemed, especially the hippies walking along the seafront.

A lot of this reminds me of how Brighton still was in the eighties. I think change really started in the nineties and then with City status of Brighton and Hove from 2000 onwards. It’s still a great place and more character has been retained than lost over the years.

It's nice to think someone went out there way to think about filming everyday life for the future generations, But does make you wonder what life is all about really, people going about their daily business and enjoying the seaside just like today, The only three subjects still happening today are the November vintage car race, volks railway but not as long now, and the scaffolding around that art deco building popping up every 10 years or so,😀 Does hit home to think most adults in this film have now passed away. Nice not to see cyclists racing along the prom like today. ''What is the meaning of life 😂

It went with cheap flights, package holidays and more disposable income in the 1970s. By the 80s it was a zombie town. Acid house was the best thing that happened.
