  • Welcome to the Ghosts of Brighton (Please note, the photos of people are for illustration)
This video focuses on some the hauntings in The Lanes, Brighton Town Hall (Police Cells), The Brighton Grand Hotel and the now ruined West Pier. Brighton has so many ghostly tales and there is likely to be a Part 2! We have phantoms, roaming ghosts, prisoners, terrible tragedies and dark entities on the West Pier and poltergeist activity. There have been so many tragedies on the now derelict West Pier; are dark entities present?
Some of the stories focus on historic events and I hope you feel that my video covers the sad side of history in a respectful and honest way, without the need for sensationalising the past. Please stay tuned to the end to hear a small post script from me, Nicola.
As always, I hope you enjoy these tales from Brighton. Feel free to leave a comment. Thank you so much for your kind words and comments. They mean so much to me. Please feel free to Like and Subscribe to the channel.

    Hello Nicola,
I had a strange experience on Brighton Pier in either 1967 or 8. I was on the pier with my cousin, a keen photographer who wanted to capture some images of the glorious summer sunset. I moved away from him a little and was gazing happily at the colours of sky and water, thinking of nothing in particular other than how lovely it all was. I felt my hat leave my head as though someone had grabbed and flipped it and saw it heading toward the water. I then heard what I can only describe as a growly kind of whisper say something I could not properly distinguish then felt a hard push in the small of my back which caused me to stumble forward. I thought it was my cousin playing a trick and yelled, 'You idiot!'. I then felt my cousin grab me to try and stop my momentum, he said, 'What the hell just happened?'. He was adamant he'd not been close enough to touch me, had seen my hat lift off my head just prior to me starting to stumble toward the edge of the pier. I didn't quite believe him, I thought he was frightened a prank had almost had horrific consequences and was afraid of the telling off he'd get from our families.
When his film was developed after the holiday (no digital cameras back then!) it clearly showed he had taken photos of me from where he was stood a few paces away, behind and slightly to my right. He'd captured my hat few inches away from my head and the first couple of steps of my stumble before letting go of his camera and coming to my assistance when he realised I was unable to control my momentum.
I'd like to thank you both for the quality of your content and for the beautiful clarity of your diction. I have some age related hearing deterioration which causes difficulty when people talk too fast and/or slur their words together. Your clarity combined with your wonderfully expressive vocabulary makes listening to you a delight.

It really is awful. This might sound strange, but it really affected me for some time when I discovered this and I think I am going to do a follow up video on this story. I’m somewhat suspicious about the motive behind the action of throwing the box over the pier and some of the accounts don’t add up. I don't know, sometimes people do stupid things without thinking. But it could have been a case of the boy being cheeky and he decided to punish him? Hard to say really. If it was an accident, imagine how much it would have haunted him for the rest of his life.

Bridges and piers are strange places, liminal places, built out over water or empty space. Water was believed to be one of the gateways to the underworld. It's no coincidence that our ancestors made offerings into water to placate the spirits that lived there. We still throw coins into wells and pools to do the same. Who knows what might lurk angrily around the old pier? Thank you, I really enjoy your videos - they are excellent and always give me food for thought.

You are absolutely right. I had horrible hay fever and I also was beginning to worry that it was becoming a bit too long, so I found myself cutting some space between stories and sections. But I absolutely appreciate what you’ve said, no offence taken at all. I can hear it myself on reflection and at least I can take that on board. I’m learning all the time but the hayfever has made my eyes stream, made me a touch breathless and all a bit tired! But I’ll bounce back and I’m learning to use some new software that will allow me to improve audio too. Thank you so much and roll on autumn! 👻🙋‍♀️🙏

Former Brighton resident here (born and bred) here are a few other assorted accounts not mentioned in this video and well as a personal experience.
In Preston Park there is a manor house and it is claimed by the owners that every single morning every window in the building opens by themselves between 4-6am and it is impossible to secure or seal them, leading to various security concerns. The cause has never been satisfactorily explained.
In the mid 80s, several independent witnesses (roughly about a dozen) claimed to have seen the figure of a skeletal man with either a bare skull or X ray features dressed in double denim and astonishingly a full native American headdress in broad daylight one afternoon strolling on the prominade beside the Palace pier. He was only seen once and his identity never discovered.
In 1994 the body of a woman was found in Queen's park. under various mysterious . She was drowned on Dry land several meters away from the boating lake (which was only 2-3 inches deep at the time, and the liquid in her system was not pond water but a mysterious black goo or slime she had apparently been so thoroughly immersed in that it had caused her intestines to rupture. The official explanation was that she suffered from some sort of mental disorder which had compelled her to drink herself to death with the standing water in the lake when even a mouthful would have made her violently sick and her relatives denied the diagnosis. The following day, several men in Hazmet suits who claimed to be from the council (but most certainly weren't) were seen removing evidence of the goo which they claimed was a harmless form of algae from the scene of the incident. This case is discussed more fully in a video called 'strange death in Brighton' by another RUclips channel called 'Beyond creepy'
In the mid 2000's I visited some old friends in Brighton who were living near Medeira drive. on the final night of our visit we had a barbeque on the beach. it was a still, moonlit night and around midnight we were joined by a young lady none of us recognised wearing a glowing rainbow hued dress that looked like a tutu that shimmered like a soap bubble. Strangely, only some of us could see her (myself included) whilst others could not.
One person who could see her and wasn't part of our group was an MP from the local Lib Dem party. he went to the local paper with his story as well as sketch of the girl he saw despite being advised not to by his party as they thought it might hurt his political career and campaign. I think I still have the newspaper clipping stored away somewhere. From the descriptions of the tragic girl in the post script story, I think it may have been her. She was a very peaceful and oddly tranquil soul and has provided the inspiration for a character in a novel I am working on called 'secret society' about a colony of ghosts that haunt Brighton.
Great channel and video by the way! most enjoyable. Congrats from a new sub. ;-)

Preston Manor might well be a video on its own, as might Beachy Head (Not exactly Brighton but there are some interesting stories but I suspect I’ll have to place that video elsewhere as YT might not like some of the content there). Hi Nicola. Awesome live ghosts stories. I enjoyed it . I have another ghost story to tell you. Back in 2004. I was sleeping in my apartment alone. When in the middle of the night. I felt someone stroking my hair for a few minutes. I felt it but did not open my eyes to see who the ghost was. Then it stopped. In the morning I woke up and the temperature dropped. After my incounter. I saw no one. In my apartment. And after that the temperature was normal again. I'll never forget that day back in 2004. Have a great day. See you next video. How are you and your cat doing? I'm doing well, and so is my cat Benjamin. 😊

Great work as always, Nicola! There have been a number of murders that have been committed by individuals, some of whom had no previous violent history, who said that they were taken over by something that made them act that way.; and that they could not control it. Even police and those who knew them were surprised by their murderous action, as the murders didn't really make sense. There was a murder here in the states that the defendant's attorney attempted to use it as a defense. Paranormal investigators testified in that trial. Those who dismiss such an idea might ask themselves if they have ever had the impulse to do something violent and against their morals and character - something that they would never actually want to do or see happen. I really enjoyed the stories of the Grand Hotel. You can just imagine stuck spirits trying to come up with something to tell people that they are there. The West Pier may have quite a concentration of various spirits. England has such a long and layered history; who knows what has happened there, or what rituals may have been conducted there long ago that affect it to this day? This is one reason why it is SO dangerous to take such things lightly or casually. You just don't know what doors you may open or what entities you may invite in - with the consequences suffered by those who come long after you.

I always looked at it when I walked past , it was still painted white and silver . It was there for a few years. I used to live in Brighton in the 90s. The West Pier was always an eerie structure. I never went on it as the access was removed. I used to watch the starlings in the autumn, make their spectacular displays before they settled to roost on the pier. The only thing I heard about it was more mundane; that the fires were set deliberately because it was just too costly to repair. Locals wanted it restored but it wasn't viable. I was sorry when it finally fell into the sea. But I do think a place can be ill omened. And maybe it's for the best. The poor kid hit by the crate was upsetting. Wonderful pictures!

Wherever large groups of people gather, particularly around a body of water with strong and unpredictable currents, death is bound to occur. People are relaxed and off their guard. It would be astounding if there were no mishaps. I think the sea itself is a dark entity. Considering how we misuse it as a dumping ground, I am not surprised that the ocean gets a few hits in on its own.

Oh, BTW, I think you said you were not going to Alnwick Castle but I thought I read that there is supposed to be a vampire at Alnwick Castle. I am really sorry I never got that far North; I just went to Edinburgh and York.

My grandparents used to live in Brighton and in the 1970s when I was a kid they would take me and my sister to the pier I remember at the very end there was a small little ride with jump scares. I’m wondering whether this would’ve been the west pier? I live in Vancouver now perhaps on my next visit to the UK I will go to Brighton and check it out.

If it was the early 1970s it may well have been the west pier. There’s also the Brighton Palace Pier that has quite a few rides on it. Here’s a link:

I grew up in Brighton so I watch this with great interest. The only scary thing I saw was a glue sniffer on the beach in the 80's...oh, and a flasher over the golf course!! I was also only a bit older than the poor two girls murdered by Russell Bishop in Wild Park. My Dad had a fishing boat for sale and one Saturday afternoon, shortly after Bishop's initial acquittal, a potential buyer wanted to come and see it. Step forward Russell Bishop. I implored my Dad, not known for his tolerance, not to do anything. My Dad, with tyre iron in hand, told Bishop EXACTLY what he can do with the fishing boat and thankfully, Bishop walked off smiling. Turns out, Bishop DID kill those two poor kids and also tried to abduct another child who escaped. Weird old times. I do hope Bishop is knitting himself a new 'A' hole in hell for what he did.

Goodness me what a frightening experience that must have been. Yes sadly many UK beaches are not without their problems and some seaside towns are just dreadful now to be honest! I think Brighton is still pretty special though 👻🙋‍♀️

Very interesting to see Lewes mentioned in the video. I have never been to Britain but i watch Fiona Hesketh on her Avid Gardener RUclips channel and she has spoken of growing up at 86 High Street Lewes (an old solicitors office) where she had some paranormal encounters during her childhood.

l used to work at stationers shop Walter Gillett in the Lanes , Brighton . At the top of the building was a large hall known as Gillett Hall where the ghost of a nun was seen . Also footsteps were heard in various parts of the building and doors opening by themselves when no one was there . The whole building was very old and a maze of small rooms , cellars and larger areas . l used to work downstairs in the basement and though a believer in the supernatural l never saw or heard anything strange in all the years l was there .

@@ghostcasebook1266 Heard different stories over the years although l don't know if they are true or not . One that it was once the site of an old monastary or a nunnery l can't recall which although the person that saw the ghost said it was a nun which supports the nunnery story . ln later years it was a brewery which rings true as down in the basement where l worked we stored huge rolls of corrugated paper in a cellar area which looked like the places you'd keep wooden beer casks . A fascinating old building which sadly is no longer there .
