  • Welcome to The Bromley Poltergeist!
    Some images are for illustration.
Today, we are going to investigate a very strange case of a poltergeist from the early 1970s. Three elderly men were tormented for a number of years by a violent poltergeist in a rather unusual location. Why the men were targeted, nobody knows, but the Society for Psychical Research found no evidence of a hoax. Welcome to this little known, yet terrifying case of a deeply disturbing poltergeist. In the post script, we will discuss some theories about poltergeists and I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments! Do you think a poltergeist was at work or could the events be explained in a different way?
Some of the stories focus on historic events and I hope you feel that my video covers the sad side of history in a respectful and honest way, without the need for sensationalising the past. Please stay tuned to the end to hear a small post script from me, Nicola, where we will discuss some ideas about such hauntings.
As always, I hope you enjoy these tales from across the UK. Feel free to leave a comment. Thank you so much for your kind words and comments. They mean so much to me. Please feel free to Like and Subscribe to the channel.

When you said, " . . . three elderly men", I was very surprised. Usually, poltergeist activity centers around adolescents. Although it can and has happened to people of all ages, it is teenagers that normally fuel the fire.

Yes I was shocked and can you imagine being attacked by a saw of all things and having a garden fork lobbed at you? It’s terrifying! And I agree, odd it’s not adolescent as usual. I think the fact they were pensioners makes this such an unusual case! 👻🙋‍♀️🙏

I had an encounter with...something at a friend's house. A large heavy picture was lifted off it's hooks and smashed onto the floor. The wire wasn't broken, the hook was intact in the wall. She had beautiful tropical plants, tree sized, and the leaves would rustle sometimes.

My sister rang me in the early hours of the morning to tell me that she had woken up just after 3am which she said was unusual for her. She decided to put the tv on low and was sat up in bed watching the tv when something caught her eye to the left of her. She has one of those cherry blossom plug in trees in her bedroom and one of the branches was shaking quite vigorously and stopped as soon as she spotted it. She said there were no windows open, nothing to cause a draft and her floor is solid. Her dog then jumped on her bed and started barking and growling whilst staring at her slightly ajar bedroom door. She was a little apprehensive hence the early morning call to me.

Fascinating case and one I'm not familiar with. Those old boys would not have made something like this up and, as you say, they were quite obviously in some physical danger too in terms of the objects being thrown around.
On a personal note a number of years ago I worked the night shift as a security guard on a derelict site undergoing demolition in a town on the south coast of Devon. We would have stones thrown at us from nowhere, from all directions, whenever we went out on our nightly patrols. The stones were always the same small round pebbles, like those you'd find on a beach, and they were always very warm to the touch. There was an intelligence to the phenomena too, in that the stone throwing would respond to certain people more than others. The stones were never thrown directly at us but rather just passed us or next to us, as though done simply to get our attention, which it certainly did! Going out on patrol in the middle of the night and hearing these stones being thrown closer and closer to you was pretty terrifying. Who knows what force or energy is behind such phenomena, but it definitely exists whatever it is.

@ghostcasebook1266 Hi there, yes it was an experience I'll never forget. On one occasion in the small hours of the morning, after having more stones thrown at us and after this had been going on now for several weeks, I challenged whatever it was by asking if throwing stones was all it could do. I accused it of being boring and continued to walk away on my patrol. No sooner had I got barely three steps away there was the sound of glass smashing at my feet. I jumped and looked down to see what remained of a broken light bulb. It could indeed throw more than stones if provoked! This proved to me that whatever it was definitely had some sort of intelligence. I am a big fan of your channel, and I look forward to more poltergeist cases being covered in future. 👍

@@johnbowles5399 , thanks for sharing such a visceral sounding experience John. Very interesting, you know when people say they saw a black mass or orb hovering around. I know for a fact that’s possible, I’ve seen one , that I was totally unaware of follow me out of my parents bathroom and when I looked up and noticed it ( coz it looked like it was either looking for me, or lost me, followed me halfway downstairs , I looked up. Noticed it and it jumped ahead of me by about a foot and went into me.
I didn’t feel anything or any different. I immediately told me father about it, who just looked at me- side eye style 😒.
I don’t know what to make of it but I know what I saw. There can be a bit of friction at my parents home and tbh that a black orb hangs about. Really doesn’t surprise me, my dads had health issues for a lot of years, I mean like 50 years. But he’s a workaholic. Thats what gets him up in the morning- work. And working as a flooring contractor aswell ( Hard work 😓 ). All the family have been effected by it in some way or other plus my mom has been married to him 50 years.
So she deserves the biggest medal 🥇 that’s available for being determined not to turn her back on her family and husband. But yet there will be negative emotions embued into the atmosphere by my mum too, I guess. Sorry if I’ve digressed a little there. It sort of flowed out that way. 🫢

Most important sentence: it stopped when the work on a nearby garage was finished. I'd investigate the heck out of that garage and the land it's on; also, why was that house torn down in 1800 and nothing built in its place?? I'd investigate it as well. The efforts at communication need to be re-examined, too. Lots of possibilities!

The thing that fascinates me with poltergeists is how their actions defy the accepted rules of known physics. For example items are often found piled at strange angles that couldn't possibly stay connected unless they were glued or held together in some other way. Then there are apports, things appearing out of nowhere and then just as quickly disappearing, all reay fascinating.

    Hi Nicola,
I’m clairvoyant and my feeling is that 1659 represents a year, that children were murdered, and that the crosses meant that the clergy had something to do with it. As for the three men at the center of the activity, if they ever had anything to do with the harm of children, it may have triggered the attacks, or they may have simply been at the wrong place at the wrong time. The place where the new garages were being built may have disturbed the place that their bodies were buried….I would be curious to know what stood on the property in 1659. These hauntings usually result from a wrong doing that needs healing. Check out the Galway Poltergeist case in Ireland. Please let us know what you find out.

Interesting case. I think the fact that it didn't last shows definite poltergeist activity. I grew up with a presence in our house from when I was very young until I left aged 24. At one stage we had ramped up activity which was poltergeist in nature. I would lie in bed and have a fingernail tap the end of my brass bed. I would tell it to stop and it would and then it would start up again. We all witnessed a dark small shape run across our hallway and our old doorbell which was positioned between two locked doors and not accessable would ring constantly and there was nobody there. My brother said out loud that we would contact the church re having an exorcism and it stopped at that very point. Back to normal - which was the presence of a lady who would call out to me quite a lot but I was very much used to her so that was fine.

I was so used to the experiences with the lady calling to me that I was fairly unphased however the poltergeist activity was fairly unpleasant and I was scared at night. I have witnessed many full bodied apparitions since I was very young so I tend to be a bit blase about it all to be honest. More recently I have had large black masses floating above my bed and I'm woken up by them and that is quite terrifiying. I see it as a blessing and a curse as I know many haven't experienced it and I also fully believe in an afterlife because of it. I love your channel! xx

As someone who has witnessed, shall we say, things. I can attest to the confusion poltergeist activity can produce. Thankfully ours limited itself to opening doors, turning lights on, apporting a spinning gold coin like object, which dropped into a waste bin, only to not be there when we looked, flashing lights, stacking of objects, books in particular, and on one occasion, recreating a scenario from a previous time. Can I say that, at no time did we feel threatened or alarmed at the activity. And we actually missed it when it stopped.

A doctor's house occupied the grounds? Perhaps a patient was buried there for some reason and the gardening taking place was disturbing the unknown gravesite?
I don't really believe in the whole ghost/haunting thing. (I do believe i died when i was younger from alcohol poisoning after a heavy night of drinking; heard trumpets and saw a blinding bright light. My brother, who died just a few years prior, met me and said to go back, its not your time yet... I woke up absolutely bewildered and completely sober!)
Anyway, I enjoy listening to you relate these incidents; your tone and voice inflection make it seem as if you are talking one on one with someone. Your comments and thoughts at the end are a nice touch, offering some possible explanations and sometimes even relating personal experiences. It's a good way to tie everything together -- like the conclusion written at the end of a term paper.

Well; that was truly awesome. Defo gotta watch this again.
Truly terrifying for those involved and witnesses too.
Some of the manifestation’s would have been nigh on impossible to physically create. It makes some of the sceptical academic theories appear somewhat asinine.
I have witnessed objects fall from shelves, fly harmlessly across a room. This happened at a friends house where the previous occupant died in the bungalow. Every time we talked about him, these things happened. Perhaps we were all suffering from anxiety or it was an earth quake. Anyway, we all know what we saw; perhaps an educated sceptic can offer a perfectly simple answers. So yes; because of my own experiences,I fully believe these poor people in tonights story.

Thank you for your kind words about the new series and I’m looking forward to creating more videos for the future 👻🙋‍♀️🙏

@@ghostcasebook1266 No, never threatening at all.
Nothing was ever done with violence.
Things never escalated, we would talk about him and it appeared as if he was acknowledging us, showing us he was present.
It is worth noting however my friend had two younger sisters, about 12 and 14 yrs of age. However there were manifestations regardless of his sisters presence or otherwise. Sometimes it would be footsteps when someone was alone in the house, that kind of thing.
I witnessed these things myself multiple times.
As far as those poor chaps go, there are several leads I believe. One has got to be the date. Another might be previous usage of the land; especially with a Doctor in residence. Or it may be something that pre dates the Doctor. It occurs to me that it may be something entirety beyond our understanding or an incident or incidents lost to the mists of time.
Of course; non of this detracts from how amazing, frightening and awe inspiring this story is.

I am so happy your channel popped up on my thread! I’ve been fascinated by hauntings for decades and have never heard of this extremely captivating case! I What I find most compelling is the “victims.” Generally speaking, when people get to the ages of these gentlemen they are brutally honest and have little tolerance for ignorant or irrational ideas! The fact that these gentlemen and the witnesses shared their experiences indicates how genuinely confused and frightened they were, but they didn’t seem to want public attention. All of these factors certainly make me see this as a very real and very terrifying haunting. And your thorough telling of this event is exceptional, and I think I’ll spend the rest of this gloomy, snowy day watching the rest of your videos! These attacks were quite vicious. I realize that this was a large component of stock, but their poltergeist certainly enjoyed its fertilizer. Were any photos taken? The externalisation theory, the idea that some deep-seated anger or frustration in the living manifests itself kinetically, is no less weird than a vindictive dead person moving stuff around. Both ideas are completely orthogonal to physics and psychology. The arc of activity, from small noises and movements to grand theatrical tricks, followed by an apparently unmotivated disappearance, are common in many poltergeist cases. It suggests the agent runs out of energy, or the withdrawal of permission, or becomes bored and moves on to a different location. The repertoire of pranks is similar, levitation, projectiles, apports, pushing, daubed words and pictures. It's as if the place and its contents become the stage of a performance for a captive audience.

Extraordinary, well presented incident. Loved it! This takes Poltergeist activity to a new level... taking objects and transporting them through walls and into cars. The spiritual world must surely involve some kind of extra dimension to allow things to materialise from nowhere. I was plagued, or blessed, for about two years, by the appearance of marbles that came from 'nowhere'. One was found in my handbag, one in the side pocket of the passenger seat of my car, as I drove along. The last one appeared, rolling across the far side of my kitchen floor as I entered the room. We had just moved into that house, and had no children in our lives.

@@ghostcasebook1266 Thanks you! The marble apports ( and sometimes it was clear plastic beads or small plastic balls) started appearing in the garden while briefly renting a late 1700's cottage and continued for the next two moves, first in the gardens then culminating in the bag, car and kitchen floor. The only child connection was that in the first period rental in Westleton, at 9.00pm on two consecutive nights, we heard, through an adjoining wall, the distinct sound of children running along wooden floors. It was a holiday home, and empty at the time. Maybe a lost child latched onto me?

The more I learn about these reports the more I believe that there has to be something after this life. I think if you were a researcher going into this situation you could not allow any fear to override your entire reason for being there.

I did know of this case and have visited what is left of the "guild site" in Downham, the allotments are now a public park, but one of the sheds remains, the rest have had new housing built on the land. I couldn't find any garages nearby though it is very close to the site of the dividing wall that was erected across the road to stop the inhabitants of the new council estate travelling through the posher 1930s and older housing to get to Bromley town centre quicker. This wall caused great tension in the area at the time between the private house owners to the South and the new Downham Council estate residents. I have also seen a booklet on this story in the local studies section of Bromley Central Library. Also I believe the 2 SPR members who were assigned to this case developed a relationship during their investigation and were married at a later date.

I love videos - they are so professionally done and far better than any program you see on the tv. I am a Londoner and I have never heard of this case which I find much more interesting than the Enfield Poltergeist which I always felt was a bit iffy. This one sounds much more fact based and I am surprised that a film wasnt made of it. I think sometimes our energy fields are enormously strong when we are in a state of high emotion and this can affect surrounding objects. I looked after my niece for a while during her parents divorce, she was very young but amazingly aware of what was happening with her parents. Every time she stayed pictures would fall - not just fall but end up in the middle of the room. We actually witnessed this happening on several occasions. That doesn't seem to be the case with this story because the men, all elderly would be more in control of their emotions. I agree that they would have no benefit in lying as they worked to set up their shop and would not have frightened their customers away. I feel particularly sorry for Taylor who obviously had an attachment and couldnt seem to get any peace from it. Anyway, thanks so much for a great video of such a fascinating story.

Since the activity stopped after the completion of the car park, it is logical to think that the car park site is the source. Maybe there is a body under the car park. The vibrations of the car park construction has disturbed then sprit and it’s very angry. The three men and the garden store were just the closest location that the sprit took out it’s anger. Why not take out it’s anger on the car park construction crew? Who knows.

Thanks for this, it totally blows a hole in the theory that all poltergeists are tied to teenage hormonal imbalance. Some even say they project frustration and it manifests physically. That certainly doesn't track with a bunch of lovely old codgers running a gardening shop.
It sounds to me like something was displaced by the nearby construction. It may not have gotten the press because it did blow away ALL the hypothesis made about poltergeists. The parapsychologists didn't want to run to the press and say we're bloody idiots we've got this all wrong.

Further to this, the famous 'Pete' Cardiff Poltergeist was alleged to haunt a small backstreet automobile repair centre called Mower Services. During the 1980s. -The men and the lady working there were middle aged and older. It messed about with keys, showered them with nuts, bolts and often money, but never with malice.

Your video took me back to my childhood years living in a 3 up 3down family home in Coventry, we had a tesident Poltergeist which seemed to live in the back room and make a lot of noise, my father told both myself and my brother and sister that it was the noisy lodger, I was about 12 at the time and my siblings where younger. As I got older and reached age 21 my father told me the truth and that he put a hasp and staple on the back room door, not so much to stop the entity getting out but to prevent us kids getting in, there is much more to this experience.

Really impressed with your professional, open minded and intelligent consideration of this subject. I have been studying the paranormal since I was a child and had never heard of this case so thank you for this. I will definitely be subscribing. My personal take on the issue is that I tend to subscribe to the view that the majority of poltergeist type cases are more to do with manifestations of the subconscious or aspects of the psyche the person is (for whatever reason), unable to express. We likely know very little of the true capabilities of the human mind; it is the most complex machine in the known universe. That being said, I do not rule out the possibility of communication from discarnate entities be they departed loved ones or any form of spiritual being. I think its very important to always remember that most things in life (and beyond), are rarely ever caused by one thing. It is usually more complex than that.

Thank you for your video which I felt was very well researched and presented. While I'm sceptical about paranormal phenomena in general, I've experienced some things I can't explain.
The Bromley polt you have provided certainly shows (in my opinion) that there was no hoax. The fact that the phenomena ceased when the work on the new block of garages finished, leads me to ask whether your research showed that the garages were also on the land formerly Lettsome's gardens? Another question for you - looking at Wikipedia the details for Dr John Lettsome mention that he had a villa in Camberwell (not Bromley which appears to be quite some way away!) which was demolished when the estate was broken up in the early 1800s. It goes on to say that only one cottage built on the land remains: 'The Hermitage' (number 220) which survives, at the junction with Grove Hill Road.
Finally, I wondered if the Lettsome villa had been built on a plague pit but, having viewed the interactive plague pit map, it would appear that the only plague pits south of the Thames (around that area) were at Southwark/Elephant & Castle, Gipsy Hill and Greenwich which discounts that theory. I have liked and subscribed to your channel!

Great job - very interesting lesser known case. I suppose there are commonplace explanations for the reported phenomenon, the most common being that once they'd been frightened by an initial happening, other reports might've followed in succession out of sheer paranoid expectation. The second is naturally, the chemicals they worked with, combined with whatever health conditions and/or treatments the pensioners may have contributed to sensationalized perceptions. Like you, I doubt they were outright lying though. These are tough people who lived through very earthly terrors like wars, tyranny, horrific working and living conditions, dire poverty, rampant disease and deaths, etc., who don't frighten easily or go off on fantastic flights of fancy so readily. Bless them.
