    Mockingjay is not bad at all. It's just that people don't understand that the series never was about the games... I think it was way better they split the last movies. I don't want a 4 hour long movie. Both movies had important parts.

      After finishing the series, this was definitely my take away. Even though the series was named after them, they were only ever the set up to the issues that followed. I'm glad they split them up in the end. It was needed.

      This isn’t entirely true. Even Francis Lawrence said his time limit for completing Mockingjay was too short so to make the best out of the two films was obviously a difficult task for him. I also think another problem was the fact Divergent and Maze runner movies came in and they all end with a cliche “overthrowing the government story” so of course people would feel a bit less inclined to be excited about it.

    I'm generally happy with the adaptations EXCEPT for that Peeta kept his leg.
    He was supposed to have it so damaged in the first games that they had to amputate it and give him a prosthetic.

    So, something about the books that the movies cut out that I think you should know is that Haymitch won the 50th Hunger Games or the 2nd Quarter Quell and the gimmick of that was double the number of tributes so 2 male 2 female. Haymitch ended up forming an alliance with a girl from his district named Maysilee after she saved his life. Together, they reached the edge of the arena which was a cliff beyond that Haymitch discovered a force field that bounced anything thrown off the cliff back. When it came down to the final 5 Maysilee, not wanting to end up in a situation where they'd have to try to kill each other, left Haymitch. Sometime later Haymitch heard her scream and ran to help her but was just a little too late and had to watch her die. Haymitch was one of the last 2 the other being a girl from IIRC one of the Career districts where they dealt serious injuries to each other. Haymitch managed to lead the girl to the cliff and she threw her last weapon, an axe, at him. They both were too injured to keep fighting and so the girl thought that the winner would be who survived their injuries longer. But since Haymitch knew of the forcefield he was ready for when the axe returned and dodged it while it killed the girl making him the victor. But since the capital didn't like how he won since using their forcefield made them look stupid in their eyes they punished Haymitch by killing his entire family and his girlfriend. Which on top of having to watch kids dying as he tried to mentor them for decades understandably messed him up.

    The person in the background at 40:27 y'all paused to talk about is an Avox. People from the capital or districts who rebelled or ran away and were captured by the capital. They have their tongues cut out and their mouths sort of sewn shut and are forced into being servant like slaves for the capital for the rest of their lives.
    It got cut for time but Katniss sort of had a connection to the Avox serving her in the first two books as she recognized them as a girl she saw one time running away in the woods. She was out hunting and saw a guy and a girl running away in the woods and they were chased down and picked up by one of the capitals hoverships. Katniss was hidden well enough she wasn't seen but it stuck with her because her and the girl made eye-contact while the girl was being captured and she couldn't do anything.
    Avoxs were a sort of big minor plot element throughout the books as yet another form of capital oppression and show of force that was always in the contestants face. Like here is a servant that sort of implies "if you rebel against us and we decide not to kill you this is what you could look forward to."

      Mockingjay had its fair share of problems. They split the movie into two parts which is already a bad idea. Sure he might make more money overall but it annoys the fan base, especially those that read the book. If you’re Harry Potter then yeh after 6-7 books sure split the last one into two parts, but the Hunger Games wasn’t that.
      Second, Francis Lawrence (the director) said his time frame for
      Completing mockingjay was pretty short meaning mistakes would be made, and corners would be cut. A lot of mockingjay took place in 13 which was miserable and gloomy and a huge contrast to the first two movies.
      The games - yes no games. Some argue that whoever complains about this didn’t understand the social and political commentary that the story opened up. As somebody who did understand it, mockingjay still felt flat. The two movies especially, and if you consider that the Maze Runner and Divergent movies had started to release; they all end with the cliche “overthrowing the government arc” so it’s the problem of having a very interesting concept and two books full of opportunities for great storytelling, all have to be removed for the sake of the conclusion. Whatever Hunger Games fan that says they didn’t enjoy the games aspect and the entire build up to it is a big fat liar because that’s why they picked up the book to begin with.

The reason being that he's always ingested small amounts of poison in order to build up a resistance to them because he fears that someone (or people already have) will try to assassinate him either for his position or as revenge for the games.
    Its just a detail that, if it was in the books and I'm not miss remembering, was a good piece of character building

      Nah he takes poison so people aren't sus of him while he poisons someone else, like "i drank from this so it's safe guys!". He would then take an antidote, but they don't completely work so he got sores in his mouth, and probably lips.

    I'm assuming someone on patreon would've explained, but in the books (and this is never in the movies) Haymitch pitches Gail as Katniss' cousin to make the love story with Peta seem more believable so that they'd get more sponsors and win the game. So from the first game on, the public believes Gail is Katniss' cousin and blood family to keep the illusion of her love with Peta alive. (They aren't actually related at all though)
    51:27 yeah, and in the books Peta lost his leg (I love the movies but I wish they'd kept that bit of representation)

    Every District has a Victor's Village. The one we see is in District 12. It's something the Capitol wants the people of the districts to "aspire" to. All the other houses are empty. District 12 has only had four winners in the history of the games. The winner of the 10th games is no longer around. Haymitch has been doing the role of two mentors for 25 years, trying to keep both tributes alive and failing every time. He self medicates with alcohol. The alcohol and the game Katniss and Gale get outside the fence (outside the bounds of District 12) is considered contraband. The Peacemaker that is bagged by the new guy here is deemed too lenient by how he handled the District. One of them is turned into an Avox (has his tongue cut out and made a servant in the Capitol) but that storyline was cut from this movie. The person in the background that you said looked like Jim Carrey is an avox. I believe the weird outfit is an outward symbol of their disgrace.
    For the first Quarter Quell (25th games), they made the Districts vote for the tributes--meaning the people were forced to chose kids to die. For the second quarter quell, double the amount of tributes were sent (this is the year Haymitch won).
    why do i know all of this?

  • @jalen.0609
    @jalen.0609 6 месяцев назад +1

    as haymitch‘s games were the 50th anniversary, instead of 24 there was twice the amount of tributes. He survived by using the forcefield that threw an ax back at the only other person and the capitol saw that as an attack (him using a flaw in the system) so they killed his whole family

Just another reason to understand how monstrous the capitol truly is.

    Glad you guys are enjoying this series (and I'm a big fan of your reactions), but I'd like to offer one small suggestion: I hope you can stop thinking of these movies as "just some cheesy teenage YA action films" and dismissing your own investment/enjoyment of them. It kinda feels like you guys were expecting some lightweight silly films, and so you feel self-conscious (or even embarrassed) about actually caring about these characters/plots.
    Yes, this series happens to have a teenage protagonist (and a half-assed love triangle in the background), but at its core it's really a very harrowing parable about war, revolution, and the way societies crumble and reform. So I hope for the next two movies you can let yourselves just engage with the movies in front of you, rather than dismissing them as disposable "teenage" films.

    The more reactions I see reinforce how dirty these movies did Peeta. In actuality Peeta is silver tongued and incredibly strong, but kind and generous. I would argue there was never an actual love triangle. The way Katniss described and spoke of Peeta and Gale it was very clear Gale was friend zoned. Katniss was obsessed with Peeta’s arms and eyelashes.

    The reason in the books Katniss was able to 'see' the force field was because she could hear it. In the first book/movie when the supplies got blown up she damaged one of her ears and after the games the capital fixed her hearing but the fixed it a bit too much. So she has really good hearing sort of in one ear. Also FYI Peeta loses his leg in the first book because his leg was so damaged so the capitol cut it off.

    • @turtlesandmoreturtles4140
      @turtlesandmoreturtles4140 6 месяцев назад +3

      No, katniss lied about the hearing. She didn't want to reveal the weak spot to the capitol as that would allow them to make the shields better, so she lies and says they make a faint sound.

    You probably already know by the time I comment this but still, if you don´t know, Peeta´s family was abusive towards him, I don´t remember if he had siblings but in the first movie you can see his mother hit him because he burned the bread, and I´m not sure about his father, but yeah I don´t think they were exactly a lovely family that´s why he says nobody needs him.

    • @chanbang378
      @chanbang378 Год назад +4

      Yeah! The movies aren’t that clear but his family life isn’t great. They didn’t show how bad it was but when Peeta’s mother hit him in the books with the bread they were 11 and his mother didn’t just hit him like how the movies showed, she hit him with a metal kitchen tool and his eye was swelling up. The next day in school Katniss saw he was black and blue.
      Peeta does have siblings, he has two older brothers so he’s the youngest and Katniss points out how none of his brother’s volunteered for him like how she volunteered for her youngest sister. They just sat there and we know at least one is old enough to volunteer.
      We know the most about his dad book wise, he’s known to be kind and in the first book after Katniss and Peeta are chosen and they get to say goodbye to their families, Peeta’s dad actually goes to see Katniss after Katniss says goodbye to her mother, prim and then gale. Peeta’s dad is known to be a man of few words so he just sits there and then gives Katniss cookies and promises to make sure that her little sister is fed. It is really nice, but thinking about it… he went to visit the girl who was a ‘rival’ who had a chance of killing his son. We also know from what peeta told us that his father had a huge crush on Katniss’ mother but then she ran away with a ‘coal miner’ which is Katniss dad. So Peeta’s mother wasn’t who his dad loves and I think that put a huge strain in their family dynamic.
      It’s even more sad for Peeta after they won the first games, Katniss moves into the big victors village house full of support. She lives with there with her mother and Prim and sees Gale’s family a lot, obviously Katniss is still traumatised but she had people to be there for her. Peeta was completely alone, his family didn’t even come to live with him in his huge victors house. He was 16 and was left alone after being traumatised and nearly dying and he even just lost his leg completely and they left him by himself with no help and Katniss doesn’t know what peeta is doing because he seemed to distance himself completely from everything but he’d make bread to drop off to Haymitch and Katniss’ house. Katniss even notes later after the tour when her and Peeta are proper friends again that Peeta quickly goes to visit the bakery to drop something off and she goes with him and his conversation with his dad is very short and awkward.
      It’s no wonder peeta is so adamant on saving Katniss over himself, yes he has a crush on her and all, however it is true that he knows that her death would matter more to people than him. Her death would be awful on her family and they would struggle to look after themselves, they need her. Whereas with peeta, I’m sure they will still be sad. However they really don’t need him, his death doesn’t affect anyone really and you can tell by the stuff he says that he knows he’s not important to anyone and is never the first choice for people ever. Even with Haymitch being both of their mentors, he also always puts Katniss first, even though Haymitch tells Katniss that he likes Peeta more and how he’s too good for everyone. That was more why he was so wounded at the end of the first games when he found out everything was an act on Katniss side because it was the first time he felt like someone cared and put him first to live but then he found out it was fake and started to wonder if any of how she seemed to care about him was real.
      Sorry this was long… wow. I wrote a whole essay… oh well.

    Personally, I think both of the next two are both better on rewatch and more timely than ever. I also disagree that it should have been one movie, as then you will end up cutting some of the most important moments from each film just to get it into that 2 1/2 hour range. I still think this holds up as the strongest film, but the next two really go deep into what it takes to fight a war and it's costs.

    I mean it's definitely one of those things that went as long as it needed to. They change things from the books to the movies cut some characters out and such forth and I guarantee that it was people who read the books that rated the later movies lower. The movies went as long as they needed to. They went right up to the point where this overarching story ended and then went back in time to tell a previous story.
