Honestly, while this first movie is solid, the quality jumps MASSIVELY starting with the second film, and then stays that way for the rest of the films. It's one of the super-rare instances where "more money and success" actually equaled "better filmmaking and storytelling" for a series.

@@willpinaI would agree. I do like the first story better. It’s Katniss’s first time experiencing the life of the capitol and preparing the games, so everything we’re taking in she’s taking in for the first time too, and feels a lot more intense in the 74th games because she’s alone for a lot of it rather than in a big group.
Some directorial decisions made for the first movie however were very underwhelming. Peetas characterisation in the first movie wasn’t great, and this is a deliberate choice made by the director and it sucks, he comes across very meak and creepy in a lot of scenes. The shaky cam was also really annoying; and a lot of the camera work just didn’t compliment the film in the way I think they would’ve liked. In addition, the symbolism of the mockingjay pin in the first movie is completely gone and thrown away. She just finds this random pin in the hob, rather than what actually happened in the book which had so many layers to it.

Haymitchs games were a quarter quell. Instead of sending 24 tributes, they doubled it for special games and sent 48 tributes. Haymitch won by using the forcefield. Another tribute threw an axe at him which he ducked, and the axe hit the forcefield and flew right back at the other tribute. Snow was pissed and Haymitchs entire family got killed for his "trick". After that, he has been a mentor every year for 2 kids from D12. That means he's befriended, trained, and had to see 46 kids from his district die.

I never understood this snippet. Unlike katniss he didn't really cheat the system in anyway. I don't see how it would be different than him sneaking poison into their food or something.
Katniss literally forced their hand or they would have no winner. Maybe the book describes it better since I haven't read it but it just never made sense to me. Unless they somehow made it out to be that people might blame the capitol for the design instead of accepting it as tactical thinking on haymitch's part. That would make more sense.

    • @indica321
      @indica321 Год назад +42

@@marslara I think it's less so him cheating and more so him making the Capitol look stupid. Haymitch unknowingly used the Capitol's own invention against them. I can't imagine him being very cooperative after the fact either, which might've contributed to them killing his family. They murdered Johanna's family because she refused to be a prostitute. The only reason they let Finnick's family live was because he did what they asked. Peeta and Katniss were met with similar threats for using nightlock and forcing the Gamemakers to let them both win. Their families were spared (until the bombing, at least) because the two of them did what was asked in order to keep the people they loved alive.

The viewers were probably confused and mad that they didn't get to see a full-on boxing match, but instead, the last kill was a "secondhand" kill(Haymitch wasn't being tactical, he was driven to a cliff and just ducked the axe that was thrown at him). Especially when they had 46 kills before in the same game, some of them probably being brutal. Also back then Snow was pretty quick to just kill a victors family if they misbehaved. But Johanna is a good example of why that doesn't work.

Haymitch didn't exactly duck the axe more than he fell down because he was holding his hands over his stomach as his insides tried to become his outsides. Blood loss and very nearly losing his internal organs was what caused him to fall right in time for the axe to fly over him and rebound off the force field into the head of the tribute trying to kill him. Because the games are preordained in the sense that the more popular you are, the more people will bet on you to win, the more likely the game makers will work to make that happen and Haymitch wasn't part of that planned winner for the people, the Capitol retaliated by killing everyone he loved because he had the audacity to survive when they didn't plan for him to.

Regarding the arena stuff, the gamemakers have no issue killing contestants if they are trying to make a "moment" kind of like reality tv is totally cool messing with peoples heads for that "golden breakdown moment". The movie leaves out a good amount of background about the games from passive convos that were cut. But they mention that more people usually die to the arena conditions and/or traps than kills since the contestants are usually not that into killing each other.
Like its mentioned one year the "ratings" were really bad because they decided to do a frozen tundra style arena but it was basically just people sitting around freezing to death after the first day or so, so they were like "nope not doing that again" like a failed TV show pilot. Or how in one year the game wasn't going fast enough so they decided to just do a Noah's arc level flood and the winner only won because they were able to tread water the longest.
So the arena is super unfair, but there is also a very heavy media/reality TV angle that the author was trying to portray in the books. She just found it so messed up that we are willing to mess with people for "moments", "entertainment", and "ratings" that it felt a bit like the Roman coliseum to her and was like what if I take modern tech and sensibilities and take it to the extreme where entertainment circles back to the Roman days.

During the pre-games training montage, we see her identifying a bunch of wild plants on a screen and doing quite well, so she probably knew what they were. She had survived to that point by avoiding combat and being smart and sneaky, but sooner or later one of the other tributes would've found her, or she would've been eaten by the dogs. Katniss is the 1st volunteer from district 12. The dogs at the end are engineered with dead tribute DNA to resemble them in the books like similar colored fur and eyes. Haymitch also won the 50th Hunger Games. This one was a "Quarter quell" and is special. His games had double the amount of tributes, so 48 kids instead of 24 particpated. The movie does a poor job of explaining what happened to district 13, but after the 1st rebellion the Capitol bombed them and destroyed them. Now there are only 12 districts.

Some of the more messed up things they left out of the movie - from what I remember, they bioengineered the dogs with the kids who had already died. So you could tell exactly which dog was who. And then the dogs didn’t kill Cato quickly. Peeta and Katniss had to listen to his screams for hours before Katniss finally shot him out of pity.

      2. Peeta's father saying goodbye to Katniss and promising that he'll never let her family starve and giving her cookies which was considered expensive
      3. Her school flashbacks and trips to the forest with her father
      4. How peeta made sure that the girl tribute is really dead.
      5. Rue making medicine for katniss using her saliva
      6. Katniss losing her hearing until after the games.
      7. Peeta getting severe infection resulting to his whole leg getting amputated.
      8. Peeta not receiving any parachutes despite him being the more desirable.
And many otherrr. I wish they renew this and make it into a series where they show every tiny details. I would've loved it.

As a result, she's not used to a metal bow. In the book she uses arrow after arrow until she has it down during that assessment and *then* fires the arrow at the apple.
I'm fine with how the movie does it too. She's surprised she missed and immediately corrects herself with her second shot. It's quick and shows what it needs to: her talent and power with a bow.

@@whenraindropsfall if I remember correctly, this was a scene out of the hunger games book. Katniss at least thinks they're the other tributes, because each Mutt has the hair and eye color and size relative to the other wolves that matches a specific tribute, and they all also have a collar matching the theme and number of the district of each respective tribute. She identifies at least 5 (Glimmer, Rue, Thresh, Foxface and the Boy from District 9).
This wasn’t revisited in the next movies nor the books.

Don't know if anyone told u, but Peeta loses his leg after the Hunger Games in the book. @ the end, Cato looked all messed up because he had fought Thresh (the big black guy from Rue's District). None of the participants r suppose to be trained for the Hunger Games, but those Districts closest to the Capitol, the wealthier districts, do & actually do believe it a great honor to participate in the games. I believe Cato was from District 1 & knife throwing girl was from District 2, they were tall & athletic in build. In the book, Katniss is actually quite petite because she was malnourished. O, & Katniss actually wanted to blow up all those supplies. Cato & the group of kids following them had horded all the supplies: food, medicine, sleeping bags, & etc. which meant they had no survival skills. Without all that stuff, they were as good as dead. In the book, the explosion was so big that it caused Katniss to lose the hearing in one ear. After she & Peeta won, they were given medical attention. Somehow they repaired her hearing, but could not save Peeta's leg. @ that interview after the games, Peeta was wearing a prosthetic leg in the book. Also, in the book, Peeta really does have feelings for Katniss. Katniss does not know how she feels about him, & did play up their romance for the cameras in order to survive, also convincing herself that Peeta was doing the same.. Gale, the "boyfriend" back home, also had feelings for Katniss, but she really didn't know how she felt about him either. Katniss's father died in a mining explosion a month/more before her 1st Reaping. Her mother went into a deep depression after he died checking out completely. Katniss had to take it uppon herself to care for her then 8yr old sister. When Peeta threw her that bread in the rain, it literally saved her & her family's lives. Anyway, it was an entertaining reaction. I will be looking for u reacting to the next one.

Everyone who reacts to this movie says the same thing of taking all of the bags at the cornucopia, but you have to remember there are several problems with that. First of all if you take someone else stuff they will hunt you down, and in Katniss case she can't afford that since she can't protect Peeta if Cato, Clove and Thresh would come after her to get their stuff. Second of all the Capitol/Gamemakers want a show right, and someone just stealing stuff and running away with it would not be a good show. They have already punished her with the fire so taking the chance of them being pissed off at her after stealing other bags is not a good choice. She actually remarks on how smart Foxface is for hiding inside the cornucopia and running away, because she can get away before the rest of them even gets to the bags.

Fun fact, wasps actually do pollinate, just not very much, especially compared to the bees. However, due to the rapid bee decline, conservationists suggest protecting the wasps to try to help mitigate the loss of bees.
Also, wasps are actually chill as long as you stay away from their nests and move slowly when they're around (they communicate aggression through quick wingbeat speed and perceive a person's fast movement as hostility). You can keep them away by leaving out something sweet away from where you are as well as leaving up old nests or paper bags as decoy nests around your property to deter them (they don't reuse nests and avoid other colonies nests even if they're empty). Colonies die out by the end of autumn (except for future queens, who freeze until spring, but they usually go elsewhere when they wake up), so if you get a nest, don't be afraid to leave it there until they die out and keep the nest up after to deter them next spring. If you do ever need to get rid of a nest, sneak up on them at night when they're sleeping/resting and knock them into a container with a lid and leave it somewhere until they relax before opening the container and fuckin bookin it in the other direction (they'll be absolutely pissed you fucked with their house).
Sorry for the fuckin science paper, I'm a stoned nerd and I love these little guys. They get a bad wrap, but they're actually fairly chill as long as you're chill

OK first off, I just want to say that I really loved this reaction. You all have great reactions, commentary, and vibes, and you're jokes are great!
All that said, I've got a bone to pick with you about the way ya'll talk about wasps*. They are fascinating animals that are very important to the ecosystem. They dont only eat caterpillars and crickets - though those are animals that need to be kept in check. Many species of wasp also eat flies, roaches, spiders and other bugs that are considered less desirable (though of course all of them have their value). Indeed, the wasp is known to some as the gardener's best friend - without them "pest" control would be a much more difficult endeavor. Some gardeners even grow plants that are known to attract wasps for that express purpose! Many wasps are also pollinators, believe it or not, although they admittedly don't do nearly as much as bees do.
And yes, (at least some) wasps CAN recognize human faces! And that can certainly be intimidating - pissing off a wasp is even less desirable once you know that they can hold a grudge - But it's actually very cool, and not just for scientific reasons. Because if a wasp can recognize your face and remember that you attacked its nest, who's to say that it can't remember you for being respectful and posing little threat?
It's difficult to find studies on the matter and truthfully It's difficult to find studies on wasps in general, something that I suspect has to do with their unfairly poor reputation. However, there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that wasps can be befriended, or at least that more positive relationships can be formed between humans and wasp colonies. Ultimately it seems to me as if the best rule of thumb for interacting with wasps is that old rule we were taught back in kindergarten; "treat others as you wish to be treated" (atleast assuming you're a hermit who needs a bit of extra space between you and the rest of the world lol). If you lash out in fear they'll probably do the same, but if you stay calm and respectful of their space, ive found that they might just match your energy.
Alllright, long wasp rant over. I understand if you didn't read all that, but if you did, i hope you learned something and maybe even enjoyed yourself! if you didn't enjoy it... Sorry? anyway, I really was genuine about enjoying this video; it was a lot of fun! I'll have to see if you've done reactions to the other Hunger Games movies yet - if not, I'd love to see some!
    Have a good day, ya'll!
P.S: this whole comment was intended to be lighthearted and all in good fun - I have no intention to come off as rude or mad, and I sincerely apologize if I do! (Genuinely)
    * There are a ton of animals with a lot of diversity in this category, but for the sake of this comment i'm going to be focusing mostly on eusocial wasps such as yellow jackets and hornets (im pretty sure that's mostly what ya'll were thinking of anyway)
