The reason this movie got hate was that it was marketed ATROCIOUSLY, it literally looked like all of Pixars most tired tropes with none of their strengths. I honestly couldn't believe how good it was when I saw it, I genuinely thought it would be a trainwreck from the marketing. I mean yeah, its not reinventing the wheel, but it does what it set out to do extremely well.

Pretty much all the marketing I saw for it were the two scenes of Clod. It didn’t even show Wade in those ads I saw. The marketing literally set this movie up to fail, and it’s not the first time this has happened.

The water and fire contact is based on a real scientific effect. It's where water of a lower temperature comes into contact with a heat source that is much hotter than normal, mostly past the boiling point. Called leidenfrost effect, you can see this happen if you take your hand covered in cold water soaked in it for a while where its freezing cold, but then quickly dunk it in something hot. You can even do this with molten lead even and all you do is like a quick dunk, drop in and pull out so fast, it's less than a second, your hand is fine. Dry even if you took a 'little' longer than normal. It creates a steam effect that acts a barrier between the two insane temperature sources, almost making it glide across it even.

Wade and Ember's love story is amazing because it really is relatable. The two of them come from very different upbringings and not just because they are different elements. Ember comes from a family of immigrants that had to work hard and get everything they have from scratch, all while having to suffer from prejudice. Meanwhile, Wade comes from a wealthy family and never had to endure the same level of prejudice and struggles Ember had. But even though, both of them were able to actually complement each other and give one another what they needed respectivelly. Wade helped Ember realize the source of her temper thanks to his empathy and inspired her to pursue her dream and solver her issues with her father, since he couldn't do the same with his. Meanwhile, Ember gave Wade what he needed since he was struggling to find his way, as he was having a hard a time to find a job that he could actually keep and was haunted by the regret of not enjoying his time with his dad. The struggles that their relationship had felt extremely realistic, even more than most Disney couples.

Ember's struggle hits so hard. Not all people have like a job to take over after parents but MANY people struggle not to ruin their image in parents eyes. They fear it so much because brain mostly leads right away to worst case scenerio ,,I'm a bad daughter" or thinking parents would disown them for doing something they struggle to accept. Yeah kids mostly direct fault at themselves instead realizing that parent's wrong view of something is actual problem not kid's problem. It's sad how parents don't want to accept some things or work through it and just blame the child. Kids fear of being left alone in life if they do something that parents wouldn't accept. It's for sure different if friend is lost because of something. Family and parents should be supporting and not give signals like ,,We support you unless you... (something they have bad view of)" and scare kids about not accepting them if they choose different path or do something unusual.

Exactly. Ember's dad never outright said you can't pursue anything else, but he created an environment in which she didn't feel comfortable expressing her true feelings. That is entirely the dad's fault. That is why most of the movie I was mad at him.

Their formal wear is similar, except instead of metal, the little panels are made out of stained glass, so their fancy outfits make the people look like beautiful lanterns. Practical AND stylish!

I was interested when seeing the trailer, never giving a damn about them haters and their pointless videos before the film was even out. Saw it twice, the second time with my mom, who also was interested and loved it. Thank you for the reaction! Glad you enjoyed!
Fun facts: there's a deleted scene where they did show Ember and Wade with a cloud baby. Also, even though it was made under Disney, everything Pixar will NOT include a parent's death. As far as I know from the films I've seen before, it's highly rare to impossible for that idea to come up. Especially when Pixar and Disney were separate companies before Disney got the rights, and only Walt Disney Pictures held on to that idea in relation to Walt's past.
And Ruff, my man, *YES!! PLEASE* HAVE THEM WATCH BRAVE!!

But in the end the movie was more deep and well animated. I personally love how they conceptualized the world of 4 elements people being literal but also creative in their daily lifestyle. Elemental is about immigration, being the first gen child of an immigrant family, and the expectations, sacrifices, and pressure that come with that. It got so much hate by people who didn't see it because they thought it was a typical fire/water love story when it's not. There were also people who completely missed the point of the movie and claimed it was racist because they used opposing elements to depict a mixed couple. The marketing definitely did it dirty by advertising it (at all) as just a love story.

This movie is awesome and has some amazing themes! Not only was it about diversity and mixing it was also about immigrants settling in a new world. Raising a 1st gen and trying to keep their culture while also growing surrounded in a melting pot of other cultures. Interracial couples forming and getting to know each others cultures and accepting things. I am a 1st gen on my Dad's side, he was an interracial couple with my Mom. They had to deal with a lot of racism, and even in more modern times. Growing up in 90's and early 2000's I had to deal with racism for being a mixblood. It felt so different seeing my Dad's culture and my Mom's culture. This movie did so well representing the issues people deal with in these scenarios. I will say I didn't know about this movie till a month after it came out so I can totally get it flopping cause of marketing failure. am i the only one who felt like there might have been suicide allegories with Ember? like it definately felt like she could’ve been depressed from supressing her true personality and wants in order to please her dad, and whenever she talked about it or it was brought up by someone else, she either got super defensive and hardcore deflected or her flame went super far down like when she was talking to Wade at the beach. i feel like that might be what depression would look like to a fire person. there was also the time after that when Wade was trying to make her cry and he said the thing about him wanting to be close to her light because it makes him feel alive, Ember thought about how, no matter how badly she wanted to touch him and be with him, it could never work, and that made her tear up.
now about the suicidal feeling. the moment after her mom did their readings when her dad came to tell them he's retiring, when he revealed the sign, when her mom and dad left her alone and she started crying because she knew she was trapped, the very next scene was her giving the glass ball wth the flower in it back to Wade. they say that when you’re contemplating suicide, you start to give up your posessions, even the ones that mean the most to you, because you know you no longer have a use for them. the moment when Wade asked "Why are you giving me gifts?" and gave his little "oh no..." my heart instantly sunk and i started to fear for her life. i also thought there was no way a Pixar movie would actually go there so i rewound that scene multiple times to analize it and i realized that he was just worried she was gonna end things with him. but the feeling was still there. then later in the next scene, when Wade takes her to the Vivisteria tree, he says "I know you think you have to end this, but..." I know that, again, he ment their relationship, but i just couldn’t shake that feeling. after they touched for the first time, she remembered her dad and the shop and everything he did and was doing for her and she felt guilty and ashamed that she wasnt making her dad proud and being the daughter that he wanted her to be, and that she couldn’t have both Wade and her father's approval at the same time, so she went against her own self-interest, something she's more than used to by now, and ended things with Wade. then later, after Ember tells Wade she doesn’t love him at the party, she rides away on her motorcycle to a lookout point. as she gets up from sitting on the bench and starts walking towards the ledge, the same thought came into my mind and i began to worry again. this seemed like the lowest point for her. if there was ever a time for her to attempt it would be then. of course, this being a Pixar movie, I knew better, but i still cant shake the feeling that there was something deeper going on inside her head.

12:26 I love how Wade is animated so that you can see some things through him, but not his eyes or the inside of his mouth looking at the back of his head, and his skin distortedly reflects objects and light too. The animation and worldbuilding in this movie is INSANE!!!

42:21 I love the message that Ember "lights Wade up" and gives him the "fire" he needs to fight for what and who he loves; and he "refocuses her" and makes her vivacity "burn brighter."
She's literally the light in his eyes in many of the most beautiful shots in the whole movie. He's never committed to one job or one thing in his life before, until he met Ember and fell in love with her. Though it was tough to get her to open up to him and take the risk to be involved with him, he persistently pursued her and showed her nothing but love and respect. Once she was how empathetic and non-judgmental he is, she accepted his influence and his affection. Wade reminds her that it's ok to have dreams and want to live for your own aspirations instead of ones predetermined for you. And Ember inspires him to unleash his passion for the people he loves, and not to give up on that love without a fight.

It’s interesting cuz the movie is directed by a Korean man who was injecting his own experience into the story. One could argue that westerners aren’t interested/can relate to the Asian or Asian immigrant experience in ways the actual continent’s audience could.
But it’s more likely the fault of piss poor advertising and the fact it came around the time of other movies like Spiderverse, that hurt the box office.
Really, most films bombed this year, with only a few exceptions. If the writers strike keeps going (and I know VFX are starting to unionize), then we should expect more bombs for a while.

I like this movie. It definitely had better marketing than Strange World and had a great recovery at the box office. I just wish the trailer didn't focus so much on the love story. The story of an immigrant family trying to live their lives in a new country and dealing with prejudice was always the better story and it's the reason why so many people got into this movie in the first place.

In all fairness, all those rules are there for a reason and it could be a matter of health and safety if people violated them. There may be a difference in the residence of a fire person but you’d need to form a committee just to find new perimeters, but we’ve astonished that fire people don’t really interact with the rest of Element City.

I hate seeing all the hate for Elemental when I personally loved this movie. The movie was even inspired by the director's family's immigration and what they faced. Sure the animation is great, but they were able to tell a story in a way that it wasn't overwhelming the audience. I've seen some people criticizing Ember's dilemma over taking over the shop and following her dream and couldn't tell her parents. While you can argue that she could of just told them, most people seek approval from their parents and can't just communicate. Honestly this movie is just able to show the character's personalities pretty well without explaining everything to you

I found the romantic story really sweet, and hearing your discussions did make me realise a lot more about the undertones of the film. But I do agree with Boom that the leak was not their problem, the wall being broken is more something the city should've resolved immediately given the fatal overall threat it had towards Fire Town as a whole. They kinda got me with the Wade death too, I mean I doubted but they pushed it very close.
Still, it's good that it got more shine post-release, I was very much poorly marketed it was one of those films where you got like 2 trailers and then months of nothing and suddenly it had been out for a few weeks, but people also were quick to write it off. Overall though it had heart so it's good that it got a second wind.
A lot of effort did go into the worldbuilding, they even made an entire language and writing system for the fire people.

It's similar to this one in that a kid watching it will enjoy the aesthetics and basic adventure story, but teens and adults watching it will be like "whoa." Inside Out 2 is set to premiere June 2024.

See the thing is, Bernie more or less started Fire Town himself. The town in the beginning was populated by Water and Earth based Elementals it wasn't until Bernie built his shop that Fire Elementals began to populate it, and become Fire Town. As you might notice Fire Town is VERY far away from Element City. It's not so much that they are being discriminated against but it's mostly that fire people keep to themselves because to all the other elements they are more harmful than they are helpful at the time.

The criticisms I heard ranged from "It's too woke" to "It's not woke enough". As well as people saying the racist allegories don't work since fire is legitimately dangeros. Watching the movie myself, I don't think Pixar were trying to send any kind of message with this film. There were obvious pokes and parellals to real-life racism/discrimination, but the movie wasn't about that, it wasn't trying to be woke or change peoples' minds or anything, it's literally just "this is a world where the elements are people and and Fire girl falls in love with a Water guy". Fire legitimately being dangerous is a problem that only exists in the world of this movie, and that's not a bad thing. You can still recognise the little inclusions of real-world discrimination and seperate that from the fantasy element.
The best example of how the film touches on discrimination, but isn't ABOUT discrimination, is probably the scene where Wade's uncle(?) comments on how well Ember talks. It's such a collar-tugging moment but it passes quick and the characters just move on from it.

    • @BelBelle468
      @BelBelle468 10 месяцев назад

I think the fire thing is in relation to the fact that water, air, and earth elementals naturally get along but they refuse fire
Rather it’s about how they treat fire ppl and not that fire ppl are dangerous. They don’t want to accommodate and perceive fire as a danger
It’s using elementals to speak on discrimination and immigration as a whole

I think the issue this film had is it came out a time when people were sick of being preached too about social issues and it sounded from the marketing like it was going to be super woke and preachy so it didn't get well received. Then some people actually saw it when it came out and realized it is pretty much what Pixar has always done take social elements (migrants, racism, generational conflict etc) and address them in a traditional and well done story. Once that word of mouth started reaching people they came back to it and enjoyed it because it is what a film should be an exploration of things that let the audience can figure it out for themselves. A bit more in your face than normal but not enough to bother anyone who isn't looking for a reason to hate it given its intended market was younger viewers. I mean it had all three of you in tears at the end and that's the mark of a good film, well eliciting emotions depending on what that emotion is.
