36:29 honestly their deaths are so sad. They were siblings and won just after one another. Gloss was a career and volunteered but in the games he realized how terrible it actually was and afterwards refused to cooperate with the capitol (prostitution etc.). Instead of killing his family like they did with Haymitch or Johanna, the organized it so that his sister would get reaped the following games. It kinda backfired because her brother was her mentor and would do anything to keep her alive and the audience loved her because they had a story of two siblings winning the games just after one another. Those games she hunted down all the other tributes and after a single night she was crowned the victor of her hunger games.
Imagine what their family had to go through watching first their son and then their daughter being reaped. I mean they both won but still... and then imagine how terrible it must’ve been for them to be reaped again when they thought they were finally safe. And then their family had to watch them die within seconds after one another. Actually I’m glad that they died almost at the same time so they didn’t have to grief and instead died together...

Peeta was my favourite character from the books and I feel like the movies kinda downplay the importance he has on the games because it's more focused on the action. He isn't a fighter, his strengths lie on his people skills. He's aware of the importance of optics from the get go and he's a great compliment to Katniss because she's terrible at it. He gives the public reasons to like them, he maintains alliances when Katniss wants to cut them and he pulls a lot of strings. Also in the books the injuries they get on the first games are worse, I think Katniss has trouble hearing on one ear for the rest of the story and Peeta loses part of his leg, so that's why he is even more vulnerable. You don't get that in the movie because they decided to cut that out.

One of the reasons also why they are so protective of Peeta in this movie was removed from the book to screen. Peeta is supposed to lose most of his leg in the first games so he would have trouble getting around let alone defending himself. I'd have to disagree on Peeta being weak or 'being a little bitch' (which is an awful phrase fyi). He straight from the get go puts his life aside to focus, with Haymitch, on saving Katniss; he bravely befriends a bunch of psychos in order to keep and eye on them and protect Katniss when necessary, he gets stabbed defending Katniss after the Tracker Jacker attack then managed to get away himself while also taking the time to disguise himself for who knows how long; then he is injured for a while which I assume is where people assume he's 'weak' although I have to say if their positions had been swapped I don't think the same thing would have been said about Katniss, he then is able to escape mutts and fight off Cato. That's pretty strong to me.

Yh, I can totally understand why people come away from the movies seeing peeta as weak though. but as a book fan I don’t either it just depends on which version of the hunger games we are talking about. (I would say the same for pretty much any book to movie adaptation. In Harry Potter for example, Snape is a vindictive bully with one redeeming quality in the books, and in the movies he is just a highly sarcastic but ultimately noble teacher... the list goes on lol)

They call Peeta “useless” and “weak” because Katniss and Peeta have switched traditional gender roles. People are used to seeing men as the protagonists and the saviors which is what Katniss does when she goes back and saves and nurses Peeta to health. Peeta loves baking while Katniss loves to hunt. Peeta is very good at communication and showing his feelings while Katniss is more closed off and isn’t great at expressing how she feels. They switched traditional gender roles, which is something the author admits to do. But Peeta isn’t worthless. Peeta holds his own in many other ways.

    • @Ivy94F
      @Ivy94F 2 года назад +31

Also, we have to remember that Peeta and Katniss came from different classes within their district. Peeta was more middle class. His parents owned a bakery and they didn’t have to hunt for their food or do anything that would cultivate survival techniques in the wilderness like katniss’ family. He’s out of his element the same way katniss is out of her element when she has to play politics or be the star.

There was SO MUCH more emphasis on Peeta's character arc in the books than the movies. (Peeta lost his leg in THG, which made it difficult for him to move and there was more plot focus on him that got cut in the movies.) While Katniss was the face of the revolution (because she was the one who did the berries and physical actions), Peeta was the heart of it because everyone just loved him as a wholesome person. Katniss kinda sucked with her wording in the books at times due to being quieter. Audience love for Peeta showed with the readers too; Peeta, Prim, and Finnick were probably the top fan-favorite characters solely for their "innocence" and "purity" if you will. When I read the books, I LOVED Peeta and was heartbroken at what happened to him in Mockingjay.

in the book there’s more of an emphasis on how they needed both peeta and katniss cuz even though she’s the face of the revolution and her actions resonate with the public she was never good at expressing or with words as peeta was (which you can see when he does the speech for rue and thresh) so yes it was vital to get katniss out it was also vital to get peeta which is why they were protecting them both, i sorta see it as katniss being the face of the revolution while peeta is the heart or the brain

Those birds were jabberjays which were made by the capital to spy on the districts. But they figured it out so the capital left them to die but instead they mated with mockingbirds, which is where mockingjays came from. So 1. Mockingjays are a bit of a middle finger to the capital and 2. In that scene they were using their own birds against the mockingjay (Katniss). Katniss, like the mockingjays is a result of the capitals own actions and was never meant to exist. ❤️👌

One major theme throughout the series (which is especially prevalent in the next two films), is the use of social and war propaganda to help persuade the masses. Suzanne Collins' dad was in the Vietnam War which is well known for sparked controversies due to a s**t ton of war propaganda from both sides. What I love about this series is how manipulative government powers can be in using symbolic pawns/manipulated victims for public favor towards their causes. I think this is a super relevant theme in real life today, what with the toxic political climate of company or government funded news media outlets spreading their rhetoric, slander, hyperbole, and sometimes misinformation against the "other" sides.
Suzanne had inspiration from reading Greek mythology in her childhood, which she mixed with obvious Roman/imperialistic undertones. the examples from "Plutarch's Life of Theseus" is most prominent, where Crete (like the Capitol) demanded retribution from Athens, resulting in a cycle where every so many years, 7 young maidens and men would have to be offered to feed the Cretan labyrinth's minotaur. Otherwise, Crete would wage war and crush Athens. Katniss destroying the forcefield could be seen as Theseus killing the minotaur (bringing an end to the sacrificial cycle) what makes Katniss so inspirational is that, though she is not a goddess/mythical hero, her publicized trials and tribulations inspired Panem in a mythical way. Her character's example of naturalism in its purest form, that is, beautiful in all of its imperfections, juxtaposed against the shimmering facade of the Capitol's "idealistic" high society is what brings power to this micro, first-person vision within a large-scale revolution.
Collins also got the base concept of The Hunger Games universe when flipping between channels that aired flamboyant reality t.v. shows, and then gruesome coverage of the Iraq war. Panem = Bread et (and) circuses (entertainment), both of which is being supplied by the Districts for the Capitol's benefit.
Sorry if this was a long read, I could go on lol, but I don't want to spoil anything. This is just some food for thought as you go into the next two movies. Hope you enjoy!

One thing I feel they didn't touch on as much in this film as they did in the book was that most the victors have built bonds with each other over the years after the games because they were mentors for the new tributes and would have time to interact during the Hunger Games every year. Their individual stories are all tragic but the book does a great job fleshing out each previous victor who would be involved in the Quarter Quell which I believe they did mention in the film as well but the twist for each Quarter Quell was written by the government when they started the Hunger Games 75 years prior. It is possible that Snow changed out the card but he is also shown to be more tactical than that and I feel if he would have altered the game it would be to keep Katniss out of the arena

  • @MTech07

Something very underrated about the game maker (I can´t remember his name in the books) is that whatever he proposes to Snow is twofold. Something that seems an intelligent move but is detrimental to The Capitol. if all districts start suffering more, there is more reason to feel connected. More repression gives you the feeling that what else can you lose? Your family? I'd rather fight if that will be the outcome regardless of what I do. Also, he judged Katniss much better than Snow did. She is an honourable person. Honourable people tend to do the right thing when the situation demands. She can't lie. He saw it at the dance. She is unwilling to play games. So push her to the limit, and she will become a symbol of rebellion because it is what she is. You can only guess this if you are wise and have seen different people in different contexts.

I understand how some people saw Peeta as kind of pathetic in the first book, but you have to look at the undertones. He was a fantastic PR man, his interview showed humor, depth, and connection in the first movie that was completely fake (except for the actually liking Katniss part) and succeeded in manipulating the careers to give Katniss a chance to find her way out of it. And in the end fight, he was invaluable. Yes, he ended up in a chokehold but he really showed his strength when he tossed Cato through the air and then proceeded to hold his own against a dude with a sword barehanded. Katniss saves Peeta many times in very obvious ways but he saves her in the smaller and more subtle ways.

Also, they played up him being the third wheel in her love triangle. That I think they did with the idea of the trilogy being a thing. Him appearing so weak in the beginning would give them more room to build him up through the story towards the ending. Still, the whole series is such an awesome set of movies considering they came from books. So many times they just cheap out hoping to cash in on the fans of the book watching it.

I don't think effie is oblivious, i think she knows exactly what she's doing and that is the reason she is how she is. In a fucked up society like that, having to watch young children be murdered (district 12 had had only 3 winners) she does her best to cheer than up before their imminent death. But it's different with katnisss, she has hope just as much as haymitch have. That's why her voice is so broken when calling katniss name again.

Ahh! Your title is definitely not hyperbole. I think the Hunger Games kind of set the standard for new age dystopian book-to-movie adaptations cause they were extremely popular, but also just good/great movies in general. Especially, Catching Fire! And the "I need you" scene is so beautiful with the scenery, the dialogue, the score. I get all the feels!

Catching Fire is the best movie out of the trilogy and my favorite. I love the movie so much better than the first movie. The only thing I wished we could’ve seen in the movie is a scene from the book where Katniss runs into two women wearing Peacekeeper uniforms and they reveal that they’re from District 13. It would’ve been so cool to see that but the movie is still really good and very entertaining to watch. It’s been so long since I’ve watched this movie.

I only recently found you guys, so I'm going through and watching some of your older stuff. I just have to say - that edit of Johanna stripping in the elevator straight to Katniss saying "move your hands down" was masterful 🤣. I wasn't looking at the screen at that moment and was like, "I don't remember her saying that to Haymitch." 🤣🤣🤣

i love this series but yalls commentary definitely makes this better. u two often have very different reactions but on the same wavelength, and getting to listen to u two analyze this series is so fun. i used to love this book when i was little and this reminds me exactly why
