  • LULU SADLER CRAIG(12 August 1868 - 25 September 1972), educator, writer, community leader, was born Lulu Mae Sadler, in Platte County, Missouri, to her mother, Harriet
Ellen Samuels and her father, Merriday George Sadler, former slaves. As a young man,
Lulu’s father fought for his freedom with General Sherman and the Union in the Civil War.
At the age of four, Lulu moved with her family to Kansas from Missouri. In 1878,
at ten years old, Lulu came to Nicodemus, Kansas, founded in 1877, with her parents and
seven siblings via covered wagon. Nicodemus was once a prosperous all Black colony in
northwestern Kansas founded by a group of “Exodusters” - former slaves who left the
south and migrated to Kansas. In pursuit of a better life Lulu’s family was among the
early settlers lured to the Kansas plains by promises of free land and freedom from the
racism that continued to prevail during the reconstruction period. With lots of
anticipation her family arrived in Nicodemus only to find a secluded, windswept prairie.
The only signs of life were stovepipes level to the ground. To Lulu’s dismay, the
residents lived in dugouts, like cellars, dug vastly into the ground with a cover over it.
If not for the dugouts the Nicodemus residents might have frozen to death and
fortunately no snow could get inside. Kansas winters were rough and wood was scarce. In
their underground iron stoves, the Sadlers like the other residents had to burn roots,
wheat, sunflowers and cornstalks, and anything else they could find to stay warm.
Lulu and her family survived under tough conditions. They had no plows so they
used their hands for planting. Food was scarce. The Sadlers and other
horses and wagons, would travel long distances to other towns to ask for donations of
food and supplies for their community.

OMG! To be that sharp and and have such clear and strong voice at the age of 102, after what I imagine must have been a pretty hard life. Never seen anything like it.

She is not the character Jane Pittman that Cecily Tyson played. Remember the title is "A Real Jane Pittman" not "The" meaning her life represented that in like manner and age and time. Jane Pittman was a fictional character.

She is based upon important Black women in the authors Ernest Gaines life. He lived in Louisiana with his aunts and other elders until he went to California with his parents.

My great great grandmother did too..bout 109/110 she died in the 70s early 80s maybe but she was Chickasaw/Cherokee native American..she was born 1889 ...her parents where in the trail of tears. She was kicked off the reservation for marrying a mullato man and moved from Alabama to Savannah Georgia in 1913. I can trace my blood line to 1835.

Pittman was her real name this woman name is Lou Lou Craig???... My Family Ancestors are the real Pittmans from Mississippi. My Great Grandmother married Jeff Pittman( My Great Grandfather) who was ASSASINATED for not willfully giving up his property/Land, that was taken from his family and forced off their property, to move in plantation homes where they worked for very little money as (Slaves) after the WAR!!!
THEY WERE CLASSIFIED AS INDIANS ..CHANGED TO FREEDMANS, AND BLACKS TO HIDE OUR TRUE HISTORY!!
Its really sad how these people take our History, Rewrite It, Lie and Deceive you right in front of your face!...
I AM SO GLAD I KNOW MY TRUE HISTORY THANKS TO MY GRANDMOTHER WHO LIVED TO SEE 100 HUNDRED YEARS AND SHARED THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO THE PITTMANS! I HOPE THIS WILL HELP OTHERS TO GO AND DO THEIR OWN RESEARCH AND FIND OUT THEIR TRUE HISTORY ,THROUGH ANCESTRY AND CENSUS. IN ORDER TO GET A TRUE PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR FAMILY HISTORY SO WE CAN PUT THE PAST TO REST!!!!! #Acestry.com
