    Being religious doesn't make him idiotic or stupid. Everyone has their beliefs. And I can respect him for being open about it. Whether or not I agree with his beliefs, he's awesome and his videos are awesome. Anyone who unsubscribes just because of this video is the ignorant and close-minded one.

      I definitely wont unsubscribe because of this but it does make me question why, and why mormonism? I dont think just because he considers himself a religious person it should disqualify anything, but on the other hand im not gonna refrain from questioning his thoughts just because they fall under the umbrella of religion. Either stance is stupid.

      It certainly does not make him idiotic. In his video's Shad has shown himself to have a bright and critical mind. I do find this brilliance to be hard to reconcile with being religious at all. But then religious peoples' ways are highly mysterious to me.

    • @Likexner
      @Likexner 4 года назад +4

      @@renshan3657 I would just like to point out that it often happens that even the brightest critical thinkers simply have one thing that they set aside that they dont apply their usual scrutiny to. Its almost like humans have an intrinsic need to strongly believe in something that they themselves would at least question or doubt if someone else told it to them.

      @@Likexner I know, it's most likely because he grew up in the Mormon community and was heavily invested in it before develloping his current critical mindset. I suppose we all have these notions that we grew up with and take for granted. This kind of makes me wonder what mine are.

    I feel bad about all those posts about "stupid religion". As an agnostic I believe that life's goal is happiness. If Shad feels happier as a Mormon, who the hell am I to judge? What won't cause harm, doesn't deserve harm. Just stay open-minded, and let it be.

      kikiwako I feel too many people make a fuss about religion. I personally am an atheist, but the fact that Shad is Morman doesn't negate the quality of his videos. He is nonetheless a great content creator whether or not he is religious and people should just calm down a bit.

      @OriginalTharios If Shad were making claims about objective reality, I'd agree. But he isn't. He's choosing to believe this for his own sake, for whatever reasons he has. Shad is clearly not a man to deny science, if you watch his other content.

    • @ginge641
      @ginge641 5 лет назад +3

      @OriginalTharios If you want to do a long counter-argument, feel free. I also despise organised religion to its core, but I think it's always important to consider the individual believer. Shad doesn't appear to be making stupid claims about reality or denying science, so this faith seems to work just fine for him. Also, bare in mind that this acceptence of religion on an individual is very recent and based on a recent read of a really good fantasy novel that might have finally made this idea click for me.

    Great arms! I thought yours would be like the design you did on all your shields: Quarterly Argent and Azure, with maybe a cross Gules like on your kiteshield. My attempt at blazoning this (kind of difficult, but I did my best):
    Azure, a pale Sable, overall a bordure Gules. In pale a sword's hilt Azure over a roundel Argent voided. Atop the shield, a closed helm mantled Azure and Gules, and a book displaying the arms for the crest. Supporting the shield are two Angel Moroni statues addorsed Or. The motto, "Live In Truth", to be carried in an escroll below the shield.
    Shame you didn't touch on blazoning in either of your videos. It's the fun part of heraldry! And also the most painful.
    Note that the image you made is actually immaterial according to heraldic law. You see, what you would register with the College of Arms is the blazon rather than the image, so that the Heralds can make their own interpretation which is still legally valid.
    However, by merely copyrighting your arms, you are registering the image rather than the blazon, which means that anyone can come along and can make their own version of your arms and it's no longer protected. It's a good idea to build your arms from your blazon, rather than the other way around, so you know which features are important and which ones aren't.

    Hello, I am an independent Herald and I have marshalled arms for both nobility and peasants of different countries. Congragulations on blazoning your own arms. You did a great job. You said it's hard to know where to find reliable information, and I agree. My advice is to go to your local library for Heraldic research. Even in the Internet age, paper books are still the main means to learn about heraldry. Also I'm very familiar with your symbols. I am a former Mormon (now Atheist). As far as the rules of heraldry, metals usually overlap colors, so if the field being azure, and the bar sable, the sword and ring should normally be metals. Also only a knight or descendent of knights should use a helm, and finally the supporting Moronis should face the scutchleon, but again, rules of Heraldry have become loose over time, so you of course, can do whatever you want, and not particularly offend heraldic tradition.

    This is almost a year late, but I'd like to say a couple things. I scrolled through this comment section hoping for creativity and maybe a few other coat of arms as inspiration for my own, but all I found was insults toward what he said was an extremely personal thing to him and outright hatred towards both his symbol and his religion.
    As much as I've heard and experienced of RUclips comment sections, this is especially stupid and misguided. Poorly spelt "you're a faggot"s over the internet are nothing compared to the insulting of one's core values and being, and while I disagree with a distinct right and wrong in most instances, this is one of the things I find outright wrong. Outright, simply, completely wrong. And it's honestly depressing.
    To get into more detail as opposed to making this a meaningless expression of my own emotions, this is a man who put himself out there to be creative. Simply to be creative and inspiring. That was the purpose of this video. JUST this video by itself. As somebody who's watched a lot of his videos, I could say a lot of other things that he does for his audience and exactly why I care about him so much, but that's not relevant to this video in particular. I don't have an issue with criticism or mockery of really anything. I usually don't mind insults either. All of them serve a purpose, and that's fine. This is saddening because of how much it means to Shad and how people have stomped all over it. I'm not saying you can't find things wrong with it. That's fine. I'm not trying to silence anyone who has an issue with it. But don't be disrespectful to a man's soul. Don't be disrespectful to a man's life, especially when they were just trying to fucking inspire people to create something.
    That's one of the only things somebody like me can call sin.

No motto, no crest nor anything else.
    The Halo, the cross and the colors are rather obvious the meaning. The purple is from the Ipê flower, and those are because I wanted to represent Brazil, my country, that I love so much. And green for the same reason. That's literally all the though I put when I was designing my Arms.

    Shad, it's official. I want you as my friend. Castles, dragons, geekery, and now this..? Awesome.
    Just watched your video on heraldry in general, and had to watch this one too. I have actually made a CoA (apologies for using the incorrect term, but it's so ingrained, the right one just doesn't stick), for myself a while back ago already (and I think I might give that another review). So it's great to see a video of someone that made himself one too, with proper knowledge and attention to detail. I have a few remarks on your video, but let me stress first that I thoroughly respect and admire your work. Even if your CoA is not entirely my cup of tea, I acknowledge that it doesn't have to be, and appreciate your work and thoughts that have gone into it.
    In comment to what you say at 6.15; circles are actually used very commonly in medieval artwork, every saint has a golden disc behind its head, as a sign of divinity. Later in the video you mention halo's, and those too are of course supposed to make clear the divine status of the person wearing it. So, I think that your use of a circle as sign of divinity/god, is pretty solid.
    You mention that you are a firm believer of good and evil. It surprised me then, that when you talk about the meaning of the colours you used, and the visual imagery it creates, that you did not meantion what seemed quite obvious to me: the sword, held in the light of god, is used to fight the darkness/evil.
    As an atheist, I had no idea that the supporters of your shield were actually specific angels, and actually thought they were heralds. So, before hearing your explanation on them, just from just looking at your CoA, and trying to see the logic in you choosing heralds, in combination to the rest of your CoA, I had a theory on the meaning of your CoA, that I think you might enjoy. The thought I had, was that you are not just the sword, but also the herald, for you fight (the sword) by spreading (the herald) truth (the book).
    I think that would add quite nicely to your explanation, and tie in great to your motto.

  • @RevilloPhoenix
    @RevilloPhoenix 7 лет назад +8

    I immediately taught that the circle on the sword was some kind of symbol for god or some other holy force, but my idea is cause in my eyes I recognized it as a Halo. The positioning that the circle is around the top of the sword looked to me like there ts basically a halo on the sword. Not a modern type of halo that people imagine as a ring floating above an angels head but the type that you often see Jesus or other saints and what not painted with, a full circle of light surrounding their head.
    ( I'm not religious tho. )
    Edit: And then I have to say that I wrote this before you said Halo yourself in the video. XD

    As a student and practitioner of Heraldry for over 40 years, let me assure you that "Symbology" of particular charges is an utter folly, there is no codification thereof, as he explains. Another caution I will make is that there IS NO SUCH THING AS A "FAMILY" COAT OF ARMS! That seems to be a uniquely American misunderstanding of heraldry. If you have any questions on the subject, feel free to reply and leave a personal contact e-mail, I will happily answer questions.

      German and Dutch burgher heraldry has a family arms, so that is not entirely correct. But even then only direct descendents of the original arminger are allowed to bear those arms.

    Just one comment on heraldry, in particular the colours. In heraldry, you have metals and colours, metals are white and yellow (representing silver and gold), colours are everything else (though traditionally there is a limited set of colours one could use).
    On your shield or flag, you typically aren't allowed to have a colour border another colour or a metal border another metal. So technically, your shield with black and blue next to one another is not allowed and you'd have to use a metal separator.

    • @shadiversity
      @shadiversity  8 лет назад +13

      You're correct. I've heard that rule before and there's a lot of other ones too. But since I never see myself officially registering my arms I decided to make it how I wanted it to look.

    • @thalamay
      @thalamay 8 лет назад +7

      Yeah, it wasn't so much meant as criticism and more like an FYI. At the end of the day, we don't live in the Middle Ages any more and the most important thing is that you are happy see yourself/your family reflected. Which is why I included the word "technically".

    • @Ralchire
      @Ralchire 8 лет назад +5

      A correction: the Rule of Tincture states that color should not be placed upon color, nor metal on metal. The key word here is "upon", AKA, surrounded by or appearing to be on top of.
      Colors can lie beside colors, and metals beside metals without a problem. The problem lies when colors are surrounded or appear to be on top of colors, ditto for metals.
      For instance, in the arms of Jerusalem: [Argent, a cross potent between four crosslets Or]. This is a famous violation of the rule of tincture (golden crosses on a white field) and is technically wrong, but I guess the heralds of the day thought Jerusalem to be above the law.
      upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4c/Jerusalem_cross.svg/220px-Jerusalem_cross.svg.png
      However, in the arms of Edward III, the arms of England are quartered with the arms of France: [Quarterly 1st and 4th Gules, three lions couchant Or armed and langued Azure, 2nd and 3rd Azure, semy of fleurs-de-lis Or.] This results in a field of blue and red lying beside one another, which is not against the rules because the colors do not appear to "lie" on top of one another.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Royal_Arms_of_England_(1340-1367).svg
      The Rule of Tincture, though it's really technically a British rule, is also good design. The whole thing has to do with visibility at a distance, and that's really important if you see a knight riding towards you and you need to identify him quickly.
      But you are right, though. Shad's arms DO violate the rule of tincture, since his field would be [Azure, a pale Sable], in which the pale behaves as a charge rather than as a division, since both sides of the pale are Azure.

    • @thalamay
      @thalamay 8 лет назад +1

      @Ralchire
      That's interesting, though I'm pretty sure that the rules I know do forbid bordering colours. But my sources aren't English, so that might be a difference. But there are of course exceptions. Like ornamentation is allowed, e.g. a red beak on a black eagle as in the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire.
      Also overlays are allowed, like a red ribbon over a green motive. And there are exceptions when two houses merge via marriage and they combine their designs, then the rules only apply to the individual halves of the shield and not the shield as a whole.
      Of course there have also always been outright violations. Your Jerusalem example is interesting. I know for a fact that the flag of the Vatican (yellow/white) has been deliberately designed to violate the rule in order to stress its exceptional position. Whereas the modern day flags of Germany or Portugal in all likelihood just violate the rule without deliberation.

    this is an amazing video. it taught us allot about you as a person which i feel should bring the community together and closer to you. however i have to say its disappointing to see so many close minded pricks in the comment section who refuse to accept your religiousness and instead choose to view it as a negative thing and think less of you for it. personally i find it disgraceful. religion doesn't define who we are as a person, instead it amplifies our personality and gives us something to believe in and use to support ourselves and a goal to aim for. it doesn't make you a lesser person and it definitely doesn't make you a less reliable and valid historian you-tuber, the idiot who said that should be ashamed. nobody should ever judge someone based on their religion but instead base it on their personality.
    but it was also nice to see the comments being filled with support for you and congratulations from others of religious and none-religious backgrounds. some people tried to give tips which is nice and others decided to follow in your foot steps which is also wonderful. overall I'm very glad i came across this video today it was a great watch.
    oh and before i get the whole just supporting him because you're religious. i am an atheist, always have been doubt i ever wont be. i don't believe in higher powers or in fate. i believe in what i have personal experience with. but i also know that religious people are no different from the rest of us, they have just had a different set of life experiences.

    In reference to your summary of the history of western heraldry, it is significant to note the undisputed fact that, in the mediaeval period during which proto- and heraldry began, all of Europe was Catholic Christian or, in other words, all European Christians were Catholic (note I stated "European" Christians). Therefore western heraldry, from which tradition your own achievement derives by your own thorough explanations, is purely a product of the Catholic mind and a Catholic society, however flawed or exalted during that period. Your ontological understanding is impressive and refreshing, as is your heraldic application of it. It indicates the symbolic genius of those mediaeval Catholics, a genius that you still find alive in Catholic art and Mass today, even if much more rarely. Such symbolism is remarkably rich especially in the Extraordinary (all Latin) Form of the Holy Mass, which is still celebrated by Catholics around the world. It is the richest form of lived and practiced heraldry/symbolism that I know. You would be fascinated to study, at the least, the symbolic genius the Catholic Mass employs. Heraldry is everywhere, from the ornamentation of chalices and priestly vestments and stained glass to every little gesture and word. Also, your ontological understanding of truth and being would be much nourished by the unparalleled theories of being and truth of Saint Thomas Aquinas, OP. Check out his Summa Theologiae and De Veritate; you will love them, even as a Mormon! And he was writing during the mediaeval period of heraldry's development. He explains, I think, the core of the thought behind western heraldry, which, we must admit in fact, is in its origin a Catholic art (note that I state "western" heraldry specifically; obviously the ancients had a form of it also that would have influenced the mediaevals). Cheers!

      Honestly I empathize with you. I'm happy staying in the church, and will serve my mission with pride, but when I get back, I'm not claiming that I'll stay 100% active. If the theology of the religion goes in a direction that doesn't make sense or gets too superstitious for me, I'll simply move on. For my own beliefs, it hasn't gone that way quite yet and likely wont, but I'm a little shit who has way too many influences that fucked up how I see the world. And rationalism is really damn important to me. Especially being skeptical of anyone who claims to have literally seen God.
      While I believe in Joseph's case it was true, I would probably laugh a stake president out of the room of they claimed they knew something because God literally told them of it. Revelation from God is something to be dissected and studied, and there have been very few cases in my opinion where He literally spoke to us as people.
      Just my two cents. Proud DC area Mormon, woot woot.

    My family coat of arms is known as half-goat coat of arms in Poland, ours is with a mule head at its front. It's a fairly old coat of arms, and I know that under it the royal standard bearer at Battle of Grunwald used this coat of arms and is ergo one of my ancestors. He's actually depicted in the painting by Matejko under the same name, which is an extremely famous painting. My family branched off from Ligęza, which was the original family with that coat of arms. So yeah, I actually have a legitimate coat of arms to use :D

    Just as an aside, the statement that all mathematical equations, or all numbers can be found inside the decimal representation of pi is not necessarily correct. Just because it's nonrepeating and infinite like all irrational numbers, doesn't mean it has to contain all possible combinations of digits.
    As a simple example, consider the number 0.123121231212123121212123... it is definitely nonrepeating and infinite, and yet it will not ever contain the sequence "321", not to mention like, the digit 4.
    So anyway, I'm not disputing the symbolism of a circle as representation of infinity, but the pi thing is just mathematically unsound.

The borders of the shield would be circular and the borders themselves would be the great snake Oroboros. In the shield itself would be a traditional single stripe diagonally. There would be a sword cutting through that stripe. All of this combined represents our eternal struggle to sever ourselves from both sides of good and evil and in the middle severing it all would be the truth (sword) banishing both corruption (evil) and blind fanaticism (good)
