Or just do what we do with our capital...no flag nor shield what so ever. Because the national flag and emblem are good enough to represent the entire nation and its spirit
looking this up, each of the quarterings are actually the coats of arms of older suburbs that got merged together only later on. Margareten, for example, has its own coat of arms put over those of Nikolsdorf, Matzleinsdorf, Hundsturm, Reinprechtsdorf, and Laurenzergrund. now that's not to say that their ideas for designing these are lazy as heck. Matzleinsdorf's parish church patron was St. Florian the Helper of Firefighters, so they had to insert the whole guy to there instead of just picking the water bucket and flag or something. still saying that though, i'm actually in favor of preserving these arms, perhaps only tweaking them to be consistent in detail and so on. they have a charm that, say, London's borough coat of arms definitely lacks. has anyone seen all of those borough shields, they're boring to look at-it feels like they're all auto-generated by a lazy programmer wanting a quick buck.
3:29 I think the main reason why so many district coats of arms contain christian imagery (and also why they are split) is because they are just a combination of tge coats of arms of towns that were put into the same district. Some of these towns had very old coat of arms.
That doesn't make any sense - a coat of arms within a coat of arms? What's next, a coat of arms within a flag within a coat of arms within a coat of arms?! Oh, that was next...
At 9:35, Danubetown/Donaustadt, the middle part of it, also known as the most important part of any coat of arms, is the same as Moscow's coat of arms. (the dragon getting beaten up by an armored dude.) It's also in the middle of the Russian coat of arms, even though it's a very complicated symbol.
8:09 The sheep on the middle in the top row from Alsground could be the sign of the Moravians from Böhmen. Maybe it is also more common as a depiction of Jesus the lamb leading the way, but Ive saw it first in the Moravian context. Would be interesting to know if there is a connection. Great video again by the way.
Me watching the beginning of the video: not bad. He may exaggerate a bit... Also me after 6 or 7 coats of arms shown: ehh, nevermind, this escalated quickly.
Additional info for nerds: The 3 parts in the Simmering CoA represent the 3 parts of the district: S for Simmering, the unicorn for Kaiserebersdorf and the crossed fishes for Albern.
i figured that's what happened with a lot of these-smaller local authorities getting squished together. each one of those subdivisions are just common fare for random German villages.
The upper right in Margareten (Number 16) is probably St. Florian, patron Saint of firefighters. In radio communication (at least here in Germany) the fire trucks are all called Florian and a number. In the local fire department there is also a painting of him on a wall that looks pretty much like in that Coat of Arms, just much more detailed.
I hope this doesn't come across as rude and you can obviously do whatever you want on your channel but for me personally, I find the general vibe of this video a lot more pleasing and enjoyable than the "I have to make a joke every 2 seconds" of your usual videos.
Huh, interesting. Not rude at all, thanks for the input! I'm still gonna stick with the more intricate style since that's just what I like the most, but good to know there are people enjoying the laid back style as well.
that white cross of vienna there REALLY stands out amongst all the other ones it's like, the capital city has to be so special and everyone outside of it puts up with substandard crowded flags and shields. favouritism much
These arms just scream 20th century. The lack of purple for the grapes is probably an attempt to respect historic heraldic colour (tincture), which avoided purple (although it does have a heraldic name, "Purpure"), however many of these arms don't bother to respect the old "rule of tincture" - no metal on metal, nor colour on colour - so we're seeing illegal green (Vert) upon blue (Azure), when a coloured field can ONLY be given an Argent (silver or white) or Or (gold or yellow) charge, and vice versa. The animals and humans are also all drawn in a rather modern style, which adds that veneer of inauthenticity (though they can still look nice). The Inner City's arms's blazon is also just as elegant as its appearance, which is also why I love it: "Gules, a cross Argent".
The rules of tincture is just a guideline. Though they are generally followed, the wish of the commissioner usually trumps the designer. Add to that, most of the arms in this video are combination of other arms which may have historical significance to the district. Saints usually indicate the presence of a church of that Saint or a place of significance to that Saint, moon is a symbol of the Virgin Mary (not Islam as mentioned in the video) and then all the main historical produce of that district (grapes, hammer which is for industry, etc etc). So in designing those coat of arms, most of the time, its the city's alderman that would request what elements to include.
Surely these are things that you should have had been reasonably expected to have been able to be able to scrawl on a shield in the last 20 minutes before a battle. Depending on who's side you you'd have had to have had decided to fight for on that day!?

You shouldn't judge whether there are strokes on the grass, because that is not integral to the shield design, that is merely an artistic choice of the person drawing the shield. Coats of arms are only described very simply, with what is depicted on them, not how exactly it should be drawn. A different person might picture the same shield differently, but it would still be right.
I have to say I'm a little disappointed that you didn't say that the court of arms aren't the yellow from the egg in the beginning, like the typical Austrian would translate it
