There's a fair bit of tension in there too. Eddie has an aw shucks thing on top but there's a real snob underneath, and he judges Stone's unvarnished opinions - "we like high-energy, I liked bad radio hits, dreamweaver was my #1 song" and the like. Stone is the opposite. Cynical and smart on the surface but very honest and open underneath, even a little naive, and not nearly as self-conscious as Eddie. Stone chafes at being judged by Eddie because he thinks Eddie is a bit of a tool, less cool in a Seattle rock music scene context but he also knows Eddie's someone he has to learn to respect. You can already see Eddie feeling Stone is not qualified to lead him, and it flipped not so much later. This interview captures the heart and soul of PJ, which is Eddie and Stone, before they learned how to handle themselves around other.
I don’t believe there’s friendship! I believe there’s a common denominator which is the bands success! I think they learned to live around each other to this day! I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!
When people talk greatest guitarists of all time it’s almost always from a technical standpoint. Imo the ability to write riffs is what’s going to make you successful and loved. Stone Gossard is a perfect example of this. All three of his bands were extremely successful and him and Jeff were the anchor of said bands
I'm 29 years old and I just discovered pearl jams story (i've always known their hits) but i've watched this 3 times and now I've heard almost all their songs.
Is there anything better than a stoned, mumbling, Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard talking about the present time of Pop and Kurt, Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Peppers, and the time of where they were in music? As the Hairhead bands crumbled around them, this time capsule interview of pop music in 1991 is thankfully preserved. They didn't want to be Pop, but they blew your hair back. They were prophetic, without trying to be, as they stumbled, laughed, and rocked your mind into the 90's and beyond. They WERE SubPop. Thanks for posting.

I come back to this interview over and over. I love the first 25 seconds where I keep trying to read Stone and Eddie's facial expressions. Stone looking underwhelmed and incredulous at this interviewer when he asks them to state their names and what they play or do........and Eddie's face when the interviewer asks them to talk about Pearl Jam... "what are you guys about".... Eddie's expression is priceless here...he purses his mouth and looks up into his eyelids......for some answer.
This is great; Eddie before he unwillingly became the voice of a generation, and Stone trying to be as professional as ever. It's fun to see Eddie having fun with notoriety!
Fascinating to watch sexy Stone fidgeting with his long, nimble guitar fingers and watch his big, intelligent eyes. Eddie's face endlessly amusing and beautiful too.

I am also captivated by Stone... Dark, weird, brooding, articulate, smart, thoughtful, introspective, curious, strange, handsome Stone. 😊 Yes, some of us are corny
Fun interview. I saw that show, I think at the Palladium in LA. Went to see the Chili Peppers, and I knew Nirvana was opening, which was killer as it was, but this unknown band opens the whole show, and they blew me away. Eddie ROCKED that crowd, owned it, and obviously, Stone, Jeff, and Mike held it all together. I was just talking about this show last night with some friends when I was asked what the best show I ever saw was. Hands down, this one. Pearl Jam opening for Nirvana who was opening for The Chili Peppers. Wow.
Your so lucky to see such an iconic show. What I would give to see Nirvana, Peppers, and Pearl Jam concert line up. While you were there did you know you were seeing something special? Can you tell me any memories about the concert?
Putting those CDs together one after the other hahahaha this is one of my favourite interviews I love all the Seattle bands interviews around this time the answers to questions are priceless!
watching this from this perspective, now, they both seem so funny, each in his own way...Stone trying to hide behind the "whatever, man" intellectual style, and Eddie hiding behind "am completely wasted, man" kind of thing...love them both!
Man i miss the 90's!! Music was great, people actually talked to one another, MTV played music and beavis and butthead ruled. So glad i was a teenager during this time.
It’s important to remember that at this particular point in the band’s career, Stone was the de facto leader of the band. It wasn’t until Vitalogy was made that the shift in leadership began to tilt toward Ed.
Vs and Vitalogy were easily the best PJ albums (I do have a dirty love of Yield I can't get past tho) & that's down to Stone and Jeff. Like Green River. Like Mother Love Bone. I really liked Ed "up front" until he inherited Bono's Messiah complex. His deification most definitely took PJ away from the Stone/Jeff axis of talent to the overly superficial AOR dad rock of today.
I love everyone, but I can't not look at stone here, he's like the center of knowledge and wisdom and he doesn't get enough credit here, nuff said. Haha Eddie though can he even see straight right now?
I would have given a million bucks to hear this in the mid-1990s when I was writing my dissertation. It was partly inspired by exactly the sorts of questions these two were answering. I love the goofy energy of Ed.... unaffected... and the genius juice was certainly flowing with that energy. Thanks!
Hey when your a free spirit and toast, it's whatever's happening at the moment. If your enjoying your success, and hyped, the stories get funnier, like Eddie diving into crowds. That's plain roll on the floor laughing, having fun. No one's taking the moment seriously.
Stone's indifferent reaction to the "cheerleaders in Nirvana's new video" (18.20) slipped through almost unnoticed. The clip that he "caught the tail end of" is, of course, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", which was released two months earlier (Sept '91) and was by then yet to turn into the totally unexpected worldwide phenomenon that would eventually also foster the exponential success of Pearl Jam, who are relative unknowns at the time of this interview.

you just got to be crazy or drug addict to feed this that man is not a good looking man these men are not good-looking men they look like glorified bums marijuana loser drunky losers basically who cares about all this garbage they were a horrible band anybody would draw all those people do drugs and drink I think they're cool big deal they're influencing people in the wrong way go find god grow up and stop being such a a lazy weirdo pervert grow a backbone you need drugs to cope with life do you need a backbone God bless you and yours
Stone? I could see you being attracted to Eddy But stone looks insane like a weird high school art teaccher that's secretly into men
I am also captivated by Stone... Dark, weird, brooding, articulate, smart, thoughtful, introspective, curious, strange, handsome Stone. 😊 Yes, some of us are corny
@@tanyatrejo6627 I agree.. Eddie was gorgeous when young, but Stone was very good-looking too 😊
Fun interview.
God, how I wish I'd been there!
“He”s got a nice chest too, Jesus” 😂😂😂
the eddie's jocker face era
LOL
lol
Martin Losada Say what?!
Wow yahll got jokes joker face???? LMFAO!!!
stop lol
omfg. Golden interview, right here!
Eddies smile is amazeballs
6:55 Ed's face "it'll be amazing" made me choke on my phad Thai lol love that guy he looks eternally stoked
Great video. The last 15 seconds is powerful.
Putting those CDs together one after the other hahahaha this is one of my favourite interviews I love all the Seattle bands interviews around this time the answers to questions are priceless!
Eddie doesn't even know what planet he's on in this video.
And that’s the best part of that entire interview 😅
😂
lol Eddie's shirt at 3:35
14:30
"Our third record is going to be so amazing"
And lo, Vitalogy was destined to be.
watching this from this perspective, now, they both seem so funny, each in his own way...Stone trying to hide behind the "whatever, man" intellectual style, and Eddie hiding behind "am completely wasted, man" kind of thing...love them both!
What?
Wow, Stone is impressively passive aggressive here.
Like every stone on the earth
Glad you see it too so do 96 others now!
Lenny Smyth nope. He’s just a dick
In true Seattle fashion
@@mrsmacca126 stop your twattery.
Man i miss the 90's!! Music was great, people actually talked to one another, MTV played music and beavis and butthead ruled. So glad i was a teenager during this time.
Real (I wasn’t even born)
here we see the beginning of live crowds singing their hearts out all around the world to this day
It’s important to remember that at this particular point in the band’s career, Stone was the de facto leader of the band. It wasn’t until Vitalogy was made that the shift in leadership began to tilt toward Ed.
I guess that's when he "grew up." At this point he's still a kid.
That was the last album I bought, they nosedived after Stone stopped writing the songs.
They need to go back to Stone and Jeff writing the majority of the music. Fuck are they boring otherwise.
Thank you for posting this! I was not aware of this interview! It was a nostalgia overload. =)
Stone just hates the interviewer
That slow "don't give a fuck" blink of his eyes. Yep, he's slowly dying to get up and be done with it.
lol eddies mouth
no shit, just constantly smiling. "When the Doors of Perception are cleansed things will appear to man as they truly are, Infinite"...😁
Little thing called LSD. Love for my son and daughter.
the classic eddie vedder constant smile
Ryan Because I am thinking of my Eddie-fiction between me and my Chrissy-boy.
:>
This, a year after they met. Stone, "I think were gonna make some great records. No doubt in my mind."
I'll take both just transport me back to the 90s and make me older. I love Stone's attitude face.
Gossard is so very well spoken
Just watch Eddie’s facial expressions the whole time
Goddard is articulate and gave great backstory information.. great guitarist
I love everyone, but I can't not look at stone here, he's like the center of knowledge and wisdom and he doesn't get enough credit here, nuff said. Haha Eddie though can he even see straight right now?
I'm pretty sure Eddies seeing everything in waves at that point in time...
Eddie is the most woke stoned person ever
I would have given a million bucks to hear this in the mid-1990s when I was writing my dissertation. It was partly inspired by exactly the sorts of questions these two were answering. I love the goofy energy of Ed.... unaffected... and the genius juice was certainly flowing with that energy.
Thanks!
They were both secretly in love with Chris Cornell
@@LTC_70 really!? 😭 I don't believe...
Lea OMG CAN I HAVE DETAILS??!
Noooooo way
@@LTC_70 where did you hear that?
Hey when your a free spirit and toast, it's whatever's happening at
the moment. If your enjoying your success, and hyped, the stories
get funnier, like Eddie diving into crowds. That's plain roll on the
floor laughing, having fun. No one's taking the moment seriously.
"I'm Eddie Vedder and I sing" ....SHIT, the whole world knows that by now, one of the great vocalist of his genre, if not THE greatest!
ed smiled more in this interview than he did in the years 1993-2004 combined or whatever year W bush left office
This Interview took place 30 years ago today, a 26 year old Eddie and a 25 year old Stone, Damn time flies. ✌
"i left the towels kinda messy. does that count?"
brilliant.
Brilliant? You need to explore more
LOVE that line...!!
Stone looks like he could be Tony Hawks younger brother who didnt like skateboarding & just wanted to play music
Yea stonnie hawk
oh how I love Eddies stoned grinning all the time...
Gossard Vedder And Eddie Stoned
Love this interview! Fun and profound. And from the distance in time - prophetic :)
