Can Ash Ketchum Beat Pokémon Yellow and Become the Kanto Champion?

- Could Ash Ketchum have become champion all the way back in Kanto?
For decades, Ash has aimed to be a Pokemon Master. And recently, he finally achieved his dream of becoming the best pokemon trainer in the world.
But I believe that Ash could have been the champion all the way back in kanto, if he knew what he was doing. So I decided to play through Pokemon Yellow as Ash, using only his pokemon. Its not quite a hardcore nuzlocke, because that would have been a bit too difficult I think. Even so, the run is plenty hard. Lets see if Ash has what it takes.

Still early in watching the video, but regarding the Brock fight: When I was a small child playing Yellow for the first time, I remember beating Brock and waiting at the edge of town for him to come join my party like he does in the anime. I remember I kept walking toward Mt. Moon and then going back toward the City because I was confused about when he'd show up to come with me ahaha.
Oh man, I’m imaging a little kid heartbroken because Brock won’t follow them. That’s so sad!
I remember being bummed he didn't come along either.
Hahaha i thought the same thing when I played FireRed 😭🤣
I thought if you beat the game you will be able to have your old Pokémon but at level 100 and Brock will follow you
I talked to Brock so many times after beating him and couldn't figure out why he didn't come with me. Especially because we had a playground rumor at our school that if you stayed up late and talked to him he would follow you cause this one kid totally did it.
Its almost as if pikachu was meant to be a weak early-game pokemon and wasnt meant to be a pokemon capable of defeating everybody with enough plot armor
Seems like it, huh?
5:13 Hey, don't blame this one on Ash, Pikachu refused to fight Misty (though he seems perfectly fine doing so later in the anime, though not for quite a while).
That’s true, darn pikachu!
I say that is still Ash's fault, as he have not erned so much obidiense whit Pikachu yet, as him refusing to fight is a disobidient move.
@@bronsjefjer He wasn't refusing to right in general, he was refusing to fight Misty. A friend. It's not a matter of obedience, it's friendship.
It is still disobidience, and it is still Ash's fault.@@Great_Olaf5
@@bronsjefjer Let's put it this way, if I ordered my dog to attack my best friend's dog, I don't care how well trained it was, I would fully hope and expect it to refuse.
Ash didnt use Pikachu against Misty because Pikachu refused to battle. :p Ash actually knew that pikachu would have been a good mon to use so he tried sending it out first.
Yeah I know. It just would have been so much easier.
The reason even stage 1 pokemon can get so strong in Gen 1 is the extremely busted EV system. Since there is no cap in Gen 1 you will most likely max out all EVs during the level grinding, making your Pokemon really strong. Theres a reason they added a cap later.
tf
Yeah and by later you mean gen3 where you can only get up to 255 EVs in a single stat and you can only max out two stats at once
Ok i was always wondering why they were strong and i didn't evolve em
the limit for each stat is 65535 and can be maxed out on all stats
@@frokydafroakiealso, the stats increase according to the square root of the "EV" (called stat xp in this gen). So it's equivalent to having 255 EV in modern games.
Also stat xp is calculated by adding the base stats of the poke, so most defeats gives 50-100 stat xp in each stat
This was amazing! The send off "After wandering across several region for 25 years this kid deserves a rest" hit me right in the feels. Thank you for you dedication on this project.
I appreciate that! Each video in this series has taken quite a long time. Not the gameplay, so much as the prep and then editing to get title cards, constantly changing the team, etc.
Much respect to you regarding the victory against Brock. Never would’ve imagined it was possible to beat him with a lv 12 Pikachu and Pidgeotto lol
Thanks! In Gen 3 though, it would be almost impossible though. The fact that nobody had any rock moves, and geodude only had tackle made it possible.
I always grind Charmander to Flamethrower level before Erika's gym. Always.
I would, but per my rules I couldn’t level up past Erika’s gloom.
That's fair... it was hard being a Charmander supporter in Gen 1.

I would love to see this for each region now
There's a channel that's already basically done that challenge. Enter the Unown has done every region up through Alola using Ash's team for every major battle. And he went as far as trying to match levels and movesets.
@@Great_Olaf5 oh nice
I didn’t realize that actually. I’ll have to look it up
@@Great_Olaf5 came to say the same. Great series.
This was an interesting twist too, so props to @Nuzlocke Joe
I remember when I got yellow and found Pidgeotto in the forest. I didn't realize it was THAT rare😂
Not nearly as rare as shinies in future generations, but 1% is still pretty small.
Same thing happened to me and I just honestly thought it was meant to happen cause it's what happens in the show so as a little kid I thought you could only get Pidgeotto there in only Yellow Version 😅
I have seen similar challenges but your commitment to using the same team Ash did for key battles really made this interesting to follow.
Thanks! The idea was to emulate the anime so using ash’s team is a pretty crucial part. I am taking some liberty with his move sets, but I think that’s ok
Congrats Joe! In just 2 weeks, this has become your most popular video(it's tied with the SoulSilver psychic run). I'm excited to see your next video, I wish you success!
Yeah it’s been a great few weeks lol. Those two videos are in a running battle to see which gets to 100k first.
This was better than expected and I enjoyed the nostalgic journey through gen 1
Bravo 😁
Thanks! The goal was to keep 90s kids entertained with OG Pokémon throwbacks. Non 90s kids can watch it too I guess
Not trying to be an Ash hater but playing like Ash in the game really comes across like the player has absolutely no idea what he is actually doing! (Of course you did! It's a great video.)
I've been waiting on this. I try to play like that but you just created a walkthrough for me cos I don't have the time to study how Ash would have done it. Thanks for "keeping it real"

When Ash basically cheated to get every single badge. I think the only badge he earned legitimately was the Thunder Badge.

Thanks! If I got to 20k by the end of the year, that would be awesome!
Epic. You should do this for the Pokemon Ash had in every league. Just go through every generation of games pretending your still playing as Ash. He just had a wardrobe change, lol.
Enter the Unown already did that actually.

One of my favorite part, or episode, was Ghost of Maiden's Peak in first Pokemon season. End of that episode always gives me chills. Yeah.. it wasn't really "Ash moment" you asked, but I'm sucker for bit creepy love story. And man, I still cry when I watch Ash releasing his butterfree, just watched whole season couple years ago, once again. And yes, Ghost of Maiden's Peak gave me chills as much ash Bye Bye Butterfree episide gave me tears.
Bye Bye Butterfree is the one for me.
16:00 double kick is fighting type & Pidgeotto is resistant to it because of its flying typing. Bulbasaur is part poison so it resists poison
Exactly what I wanted to say. In Gen1 there is a bug with double types when one is weak and the other is resistant against the attack. It will show only one type reaction
Correct, but he’s also normal so fighting does neutral damage. The gen 1 bug is the message isn’t correct there
I saw there are already comments about pikachu vs misty anf badge boosts, so here is my extra: the reason for the super effective text is that there is kind of a priority list for the text making it so that dual typed pokemon sometimes get the message wrong because it correctly displayed 'fighting not effective against flying' but applies the correct 1x damage because it is not effective againgt flying, but it is against normal
Hey man, you’ve got a really unique voice in doing these nuzlockes! I hope you keep doing them
Thanks! I plan on keeping it up, with another one coming out in an hour!
Loved this episode !
Thanks! Be sure to check out the Johto challenge if you haven’t already.

I put it on the list, but with a additional rule.
I forgot how much I loved Pokémon Yellow!
17:42 RUDE 🤣🤣 Squirtle is totally cute. But I like Wartortle more.
I’m mostly joking. But since charmander is always my go to, I was never the biggest squirtle fan

Well done. My only criticism is that you're wrong about people not liking Squirtle.

Tbh, I really like squirtle. He’s a solid Pokémon. But since I always choose charmander, and my brother squirtle, it just wasn’t fair. So I guess I still harbor some resentment lol.
I like the idea of catching the Pokemon Misty and Brock normally have. I might try that sometime...
Brock isn’t great. But misty has Starmie who is pretty awesome

I remember one of my runs as a kid finding a Pidgeotto right at the end of Viridian and it killed me before I could catch it. Spent lots of time in the last 6 rows of grass thinking thats where it spawned but I never saw it again. Became a legend to me as a child.
Yeah I can see that. These were the days before gamefaqs
The first GEN Pokémon yellow music was way better than the remake version Pokémon fire red. thank you for at least doing everything Ash did in the actual Pokémon series.🙏🏻✨
You know what you should do next? Do another ash Ketchum play through but instead of using the exact team ash used, use the same pokemon but allow them all to evolve to see if Ash would win if he did evolve all his pokemon, or use all of his pokemon to their max abilities.
Considering how this one went, that would totally be doable. Just the fully evolved starters would probably be enough tbh.
At that point it’s less being Ash’s team and more it being Red’s team that you fight in HGSS.
@@chadachi3970 Red team is Ash if he can into pokemon
Brother Ed, I loved that reference!

late to this but this is a super interesting way to play the games, might get pokémon yellow myself to try this
“Level 50 Charmander”
Charmander is my favorite so I never evolve it.
I get that. I like charmander over charizard if I’m being honest, but I can’t really give up the additional power that comes with evolving.
Did you know they brought aj into yellow. To the right of vermillion city on the way to the snorlax. You get to fight his sandshrew
What? I didn’t know that, but 100% would have beaten up his swimming sandshrew if I did. That’s awesome!
Yeah, Joe and Gisele from the following episode are in the game, too.
Very sad that u didn't use Charizard against Lance's Dragonite, only for the content :( but nice play with Brock, although you've been lucky with bind 😂ggwp man, it took me days when i was i child
Oh yeah, I’ll freely admit that was a luck Brock fight. It also helps the onix is weak, so tackle doesn’t do all that much.
You mean to tell me, that I spent 26 years watching for ash to become champion when I could’ve just watched you do it in 30 minutes?! Jk, great video. Although that Full Metal Alchemist reference you made in the beginning with Bill was…alarming. And the anime episode references you put to the side to keep track of the timeline is peak. Anyways, love the videos as always

Technically, being a criminal organization, the only way for Giovanni to get rid of Jesse, James & Meowth would be to kill them. Unfortunately, everyone is immortal in the Pokémon universe.
That’s a fair point. The amount of times team rocket gets blasted into the sky, only to reappear next episode with no injuries proves they are immortal.
When I was younger all I had was yellow so i restarted one day and tried the frist 3 gyms as Ash and it was hella hard!! This was super cool video
Yeah it requires a fair amount of luck for sure. Imo, Erika was the hardest so you stopped at just the right time it seems
That dead weight... dang bro, right after that heartfelt sadness cold.

I love how you mentioned chrono trigger . What an underrated game
By far my favorite game! I’ve played it on snes, ps, and the ds too. Still need to get it on steam though
the haunter sprite looks epic
In Gen 1 the damage calculations for move effectiveness are correct, but the message only accounts for the secondary type of the defending Pokémon. Since Bulbasaur is Grass/Poison, Poison moves show as “Not Very Effective” because they’re not very effective against poison, even though they do the correct damage. Same with Pidgeotto’s Normal/Flying type
Yeah that was a surprise playing through this game
What a cool Video!
Thanks!
Awesome video
Did you consider doing this in Let's Go Pikachu?
Would've been funny if also went back to catch Snorlax and Lapras after releasing Pidgeot to do the Orange Island arc in-game
Any chance will do Ash playthrough's in the other regions
Would be cool to see an Emerald version that has Ash do Hoenn League plus Battle Frontier
I actually did think about getting snorlax and Lapras, but this video already took way longer to make then I thought, so pidgeot is the only one who got special treatment.
Depending on how well this one does, I might try something similar in Crystal
@@NuzlockeJoe Looking forward to it and other videos that might have planned outside of this
ash really did have a really weird habit of just randomly throwing his pokemon away when they actually got strong, like he has some compulsive need to never actually have decent pokemon. Maybe that's why he didn't let most of his pokemon evolve? If they stay weak then his neurosis won't kick in and force him to throw away his now more powerful pokemon? Congrats on the run, it was amusing, and it was neat to see that elite 4 sweep
Thanks! And yeah, some of ash’s decisions about which Pokémon to keep didn’t make a ton of sense
I like this idea and it was Pikachu's decision to not fight Misty.
Heh, I guess your equivalent of getting pikachu to like you by shoving potions is of that episode when Ash had to go get Pikachu potion when he got poisoned.
Your fight with Lt. soda (Surge) was tougher because you didn't take Pikachu to some mill to super charge his electric shock.
Trust me, I looked everywhere forBrock’s dad to help with pikachu, but I guess he just doesn’t exist anymore!
@@NuzlockeJoe Dang, he's even worse of a dead beat dad in this version.
Also, when you mentioned the donuts, I thought of that episode with the guy who turned himself into a pokemon (was stuck in a costume in the anime) the part when Brock mentioned making bacon cheese burgers but never did make them. I was so mad.
Your play through really shown how bad of a trainer Ash was. I got sick of him rushing to the next gym without training or catching any other pokemon.
You could have abused the badge boost glitch to make up for your Pokémon not evolving.
Basically all badge boosts are reapplied whenever your stats are raised or lowered.
For example the Boulder Badge increases your attack by 12.5%. Let’s say you get hit with a sand attack, your attack would increase again. You actually used the badge boost glitch unknowingly. Every time you used double team against Surge, Pikachu’s attack increased due to you having the boulder badge. Now if you actually know about said glitch then you probably did this on purpose.
Once you get the volcano badge getting one of your stats lowered will increase all your stats. It’s pretty friggin hilarious and so fun to abuse.
Honestly, I never knew about that glitch. That’s so crazy, and ridiculously easy to exploit. Maybe next time I do a gen 1 run, I’ll use this to my advantage
@@NuzlockeJoe
Boulder Badge increases attack
Thunder Badge increases defense (game days speed but there was a programming error)
Soul Badge increases speed
Volcano Badge increases special.
I didn’t know about this until 2021 myself and I’ve been playing Pokémon since 1999.
@@weedandwater I knew that in game it says they increased stats, but I never actually paid too much attention to that. I especially didn’t know they were exploited with stat changes

So they are somewhat divided, like south Provence area 1,2…
As far as the first encounter, you can either go by the first Pokémon you see walking around, that’s what I do, or close your eyes and walk until he hear the battle music.

To make the run as Ashlike as possible, you must try to use Thunder Shock on an Onix.
Fair point. I guess I didn’t do a good job as ash, I’m just too smart!
Also for sabrina fight, i had my haunter confuse her mons and they defeat themselves , since ash doesn't attack them i thought it would be cool if they got destroy themselves abd for erika i hope for burn by charmander and had poikachu use evasion move so just like gym burnt away her did as well
Could you detail when you choose to Lvl Cap? I see it but I thought you never used a rare candy.
I hope this doesn't ruin the run for you, but I do use rare candies. Generally I use rare candies to level up right before the gym to match the level cap.
I like Squirtle. he's a "Cool Dude" and "Shaped like a Freind".
But legit, I think he's neat
About the Double Kick/Acid being "super effective" to Pidgeotto/Bulbasaur. They were not really super effective, but since the text is triggered by comparing the type of the move with the types of the hit pokemon in order and displayes effectiveness as soon as it can it gets wierd.
If a pokemon is hit by an attack that is super effective against it's first type but not very effective against its second type, say the grass-poison type Bulbasaur being hit by the move Acid, the game will display the super effective message before comparing the move type with the pokemons secondary typing. (The same is true for the "not very effective"-message.) The actual damage is still correctly calculated though. :)
Yep! I didn’t realize this was a gen 1 glitch until playing through this game again. It was just surprising to see those types of messages when I knew it was wrong lol
I'm pretty sure Sure that that Feature was Fixed so that if a Move is Super Effective on the First Type, but Not Very Effective on the second (or vice versa) it goes neutral
The reason some neutral moves will say either "not very effective" or "its super effective" is because it looks at one of the typings when putting the message but it still looks at both types to do the damage calcs so the damage is right
Correct. Its a glitch in the text only, but is still a bit confusing
