RE: the mouse function, it IS shaped like a real mouse, or at least you hold it like you would hold an ergonomic upright mouse. I can understand wanting it to lie flat if those are the mice you're used to, but if you're struggling with hand strain, an upright mouse is a dream, and I'm glad that Lenovo chose to make this mouse ergonomic in that way.

I don't think it's crazy. They each have their pros and cons and it will come down to different priorities.
My priorities, coolest (Steam Deck OLED vs Ally), handheld ergonomics (Ayn Odin 2 > Steam Deck OLED > LCD ), repairability (Steam Deck), software (SD) , Support (Steam Deck), VRR (Ally), landscape (Ally), battery life (??? Steam Deck OLED?), color gamut (Steam Deck OLED?), Storage (draw) . SD Card (Steam Deck wins, this is my Ally deal breaker), Audio (Steam Deck OLED > Ally, Steam Deck), community (Steam Deck)
There things I like about GPD Win 4 or mini that none of these have, but they deal break cooling, ergo and risk.
I don't think you'd call me crazy for this reasoning, just like I'm not calling you crazy for the Go doing it for you.

Lets assume this year AMD releases say 6 zen 5c cores + 6700xt performance in a 3-7W apu, and total system power is MAX 15W when docked, and the APU has good idle/ sleep low consumption. What would be the ideal form? Clamshell with controllers at the top? candybar? or slide or something else

The screen IS the main reason why I will buy it! My aging eyes cannot deal with just a 7 inch screen. I need to watch Netflix/Hulu/movies, Kindle book reading, Google play PC/Bluestacks, web surfing and anything I would do on a tablet. Gaming is only 50% of what I would use it for. I could care less about the fan sound because I’m 57 and don’t have the 20 something ears. The FPS mode looks amazing!! I can’t wait to buy it hopefully by January

One thing I think a lot of people get wrong about the Steam Deck (and by extension the Steam Controller) and its trackpads is that people seem to think that the trackpad is intended to be used just by itself for mouse/joystick emulation. Valve very intentionally included a gyro sensor and a ridiculously deep configurator so you could combine the two. Try-hards will say "flick-stick or death" with gyro always on, but I like to be more relaxed when I'm gaming, so I just have gyro set to activate when I touch the trackpad. It's the best of both worlds, like Lord Gaben himself took a standard twin-stick controller, a keyboard, and a mouse, fused them together, and made the Steam Controller.
The software is where it's at, and the community layouts are usually pretty solid (with some tweaking to fit personal preference.) All I'm gonna say, Valve *really* should have included some tutorials for configuration that give examples of how to use it instead of relying on the community to act like Jehova's Witnesses. The irony is not lost on me that I am doing it right now because Valve still hasn't done that very simple act of educating their users on their products. 😂 It's been over a decade since the Steam Controller launched with the controller configurator API, and it's still all community based for the most part. Dualsense, Dualshock 3-4, and Switch controller users all would also benefit from such educational materials, as you can set buttons to be gyro activation.
There's layers and layers more, but I'll leave the rest of that for RUclips videos that already exist (a few of which I made myself, way back when the Steam Controller was still fairly new.)

Bob does such fantastic impression/review videos! I highly enjoyed this overview of the Legion! My question for everyone is…If you don’t have a handheld device like this yet, which one are you thinking of getting of the 3, especially now that the OLED Steam Deck is here?

    • @bipbop3121
      @bipbop3121 7 месяцев назад

OLED Steam Deck tops my list. They addressed most things and still have the controls, software, support, marketshare, value crowns.
GPD Win 4 or mini really interest me, but I'm not currently in a position to gamble with dealing with their China support and cooling is also a huge priority for the environment I live in. Them being smaller really appeals to me, but in spite of my smaller hands, they're not as ergonomic, according to reviews.
I have small hands and want to use Legion Go in ways reviewers say it's too heavy for. It's special feature, involves laptop table top territory and I have a 1660 Ti laptop and mouse. Weirdly, the Go would be more compelling if it included a surface like keyboard, active stylus, but not at an increased price or not too increased. I understand why the audio isn't as good on Go, but it definitely hurts my interest. Ever since I've had a phone with great speakers, I realize I use my phone speakers more than I use IEMs or my ANC overears, now. I really thought my situation meant more headphone use, but while I need it sometimes it's not a majority. I enjoy not using headphones most.
Landscape & VRR on the Ally are very tasty features. I really wish the Steam Deck had landscape & VRR. The SD card issue, is a deal breaker for me. Asus's support track record vs Valve, doesn't help either. I say this as someone who often ends up buying Asus, after research. It's not a clamshell, so a case would have been nice. Asus did Asus things and cheaped on the Wi-Fi, like usual, I think? Although, unlike their laptops, you can't just upgrade the wifi card for $20-30, I think.

Quality has been consistently solid and price vs. performance has been excellent. My stock Samsung charger started heating up when fast-charging to the point where it'd overheat and stop working, and despite it costing twice that of a stock charger, the UGreen charger and heavy-gauge USB-C cable I picked up as a replacement have been performing wonderfully and doesn't even get warm to the touch in the process.

I do agree with what you said about diminishing returns in regards to having such a high resolution screen on a handheld. Lenovo could have just went with the same resolution and refresh rate as the Steam Deck and cut the price down because I know for sure the Legion could not run most modern AAA games well above 70 FPS at low settings. Some of these companies aiming to get into the handheld gaming scene tend to focus on the wrong things when it comes to making one. We need more TDP, resolution and fan speed options through more optimized software on top of better design of the main body for better air flow. In my opinion, those should take priority when it comes to coming up with a Windows handheld.

That's why i Like the Lenovo Legion Go form factor: the tablet mode. I'd never buy a handheld pc just for gaming, but I like the idea of having a handheld to play pc games. However, with the legion go, you can use the tablet only, with a really thin keyboard and mouse to go to class or to the cafe, just like you'd use an android tablet, but this time you have windows, so you can use software like pc version of microsoft office or even cad software (if it serves for anything in a less than 15" screen). For me something like the legion go offers the convenience of tablets and windows, with just a bit of extra clumkiness - i'd rather buy this to a more expensive ipad or samsung tablet any day of the week; but then i think how much more efficient would be to just bring my laptop around anyways.... I'm still deciding whether or not to go for these devices, but the LEnovo Legion Go is the closest from what I'd like to get, handheld PC related. Thanks for the video, Wulff, seems like nobody is focusing in the tablet mode for anything other than gaming, and you at least mentioned it.

Idk, I dug up one of my older 8.9 inch tablets for comparison / getting an idea on how it'd look and I wouldn't really want to use that with a keyboard and mouse. Same thing goes for my 12.9 inch Ipad, writing with a pen on it is fine, hunching over to get closer to the small display to use desktop applications not so much. Holding these "small" displays right up to your face works just fine, putting them on a desk and moving further away however...
It's like 2 people trying to play a switch in tablet mode, neither can really see anything. You can most certainly do it, but why would you. With a case it's going to be about as clunky as a laptop, just in a different dimensions.

2 reasons I bought my Steam Deck. I needed an additional computer I can bring with me and will be ready to use in the back of my truck (semi truck driver) so first I wanted to support the company that kicked this up which you could argue was Nintendo but Valve is the company that really kicked the first field goal. For a handheld, I think the best experience you can get is at 720p. I already thought 1080p was pushing it. By leaving a device at 720p, you can have a longer battery life and better performance in general because the graphics aren’t pushing extra pixels. When plugged in, sure, update the experience to 1080p, heck even 1440p if the handheld can handle it. But ultimately, there’s no need for more than 1080p.

ARM isn't all that. It's slightly better overall on efficiency.
The big difference is the little big design. X86 is getting there on that.
You can make an ARM handheld of course and put games through one or two levels of translation but it's not give give the benefits you're after. The switch works because people are targeting ARM for their software. No one's gonna do that for PC

I definitely agree with diminishing returns on resolution. While 720p of the switch and 800p of the steam deck is definitely noticeable even for the size, I think the 1080p of the ally is the sweet spot. 720 will definitely be better if you're aiming for performance since it's not that much worse than 1080 on handhelds, but there's definitely that point past 1080 where it starts to not really matter for most people. The one and only exception would be something like the pimax portal which is trying to do VR so the 4k resolution on the handheld is kinda necessary with it being so close to your face.

And now it's happening. Not only are there more options and reducing price with competition, but it also makes game devs consider optimization for these systems.

I am also a work from home parent and don't have a lot of interest in sitting at my work space to play PC games at night.
The legion go gives me so much flexibility. It's almost as powerful as my 3060 laptop in all honesty. I can get more fps because I can run games at 800p and they look as good or better on the small screen as 1440p. The Steam deck was amazing but struggled with so many newer games like Starfield. A lot of the features speak to me. The non vrr display kinda stinks but my Deck doesn't do that either and I have been great with it running at 40hz. This screen should support 48fps really well since that is 1/3 ratio for 144hz and the extra horse power will absolutely take you there. Sub 60 fps on handhelds is less noticeable in general in my opinion because the travel of objects between frames is much harder to perceive, so I honestly think at 48 fps this thing will sing.
