One of the main reasons that Jackie Brown is one of the only films in his work that’s quite different from the rest is because the script is based off the book “Rum Punch” by Elmore Leonard. It’s the only film by Tarantino that’s an adaptation.
But he added his flavor. In the book she's white and her name is Jackie Burke

This will almost be Tarantino's most mature, but most overlooked movie.
Tarantino adapted the screenplay from a novel by Elmore Leonard.
When Sam J says to DeNiro, "Your ass used to be beautiful," he is giving us the key to Louis's character. He's not just some dumb, inert stoner but a burned out ex-con. Like all the other characters, he has his own priorities and drives but he's been through a lot (of drugs, for one thing); is not the man he used to be. His absent-mindedness is not to be confused with outright stupidity. If you watch DeNiro's performance closely, he's never just sitting there. The wheels are turning in his mind as much as Jackie's. Ordell, who knew him in his criminal prime, is sad (or as sad as a psychopath can be) to have to "retire" him.
Yeah, their subtitles completely fucked that line up.
The characters of Ordell, Louis, and Melanie first appeared in a previous Elmore Leonard novel, The Switch.
I love this movie 🩷 I was disappointed too that Max didn’t ride off with Jackie when it was so obvious he was in love with her. It would have been a perfect ending but then the triumph mixed with melancholy was nice too lol.
No matter how many times I've seen this, I wish that Max would go with Jackie. 💔💔💔
I imagine that when he does eventually close his business, he’d go and find her in Spain.
That's Tarantino as the "automated" voice on Jackie's answering machine.
Everyone i knew was disappointed when this first came out because it wasn't another Pulp Fiction. I think it has become more appreciated over the years. A lot of people now say it's their favorite of his movies.

I hope you try Elmore Leonard's other book-to-movie, Soderbergh's Out of Sight. It has Keaton playing the same ATF agent (Elmore's shared universe, lol); a flick that really put Soderbergh on the map and made critics and audiences sit up. It's a great watch, I hope you try it, even if on yer own time, it's def one to sit back to and enjoy.
@chefskiss6179 Speaking of Elmore Leonard's book-to-movies there is also Barry Sonnenfeld's brilliant comedy "Get Shorty" with Gene Hackman, John Travolta, Renée Russo, James Gandolfini, Dennis Farina and even a cameo by Harvey Keitel.
I was going to say definitely "Get Shorty", that is the best Tarantino-esque movie that came in "Pulp Fiction"'s wake (there were a million), the Elmore Leonard script being a big help. And with Jackie Brown, it makes it even more fitting. Totally agree. "Get Shorty" is sort of the film people were expecting "Jackie Brown" to be in a way! lol "Out Of Sight" is also good.
Out of Sight is awesome and Jennifer Lopez ONLY good movie;)

When Robert De Niro first got ahold of the script, he wanted to play the role of Max Cherry. Quentin Tarantino wanted to work with De Niro, but had his heart set on Robert Forster as Cherry, so he gave the role of Louis to De Niro.
He was probably just trying to get that Pam Grier kiss because same 😂...
Hey, I love your reactions and wanted to offer a clarification. You said Tarantino's official 9 plus Death Proof but Death Proof is part of the official 9. The confusion in the numbering comes from the two volumes of Kill Bill being considered one film, so it's:
1. Reservoir Dogs
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Jackie Brown
4. Kill Bill vols. 1&2
5. Death Proof
6. Inglourious Basterds
7. Django Unchained
8. The Hateful Eight
9. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood
Death Proof is absolutely part of the 9. It's the next movie after Kill Bill, before Inglorious Basterds. Kill Bill is one film that was divided into two during the editing process so that Tarantino wouldn't have cut things like the anime sequence, and that happened only very shortly before it was released. They were released mere months apart. We were all waiting for Kill Bill for three or four years, not Kill Bill Volume One! Death Proof is absolutely part of the 9, and Tarantino has said it himself. "It's part of my 9"
Adding one more thing to that though: what would be COOLEST....is if you do watch the other Grindhouse movie in tandem, "Planet Terror" just because there is a female cast member who is in both and the characters could not be more different. The two movies were seen together (in an edited down form) along with fake trailers that you can see on "Planet Terror".
I live about 15 minutes away from the mall where this was filmed! But it's completely remodeled and unrecognizable now.. You wouldn't even be able to recognize it as the same mall from the movie lol

No, the subtitles were just off. He was saying Louis "used to be beautiful" referring to how efficient a criminal he had been in the past.
Love De Niro's understated performance. Originally he wanted to play Max Cherry, but Tarantino had already cast Forrester (even though he did consider swapping the roles!) This film revitalized Robert Forrester's career and he's great in it. Still.......can you imagine De Niro as Max Cherry? That's how you know De Niro's a great actor; even though I love Forrester's performance, you can't help wondering how De Niro would have played it, especially the stuff with Pam Grier. De Niro is BRILLIANT playing guys who are hooked on a woman (Casino, Raging Bull, Falling In Love, Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, etc etc)
By far my favorite Tarantino. Takes place in my neck of the woods ~ I've even shopped at the Del Amo Mall. And my ex husband's middle name was "Lou-issssss" so that was kind of fun. I like this on in the background while I clean house.
One of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Adore this film. And the subtitle about ass being beautiful is wrong - he said "your ass used to be beautiful" to Robert DeNiro. Genius have him play such an aloof role, against type, where he doesn't have to carry anything.

This and Pulp Fiction are my favorite Tarantino films. Of course he's never done a bad or even shallow film ever.
I think Max was a bit scared of going with her because she was very good at fooling people when necessary. Love it.

The BEST Tarantino? That's an interesting debate. And I might have a different answer than I do to the question of MY FAVORITE Tarantino. Which is definitely Jackie Brown.
It was Pulp Fiction for A LOT of years! But as time went on, and I like JB a little more quite literally every single time I re-watched, eventually I had to admit... Jackie Brown is actually my favorite.

He doesn't get enough praise?!, what world do you live in?. People never stop talking about him, he's one of the most celebrated, beloved, high profile directors of all time, when his films come out its a world event, no other director has his influence or cinematic pull.

Adaptation of Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard almost word for word. Get Shorty is another great Elmore Leonard adaptation. Actors love to be in Elmore Leonard movies because all the character development is through the dialogue and they have great lines
Elmore Leonard also penned 310 to Yuma and Joe Kid. Get Shorty is a lot of fun with John Travolta, Gene Hackman, and Danny DeVito. Another book is Out of Sight )the George Clooney J Lo movie). Start with Get Shorty
Another terrific reaction, guys! Jackie Brown is my favorite QT film by far, followed by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. What I love about JB is that it has QT’s style, but the focus is not on the usual violence or his use of style for style’s sake, but on the story and characters. The tight plotting is a welcome change from the freewheeling stories he usually tells. Very much a modern version of a film noir. The casting in all Tarantino films is excellent, but the casting of Pam Grier and Robert Forster here was truly inspired. They both brought echoes of their former successes while being a bit down and out and sadly a bit forgotten in their current careers, which matched the characters to a t. Both careers received major renewed interest after this film came out. The soundtrack is also one of the best of any Tarantino film. It’s a film that rewards multiple watches due to its richness.

@@christopherking4932 I agree with you and disagree with OP. I don't think any of his movies focus on violence except for Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Death Proof. It's weird when people talk about Tarantino as if he directed gore or torture porn movies like Hostel or Saw or something like that. Most of the runtime in his movies are just people talking to each other. If anything, his main focus is always on dialogue, story and character development. I also don't think he uses style just for style's sake except in those two movies I mentioned earlier, although I think the overstylization in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 complements the fantastical story very well and the almost lack of action scenes in Vol. 2 more than makes up for it. In every other movie of his, style and story go hand in hand. I absolutely agree that it is in fact a disregard for Tarantino to say that Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds and The Hateful Eight, to name a few, are not focused on the story and characters. They could be novels. A lot of people in the industry regard Pulp Fiction's script as one of the best ever written and they say it even stands as a good read on its own.

This is the movie that made me pick up my first Elmore Leonard novel.
This is my favorite Tarantino movie. I think it is because it's adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel. Another Elmore Leonard novel adapted into a pretty good movie is Out Of Sight with George Clooney
Pam Grier is also a pretty regular character in Michael Mann's Crime Story that ran alongside Miami Vice and Wiseguy with Ken Wahl. Used to hear......Tonight on Crime Story, Ray Luca leads Torello on chase through Chicago. Andrew Dice Clay and Ted Levine were in it too. Still one of my favorite shows. Also, City Homicide which is one of the best shows I've ever seen.
De Niro's character is kind of "shell shocked" from being imprisoned. When you spend time in jail, your choices are limited and so when you get out and you now have the freedom to do as you wish, your mind has a hard time adjusting again. It affects everyone differently but I once say an interview where a guy said he hid out in his hotel for two days because it was such a shock to see different life had became on the outside

Your reaction just to the opening credits, and seeing the cast list...and especially when De Niro's name comes up.....that was the greatest. That's how I felt when I first learned De Niro was going to be in the next Tarantino film, I couldn't WAIT for this movie to come out. Had seen Reservoir Dogs the week it opened, and Pulp Fiction the day it opened, then saw it two more times in the theatre. VERY anticipated movie, Jackie Brown was. Living in NYC, there were posters all over the city of each one of the characters in the weeks leading up to the release. At first everyone - including me - was like "Damn good movie! But not Pulp Fiction." and there was a slight sense of comedown. But when the DVD came out six months later, or whatever it was, people found themselves rewatching it over and over again. I definitely did, and it's been my personal favorite ever since. THANKS!
The subtitle "her ass used to be beautiful" is incorrect. The line is "your ass used to be beautiful". Meaning that Deniro's character used to be very talented at crime, but he clearly isnt what he used to be, missing something so massively suspicious as seeing Max Cherry at the exact site of a $550,000 cash drop.

Also, please let Mom know that the Federal Firearms Protection Act of 1986 does ban the purchase or sale of any fully automatic weapon or "machine gun". 5:12 It meant that older automatic weapons from before 1986 could be kept, but could not be sold or change hands without the transfer being reported and registered with the ATF, and anyone who wanted to purchase any automatic weapon...old or new...had to get a very thorough background check from the Federal Government. That is why the Terminator was able to purchase an Uzi...it was because that movie was made before the purchase of automatic weapons had to go through the ATF. Lots of folks think it is easy to purchase machine guns in the USA, but it has actually been incredibly hard to get them since 1986.👍

The movie on the tv was Dirty Mary and Crazy larry starring Peter Fonda. Tarantino loves his 70s genre flicks.

Michael Keaton completely redefined what comedy and acting was for me in Much Ado ABout Nothing (a reasonably approachable Shakespeare comedy).
So glad you're gonna do True Romance later, don't forget to watch Killing Zoe too, nobody remembers that one or reacts to it. He was only executive producer but its awesome.

If you get two subtitle options, English or English [CC], choose ‘English’. The CC (closed captions) will spoil things like the gun shot because CC writes out sounds and not just dialogue.

When it comes to Tarantino his stuff is mostly over the top violence with quirky characters with Jackie brown the characters are complex realistic and overall it’s an great story with the heart being Jackie and maxs relationship even though it didn’t work out they both left with broken hearts sadly knowing that they are meant to be but it won’t work due to their different lifestyles

"Four Rooms" (1995) is an anthology of 4 shorts by 4 directors set in the same hotel. Robert Rodriguez directed the 3rd short, and Quentin Tarantino directed the 4th.
And the 4th is the best. Shocking, hilarious and just the perfect way to end it.
Tarantino never does nudity in his films. He says violence is his forte. hehe.
This is the only Tarantino movie that isn't about other movies.
