Just a piece of advice for anybody living in their car. If you ever get questioned by law enforcement you tell them that you're on a camping trip which technically is not lying because you are permanently camping in your car but you never admit to the fact that you are living in your car. A lot of states and areas have made living in your car illegal now. You need to have a resident address which is hard to do if you don't have a resident. For this I would suggest either getting mail at a friend's a relative's house or if that is not an option pay the extra money to get a personal mailbox which is different than a PO box. Personal mailboxes can receive mail that PO boxes can't. Get it before you hit the road or have a friend's address that you can use as a backup for a personal mailbox. Also it might be a good idea to get a storage unit even if it's just a closet one for extra supplies you need to store close to where you will be based out of. The other thing about having a closet storage unit is you can use it in an emergency situation with the door closed and you inside to take a bird bath when gyms are closed. I was in my car for four and a half years and would just go into my storage unit pull the door down from the inside and take a quick bird bath using two buckets of water that were the size of ice buckets for motel 6. It only took 5 minutes to get clean and I had the privacy I needed in my storage unit. I was also able to keep extra supplies I needed and put my dirty clothes and a hamper in the storage unit and kept my clean clothes in there as well. I was also able to keep extra supplies of non-perishable food in a tote in my storage unit. Just an idea.

If you’re doing it in Los Angeles there’s nothing to worry about with police. You’re not doing anything illegal in Los Angeles and some people may try to call police on you. I sleep in my jeep since 2017 and it’s happened to me and I waited until they got there and talked to them. They told me you can be parked in a residential area for 3 days without moving if you want to.

Hello. Just adding my 2 cents. I have lived in my car several times in the past 5 years. About to move into my car again today. Just a tip for car toileting. I use vinegar to rinse out urine containers after each use and leave the lid off to let it air dry, helps keeps smells down. Also, as far as #2 you can use a garbage bag. Just squat like you would using the bathroom in the woods. Tie up the bag and drop it in the trash when you fill up on gas. As far as bathing, I keep a small wash basin, shower gel and rags. Use a tea kettle that plugs into the cigarette lighter to heat water. Wet rags hang to dry before putting in laundry bag.

I lived in my 2015 Altima for 2 years. First big things I bought when I had the funds were my power station, solar panel, cheap roof rack, and a water pitcher with filter(I'd fill up when staying at a camp ground at the edge of town or fountains at parks and whatnot.) Just knowing I had water and power made it really start to feel like home.

    • @itsTheKevL
      @itsTheKevL Год назад +8

@@Jou204 I'm in Cali and the water where I usually fill is somewhat chalky and metallic in flavor from the aqueducts and local pipes, so for my tastes the Pur water filter pitcher has been great. It's around $15-20 for a 3 pack of filters that'll last around 3 months each. Depending where you're at in the country, you can find out what are the common contaminants and then buy a filter that fits those needs. Gravity fed filters work best as they simulate how natural water filters through the earth on a smaller scale. Those water bottle ones try to mimic it but don't work as well because they rush the water through.

Just a gardener's note: _very_ fresh pee that is light in color can be good for plants - safer to spread it out a bit so as to minimize the risk of nitrogen burn. Pee that has sat a while turns into ammonia and can burn or even kill plants. There are a few gardeners who use their own fresh urine in their gardens - so that is an option for getting rid of it.
The longer it sits, the more it smells because of it turning into ammonia.

That might seem like a good idea if you have an actual roof over your head, but unless someone living in a vehicle does the world a gardening service by spreading their urine along the roadside wildflowers, how realistic is it to have live plants to care for in a small confined space such as that of a vehicle. It not very likely that car-camping folk would have plants.

Get wipes, a tub with a lid, to do your no2. Put a plastic bag in the tub, line it with a nappy in the tub and do your business. Dispose as you would general waste in a bin. You need a emergency no2 toilet. Best to have something then not. I part-time car camp and don't just rely on public toilets. As a woman you sometimes need a bucket to sort yourself out in a emergency and for safety at night. I like your wee system it is smart. Good on Mum for getting a Jackery because they are not cheap. Wish my beautiful mum was still alive. I am slowly adapting to life without her and got into part-time car camping around work and life. I love it, but do have a base. You definitely need a Solar panel next, it is a must, but get a compatible one, cheaper and works just fine without the price tag Jackery charge. I did and works fine plus waterproof, unlike the Jackery version solar panel which is not. Solo female part-time camper. It is good to see more of our culture doing this out of choice. I have been taking long road trips for years now and since I have gotten older, my health isn't that great, so I have to stop more frequently. So this past summer I decided to stop at campgrounds in between each state, (I visited six on this journey and traveled through nine) and found it was a lifesaver. The most I paid was $70 because I wanted to camp out in their covered wagon and I loved it. I could have just camped on the ground for only $10 with access to the bathroom and shower. The next campground only cost $35 with a bathroom and shower. It was a fun campground with lots of activities like fishing, canoeing, and hiking. But I also like your idea of having a gym membership and will probably purchase one because the downside of the campground is finding one on your route that is reasonable in pricing.

First mistake of living in a car, people always piss in a bottle, which is fine, but they never know how to dispose of it properly. I've seen people dump it every morning when they leave their parking spot, right on asphalt to get heated up by the sun. It's disgusting, especially when there's foot traffic and restaurants in that area. Complete disregard for everyone else's health. I've been guilty of it myself starting out. The Best way I found to dispose of it, is Find a Port a potty in your area, there's always one in a city somewhere. That's the best spot to dump your urine. If you can't find one, then make sure the container you piss in has a tight lid that screws on, like a Gatorade bottle, because you'll have to just throw the whole bottle away. They need to make more public showers and bathrooms in cities for travelers and more important, the people that need those resources. It's tough living in a car. But it's necessary for some. Good luck to you girl.

F*ck no don't do that either you contaminate the ground, you can get a ticket for that, and that's disgusting it still smells and is unsanitary to the public to have your urine on public grounds. Just throw the Gatorade bottle of piss away or dump pee in a porta potty, that's always better than dumping urine out anywhere

For ppl living in a car, u can always get a paint bucket or old green pickle bucket and line it with a trash bag So u can poop and pee in the back seat of ur car. U just pull the seats all the way up and do ur business. Upon completion u just take the bag out and tie it up and dispose of it. Just be sure to have ur wipes and Clorox to disinfect and put the bucket in the truck until next time. It's comfortable .

I started boon-docking to save on hotels when I go to the beach since its a good distance from where I live and have freedom from reservation schedules, and I really like it for that! As I stayed into the 4th overnight straight in a row one trip, I saw how power supply was important, being able to warm food up and keep it cold was a challenge too. Though, I dont believe any of these things would make me want to be in a hotel instead😀. I like not dragging, umpacking/packing my stuff into and out of a hotel, by a certain time. Since Im beaching, I have the lake and some beaches have showers. But if no swimming, not sure if id do a truck stop. That is a concern. A campground, but back to reservations depending on when and where. And costs. I like dilute vinegar (1 part water 1 part vinegar, or add more water, whatever you like) in a bottle or spay bottle or on a washcloth then wipe down the whole body, and then a wipe a clean water washcloth over body but dont have to rinse vinegar off. Feels smooth like a shower. Its good for underarms and the lower pH is good for the private parts(it may sting a bit😀). Baby wipes are popular but I feel they leave a residue. I will use them on my feet though before bed. Best to you.❤

A very simple toilet I keep in our car is a 3-1/2 gallon bucket fitted with a screw-in lid. The screw-in lid is leakproof and airtight so there's no smell. Inside is a very simple urine-diverter ----- an empty detergent wide-mouth jar pushed up against the front inside wall of the bucket . An ordinary plastic bag for the solids goes inside the bucket behind the wide-mouth jar. To make a comfortable seat just buy a pool noodle at the dollar store and cut into lengths that will fit each side of the bucket rim; then cut each of the 2 pieces of pool noodle along one side lengthwise so it can fit over the rim of the bucket. Simple & easy clean-up: the jar can just be poured out in the bushes somewhere, and the plastic bag can be tied off and dumped with the other trash.

But each car is different, naturally. We have a Sienna mini van and took out the back seats.

This goes on the rim for a comfier sit. Use only for peeing but could be # 2 in an emergency. Then I think I'd just toss it. I clean mine out really well and then air dry thoroughly. Great suggestions. I am a 66 year old woman in the car life trying to save up enough money to buy a decent running van to convert or a small shuttle. You are a very courageous and remarkable young woman. I suggest that for going number two, you get a small bucket with the lid like a luggable loo put a trash bag liner in it go to tractor supply and get pellets for like animal bedding like horse bedding they're very absorbent they cut down odor you put that in the bucket you know when you use it. You can dump it every day just like you would a baby's disposable diaper tie that puffy up and just throw it in a trash can at a park at a gas station wherever. Where I live it is also very very cold and damp and I do travel around a little bit but because I have children and grandchildren I predominantly stay in a in close proximity to them. I am getting a zero degree sleeping bag for the winter. It is absolutely necessary where I live right now it is July 5th and our high is 62° and it's currently raining as it has been for the last 3 days

I have chosen to live in my 2002 Acura tl, since I was in a very unfavorable living situation. I finally had enough, so I left. That was yesterday, I’m 19, I have a job and I already had plans to move into my own place with my boyfriend. So I should only have to stay in my car for a few months, if it’s longer than oh well. I can already tell that not only am I taking better care of myself, (I’ve always hated brushing my teeth, until now for some reason) but I also feel happier that I’m not having to live under someone’s rules. (Some background on why I’m not living with my boyfriend rn: he’s living with his dad, he’s 21, and his dad is against me even going into my boyfriends room EVEN IF my boyfriend is not in his room. So I obviously can’t live with him. His dad does like me but ig he’s just really weird) but anyways. To get myself prepared I went to Walmart and got 2 big storage bins for my clothes and one for clothes and other possessions that I hold dear. (I.E. photo albums, religious items etc.) and then I got a 4 pack of small storage bins for food, medicine and a quick place to find my underwear, bras and socks. I also stocked up on water, imperishable foods, and basic hygienic stuff. I have a planet fitness black card membership so if I ever need a bathroom to shower I can go there, and I can also go to sheetz to relieve myself if the gym is closed. Thankfully I can in fact do my laundry at my boyfriends, so that won’t be a hurdle I need to work through. I am lucky enough to be able to leave my leopard gecko and my cat under my boyfriends watch, while I do take care of them myself, at least ik they’ll always be safe. My uncle has property that has fields and is a little ways away from the highway and I have his permission to be in his property at any time, so I’ll always have a safe spot to sleep. I am very blessed for this to be a self made decision and not a circumstance that has befallen me. I should be starting school in august, I am trying to become and LPN, I am currently a CNA, so it’ll be a big step up for me if I can achieve this. Me and my boyfriend will be saving as much money as we can so we can get a place together. I love him so much and I thankful that he’s sticking around through this whole situation, and is being really supportive. We’ve been together 2 years (our anniversary is June 1st, 2021) and I believe he loves me very much to be doing all of this for me and to actually be so supportive to me. Ik he plans on getting engaged soon, so I hope everything works out! I’ll give you guys updated on what’s what, and if someone actually made it this far into my comment, just know everything will be okay! Keep moving, don’t stay in one area for too long, and don’t be discouraged. Everything happens for a reason! I hope you have safe travels my friend! 💕

Hey I’ve been thinking about doing this I have a Chevy spark I’m planning on taking out the front and back seats for room. I’m planning on building my bed out of dollar store Jenga blocks. (I know it sounds crazy but they are light weight and durable and I built a stool with them and with only wood glue and a little metal it holds 160 pounds.) I’m also looking into mini camping stoves for the heat and cooking. I was planning on using either wood I find or the dollars store jenga blocks as a backup fuel source. I’d love to share some ideas and connect. If you know a little electrical you can use a potato for a light bulb for about 8 hours and then cook it. 😁 1950 science fair project!!!!

I paid $4,000. for my old mini-motorhome, but it has a stand-up bathroom with a shower. It's tight in there and I don't use the showerhead, but I love dipping and pouring warm water over my head just like everyone does in Asia. Those "solar generator" battery paks are great- I recommend getting at least a 400-watt one. Mine is 1200-watt and can run almost anything.

New-found freedom can be fearsome- ask any caged bird who sees that the cage door is open. You'll enjoy the freedom of the road. Make it an adventure. I do, for sure.

Horse pellets bought at a feedstore absorbent and if pine scented. No smell. They do expand. Farmers use them in horse stalls to absorb urine and not stink.

I have a few low wide jars from Calm magnesium powder for pee, so I don't have to open a used one. I don't like to venture out of the car at night at rest or truck stops, and I'm old, so two times at night is normal and I'm afraid of spilling, so single use vessels are better for my sanity. Small enough to bring into a bathroom in the morning to dump and rinse. Rinse with a little mouthwash. I have a sturdy plastic coffee can double lined with scented wastebasket plastic bags for poop. Aldi bathroom wipes to clean up. Then throw in the trash.

You can buy little packets that gels the pee to put in your lined can or bucket, which I believe also handles the odor. If you have to use the in-car solution every night, that might get pricey over time, but for the occasional need, that's what I opt for.
At my local Walmart they sell 2 gallon buckets with snap on lids for $2 at the bakery. I was thinking of carrying one of those, lining it with a bag, pour some pee/poo powder in ahead of time just in case, and not worry about a funnel. (If I can't hit that, I got no business doing my business in a car. 🤣) You just close it at the top with a twist tie when done, snap on the lid, tuck away, and then dispose the bag in the morning, which will be solid gel. A large coffee can would work, too. Hey, this one lady shared she puts a puppy pad under her pee container in case... pretty smart!
I also ordered a collapsable potty and a pop up privacy tent. Good to have when you can afford it or have room to carry more items. You put a bag in it, snap the seat on, and pour some poo powder in the bag before engaging. Zip tie the bag when you're done and toss in the nearest dumpster. The gel takes care of the liquid waste and odors, or you can throw cedar pet bedding flakes on top, but that's extra stuff to carry.
So many solutions. Just do what works best for you!

I have done some minor car life and about to get back into it again. You got some helpful advice. I got a older car so I will have to later look for things that are capable with old car rather then a new one. It's going to help me save more in order to get the money I need for the country I plan to live my dreams at. It like if I don't get it done I won't be happy with the life I have. I got steps I need to tske to have me standing of my feet financially there as well when it comes to employment. A man isn't a solution for me. I love my single life so much. If you know of a place where you can buy a small cooker or grill to go inside a 2005 Malibu then let me know until i get to where I plan to libe happy and for good being that im the single woman that i am. Thank you kindly 🙏

I highly recommend the small 12V chest refrigerators. They keep things cold using only 40 watts. Turn the temp down and you've got a freezer. I use mine as a freezer, make ice cubes, and add the cubes to my cheap icebox to make a refrigerator. No need to buy 2 appliances.
