    When I bought an Everglide SK108 I was blown away by how good the stabilizers are stock. I still haven't modded them, and they are absolutely fine.

    You are right
    Plate mount stabs can be as good as pcb stabs
    I've tuned my everglide v3 plate mount stabs without any rattle on my keychron k8
    When I compared it to the durock v2 on my ikki aurora, they turned out to be equally good

  • @allisterjones
    @allisterjones 2 года назад +6

    Definitely agree
    Maybe wasn't the case 2 years ago, but now with new and improved mods for plate mounted stabs as well as durock/everglide plate mounted stabs. the difference is really negligible if you put in the extra effort to make it a tight fit in the stab cut out.

    The best part about plate mount stabs is the serviceability, you can just remove them, holee mod, and reinstall without touching anything else in the keeb. Screw in-stabs are complete garbage in this regard.

    I love plate mount stabs. You can take them out by just removing the keycap and switch. Makes for hassle-free modding. I don't have to take apart an entire board. Been loving my NK65 Awaken Edition. After trying countless boards sometimes it's just the basics that do it right.

    Thanks to you and this video, I managed to fix all annoying noises from the plate mount stabilizers in my Pulsar PCMK (which are factory lubed but a bit wobbly), after having watched the videos from :3ildcat that you link to! The result is truly amazing, so I agree, there's really nothing inherently bad with plate mount stabs!

    I have more experience with plate mount stabs than with pcb mount.
    I feel like screw in stabs are much easier from the one set of pcb stabs I've done.. (some gmk screw in stabs).
    I don't think pcb mount stabs are worse than plate mounts. They probably have less rattle because it's more hard mounted. However well mounted plate stabs that are of good quality can sound and feel good as pcb stabs if not better depending on the comparison.
    It just might take more effort to make a subpar plate mount stab perform at the same level of a subpar pcb mount stab.
    I'm not sure if there even is a bad/ subpar pcb mount stabilizer set because of my limited experience.

    • @toufusoup

      I never really got the whole “worse than” unless if the stigma came from the early days of the hobby where people only knew how to either bandaid mod/lube or something.

    I had some unfortunate experience with plate mount stab with my recent tm680 build where the upstroke was infuriating. But thanks to your videos, I might give them some more tweaks. Also, I prefer screw-ins since I feel they are more secure and the chance of wires popping out is extremely low.

    • @toufusoup
      @toufusoup  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, sometimes there are some stabilizers that are just either duds or beyond fixing, but honestly, that goes for any other type of stabilizer. My Durock v2 stabilizer that I bought last year, it came with a bent wire, the housing tolerances were off, the wire also bounced within the clip-in location, etc.

    i think screw in stabs are better, but plate mounts are good if you make them good aswell. The caveat with screw ins is that you have to take apart the keyboard to get at them.

    I have a prebuilt keyboard. Modding them gets very difficult because the stabs is actually very different from any stabs I've seen online. Idk if you have ever seen all five stabilizers for sticks together. You literally needs to desolder so much switches before even having the chance to mod your stabilizers

    • @toufusoup
      @toufusoup  2 года назад

      I've come to accept that as part of the process after all this time if you don't have a hotswap board (although hotswap boards can help you save time, obviously). But a lot of the time like say some kits that come with plate mount, people immediately toss 'em without modding or whatnot, and for whatever reason it seems like it seems like something to overly celebrate when the plate mount is good.

    i also got a rk84, did your masking tape holee mod, the spacebar sounded really good! but the others were trash. i even doubled the holee mod and purposely overlubed it and the ticking didnt stop. my plate and pcb was taped too, also clipped the legs. i think its the stem of the stabilizer rattling on the housing, its like not tight? the housings didnt rattle only the stem. any tips? as much as possible i dont wanna spend more.

    Again, another video you made talking about something that I needed to hear. But I have had one problem with actually going back and trying to mod stabs again that have had failed attempts, and that problem is that nothing will stick to it or surfaces the stabilizer housing has touched because of dielectric grease. Do you have any ideas on how to remedy this? like, I cant tape the plate to have the stabs more secure because dielectric grease has gotten on the spots so tape wont stick. I cant holee mod those stabs, again, because nothing sticks to the inside... Am I just being dumb?

    • @toufusoup
      @toufusoup  2 года назад +1

      No, you're not being dumb, but you have put yourself in a predicament since there was grease there prior.
      It does take a bit of time, but what you do in these situations is get a toothbrush or some thin brush that's able to reach into the stabilizers, and give 'em a soapy scrub (maybe ultrasound?) and dry 'em out.

    • @justanotherpxrson
      @justanotherpxrson 2 года назад

      @@toufusoup hm, i will have to find a tiny brush then. or invest in an ultrasonic cleaner or something. at this point i might have to buy some new stabs though, idk yet.

    • @toufusoup

    I am going to build my first build. Do you recommend I tune the stock plate mount stabilizers as opposed to buying aftermarket screw in stabs? my intention is to tune and lube which ever stabs I use. I am wondering it is worth to pay the extra 20 dollars for screw in.

    • @toufusoup
      @toufusoup  2 года назад

      Depends on the board, because I know some keyboards don’t even allow anything but plate mount stabilizers. I personally would just stick to the stock stabilizers but if you’re worried about QC luckily for you aftermarket plate mount stabilizers are significantly cheaper than screw in. I was surprised nobody else said anything about it, so I may be in the minority here, but the plate-mounted stabilizer board sounded awful.
    Sure there was reduced rattle, but the bottom-out on the others was so mushy that I thought you were trolling when you said it sounded good. You get like halfway through the "thock" when the sound just turns into mush.

    • @toufusoup
      @toufusoup  2 года назад +2

      Uh.. are we watching the same vid? I showcased two keyboards that had plate mount and multiple stabilized keys. The first board had a brass plate and there were a variety of switches in it (Zealv2 on Spacebar, Blueberry on Enter) and the second keyboard was a literal silent keyboard, so if any stabs would somewhat “sound mushy” I guess it would be that? Regardless, I dunno which one you’re referring to. I also facelifted an AR87 that uses plate mount stabs (ruclips.net/video/OHKDTqq8kyg/видео.html), sounds fine to me
