    I have to say, your style of teaching is much more favorable than other tutorials I've watched. They jump right into making a 3d model, but you break down everything you do and explain the whys. I've tried sketchup, 3ds max, blender, and never seemed to understand 3d software. The newer version of 360 is much different than yours, but it's been a huge help to me nonetheless.

    I've taken SEVERAL Fusion 360 courses, prior to this one. I finished each one confused and not knowing how to really begin a design. This is the first course which really made sense and gave me the basics to create a design. Well Done !

    Paul, I am upside down from you! I am a 75 year old mechanical engineer who spent so much of my career as an exec that I never got hands-on with CAD. Your Fusion Lesson 1 and 2 are wonderful. They got me out of the frustration loop. I also have an Arduino project on my list (to operate the mechanisms I build from my Fusion Designs). I am going to be following you for a long time. Thank you so much!

    Thanks Paul, for this flawless presentation. I have fussed with trying to learn Fusion 360 for two years and even with Fusion's excellent tutorials was still in the dark until I found your videos. You are a master teacher and I deeply appreciate you taking the time to teach Fusion so us old guys (professional designer for over 55 years) can get in on the fun. I never dreamed I would see the day that I could design as fast as I could think and then print it out in 3D. My design life started out ink on mylar and I became a master at it. But in comparison, a complicated design that used to take me 40 hours to conceive, rough in and then ink accurately now takes 40 minutes and can be done with perfect precision. I am so excited.

      I know absolutely nothing about 3D drawing or printing. I'm starting both at the same time. Yes, I'm running the latest version of Fusion 360 (4.5) and there are things a little bit different on the menus from the videos. I just keep clicking on different options until I find the one that matches what Paul is using. Yes, a little confusing at times but I manage to get through a 30 minute video in only about an hour and a half! I'm very happy at the end of the video that what I see on his monitor is identical to what's on my monitor. Paul, you're a great teacher!

    Thank you, Paul. I've found several good videos of the basics of Fusion, but they all pale compared to yours. I guess being a math teacher was an asset. I'm a 74 yo retired electrical engineer, and like you, I started with Autocad many years ago (Acad 10 - DOS version) and quickly gave up. When I retired, I wanted to learn SketchUp, but for the simple woodworking projects I made, hand drawn sketches were lots faster. Then when I bought my 3D printer, I started using TinkerCad. However, since I wanted something a bit more robust, I decided to give Fusion a chance. So, finding your videos was a God-send as you really had the right approach to help me. Many thanks.

  • @MovesBank

    I am relatively fluent with Rhino3D and started using (paid for) Fusion 360 a month ago. I have been tearing my hair out trying to understand it's interface - communicating with various very nice and helpful Autodesk tech support folks in the process. They always refer the Autodesk tutorials, which didn't seem to answer my questions. After watching a few of your tutorials I sent an email to Autodesk suggesting they hire you to create their learning materials. Great job Paul. Keep making these videos!

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. I actually think it helps to be a little slow at this. The problem is the autodesk folks are such geniuses, they have forgoten what it is like to be a new learner. They are really great guys, but maybe so far advanced they have forgotten how to get people started.

    • @MovesBank
      @MovesBank 6 лет назад

      Even people like me who have significant experience in this realm (check out my web site - my name) might have difficulty (give up) when confronting the (currently) non-obvious interface of Fusion 360. I am glad that you are "slow". Your previous frustrations are helping many people use this powerful tool and be more creative. Also, if you don't already do so, before publishing a video, you also might want to pass a draft by few folks like me to help bring them to "absolute perfection". : )

    I'm an electrical engineer, just learning modern 3D CAD software. I totally agree with many comments - Paul, you are an excellent instructor - teaching the how and why AND when things go wrong, how to get back. ...if things aren't right, how to get them right. I've watched a lot of software how to videos. The worst ones tell you what the software can do without telling you what they're doing while they drive the software. That's useless. The thought process method of instruction is so complete - circumspect. THIS is how instruction is done!!

    Hello Paul. First let me congratulate you on your teaching style. I had to learn to program PLCs and again after successfully passing a low level micro processor course and achieved a 98% pass only to become totally confused at the next level because the instructor could not teach properly. I had to quit that class and find another. These guys knew what they were trying to teach, and sadly had been at it for some years, but they were only there for the pay check. I was advised not to join those classes but I thought the informant was biased. How right he was. You my friend are so easy to understand. Man you're a breath of fresh air. Congrats once again.
    Thank you.

    Paul, You are a lifesaver. I am coming from Acad, and Fusion 360 is foreign. The fact that you take time to show us where the clicks are and to explain what's happening shows you as a natural born teacher. The AutoDesk tutorials go too fast for a complete beginner. The fact that the equivalent of polyline is botched was a big mistake by AutoDesk. I am looking for that workaround now. Hopefully, I will find it in your lessons. I will support you when my startup takes off. ur de best! Brian

    I went through at least five other training sessions on RUclips for Fusion 360. All confused me by jumping around, not realizing that menus may be different, not taking into account moves that might seem basic but if the viewer doesn't know them, they get lost, and many more issues. Some feel they can teach when they really cant. Applaud them for trying, but until I found your 1st lesson last night, I was totally lost. Though I'm on the latest version of Fusion 360, I was able to find where the functions that you used were moved to and see the differences in the version you used compared to the one I'm using. This is the first course that is making sense. Great detail and still very relevant for learning Fusion 360 today. Thank you. Excellent instruction. Especially nice considering I've never had any luck at learning CAD/CAM design software before.

      I will admit Fusion 360 is one of the hardest things I ever tried to learn. Seriousely, over 20 years, I tried like a dozen times to learn some version of autocad or another. The thing was, the instructors were all speaking a different language. And, they assumed I already knew that language. Then, many of the tutorials, it was more like the instructor was trying to show off what he could make Fusion do, but not giving me any ability to do what he was showing. These videos of mine are a little stale at this point, and I will do a new series in the next month or so.

    Hi Paul, like you many of us have been trying to learn this program. I started tinkering with Fusion 360 about a month ago, after being pretty good with SketchUp. One tip that I learned that you may find helpful concerns getting back into the editing mode of a sketch. At about the 21 minute point in this video you were trying to get back into the sketch to edit it buy initiating the rectangle command (even though you didn't want to create a rectangle.) A simpler way to get back in the editing mode is to use the time line at the bottom left of the screen. You can see the icon on the time line for the different sketches (as well as other actions). Just right click on any sketch icon on the time line and click edit sketch and your in!
    Thanks again for your videos. They have helped me a lot. Especially the Linux videos for the RP!

I don't know why AutoDesk would not do this video but I am glad you did. Much Appreciated! Can't wait to move to the next one.

    I really don't know how anyone taking Mr. McWhorter's classes could possibly have failed. Unless they didn't speak English. Mr. McWhorter's presentation is flawless. However, I wish he would explain more about the palette and why it's different than the one I downloaded. Other than that, if an ol' timer like me can understand his presentation, anyone can. Great job.

      You need to switch over to my new Fusion 360 class on this channel. It has the new version of Fusion 360, better studio and production quality, and I know a lot more now.

    Wanting to get into CAM with today arrived little CNC and so I started again to take a look at Fusion360. Did this already 2 years ago just for modeling for my 3D-printer and made some progress but forgot almost all due to not using. Now with CAM on my list of interests I am doing a second try.
    Thanks for your very good Tuts. Very helpful. 🙂

    Hi Paul, these really are the ideal videos for learning f360. Your tempo, your style and your attention to "think first - click second" workflow works perfectly for me. I cannot thank you enough for this series. Outstanding work here sir.

    Hi Paul,
    I recently stumbled upon your lessons, and I feel extremely lucky. Best part is the unedited parts where you make mistakes such as forgetting to minimize yourself, or leaving one of the rectangle lines of wrong size. You eventually get to it, but such things teaches us that not everyone is perfect. I just started this series and I am hoping to finish watching all and learning (or die trying :)).
    Best regards!

    Fantastic lesson explanations Paul....very clear teaching..with no ambiguity....in my earlier experiments I was a bit frustrated when extruding offsets...suddenly everything disappeared...at around 17 minutes you give the answer. Very well done!

  • @SuperCozMick
    @SuperCozMick 6 лет назад

    Just a tip Paul, you should make thickness of the walls to be multiples of your extrusion width. In slic3r, this is normally 0.45mm for 0.2mm layers with a 0.4mm nozzle. Wall thickness of 1.8mm would print nicely with 2 perimeters. Or not.. The choice is entirely yours :) Great video series.

    Thank you Paul for a very informative and pleasurable lecture. Your teaching method is clear and concise and your are prepared to share your mistakes, which to me is the key to learning the true way to make progress as we all fall into these pitfalls and it’s important to learn how to climb out of them.That’s the reason you are so successful in getting people to stick with it, and make the lessons so exciting and achievable. Many thanks for being so open and not editing out the ruffles which so many do in their RUclips sessions.

    Great lesson. As others have said, Autodesk changed the "model" workspace to "design" workspace and in the process reworked a lot of the interface in sketching. I was impressed that the 3d printing custom export you showed let me choose the cura.exe (version 4.5.0 as I write this) slicer and the model opened up for slicing!

    Great videos! I want to add something though.
    When you want to go back into sketch mode to change the dimensions, just doubble click "Sketch1". Press "stop sketch" when finished .
    I don't know if there is a special reason why Paul does it in his way.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  6 лет назад +1

      Special reason is . . . that is the only way I know how to do it. I am not an expert, so just show a way that works, it is not always the best way.

    Not sure if it has been already mentioned, as the list of comments is quite long, but for anyone who wants to export each part separately (especially if you are not directly connected to your printer), for example if you want to print the top in one color and the body in another, or if you want to avoid long print hours for both in one go, just right-click on each body separately in your Browser menu and select Save as STL. Then you can import each stl into your own slicer of choice like Cura.

    Thanks so much for this video! I will normally study new software at lynda, but your video was much much better than the beginner lesson I found at lynda. Everything in your lesson worked quite smoothly, even though I'm using software (October 2019) that is 2 years newer. I did have to right click instead of dropping a menu for a couple actions...but I have myself a sunglasses case model, customized to my glasses size. Fusion is sooo much better than sketchup. With that improvement comes complexity...but it's all do-able.

    Another great series! Just FYI, the most recent version (installed yesterday) has different menu structure and apparently doesn't work exactly as it used to. For example, I can't get the dimensions to reappear. So I'm encouraging you to do an updated tutorial series. This one is great - I've managed to learn more in 2 lessons than in all of the other times I tried. Thanks.

    Paul wonderful tutorial. I watched this about a year ago but forgot a lot. I went back to rewatch your entire tutorials as a refresher. Here is the new problem we are all having. Fusion has changed the interface. Now I have no way of figuring out how to perform the Rectangular Pattern shown in this lesson. Can you or someone please let us know the new way to use the Rectangular Pattern. The old version the one you filmed two years ago was so easy now I can't figure this out at all. I know others must be having the same problems.
    From what I have been reading is there is actually two versions of the Rectangular pattern. One in sketch mode and the other is in SOLID mode.
    Thank you and everyone for your input.
